Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries are important energy storage devices and power sources for electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). Electrodes in lithium-ion batteries consist of electrochemical-active materials, conductive agent and binder polymers. Binder works like a neural network connecting each part of electrode system and performs two major functions: the first one is to cohere active materials and conducting additive agent into integrity, as well as bind the matrix laminate and the current collector together. The second one is to build electron and ion circuits to guarantee the effective lithiation and delithiation. Therefore, binder, with minor content in electrode system, not only guarantees the integrity of electrode but also has enormous impacts on the stability and cyclic performance of electrodes. In this work, state of marketing and working mechanism of binder in electrode are introduced, conventional and multifunctional binders with rational tailor in latest years are reviewed, and the battery failure related to binders along with the maintaining challenges in battery field are discussed. What’s more, a general conclusion and instructive directions of binders for future research are presented.

Abstract:As an integral component of electrodes, binder is one of the key factors for improving of the performance and prolonging the service life of lithium batteries. To predict the service life of lithium batteries, observing the impedance evolution of batteries during the cycling process has been considered as a promising strategy. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as an effective measurement has been applied in numerous studies to explore the impedance behavior of lithium batteries. Therefore, this paper reviews the influencing factors of the impedance variation during charging and discharging processes and the influence of various binders on the impedance performance of lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, an outlook is proposed for the modification of binders to improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Abstract As an indispensable part of the lithium-ion battery (LIB), a binder takes a small share of less than 3% (by weight) in the cell; however, it plays multiple roles. The binder is decisive in the slurry rheology, thus influencing the coating process and the resultant porous structures of electrodes. Usually, binders are considered to be inert in conventional LIBs. In the pursuit of higher energy density, many new binders are being developed for specific targets, such as the high-voltage (typically, $$\geqslant$$ ⩾ 4.5 V) cathodes, conversion/alloy-type cathodes/anodes with large volume effect, and solid-state batteries (SSBs), in which these binders demonstrate their various functions. They may influence the solid electrolyte interface component, ensure the electrode/electrolyte interfacial stability, transport ions/electrons in the electrodes, provide adhesion and flexibility to solid-state electrolyte (SSE) films, etc. Here in this review, we try to summarize the advances on binders, among which the ones for high-voltage cathode materials, thick electrodes, micro-sized silicon particles, SSEs and SSBs are highlighted. We believe that the advanced functional binders would play decisive roles in the future development of high-energy–density LIBs and SSBs. Abstract:Developing high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density, rate capability and long cycle life are essential for the ever-growing practical application. Among all battery components, the binder plays a key role in determining the preparation of electrodes and the improvement of battery performance, in spite of a low usage amount. The main function of binder is to bond the active material, conductive additive and current collector together and provide electron and ion channels to improve the kinetics of electrochemical reaction. With the ever-increasing requirement of high energy density by LIBs, technical challenges such as volume expansion and active material dissolution are attracting worldwide attentions, where binder is thought to provide a new solution. There are two main categories (organic solvent soluble binder and water-soluble binder) and abundant polar functional groups providing adhesion ability. It is of great significance to timely summarize the latest progress in battery binders and present the principles for designing novel binders with both robust binding interaction and outstanding electrode stabilization function. This review begins with an introduction of the binding mechanism and the related binding forces, including mechanical interlocking forces and interfacial forces. Then, we discussed four different strategies (the enhancement of binding force, the formation of three-dimensional (3D) network, the enhancement of conductivity and binders with special functions) for constructing ideal binder system in order to satisfy the specific demands of different batteries, such as LIBs and lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Finally, some prospective and promising directions of binder design are proposed based on the existing and emerging binders and guide the development of the next-generation LIBs.

