Abstract:A series of CuCoMg nanosheets derived from the LDH precursor were prepared by co-precipitation (CP) strategy and evaluated for the production of ethanol and higher alcohols via CO hydrogenation. The CuCoMg catalyst with a moderate amount of magnesium demonstrated a relatively higher total alcohol selectivity of 46.9%, and the molar percentage of ethanol was 38.5% among the total alcohols. Based on XRD and HRTEM characterizations, the introduction of Mg into the CuCo catalytic system prominently improved the dispersibility of CuCo nanoparticles. More importantly, XPS and in situ CO DRIFT results confirmed the presence of activated surface hydroxyl groups derived from MgO species over the reduced CuCoMg catalyst, which involved in the formation of bicarbonate (b-HCO3-) species. It was conducive to the enhancement of the amount of CHx intermediates on the CuCoMg catalyst surface, which were applied to the CO insertion to synthesize ethanol rather than coupling to produce hydrocarbons in the CO hydrogenation reaction.
Design and Synthesis of Spherical-Platelike Ternary Copper-Cobalt-manganese Catalysts for Direct Conversion of Syngas to Ethanol and Higher Alcohols

Abstract:Novel CuCoMn ternary catalyst with a "spherical-platelike" (CuMn-Co) nanosized particles structure was designed and successfully performed in ethanol and higher alcohols (HA) production via heterogeneous CO hydrogenation. The "spherical-platelike" CuCoMn catalyst, achieved through a simple co-precipitation (CP) route followed by a calcination-reduction process, contained a CuMn-rich sphere structure and a Co-dominated nanosheet. The catalyst demonstrated a total alcohols selectivity of 46.2%, and the fraction of ethanol reached up to 45.4% among the total alcohols products, which is superior to the classical modified CuCo-based catalysts. The outstanding catalytic performance was attributed to the unique "spherical-platelike" structure, which altered the surface Cu+/Cu-0 distribution and the dispersion of Co species. As revealed by in situ XRD, H-2-TPR, in situ XPS, HAADF-STEM and in situ DRIFT spectra techniques, a strong electronic and geometric interaction between Cu and Mn species in optimized CuCoMn catalyst modified the chemical states of Cu species to present a higher proportion of surface Cu+/(Cu-0 + Cu+) and, especially, enhanced the linear CO adsorption on Cu+ active sites, which provided a higher probability of CO insertion, and eventually contributed to promotion of catalytic performance. In addition, a higher probability of bridge CO adsorption on metallic Co was also observed over the CuCoMn catalyst, which was beneficial for the formation of CHx intermediates. It is concluded that a synergistic effect between Cu+ and Co species, promoted by the presence of manganese species, was responsible for CO hydrogenation to produce ethanol. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:A multifunctional catalyst composed of CoMn and CuZnAlZr oxides can dramatically increase higher-alcohol selectivity. However, the role of Cu-based components and catalytic mechanism are still unclear. Herein, a series of multifunctional catalysts containing CoMn oxides and different Cu-based components were constructed to investigate the influence of a Cu component, and a link between methanol synthesis and higher-alcohol synthesis was established. It was found that the Cu-based components with different methanol synthesis activity showed a different promotional effect for higher-alcohol synthesis. The sole Cu-based component exhibited higher activity for methanol synthesis, and higher selectivity for C2+ oxygenates was achieved for the corresponding mixed catalyst system. In situ DRIFTs indicated that the CHxO* species were mainly produced over the Cu-based components. The formed CHxO* species bridged the CoMn and Cu-based component and promoted the formation of higher alcohols.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A series of CuCoM (M=Fe, Cr, Ga and Al) nanoplates derived from hydrotalcite-like precursors were synthesized by co-precipitation method and evaluated for ethanol and higher alcohols (HA) from syngas. The CuCoAl nanoplates demonstrated prominently improved HA selectivity of 54.9 %, and the fraction of ethanol/HA reached up to 55.9 % level. As revealed by XRD and HAADF-STEM results, the presence of Al species in the CuCoAl nanoplates obviously enhanced the dispersion ability of Cu and Co species. Moreover, the abundance of basic sites (surface hydroxyl groups) on CuCoAl nanoplates resulted in the formation of formate species, which was a significant C-1 species for the generation of CHx intermediates. More importantly, a high probability of CO bridge adsorption on metallic Co atoms was found over optimized CuCoAl catalyst, which provided a favorable effect for CO dissociation, leading to the formation of CHx intermediates. Therefore, more CHx intermediates were generated from the formate species and CO bridge adsorption on metallic Co atoms, which provided a beneficial role for C-C chain growth in the higher alcohols production in CO hydrogenation reaction. Furthermore, a moderate ratio of surface Cu/Co was observed over optimized CuCoAl nanoplates, which can exert a synergetic effect between Cu and Co species. Ultimately, the enhanced catalytic performance was attributed to the combination of the Cu and Co species and the basic property of the CuCoAl nanoplates.

