Abstract:A hybrid solar cell model composed of a heterojunction cell and a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell has been proposed and characterized. In the hybrid cell, a thin film of double-walled carbon nanotubes forms a heterojunction with the silicon nanowire (SiNW) array and also functions as the transparent counter electrode of the PEC cell. The cell performance can be readily tuned by controlling the SiNW density. Under AM 1.5G illumination, a power conversion efficiency of 1.29%, higher than those reported for SiNW array-based PEC cells, has been obtained.

Abstract:Upconversion (UC) Er, Yb-YF3 is introduced into dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) through a simple method to investigate the effect of UC particles in photoanode. The utilization of UC phosphor can significantly improve the photocurrent of the cells under both infrared irradiation and sunlight. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and luminescence-mediated energy transfer between UC-YF3 and N719 dye are explored as the main contribution that UC-YF3 made to DSSC. With the multi-efforts of UC-YF3, power conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSSC is improved from 5.18% to 6.22%. Besides, Electron transfer between UC-YF3 and TiO2 is found after sintered at 450 °C, and the PCE value of DSSC is improved further (5.34% → 6.76%). In addition, we explore that UC-YF3 can serve as a scattering material to increase the light absorption capability of the cells and increase the photocurrent of the cells under simulated sunlight irradiation.

Abstract:A pyridine-anchor co-adsorbent N,N'-bis((pyridin-2-yl)methylene)-p-phenyl- lenediimine (named L1) and its derivatives N,N'-bis((6-methoxylpyridin-2-yl)methylene)- p-phenylenediimine (named L2) and N,N'-bis((pyridin-2-y1) (methyl)methylene)-p-phenyl- enediimine (named 13) are synthesized and employed in combination with a ruthenium complex N719 in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The prepared co-adsorbent can overcome the deficiency of N719 absorption in the low wavelength region of visible spectrum, offset competitive visible light absorption of I-3(-), suppress the charge recombination and prolong the electron lifetime. The introduction of methyl or methoxyl substituent also has some effect on the performance of DSSCs. A short circuit current density of 14.60 mA cm(-2), an open circuit voltage of 0.75 V and a fill factor of 0.63 corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 6.92% under AM 1.5G solar irradiation are achieved when L2 is used as co-adsorbent, which is 30% higher than that for DSSCs only sensitized by N719 (5.31%) under the same condition. Solar cell synergistic enhanced photoelectrocatalytic efficiency for birnessite and performance of dye degradation

Abstract:Electrochemical technology offers an alternative solution to many environmental problems because electrons provide a versatile,efficient,cost-effective,and clean reagent.The technology includes electrocatalysis,heterogeneous photocatalysis,photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) process and so on.Birnessite electrodes were synthesized by electrochemical method in this paper.Mineral phase and morphology were studied by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM).UV-Vis absorption spectra demonstrated that the birnessite had a significant absorption of visible light from 300 to 600 nm and a direct band gap of 2.14 eV.Moreover,the flat band potential was 1.15 V and the carrier concentration was 3.3 × 1019 cm-3 as evaluated by Mott-Schottky.The results demonstrate that birnessite is a great n-type visible light excitation semiconducting material.Meanwhile,a cheaper and more efficient solar cell was used to replace the traditional electrochemical devices such as electrochemical workstation,which realized an enhanced photoelectrocatalytic activity of birnessite.Methyl orange degradation rate was 90.2 ％ at 60 min,which was higher than the sum of degradation rate of bimessitephotocatalysis (2.2 ％) and electrocatalysis (33.6 ％).Effective utilization of sunlight was realized and photoelectrocatalytic activity of birnessite was promoted.Moreover,energy was saved and the degradation efficiency was increased.Cyclic degradation showed that decrease degree of the fourth round degradation rate (86.8％) was lower than 5％,compared with the first round (90.3％),and this shows that it has a stability of long term operating.The results obtained by the authors provide a more energy saving,advantageous,and environmentally friendly technique for organic wastewater treatment in the field of environmental mineralogy.