Abstract:Li-ion batteries (LIBs) are used in several applications, such as portable electronics and electric vehicles, owing to their high energy density, and longer cycle life. LIB's functionality and reliability are intensely improved by the binder materials used in the electrode assembling development. Classically polymeric compounds and binder materials are essential for electrode construction as they interlock active materials and conductive additives, granting mechanical stability and electron/ion transport pathways. Binder migration has numerous hostile impacts, incorporating diminished electrode stability, intensified internal resistance, defeat of active material exploitation, and prospective short-circuiting, which result in capacity weakening, declined cycle life, and compromised safety. Thus, the design of electrodes plays a crucial role in the performance of commercial rechargeable batteries, as their properties significantly impact battery cell performance. This review summarizes the reported phenomena of binder migration in both anode and cathode materials and discusses some of the attempted solutions to overcome or alleviate this issue. Some of the approaches that were taken to alleviate the binder migration issue as well as limitations of each approach are summarized. Finally, future perspectives are further presented to fully address the binder migration issue.

Abstract:A water-based binder was prepared by blending polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The effects of the binder on the internal resistance and electrochemical performance of lithium iron phosphate batteries were analyzed by comparing it with LA133 water binder and PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride). First, positive electrode sheets were prepared by using PVDF, PAA/PVA, and LA133 as binders, respectively, and the effects of binders on the resistivity and compaction density of electrode sheets were analyzed. Then, the buckle battery and the 14500 steel shell full battery were prepared by using PVDF, PAA/PVA, and LA133 as binders, respectively. The influence of the positive electrode materials prepared by different binders on the internal resistance of the battery and on the charge and discharge performance and cycle performance of the battery was analyzed.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are promising next-generation high energy density batteries but their practical application is hindered by several key problems, such as the intermediate polysulfide shuttling and the electrode degradation caused by the sulfur volume changes. Binder acts as one of the most essential components to build the electrodes of Li-S batteries, playing vital roles in improving the performance and maintaining the integrity of the cathode structure during cycling, especially those with high sulfur loadings. To date, tremendous efforts have been devoted to improving the properties of binders, in terms of the viscosity, elasticity, stability, toughness and conductivity, by optimizing the composition and structure of polymer binders. Moreover, the binder modification endows them strong polysulfide trapping ability to suppress the shuttling and decreases the swelling to maintain the porous structure of cathode. In this review, we summarize the recent progress on the binders for Li-S batteries and discuss the various routes, including the binder combination use, functionalization, in-situ polymerization and ion cross-linking, etc., to enhance their performance in stabilizing the cathode, building the high sulfur loading electrode and improving the cyclic stability. At last, the design principles and the problems in further applications are also highlighted.

Abstract:With the continual increase in CO2 levels and toward a sustainable society, developing high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is crucial. A suitable electrode design is the key to enhancing the quality of battery cells (e.g., cycle retention characteristics and rate capabilities), and the binder plays an important role in providing sufficient adhesion between the active material, conductive agent, and current collector. Despite significant advances in the development of novel binder materials and solutions that can be employed as anode and cathode materials, careful investigations and summaries of the assessment methods for binder materials remain lacking. In this review, we examine the different analyses used to assess the quality of binder materials and how they help in assessing the quality of the electrode design. In addition, future perspectives on binder assessment are presented, which can be applied to future research directed toward binder development for advanced LIBs or post-LIBs.

Abstract:Polymer binders that combine active materials with conductive agents have played a critical role in maintaining the structural integrity of phosphorus anodes with a huge volume change upon sodiation/desodiation. Herein, the role of binders on the structural/chemical stability of phosphorus/carbon anode is spectroscopically uncovered through unexpected mechanism. Surprisingly, the selection of different binders is found to determine the oxidation degree of active phosphorus in various electrodes, which correlate well with their electrochemical properties. At a high oxidation degree, the electrode applying a conventional poly(vinylidene difluoride) binder displays the worst electrochemical properties, while the electrode using a sodium alginate binder delivers the best electrochemical performance (a highly reversible capacity of 1064 mAh g−1 with a 90.1% capacity retention at 800 mA g−1 after 200 cycles and an outstanding rate capability of 401 mAh g−1 at 8000 mA g−1) for its negligible oxidation. Additionally, the emergence/decomposition of surface intermediates, including (PO2)3− and (PO4)3− species, are observed in the discharging/charging processes via the ex situ P K‐edge X‐ray absorption spectroscopies. This novel discovery of the unique role of binders in phosphorus anodes, not only provides an opportunity to ameliorate their electrochemical properties, but also enables their practical applications in high‐energy sodium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:: Binders have a great impact on the performance of lithium-ion batteries, although small doses of binder is applied. The traditional binder poly (vinylidene fluoride) cannot meet the requirements of modern lithium-ion batteries, especially those with high specific capacity, because it interacts with electrode materials through weak Van de Waals force. The surfaces of most electrode materials have polar groups which can strongly interact with polar polymeric binders. Therefore, the polar polymeric binders have been paid much attention, recently. Many factors of polar polymeric binders influence the properties of lithium-ion batteries. This review mainly focuses on the impacts of structure properties of polar polymeric binders on lithium-ion batteries, including structural feature, adhesiveness, mechanical properties, conductivity, and other properties Besides, we propose the strategies of designing next-generation binders for lithium-ion batteries from molecular level, and claim the future direction and prospects of the binders.