Abstract:Ultrathin CuCoAl nanosheets derived from layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursor (1-3 cationic-layers) were successfully synthesized by aqueous miscible organic solvent treatment (AMOST) strategy and performed for ethanol and higher alcohols production via CO hydrogenation. The ultrathin CuCoAl nanosheets (CuCo-LDH-aw) demonstrated a comparatively higher total alcohols (ROH) selectivity of 47.6%, and the molar fraction of ethanol reached up to 37.5% among the total alcohols. As revealed by XRD, HRTEM, SEM, BET and AFM characterizations, the uniform dispersion of CuCo NPs was observed over the ultrathin CuCoAl nanosheets. Moreover, the optimum ultrathin CuCoAl nanosheets exhibited a higher ratio of Cu + /(Cu 0 +Cu + ), which exerted a positive role on non-dissociative CO * insertion CH x intermediates. More significantly, XPS and in situ CO-DRIFT techniques uncovered the formation of CH x intermediates derived from bridge CO dissociation on the metallic Co species and the formate hydrodeoxygenation route, which involved CO * and surface hydroxyl groups (-OH) reaction. Consequently, it was concluded that the triply synergistic effect of Cu + , Co and surface hydroxyl groups (-OH) species contributed to the improvement in ethanol selectivity via CO hydrogenation.

Abstract:A series of highly dispersed carbon nanotube (CNT)-supported copper–cobalt–cerium catalysts were prepared using a facile and effective co-impregnation method. The catalysts were then examined for their ability to selectively convert syngas into ethanol and higher (C2+) alcohols with a narrow range distribution. Superior selectivity values of 31.6% and 60.2% for the formation of ethanol and C2+ alcohols, respectively, were achieved over the CuCoCe/CNTs catalyst. These values were considerably higher than those achieved over a Cu–Co bimetallic catalyst (i.e., 16.6% and 29.7%). The addition of ceria alters the electronic and geometric interactions with the cobalt species, thereby promoting the reduction of CoO and the formation of a Co–CeO2− x interface as a new active site for enhancing CO dissociation and terminating carbon chain growth by oxygenation. In contrast, the CNTs serve as reactors to ensure intimate contact among the metal particles at the nanoscale. The structure–performance correlation studies suggest that the formation of the Co–CeO2−x interface plays a key role in determining the distribution of short-chain alcohols.

