Abstract:In recent time, Organic Solar Cells (OSCs) have made a great progress in pursuing high power conversion, reaching the application threshold. Researchers have advanced past basic concepts of charge carrier dynamics in organic semiconductors to create devices with an experimental power conversion efficiency of about 18%. This review highlights the progress of OSC efficiency and investigate the state-of-art of organic cells in various factors such as temperature, energy conversion efficiency, solar shedding, operation and monitoring that affect the solar panel efficiency. Literature has shown how organic solar cells are seen as the solar technology of the future where it is offering the lowest energy payback times, ecology sustainability, while its energy efficiency still dropping, and a high energy loss is observed.

Abstract:The book chapter provides a systematic study on plasmonic effects in organic solar cells (OSCs). We first introduce the concepts, significance, and recent progress of OSCs incorporating plasmonic nanostructures. On the basis of unique features of OSCs, we exploit versatile resonance mechanisms acting on the absorption enhancement of OSCs; for example, Fabry-Pérot mode, quasi-guided mode, and plasmonic mode. Next, we present rigorous theoretical models to characterize optical properties of OSCs. The key physical quantities, as well as the pros and cons of different models, are described in detail. After that, we show some theoretical results to unveil the fundamental and device physics of plasmonic effects in typical OSC structures. Finally, we conclude the chapter and identify future opportunities in this field.

Abstract:Organic solar cells have attracted academic and industrial interests due to the advantages like lightweight, flexibility and roll-to-roll fabrication. Nowadays, 18% power conversion efficiency has been achieved in the state-of-the-art organic solar cells. The recent rapid progress in organic solar cells relies on the continuously emerging new materials and device fabrication technologies, and the deep understanding on film morphology, molecular packing and device physics. Donor and acceptor materials are the key materials for organic solar cells since they determine the device performance. The past 25 years have witnessed an odyssey in developing high-performance donors and acceptors. In this review, we focus on those star materials and milestone work, and introduce the molecular structure evolution of key materials. These key materials include homopolymer donors, D-A copolymer donors, A-D-A small molecular donors, fullerene acceptors and nonfullerene acceptors. At last, we outlook the challenges and very important directions in key materials development.

Abstract:During past several years, the photovoltaic performances of organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved rapid progress with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) over 18%, demonstrating a great practical application prospect. The development of material science including conjugated polymer donors, oligomer-like organic molecule donors, fused and nonfused ring acceptors, polymer acceptors, single-component organic solar cells and water/alcohol soluble interface materials are the key research topics in OSC field. Herein, the recent progress of these aspects is systematically summarized. Meanwhile, the current problems and future development are also discussed.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) have gained a rapid development in the past two decades and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of single-junction OSC has recently approached 20%. The novel materials and device engineering are two key factors of this evolution. In this review, the device engineering, including morphology characterization and optimization, device physics, flexible and large-area OSCs, and stability of OSCs are systematically summarized. In addition, the current challenges, problems and future developments are also discussed.

Abstract:The field of organic solar cells (OSCs) has developed rapidly over the last two decades, and polymer solar cells with power conversion efficiencies of 13.1% have been reported. The understanding of the photophysical mechanisms in photovoltaic devices plays a significant role in determining the optoelectronic properties of high-performance OSCs. This review gives a fundamental description of the photophysical mechanisms in OSCs, with the main emphasis on the exciton transfer and charge-transfer mechanisms. In addition, it highlights the capabilities of various experimental techniques for the characterization of energy transfer and charge transport, as well as their roles in dictating the architecture of photovoltaic devices. Abstract:In the last few decades, organic solar cells (OSCs) have drawn broad interest owing to their advantages such as being low cost, flexible, semitransparent, non-toxic, and ideal for roll-to-roll large-scale processing. Significant advances have been made in the field of OSCs containing high-performance active layer materials, electrodes, and interlayers, as well as novel device structures. Particularly, the innovation of active layer materials, including novel acceptors and donors, has contributed significantly to the power conversion efficiency (PCE) improvement in OSCs. In this review, high-performance acceptors, containing fullerene derivatives, small molecular, and polymeric non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), are discussed in detail. Meanwhile, highly efficient donor materials designed for fullerene- and NFA-based OSCs are also presented. Additionally, motivated by the incessant developments of donor and acceptor materials, recent advances in the field of ternary and tandem OSCs are reviewed as well.

Abstract:We present recent progresses on applying the theoretical models and computational tools in assessing the performance of organic solar cells, especially the bulk heterojunction solar cells. Both the continuum device model and the dynamic Monte Carlo model are developed to investigate the photocurrent-voltage characteristics based on the exciton and charge carrier dynamics. Insights into key factors influencing the organic photovoltaic performances have been gained from these studies.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic hybrid halide perovskites have received extensive attention in the photovoltaic research community due to its remarkable optoelectronic properties, such as high carrier mobility, tunable band gap, long diffusion lengths and long lifetime. In this section, we summarized the understanding of perovskite materials and devices from the perspective of crystal structure, optoelectronic property, device working mechanism, as well as the progress of the solar cells. Abstract:We review recent progress in the modeling of organic solar cells and photovoltaic materials, as well as discuss the underlying theoretical methods with an emphasis on dynamical electronic processes occurring in organic semiconductors. The key feature of the latter is a strong electron-phonon interaction, making the evolution of electronic and structural degrees of freedom inseparable. We discuss commonly used approaches for first-principles modeling of this evolution, focusing on a multiscale framework based on the Holstein–Peierls Hamiltonian solved via polaron transformation. A challenge for both theoretical and experimental investigations of organic solar cells is the complex multiscale morphology of these devices. Nevertheless, predictive modeling of photovoltaic materials and devices is attainable and is rapidly developing, as reviewed here.
