Abstract:Hybrid organic-inorganic materials represent a fascinating class of compounds that combine the unique properties of both organic compounds and inorganic materials. These hybrids leverage the versatility of organic molecules - such as their flexibility and functionality - alongside the robustness and stability of inorganic components through to coordination between components. This synergy leads to innovative applications across various fields, including optoelectronics, gas storage and separation, and catalysis. By tailoring the composition and structure of these materials, researchers can create multifunctional systems that exhibit enhanced performance, such as improved mechanical strength, conductivity, and thermal stability, making them pivotal in advancing technology and materials science. This review will provide an overview of two classes of hybrid materials: metal−organic frameworks and hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites, with their structures, applications and responses to external stimuli discussed. The emerging field of hybrid glasses will also be discussed as it represents a novel frontier in the design of hybrid materials, combining the nature of glasses with the functional properties of hybrid materials. This review aims to highlight not only the current advancements but to also provide an insight into potential future applications.

Abstract:The classification of inorganic-organic hybrid materials was introduced. The main examples were polyoxometallate-organic hybrid materials. The important preparation methods of inorganic-organic hybrid materials including sol-gel, hydrothermal, blending and self assembly were reviewed. The excellent performances of inorganic-organic hybrid materials, which possessed the advantages of both inorganic and organic materials were described. Their applications in fields of mechanics, electrics, optics, catalysis, biology and others were also briefly introduced. The future development and research trends of inorganic-organic hybrid materials were stated.

Abstract:The main goal of this mini-review is to provide an updated state-of-the-art of the hybrid organic-inorganic materials focusing mainly on interface phenomena involving ionic and electronic transport properties. First, we review the most relevant preparation techniques and the structural features of hybrid organic-inorganic materials prepared by solution-phase reaction of inorganic/organic precursor into organic/inorganic hosts and vapor-phase infiltration of the inorganic precursor into organic hosts and molecular layer deposition of organic precursor onto the inorganic surface. Particular emphasis is given to the advances in joint experimental and theoretical studies discussing diverse types of computational simulations for hybrid-organic materials and interfaces. We make a specific revision on the separately ionic, and electronic transport properties of these hybrid organic-inorganic materials focusing mostly on interface phenomena. Finally, we deepen into mixed ionic-electronic transport properties and provide our concluding remarks and give some perspectives about this growing field of research.

Abstract:With the rapid development of wearable electronics and the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) era, it is imperative to research and explore the basic components to meet the application scenarios. In particular, it is becoming increasingly difficult to impart suitable properties to individual materials and realize appropriate physical dimensions in order to satisfy increasing demands of multifunctionality for fundamental studies, device designs, and performance optimization. Therefore, these challenges and opportunities can be addressed by designing (optical) electronic and energy devices with unique functionality and versatility through the combined advantages of multidimensional integration or hybridization of inorganic semiconductors, especially inorganic two-dimensional semiconductor materials, with various types of organic materials with potentially novel functions and unique properties. Herein, a comprehensive review of emerging integration or hybridization of inorganic semiconductor materials with organic materials from their individual components, and assembly fabrication to their state-of-the-art electronic, optoelectronic, magnetic, and energy applications is presented. Future opportunities and challenges associated with these organic/inorganic hybrids are highlighted.

Abstract:For more than 5000 years, organic-inorganic composite materials created by men via skill and serendipity have been part of human culture and customs. The concept of "hybrid organic-inorganic" nanocomposites exploded in the second half of the 20th century with the expansion of the so-called "chimie douce" which led to many collaborations between a large set of chemists, physicists and biologists. Consequently, the scientific melting pot of these very different scientific communities created a new pluridisciplinary school of thought. Today, the tremendous effort of basic research performed in the last twenty years allows tailor-made multifunctional hybrid materials with perfect control over composition, structure and shape. Some of these hybrid materials have already entered the industrial market. Many tailor-made multiscale hybrids are increasingly impacting numerous fields of applications: optics, catalysis, energy, environment, nanomedicine, etc. In the present feature article, we emphasize several fundamental and applied aspects of the hybrid materials field: bioreplication, mesostructured thin films, Lego-like chemistry designed hybrid nanocomposites, and advanced hybrid materials for energy. Finally, a few commercial applications of hybrid materials will be presented.