Abstract:Currently, the Cu-based catalyst has become a promising candidate for ethanol and higher alcohols synthesis (HAs) from synthesis gas (H2 + CO), but all these catalysts contain F–T elements (e.g., Co and Fe) and alkalis because carbon chain growth reaction occurs on these metal components. Herein, two series of ternary CuZnAlOOH catalysts with various Cu and Al proportions were synthesized using a complete liquid-phase method and studied in the conversion of syngas in a slurry bed reactor. Significantly higher selectivity of ethanol (40 wt %) and HA (65 wt %) with approximately 20% CO conversion was achieved when the n(Cu)/n(Al) = 2/0.8, which was ascribed the highest copper surface area (SCu) and the surface Cu content. It was found that the Cu component had a significant effect on CO conversion, while the Al component had more influence on the selectivity of HA. Besides, the coke deposition was discovered to be the main reason for catalyst deactivation. The generation of hydrocarbons and alcohols followed A–S–F distributions, which was consistent with a representative mechanism of HA generation by CO insertion into the CHx intermediate. A synergetic mechanism between Cu0–Cu+ and AlOOH active sites was proposed based on the characterization analysis and activity results, in which Cu0–Cu+ synergy acted as sites for H2 dissociative adsorption and associative adsorption of CO, while the AlOOH facilitated the dissociation of the C–O bond. Bifunctionality of the Cu and AlOOH active sites and their cooperation created their synergy in CO hydrogenation to ethanol and HA. This work provided us a new concept to understand and develop carbon chain growth mechanism, and it also could provide reference for other related carbon chain growth reactions.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide reduction has been regarded as a promising strategy for the generation of value-added multi-carbon compounds. Taking advantage of the synergy of the distinct chemical characters of adsorption sites, the single-atom Sc-doped Cu(111) surface exhibits excellent performance for C2H4 selectivity. O is more strongly bound to Sc than C to Cu, leading to the facilitation of CO2 activation and C2H4 desorption. The Sc dopant promotes C–C dimerization through the CO dimer into COCO, which is difficult to occur on the pristine Cu(111), and the COCOinvolved reaction pathway is favorable both in thermodynamics and kinetics. This study sheds light on nanocatalyst design for reaction products with different chemical characters from reactants. Typically, the control of the electron-deficient and electron-sufficient sites on catalyst surfaces is beneficial for chemical reactions with oxygenated reactants and hydrocarbon products.

Abstract:The nanosheets structured K–Co–MoS2 catalyst was prepared through a one-step hydrothermal synthesis combined with the wetness impregnation. The fresh catalyst has a high dispersion of Co–Mo–S active phase and no Co9S8 is found. The pure H2 activated catalyst shows a higher intrinsic activity, especially the C2+OH selectivity for the higher alcohol synthesis compared to the one activated by 5% H2/N2 atmosphere. The reason is attributed to that the pure H2 activation more effectively suppresses the formation of Co9S8 and stabilizes the Co–Mo–S active phase during the reaction due to the formation of SH species.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of CO2 into high-value chemicals is an effective approach to address environmental issues. Cobalt-based catalysts have significant potential in CO2 hydrogenation reaction systems; however, there is a need to control their selectivity better. In this study, copper is introduced onto Co3O4 nanosheets using the ion exchange reverse loading method. The unique interaction of these materials significantly alters the selectivity of the cobalt-based catalyst. Results from scanning transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicate that this catalyst enables a more even dispersion of copper species in the Co3O4 nanosheets. Temperature-programmed reduction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveal that the catalyst facilitates the metal–metal interaction between Co and Cu. Temperature-programmed desorption experiments for CO2 and H2 demonstrate that the close interaction between Co and Cu modifies CO2 adsorption, leading to differences in catalytic activity. Moreover, the catalyst effectively suppresses CO2 methanation and promotes methanol formation by altering the alkalinity of the catalyst surface and weakening the hydrogen dissociation ability.

Abstract:Catalytic synthesis of C1-C4 mixed alcohols from syngas is important to the energy and environment issues. C1-C4 mixed alcohols can be directly used as gasoline additives (octane boosters). The present work focuses on the catalytic performance of modified Cu-based catalysts in CO hydrogenation to C1-C4 mixed alcohols. Cobalt, iron or nickel modified Cu/ZrO2 catalysts were prepared by impregnation method. The CO hydrogenation was carried out in a high-pressure fixed-bed flow type reactor under the reaction conditions of H2/CO=2, 6.0 MPa, 523-673 K, and 10000 h-1. The prepared catalysts were characterized with the methods of N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope and H2 temperature programmed reduction. The modification of Cu/ZrO2 with Co or Ni could increase CO conversion and the space-time yield of iso-butyl alcohol in the CO hydrogenation. Incorporation of Mn into ZrO2 support was also in favor of forming iso-butyl alcohol.

