Abstract:Polymer binders that combine active materials with conductive agents have played a critical role in maintaining the structural integrity of phosphorus anodes with a huge volume change upon sodiation/desodiation. Herein, the role of binders on the structural/chemical stability of phosphorus/carbon anode is spectroscopically uncovered through unexpected mechanism. Surprisingly, the selection of different binders is found to determine the oxidation degree of active phosphorus in various electrodes, which correlate well with their electrochemical properties. At a high oxidation degree, the electrode applying a conventional poly(vinylidene difluoride) binder displays the worst electrochemical properties, while the electrode using a sodium alginate binder delivers the best electrochemical performance (a highly reversible capacity of 1064 mAh g−1 with a 90.1% capacity retention at 800 mA g−1 after 200 cycles and an outstanding rate capability of 401 mAh g−1 at 8000 mA g−1) for its negligible oxidation. Additionally, the emergence/decomposition of surface intermediates, including (PO2)3− and (PO4)3− species, are observed in the discharging/charging processes via the ex situ P K‐edge X‐ray absorption spectroscopies. This novel discovery of the unique role of binders in phosphorus anodes, not only provides an opportunity to ameliorate their electrochemical properties, but also enables their practical applications in high‐energy sodium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:MXenes and sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (S-PAN) are emerging as possible contenders to resolve the polysulfide dissolution and volumetric expansion issues in sodium-sulfur batteries. Herein, we explore the interactions between Ti3C2Tx MXenes and S-PAN with traditional binders such as polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in Na-S batteries for the first time. We hypothesize that the linearity and polarity of the binder significantly influence the dispersion of S-PAN over Ti3C2Tx. The three-dimensional polar CMC binder resulted in better contact surface area with both S-PAN and Ti3C2Tx. Moreover, the improved binding of the discharge products with the CMC binder effectively traps them and prevents unwanted shuttling. Consequently, the Na-S battery using the CMC binder displayed a high initial capacity of 1282 mAh/g(s) at 0.2 C and a low capacity fading of 0.092% per cycle over 300 cycles. This work highlights the importance of understanding MXene-binder interactions in sulfur cathodes.

Abstract:Sulfur species dissolution, precipitation and phase transformation during the charge and discharge process strongly affect the performance of lithium sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Interface properties between electrode and electrolyte play an important role in these batteries. In this work, four kinds of binders with different functionalities, which differs both in chemical and electrical properties, are employed to study how the interface properties affect the battery reaction mechanism. The phase transformation of sulfur species is studied in detail. Remarkable differences are observed among sulfur cathodes with different binders. More solid-phase sulfur species precipitation is observed with binders that have carbonyl functional groups, like poly(9, 9-dioctylfluorene-co-fluorenone-co-methylbenzoic ester) (PFM) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), in both fully charged and discharged states. Also, the improved conductivity from introducing conductive binders greatly promotes sulfur species precipitation. These findings suggest that the contributions from functional groups affinity and binder conductivity lead to more sulfur transformation into the solid phase, so the shuttle effect can be greatly reduced, and a better cell performance can be obtained.