Abstract:A binder is an important component in lithium-ion batteries and plays a significant role in maintaining the properties of active substances. Most studies in the field of binders have only focussed on physical properties such as bonding performance. Here, a polyacrylic acid-modified binder was designed and adapted to Li[Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1]O2, which enhanced the electrochemical stability of Li[Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1]O2 from 30.2 to 66.6% (300 cycles at 1 C). Abstract:The development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is important in the realm of energy storage. Understanding the intricate effects of binders on the Li+ transport at the cathode/electrolyte interface in LIBs remains a challenge. This study utilized molecular dynamics simulations to compare the molecular effects of conventional polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), Li+-coordinating polyethylene oxide (PEO), and negatively charged polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) binders on local Li+ mobility at the electrolyte/LiFePO4 (LFP) cathode interface. By examining concentration profiles of Li+, three different polymer binders, and anions near Li+-rich LFP and Li+-depleted FePO4 (FP) surfaces, we found a superior performance of the negatively charged PSS on enhancing Li+ distribution near the Li+-depleted FP surface. The radial distribution function and coordination number analyses revealed the potent interactions of PEO and PSS with Li+ disrupting Li+ coordination with electrolyte solvents. Our simulations also revealed the effects of non-uniform binder dispersions on the Li+ local mobility near the cathode surface. The combined results provide a comparative insight into Li+ transport at the electrolyte/cathode interface influenced by distinct binder chemistries, offering a profound understanding of the binder designs for high-performance LIBs.

Abstract:Polymer binders have been shown to efficiently conquer the notorious lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttle effects in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries for years, but more study is needed. Herein, a water dispersible and molecular interaction regulated polymer binder (PNAVS) for Li-S batteries was elaborately designed by co-polymerizing N-acryloyl glycinamide and 3-(1-vinyl-3-imidazolio)propanesulfonate. We demonstrate that by modulating the multiple interactions between the functional groups through copolymerization the binder was able to coordinate the LiPSs with higher binding energy for shuttle effect alleviation and cycling performance improvement. In addition, the Li+ diffusion coefficient is also optimized in the PNAVS binder, which facilitates acceleration of the redox kinetics during cycling. Consequently, the PNAVS binder renders the Li-S battery with an ultrastable open circuit voltage for more than 3000 h. Even with a high sulfur loading of 11.7 mg cm-2, the battery can still exhibit excellent areal capacity of 12.21 mA h cm-2. As proof of concept, a pouch cell was also demonstrated with the stable cycling performance for 110 cycles. The binder engineering strategy in this work will propel the practical applications of high-performance batteries.