Abstract:A series of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-supported cobalt-ceriacatalysts were designed, synthesized, and tested in afixed-bed reactor forselectively converting syngas into higher alcohols and long chain hydrocarbons.In order to investigate the synergistic effect of cobalt and ceria, differentgeometric structures of Co-CeO2-xwere adjusted and designed by using theconfinement effects of nanotubes and catalyst loading amounts. Theselectivities for the production of C2+alcohols and ethanol using10Co10Ce/CNTs were 67.0% and 38.4%, respectively, among the alcoholdistribution. CeO2-xeffectively provided sites for regulating the ratio of Co0/Co delta+in the cobalt particles. The intimate contact between cobalt and ceriaspecies in the CNT channels was favorable for the synthesis of higher alcohols.However, the separation of the Co-CeO2-xsites on the exterior surface ofCNTs could weaken the synergistic effect of the two sites, increase Co0contentin metallic-oxide Co pairs, and thus, lead to the formation of long-chain hydrocarbons. Abstract:Ethanol and higher alcohols have been identified as potential fuel additives or hydrogen carriers for use in fuel cells. One method of ethanol production is catalytic conversion of syngas (a mixture of CO, H2, CO2, and H2O), derived from biomass, coal, or natural gas. Thermodynamics of CO hydrogenation shows that ethanol is favored as the sole product at conditions of practical interest, but if methane is allowed as product in this analysis, essentially no ethanol is formed at equilibrium. The kinetics of ethanol formation must therefore be maximized. Although rhodium-based catalysts give C2 + oxygenates with high selectivity, their prohibitive cost has spurred research on less expensive copper-based alternatives. Copper-based catalysts require an optimum amount of promoter to suppress undesired reactions and maximize the yields of ethanol and higher alcohols. Common promoters include alkali, transition metals and their oxides, and rare earth oxides. Careful selection of operating variables is also necessary to achieve the desired activity and selectivity. This review describes the effects of promoters, supports, and operating conditions on the performance of copper-based catalysts for conversion of dry syngas to ethanol and higher alcohols. Proposed mechanisms from the literature for ethanol and higher-alcohol synthesis are outlined.

Abstract:CO hydrogenation to higher alcohols (C2+OH) provides a promising route to convert coal, natural gas, shale gas, and biomass feedstocks into value-added chemicals and transportation fuels. However, the development of nonprecious metal catalysts with satisfactory activity and well-defined selectivity toward C2+OH remains challenging and impedes the commercialization of this process. Here, we show that the synergistic geometric and electronic interactions dictate the activity of Cu0–χ-Fe5C2 binary catalysts for selective CO hydrogenation to C2+OH, outperforming silica-supported precious Rh-based catalysts, by using a combination of experimental evidence from bulk, surface-sensitive, and imaging techniques collected on real and high-performance Cu–Fe binary catalytic systems coupled with density functional theory calculations. The closer is the d-band center to the Fermi level of Cu0–χ-Fe5C2(510) surface than those of χ-Fe5C2(510) and Rh(111) surface, and the electron-rich interface of Cu0–χ-Fe5C2(510) due to the delocalized electron transfer from Cu0 atoms, facilitates CO activation and CO insertion into alkyl species to C2-oxygenates at the interface of Cu0–χ-Fe5C2(510) and thus enhances C2H5OH selectivity. Starting from the CHCO intermediate, the proposed reaction pathway for CO hydrogenation to C2H5OH on Cu0–χ-Fe5C2(510) is CHCO + (H) → CH2CO + (H) → CH3CO + (H) → CH3CHO + (H) → CH3CH2O + (H) → C2H5OH.