Abstract:Abstract As an indispensable part of the lithium-ion battery (LIB), a binder takes a small share of less than 3% (by weight) in the cell; however, it plays multiple roles. The binder is decisive in the slurry rheology, thus influencing the coating process and the resultant porous structures of electrodes. Usually, binders are considered to be inert in conventional LIBs. In the pursuit of higher energy density, many new binders are being developed for specific targets, such as the high-voltage (typically, $$\geqslant$$ ⩾ 4.5 V) cathodes, conversion/alloy-type cathodes/anodes with large volume effect, and solid-state batteries (SSBs), in which these binders demonstrate their various functions. They may influence the solid electrolyte interface component, ensure the electrode/electrolyte interfacial stability, transport ions/electrons in the electrodes, provide adhesion and flexibility to solid-state electrolyte (SSE) films, etc. Here in this review, we try to summarize the advances on binders, among which the ones for high-voltage cathode materials, thick electrodes, micro-sized silicon particles, SSEs and SSBs are highlighted. We believe that the advanced functional binders would play decisive roles in the future development of high-energy–density LIBs and SSBs. Influence of Copolymer Chain Sequence on Electrode Latex Binder for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Electrode binders have significant influences on lithium-ion battery performance. Good binders should be able to absorb electrolyte to accelerate lithium-ion transport while simultaneously maintaining adequate adhesion and mechanical strength after swelling. Currently, most polymer binders are based on homo or random copolymers so they may only meet one of these requirements, as an improvement in electrolyte swelling ability is detrimental to mechanical strength, and vice versa. This work investigates whether the design of chain sequence can resolve this contradiction. Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization is employed to synthesize copolymer latex with different chain sequences as electrode binders, which are examined in both LiFePO4 cathode and silicon anodes. The results show a triblock copolymer chain sequence gives the best performance. The microphase separation in triblock copolymer distributes functionalities of electrolyte affinity and strength maintenance into disparate blocks and therefore satisfies both requirements simultaneously. The advantages of triblock chain sequence are demonstrated by superior ionic conductivity, mechanical strength after electrolyte absorption, and lithium-ion diffusion coefficient and then lead to better battery performance compared with random counterpart and commercial aqueous binders.

Abstract:A completely new role of binder influencing lithium‐ion (Li+) (de‐)solvation process is discovered, which can affect the electrode performance significantly. It is found that the binder functional group can serve as a probe to show the dynamic Li+ (de‐)solvation process. This study complements the understanding of the effect of binder chemistry on interfacial Li+ (de‐)solvation. Binder plays a pivotal role in the development of lithium‐ion batteries as it must be used to adhere electrode materials on current collectors tightly to guarantee stability. Then, many binder molecules have been designed to enhance the adhesion capability, and conductivity, and/or form a robust solid electrolyte interphase layer for better performance. However, the binder effect on the lithium‐ion (i.e., Li+) de‐solvation on the electrode surface has never been reported before. Herein, it is reported that the binder can influence the Li+ (de‐)solvation process significantly, where its functional group can serve as a probe to detect the dynamic Li+ (de‐)solvation process. It is discovered that different binder functional groups (e.g., *─COO− versus *─F) can affect the Li+‐solvent arrangement on the electrode surface, leading to different degrees of side‐reactions, rate capabilities, and/or the tolerance against Li+‐solvent co‐insertion for the graphite anode, such as in the propylene carbonate‐based electrolyte. A molecular interfacial model related to the electrolyte component's behaviors and binder functional group is proposed to interpret the varied electrode performance. This discovery opens a new avenue for studying the interactions between the binder and electrolyte solvation structure, in turn helping to understand electrode performances underlying the micro‐structures.

Abstract:: Binders have a great impact on the performance of lithium-ion batteries, although small doses of binder is applied. The traditional binder poly (vinylidene fluoride) cannot meet the requirements of modern lithium-ion batteries, especially those with high specific capacity, because it interacts with electrode materials through weak Van de Waals force. The surfaces of most electrode materials have polar groups which can strongly interact with polar polymeric binders. Therefore, the polar polymeric binders have been paid much attention, recently. Many factors of polar polymeric binders influence the properties of lithium-ion batteries. This review mainly focuses on the impacts of structure properties of polar polymeric binders on lithium-ion batteries, including structural feature, adhesiveness, mechanical properties, conductivity, and other properties Besides, we propose the strategies of designing next-generation binders for lithium-ion batteries from molecular level, and claim the future direction and prospects of the binders.

Abstract:Binders play an important role in providing connection between active electrode materials with the conductive agent, thus enabling electronic/ionic pathways and good mechanical properties of battery electrodes. 1 In the first part of my talk, I will discuss the case of binders for high volume expansion electrodes (e.g. Si), where cycle life is strongly reduced by cracking of active particles and solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs), the process which in turn consumes the electrolyte continuously. Abstract:Polymer binders have been shown to efficiently conquer the notorious lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttle effects in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries for years, but more study is needed. Herein, a water dispersible and molecular interaction regulated polymer binder (PNAVS) for Li-S batteries was elaborately designed by co-polymerizing N-acryloyl glycinamide and 3-(1-vinyl-3-imidazolio)propanesulfonate. We demonstrate that by modulating the multiple interactions between the functional groups through copolymerization the binder was able to coordinate the LiPSs with higher binding energy for shuttle effect alleviation and cycling performance improvement. In addition, the Li+ diffusion coefficient is also optimized in the PNAVS binder, which facilitates acceleration of the redox kinetics during cycling. Consequently, the PNAVS binder renders the Li-S battery with an ultrastable open circuit voltage for more than 3000 h. Even with a high sulfur loading of 11.7 mg cm-2, the battery can still exhibit excellent areal capacity of 12.21 mA h cm-2. As proof of concept, a pouch cell was also demonstrated with the stable cycling performance for 110 cycles. The binder engineering strategy in this work will propel the practical applications of high-performance batteries.