Abstract:A completely new role of binder influencing lithium‐ion (Li+) (de‐)solvation process is discovered, which can affect the electrode performance significantly. It is found that the binder functional group can serve as a probe to show the dynamic Li+ (de‐)solvation process. This study complements the understanding of the effect of binder chemistry on interfacial Li+ (de‐)solvation. Binder plays a pivotal role in the development of lithium‐ion batteries as it must be used to adhere electrode materials on current collectors tightly to guarantee stability. Then, many binder molecules have been designed to enhance the adhesion capability, and conductivity, and/or form a robust solid electrolyte interphase layer for better performance. However, the binder effect on the lithium‐ion (i.e., Li+) de‐solvation on the electrode surface has never been reported before. Herein, it is reported that the binder can influence the Li+ (de‐)solvation process significantly, where its functional group can serve as a probe to detect the dynamic Li+ (de‐)solvation process. It is discovered that different binder functional groups (e.g., *─COO− versus *─F) can affect the Li+‐solvent arrangement on the electrode surface, leading to different degrees of side‐reactions, rate capabilities, and/or the tolerance against Li+‐solvent co‐insertion for the graphite anode, such as in the propylene carbonate‐based electrolyte. A molecular interfacial model related to the electrolyte component's behaviors and binder functional group is proposed to interpret the varied electrode performance. This discovery opens a new avenue for studying the interactions between the binder and electrolyte solvation structure, in turn helping to understand electrode performances underlying the micro‐structures.

Abstract:Sulfur species dissolution, precipitation and phase transformation during the charge and discharge process strongly affect the performance of lithium sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Interface properties between electrode and electrolyte play an important role in these batteries. In this work, four kinds of binders with different functionalities, which differs both in chemical and electrical properties, are employed to study how the interface properties affect the battery reaction mechanism. The phase transformation of sulfur species is studied in detail. Remarkable differences are observed among sulfur cathodes with different binders. More solid-phase sulfur species precipitation is observed with binders that have carbonyl functional groups, like poly(9, 9-dioctylfluorene-co-fluorenone-co-methylbenzoic ester) (PFM) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), in both fully charged and discharged states. Also, the improved conductivity from introducing conductive binders greatly promotes sulfur species precipitation. These findings suggest that the contributions from functional groups affinity and binder conductivity lead to more sulfur transformation into the solid phase, so the shuttle effect can be greatly reduced, and a better cell performance can be obtained.
Review on the Binders for Sustainable High‐Energy‐Density Lithium Ion Batteries: Status, Solutions, and Prospects

Abstract:The advances of binders have a promising role in establishing a sustainable high‐energy‐density battery economy, not only because of well‐known contributions to bonding high‐capacity electroactive materials and maintaining electrode integrity for high energy density, but also because of its potential in easily detaching electrode slurry from current collector for cost‐effective recycling of electroactive materials. The upsurging demand for electric vehicles and the rapid consumption of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) calls for LIBs to possess high energy density and resource sustainability. The former requires the usage of electroactive materials with high capacity and the maximum amount within the fixed electrode volume. The latter essentially creates a closed‐loop circulation scenario for electroactive materials. In all aspects, binders are of practical significance in bonding electroactive materials, maintaining electrode integrity and detaching electrode slurry from the current collector. Currently, the key role of binders in enhancing the electrochemical behavior of sustainable high‐capacity electroactive materials has been recognized. Meanwhile, binders that are designed for easy and cost‐effective recycling of electroactive materials are gradually reported. Herein, recently developed binders that hold promises in establishing sustainable high‐energy‐density LIBs are summarized. The role of binder in facilitating easy separation of electroactive materials are first highlighted. Subsequently, special attention is paid to conductive binders, contributing to less battery chemistries and higher energy density of electrode. Additionally, progress of emerging binders in high‐capacity electroactive materials are also reviewed. It is believed that the advances in binders will open up opportunities for establishing a sustainable high‐energy‐density battery economy.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have been limited by their poor electrochemical performance due to the large volume change and severe shuttle effect during cycling. Binders serve as an essential role in sulfur electrodes and can stabilize the mechanical integrity of the electrode. It also has been demonstrated that designing strong-affinity binders is a feasible and facile method to suppress the shuttle effect. Therefore, in this work a strong-affinity elastic network binder is designed for high-performance Li–S battery coupling with tannic acid (TA) and polyurethane (PU). Firstly, the rich hydrogen bonds between TA and PU result in a mechanically robust network to keep the sulfur electrode from cracking in the cycling process. Secondly, the selected TA with abundant phenolic hydroxyl groups possesses strong adsorption capability toward polysulfides, which can efficiently restrain the shuttle effect. Hence, the cycling stability of Li–S batteries using P1T1 binder is significantly improved, maintaining the capacity of 602.5 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles at the current density of 0.5 C.