Abstract:<p>Inorganic–organic hybrid molecular multiferroic and magnetoelectric materials, similar to multiferroic oxide compounds, have recently attracted increasing attention because they exhibit diverse architectures, a flexible framework, fascinating physics, and potential magnetoelectric functionalities in novel multifunctional devices such as energy transformation devices, sensors, and information storage systems. Herein, the classification of multiferroicity and magnetoelectricity is briefly outlined and then the recent advances in the multiferroicity and magnetoelectricity of inorganic–organic hybrid molecular materials, particularly magnetoelectricity and the relevant magnetoelectric mechanisms and their categories are summarized. In addition, a personal perspective and an outlook are provided.</p>

Abstract:Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising materials for polymer-nanocrystal hybrid solar cells (HSCs). The aim of this review article is to present a comprehensive and current overview of inorganic QDs and their applications in HSCs. Fundamental properties of QDs are first illustrated. And then recent studies that have been done to elucidate charge dynamics of QDs and improve hybrid device performance are summarised and discussed in detail. Finally, an outlook is presented considering current existing challenges in HSCs.

Abstract:According to the chemical bond feature of hybrid materials,the photochromic properties of organic–inorganic hybrid photochromic materials was introduced which was based on the organic photochromic materials,as well as their investigative history as multi-functional materials.Through coordinate-covalent bond interaction between organic photochromic ligand and metal ions,complex photochromic compounds can not only improve the stability and fatigue resistance of photochromic unit,but regulate other features in the whole molecular system such as electrochemical property,energy transfer and fluorescence emission.With weak interaction between organic and inorganic unit,intercalate or mesoporous photochromic hybrid materials can provide host space to improve the stability and fatigue resistance of photochromic unit and reversibly regulate the host magnetic character reversibly simultaneously.A new type of organic–inorganic hybrid photochromic material,bond with ionic bond,owns reversible photochromic ability in solid state through photoelectron transfer.

Abstract:The need to improve the expectancy and quality of life of subjects affected by disabling pathologies that require the replacement or regeneration of tissues or parts of the body has fueled the development of innovative, better-performing materials that are capable of integrating into and being tolerated by body tissues. Materials with these characteristics, i.e., bio-functionality, bio-safety, and biocompatibility, are defined as biomaterials. One of the many methods for producing such materials is the sol–gel technique. This process is mainly used for the preparation of ceramic oxides at low temperatures, through hydrolysis and polycondensation reactions of organometallic compounds within a hydroalcoholic solution. This study is based on a specific type of biomaterial: organic–inorganic hybrids. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of the sol–gel technique, as well as describe the preparation and chemical and biological characterization, uses, and future prospects of these biomaterials. In particular, the use of plant drugs as organic components of the hybrid material is the innovation of this manuscript. The biological properties of plant extracts are numerous, and for this reason, they deserve great attention from the scientific community.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have received extensive interest due to their exceptional properties. It is strongly required to assemble 2D materials in bulk quantities for macroscopic applications, but this is highly restricted by the aggregation of 2D materials. Constructing three-dimensional (3D) hybrid superlattices of alternating 2D materials and organic molecule layers provides a new path to access the exceptional properties of 2D materials in bulk quantities. In this tutorial review, the emerging concept of hybrid inorganic/organic superlattices is systematically illustrated. The abundant compositions and the various structures of inorganic and organic sublattices in hybrid superlattices are presented, followed by a summary of the chemical interactions between them. Many facile techniques have been developed for hybrid superlattices, enabling precise control of the structure. There are also various interesting mechanisms inside unique hybrid inorganic/organic superlattices that can help tune the properties, including electron transfer, quantum confinement, interlayer coupling, multiple interface effects, etc. The rich chemistry and abundant mechanisms of these hybrid superlattices can enhance the performance beyond the reach of existing materials, and provide new opportunities in various applications, including rechargeable batteries, catalysis, thermoelectrics, advanced electronics, superconductors, optoelectronics, etc.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid materials like bone, shells, and teeth can be found in nature, which are usually composed of biomacromolecules and nanoscale inorganic ingredients. Synergy of organic-inorganic components in hybrid materials render them outstanding and versatile performance. Chitosan is commonly used organic materials in bionic hybrid materials since its bioactive properties and could be controllable tailored by various means to meet complex conditions in different applications. Among these fabrication means, hybridization was favored for its convenience and efficiency. This review discusses three kinds of chitosan-based hybrid materials: hybridized with hydroxyapatite, calcium carbonate, and clay respectively, which are the representative of phosphate, carbonate, and hydrous aluminosilicates. Here, we reported the latest developments of the preparation methods, composition, structure and applications of these bioactive hybrid materials, especially in the biomedical field. Despite the great progress was made in bioactive organic-inorganic hybrid materials based on chitosan, some challenges and specific directions are still proposed for future development in this review.