Abstract:2,6-bis[1-(2,4,6-trimethyl-phenylimino)ethyl]pyridine (M3) is prepared and employed as a co-sensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on nanostructured TiO2 electrodes. The prepared co-sensitizer could alleviate the aggregation of ruthenium dye N719 on the nanostructured TiO2 film, enhance the spectral responses of the co-sensitized TiO2 film in region from 400 to 750 nm, suppress the electron recombination, prolong the electron lifetime and decrease the total resistance of DSSCs. The optimized cell device co-sensitized by M3/N719 dye gives a short circuit current density of 17.31 mA cm(-2), an open circuit voltage of 0.70 V and a fill factor of 0.61 corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 7.30% under standard global AM 1.5 solar irradiation, which is 34% higher than that of device solely sensitized by N719 (5.43%) under the same conditions. The improved overall conversion efficiency is ascribed to the enhancement of photocurrent.

Silicon Nanocrystal Conjugated Polymer Hybrid Solar Cells with Improved Performance

Abstract:Hybrid inorganic/organic solar cells based on silicon nanocrystals (NCs) and conjugated polymers are optimized through tuning the surface termination of Si NCs and selecting a narrow bandgap conjugated polymer. Here freestanding Si NCs are blended with either P3HT or PTB7 in a solution phase. The resulting mixture is spin-cast to form a bulk hetrojunction structure, on which a hybrid solar cell is fabricated. It is found that by altering the surface termination of Si NCs from predominately chlorine termination to hydrogen termination the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of a hybrid solar cell is significantly improved. PTB7-based solar cells efficiently respond to a wider spectrum of sunlight than P3HT-based ones. This is due to the lower bandgap of PTB7 compared to P3HT (~1.8eV vs. ~2.0eV). Finally, PCE up to 2.2% has been achieved in solar cell fabricated by using hydrogen-terminated Si NCs and PTB7.

Abstract:Inorganic/organic ternary hybrid structures are emerging as promising candidates for the fabrication of novel solar cells. As one of the most important inorganic solar cell material, silicon (Si) is worth careful exploration during the preparation of the hybrid structures. Here we incorporate the nanoscale form of Si, Si nanocrystals (NCs), into the classical bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells based on poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). It is found that the solar cell efficiency may increase by ~ 40% when ~ 5% of PCBM in the original P3HT:PCBM blend is replaced with Si NCs. The efficiency enhancement is enabled by the improved short-wavelength absorption, optimized film structure and cascade energy-level alignment.
Color-tunable Multilayered Laminated Luminescent Solar Concentrators Based on Colloidal Quantum Dots

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSC) are a promising technology for building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Besides obtaining satisfactory efficiencies and aesthetic appeal, a simple and low-cost fabrication process is required to deploy large-scale LSCs. Herein, we introduced a facile and cost-effective fabrication method to obtain laminated LSC (L-LSC) devices. By optimizing the fabrication parameters, L-LSC based on polymer substrates exhibited higher efficiency (power conversion efficiency, PCE=0.24%, external photon efficiency, ηext=4.14% and optical efficiency, ηopt=3.46%) compared to glass-based L-LSC (PCE=0.09%, ηext=1.59%, ηopt=1.76%) due to their excellent optical properties and good compatibility with the laminated emissive layer. Using the optimized L-LSC device, a color-tunable multilayered L-LSC structure is then proposed. By embedding different QDs into two interlayers, the color appearance of the device can be tuned, simultaneously improving the overall efficiency. This study presents a notable advancement towards a practical application of L-LSCs with a satisfactory efficiency and color aesthetics for sustainable BIPVs.
Coloring Solar Cells with Simultaneously High Efficiency by Low-Index Dielectric Nanoparticles

Abstract:Colorful solar cells are highly desired for photovoltaic integration with aesthetically appealing applications such as building facades, self-powered displays and other portable electronic devices. Structural colors by metallic or high-index dielectric nanostructures with judiciously tailored strong resonances are particularly appealing in engineering color appearances of solar cells. However, these prevailing schemes suffering from significant backward scattering power losses for coloration and large intrinsic dissipative losses inevitably degrade solar cell performances, representing a fundamental trade-off between coloring and efficiency improvement. Utilizing a different approach based on all-dielectric low-index submicron-sized spherical nanoparticles, we demonstrate a coloring strategy across the entire visible spectrum with simultaneously improved efficiency. Such nanoparticles exhibit ultra-broadband (300-1200 nm) and highly-directional forward scattering features due to the multipolar interferences. Integrating these nanoparticles atop silicon solar cells with an optical impedance matching layer modulates their optical reflection, leading to an extended complementary color palette with noticeable efficiency increase. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first of its kind that solar cell efficiency can be increased when integrating with nanophotonic structures for coloring. The demonstration of wide coloring and simultaneous light trapping unlocks long-sought strategies to break the color-efficiency trade-off and opens new routes to advanced optoelectronic applications with multi-functionalities.
Semitransparent Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell with 11% Efficiency and Photothermal Stability