Abstract:Polymer based binder plays an important role in electrode structures for varies energy storage systems such as battery and capacitor. In conventional wet coating process for battery electrode fabrication process, the polymer binders are mixed with the active material and conductive additives to form the slurry for the coating. The binders provide both physical and chemical supporting to the overall electrode structure, in addition to the basic “gluing” function. In recent years, a lot of aqueous soluble polymers were introduced in lithium-ion battery study working as alternative of traditional PVDF binder. The application of aqueous based polymer binder covers graphite, silicon, metal oxide, and even sulfur electrode fabrication. In this talk we will present some of our recent study on selected polymer binders in certain chemistry, such as Li-S system. We will reveal the difference in both physical and chemical properties of the selected binders, as well as the impact on the overall electrochemical performance. We will also discuss the binder selection and challenges from manufacturing point of view.
Hydrophilic Binder Interface Interactions Inducing Inadhesion and Capacity Collapse in Sodium-Ion Battery

Abstract:A nanoscale pseudo-graphite hard carbon offers marvelous electrochemistry properties for the sodium ion battery as anode, exhibiting a superb initial Coulombic efficiency of 86% with the sodium alginate binder, which is presumably ascribed to thin and smooth solid electrolyte interface layer. The aforesaid binder system delivers an optimal reversible capacity of 344.4 mA h g(-1), maintaining 324.8 mA h g(-1) (94.3% at 100th cycle) and 284.8 mA h g(-1) (82.6% at 200th cycle) at 0.1C. However, this capacity collapses from 230th cycle with a representative "bluff" curve, which frequently occurs in hydrophilic binders noteworthily. Consequently, the characteristics of the sodium alginate binder are intensively explored: (a) carboxy groups build up the typical multi-dimensional infiltration network by constructing renewable hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) skeleton. (2) This network mitigates the intergranular spacing, infiltrates the micropores and decorates the solid-electrolyte-interface layer, (c) which restrains the network from decomposition caused by the electrolyte. (d) Repeated current impacting and the oxidative decomposition from the NaClO4 electrolyte eventually break the network structure, leading to in-adhesion and "bluff" capacity fading.
High-Rate and Long-Cycle Cathode for Sodium-Ion Batteries: Enhanced Electrode Stability and Kinetics via Binder Adjustment

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are heralded as promising candidates for grid-scale energy storage systems due to their low cost and abundant sodium resources. Excellent rate capacity and outstanding cycling stability are always the goals for SIBs. Up to now, nearly all attention has been focused on the control of morphology and structure of electrode materials, but the influence of binders on their performance is neglected, especially in cathode materials. Herein, using Na3V2(PO4)2O2F (NVPOF) as a cathode material, the influence of four different binders (sodium alginate, SA; carboxymethylcellulose sodium, CMC; poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF; and poly(acrylic latex), LA133) on its electrochemical performance is studied. As a result, when using SA as the binder, the electrochemical performance of the NVPOF electrode is improved significantly, which is mainly because of the high water solubility, rich carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, and high adhesive and cohesive properties of the SA binder, leading to the uniform distribution of active materials NVPOF and carbon black in electrodes, good integrity, low polarization, and superior kinetic properties of the NVPOF electrodes, as demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique. More importantly, when coupled with a hard carbon anode, the fabricated sodium-ion full cells also exhibit excellent rate performance, thus providing a preview of their practical application. This work shows that the battery performance can be improved by matching suitable binder systems, which is believed to have great importance for the further optimization of the electrochemical performance of SIBs.