Abstract:Information and energy related technologies with their huge market potential are a key for the future of our societies.For electronic and optoelectronic devices, e.g., LC(D) or LED based displays and light sources, photovoltaic cells, or sensing devices, there is always tough competition between organic and inorganic materials based systems.Organic materials, however, often show advantages over inorganic materials, such as silicon or II-VI semiconductors, due to their tremendous structural flexibility, the availability of low-cost processing schemes, and the possibility to create (semi)transparent and/or flexible devices.Moreover, a view on the young history of organic electronics shows a rapid increase in device performance and extraordinary technological achievements.One of the ongoing challenges for materials scientists in academia and industry nowadays is the development of novel high-performing and stable organic materials.

Abstract:van der Waals heterostructures, composed of vertically stacked inorganic 2D materials, represent an ideal platform to demonstrate novel device architectures and to fabricate on-demand materials. The incorporation of organic molecules within these systems holds an immense potential, since, while nature offers a finite number of 2D materials, an almost unlimited variety of molecules can be designed and synthesized with predictable functionalities. The possibilities offered by systems in which continuous molecular layers are interfaced with inorganic 2D materials to form hybrid organic/inorganic van der Waals heterostructures are emphasized. Similar to their inorganic counterpart, the hybrid structures have been exploited to put forward novel device architectures, such as antiambipolar transistors and barristors. Moreover, specific molecular groups can be employed to modify intrinsic properties and confer new capabilities to 2D materials. In particular, it is highlighted how molecular self-assembly at the surface of 2D materials can be mastered to achieve precise control over position and density of (molecular) functional groups, paving the way for a new class of hybrid functional materials whose final properties can be selected by careful molecular design.

Abstract:Abstract This review aims to capture the emergent scenario of research in the field of organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites and inorganic halide perovskites as fuelled by the continuing excitement about these materials, their unique properties and their immense application potential in photovoltaics and optoelectronics. While some spectacular successes have already been achieved in respect of these applications, several challenges have also been encountered in terms of the stability of these materials under different ambients and stimuli, and their integration with other functional materials to generate new device architectures. Towards this end, this review discusses pertinent strategies to tune and control their device-worthy properties and eliminate their shortcomings to the extent feasible. These include (a) intelligent doping in these structurally and chemically sensitive systems, (b) the role of defects and strategies to mitigate them via innovative synthetic controls, (c) molecular engineering to control the dimensionality and new phases in these materials, and (d) the emergent understanding about the structure–chemistry–property relationships, especially the photophysical properties. We also address the bearing that these issues have on the ultimate realisation of robust high-efficiency solar cells, either in stand-alone or tandem configurations, as well as on high-performance light-emitting diodes. The insights gained by first-principles density functional theory calculations to understand the experimental observations and to predict new material designs are also discussed. The review is concluded with a section on the summary and outlook, wherein the authors’ perspective on the emergent scenario is presented.
Solution-Processed Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskites: A Class of Dream Materials Beyond Photovoltaic Applications

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite is a class of direct-bandgap semiconductors that can be processed as thin films from solutions by low-temperature methods. Among various solution-processable semiconductor materials, the hybrid perovskites exhibit unique combination of low bulk-trap densities, remarkable ambipolar transport properties, good broad-band absorption characteristics and long charge carrier diffusion lengths, making them ideal for photovoltaic applications. Furthermore, as direct bandgap semiconductors with low bulk trap densities, the hybrid perovskite films possess remarkable luminescent properties. The bandgap of the hybrid perovskites can be tuned by crystal engineering, i.e . tuning the composition at molecular levels. These intriguing properties indicate that the hybrid perovskites may also find applications in light-emitting diodes and lasing. This paper reviews the unique properties and current research progresses of this class of dream material and provides our perspective of future directions.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic hybrid materials have become predominant in optoelectronics over the past decades. The rational combination of organic and inorganic components increases the diversity of composition forms and shows unique advantages in synthesis methods, mechanical properties, and optoelectronic properties. These materials reach or exceed the standards of traditional materials in applications such as solar cells, light‐emitting diodes, and photodetectors. Research on organic–inorganic hybrid materials (OIHMs) has experienced explosive growth in the past decades. The diversity of organic components allows for the introduction of various spatial scales, functional groups, and polarities, while inorganic components provide higher hardness, heat resistance, and stability, their flexible combination facilitates the formation of diverse structures. Furthermore, simple and cost‐effective synthesis methods, such as room temperature solution processes and mechanochemical techniques, enable precise control over the materials' properties at different scales, thus achieving adjustable structure–performance relationships. This review will discuss the recent research progress of OIHMs within the field of optoelectronics and related optoelectronic device applications. According to the dimension of inorganic components and the nature of organic–inorganic interface, this review divides OIHMs into four structural categories. The ongoing research has revealed diverse applications for OIHMs in the fields of solar cells, light‐emitting devices, detectors, and memristors. As an outlook, the potential of perovskite and 0D metal halide materials, which are currently the most studied, for enhancing optoelectronic performance and stability is discussed.