Abstract:Overcoming the excited-state quenching and interfacial charge recombination is of far-reaching significance for achieving dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with high efficiency and durability. Cografting a wide-energy-gap adsorbent with a low-energy-gap photosensitizer on mesoporous titania film is an important tactic to address these issues and simultaneously increases the transparency of DSSC to a certain degree, which is appealing for see-through and colorful building-integrated photovoltaics. We herein report a powerful coadsorbent Y1, which is grafted along with the middle-energy-gap organic dye C268 on titania film for see-through DSSCs with a recorded efficiency of 11% under the AM1.5G conditions. The cografting-induced increase in efficiency benefits from the improved yields of electron injection and hole injection, as well as the slower interfacial charge recombination kinetics. More importantly, the cell is endowed with an excellent efficiency retention rate of 90% after 1000 h of full sunlight soaking at 60 degrees C.
In Silico Optimization of Charge Separating Dyes for Solar Energy Conversion

Abstract:Dye‐Sensitized Photoelectrochemical Cells are promising devices in solar energy conversion. However, several limitations still have to be addressed, such as the major loss pathway through charge recombination at the dye‐semiconductor interface. Charge separating dyes constructed as push‐pull systems can increase the spatial separation of electron and hole, decreasing the recombination rate. Here, we in silico investigate a family of dyes, consisting of polyphenylamine donors, fluorene bridges and perylene monoimide acceptors using a combination of semi‐empirical nuclear dynamics and a quantum propagation of photoexcited electron and hole. To optimize the charge separation, several molecular design strategies are investigated, including modifying the donor molecule, increasing the π‐bridge length and decoupling the molecular components through steric effects. It is found that the combination of a triphenylamine donor, using an extended 2‐fluorene π‐bridge and decoupling the different components by steric hindrance from side groups results in a dye with significantly improved charge separation properties in comparison to the original supramolecular complex.

Abstract:Designing cost-effective counter electrode (CE) catalysts with advanced nanostructures and exploring their application in different dye-electrolyte systems is crucial for the development of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In this work, two types of 3D network bio-based porous carbon (3D-BPC) loaded 0D niobium-based bimetallic oxide nanohybrids (CoNb2O6/3D-BPC and NiNb2O6/3D-BPC) were synthesized using a hierarchical strategy. Benefiting from the optimization of the electron transport pathways and enrichment of catalytically active sites via the hierarchical 0D/3D structure, formed by 3D-BPC and MNb2O6 (M = Co, Ni), the catalytic reduction ability of MNb2O6/3D-BPC was significantly enhanced. To explore the photovoltaic performance of the MNb2O6/3D-BPC based DSSC, the I3 −/I− electrolyte and N719 dye system and the Cu2+/Cu+ electrolyte and Y123 dye system were simultaneously employed. The solar cells assembled with the CoNb2O6/3D-BPC and NiNb2O6/3D-BPC CE exhibited device efficiencies of 7.03% and 7.14% in the N719-I3 −/I− system, respectively, and 1.84% and 2.42% in the Y123-Cu2+/Cu+ system, respectively, which were almost equal to those of Pt under the same system. Additionally, MNb2O6/3D-BPC catalysts exhibited promising stability in I3 −/I− electrolyte. This work provides guidance for the construction of low-cost and high-efficiency nanohybrid catalysts for new energy conversion devices.

Abstract:There is currently a high demand for energy production worldwide, mainly producing renewable and sustainable energy. Bio-sensitized solar cells (BSCs) are an excellent option in this field due to their optical and photoelectrical properties developed in recent years. One of the biosensitizers that shows promise in simplicity, stability and quantum efficiency is bacteriorhodopsin (bR), a photoactive, retinal-containing membrane protein. In the present work, we have utilized a mutant of bR, D96N, in a photoanode-sensitized TiO2 solar cell, integrating low-cost, carbon-based components, including a cathode composed of PEDOT (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) functionalized with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) and a hydroquinone/benzoquinone (HQ/BQ) redox electrolyte. The photoanode and cathode were characterized morphologically and chemically (SEM, TEM, and Raman). The electrochemical performance of the bR-BSCs was investigated using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), open circuit potential decay (VOC), and impedance spectroscopic analysis (EIS). The champion device yielded a current density (JSC) of 1.0 mA/cm2, VOC of -669 mV, a fill factor of ~24 %, and a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 0.16 %. This bR device is one of the first bio-based solar cells utilizing carbon-based alternatives for the photoanode, cathode, and electrolyte. This may decrease the cost and significantly improve the device's sustainability.
Photonic Design and Electrical Evaluation of Dual-Functional Solar Cells for Energy Conversion and Display Applications