Abstract:The development history and recent progress of binders for rechargeable sodium batteries (RSBs) including sodium‐ion batteries and sodium–sulfur batteries are summarized. Critical and constructive insights are given from both underlying mechanistic and practical engineering perspectives to promote further development of advanced binders for high‐performance RSBs Supply restrictions and associated price increase of lithium limit the large‐scale application of rechargeable lithium batteries (RLBs) in electric energy storage. Rechargeable sodium batteries (RSBs) with the advantage of large abundance and low cost of sodium, are developed to relieve the supply pressure of RLBs. Binders serve as a bridge between active materials and other components to maintain electrode integrity and electrical contact; however, they have not been sufficiently explored in RSBs. In this review, the working mechanism of binders for RSBs is proposed and more desirable features of RSB binders than their RLB counterparts are emphasized. The development history and recent progress of binders for RSBs are outlined. It is highlighted that the matching principles of binders to different electrode materials are proposed. Advanced characterization and simulation techniques are presented to interpret the electrochemical findings and reveal the working mechanism of novel binders in various electrodes of RSBs. Finally, perspectives on the development of effective binders for RSBs are presented.

Consequences of Utilizing a Redox-Active Polymeric Binder in Li-ion Batteries

Abstract:Development of new polymeric binders can help enable the use of silicon-rich anodes in Li-ion batteries, by providing stronger adhesion to the active material particles. The compositional features that improve interfacial interactions and mechanical properties can often impart electronic conductivity and redox activity to these polymers, which are generally seen as beneficial to cell performance. Alternatively, it is also possible that the addition of charge-transferring centers to the electrode can accelerate cell degradation. Here, we use an aromatic polyimide (~320 mAh/g of reversible capacity) to explore how a redox-active conductive polymer can affect cell performance. We demonstrate that the lithiated polymer is less stable than the traditional binders upon storage, leading to increased rates of calendar aging. Furthermore, we show that the adhesion properties of the polymer deteriorate upon repeated cycling, to an extent that is proportional to the degree of delithiation of the binder. More critically, we show that progressive degradation of the redox behavior of the polymer leads to the release of extra Li+ into the cell, which can give the false perception of good performance even under conditions of poor stability. Our work suggests that redox-active conductive binders can sometimes be detrimental to cell performance, and that works evaluating new polymers must include careful experimental validation under realistic conditions.

Polymer binder: a key component in negative electrodes for high-energy Na-ion batteries

Abstract:In the hope of finding potential replacements of Li-ion batteries, in which lithium, a minor-metal is used as ion carrier, Na-ion batteries that are operable at high voltage, higher than 3 volts, under ambient condition are attractive to develop much low-priced energy systems. However, owing to the larger atomic/ionic volume of sodium than that of lithium, severer volume change upon sodiation/desodiation inevitably deteriorates the performance of Na-ion batteries. Polymer binder, as a key component in maintaining the structural integrity during the volume change with pre-formed SEI effect, has not been thoroughly discussed for negative electrode in Na-ion batteries. In this review, we summarized several advanced polymer binders that have already been reported, and introduced their recent advances for high capacity electrode in Na cells.

Influence of the Binder properties on Silicon Anode for Solid-State Batteries

Abstract:Silicon (Si) has been considered as one of the most promising anode materials because of its high theoretical capacity of 4200 mAh g−1. However, the huge volume change and side reactions upon cycling cause poor cycle performance and limit a use of Si for the commercialization. Recently all solid-state batteries open up new possibilities for an introduction of high capacity electrode materials due to their ability to operate under compression, which can mitigate electrode volume expansion. Herein, we study an effect of multifunctional polymeric binders on silicon anode for all solid-state batteries enabled by a sulfide Li6PS5Cl electrolyte. The Si electrode manufactured by a single rigid polymer shows stable electrochemical properties because of applied external pressure and potential hydrogen bonds between carboxyl groups and Si particles, resulting in a mitigation of a volume change. In addition, an introduction of multifunctional network binders to the Si-based electrode leads to a high discharge capacity of 3000 mAh g−1 and stable cycle performances at room temperature.