Abstract:Colored solar cells (SCs) are highly useful for applications in esthetic building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs). However, the theoretical designs mostly focus on the color quality with rarely addressing the optoelectronic responses. Here, considering both color display and complete electrical evaluation, we report a color-controlled a-Si:H SC in purely planar configuration, which simultaneously exhibits the desired high-purity color and sustains a relatively high power conversion efficiency. The high-performance color display is realized by thin-film photonic designs with incorporating distributed Bragg reflector and anti-reflection coating layers. Moreover, a comprehensive optoelectronic simulation addressing both the electromagnetic and internal semiconductor physics has been realized, which shows that the power conversion efficiencies of the designed red-green-blue (RGB) SCs can be 4.88%, 5.58%, and 6.54%, respectively. The physical principles of optimizing the colorful SCs with the tunable hue, high saturation, and brightness are explained, and we take the logo of "Soochow University" as an example to demonstrate the wide-angle pattern display by the SCs. The study paves the way of realizing the colored SCs targeting esthetic BIPV applications.
A Polymer/Carbon‐Nanotube Ink as a Boron‐Dopant/Inorganic‐Passivation Free Carrier Selective Contact for Silicon Solar Cells with over 21% Efficiency

Abstract:Traditional silicon solar cells extract holes and achieve interface passivation with the use of a boron dopant and dielectric thin films such as silicon oxide or hydrogenated amorphous silicon. Without these two key components, few technologies have realized power conversion efficiencies above 20%. Here, a carbon nanotube ink is spin coated directly onto a silicon wafer to serve simultaneously as a hole extraction layer, but also to passivate interfacial defects. This enables a low‐cost fabrication process that is absent of vacuum equipment and high‐temperatures. Power conversion efficiencies of 21.4% on an device area of 4.8 cm2 and 20% on an industrial size (245.71 cm2) wafer are obtained. Additionally, the high quality of this passivated carrier selective contact affords a fill factor of 82%, which is a record for silicon solar cells with dopant‐free contacts. The combination of low‐dimensional materials with an organic passivation is a new strategy to high performance photovoltaics.

A Stable Quasi-Solid-state Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell with an Amphiphilic Ruthenium Sensitizer and Polymer Gel Electrolyte

Abstract:Dye-sensitized nanocrystalline solar cells (DSC) have received considerable attention as a cost-effective alternative to conventional solar cells. One of the main factors that has hampered widespread practical use of DSC is the poor thermostability encountered so far with these devices. Here we show a DSC with unprecedented stable performance under both thermal stress and soaking with light, matching the durability criteria applied to silicon solar cells for outdoor applications. The cell uses the amphiphilic ruthenium sensitizer cis-RuLL'(SCN)(2) (L = 4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridine, L' = 4,4'-dinonyl-2,2'-bipyridine) in conjunction with a quasi-solid-state polymer gel electrolyte, reaching an efficiency of >6% in full sunlight (air mass 1.5, 100 mW cm(-2)). A convenient and versatile new route is reported for the synthesis of the heteroleptic ruthenium complex, which plays a key role in achieving the high-temperature stability. Ultramicroelectrode voltammetric measurements show that the triiodide/iodide couple can perform charge transport freely in the polymer gel. The cell sustained heating for 1,000 h at 80 degrees C, maintaining 94% of its initial performance. The device also showed excellent stability under light soaking at 55 degrees C for 1,000 h in a solar simulator (100 mW cm(-2)) equipped with a ultraviolet filter. The present findings should foster widespread practical application of dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid solar cells based on n-type crystalline silicon and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) exhibited promising efficiency along with a low-cost fabrication process. In this work, ultrathin flexible silicon substrates, with a thickness as low as tens of micrometers, were employed to fabricate hybrid solar cells to reduce the use of silicon materials. To improve the light-trapping ability, nanostructures were built on the thin silicon substrates by a metal-assisted chemical etching method (MACE). However, nanostructured silicon resulted in a large amount of surface-defect states, causing detrimental charge recombination. Here, the surface was smoothed by solution-processed chemical treatment to reduce the surface/volume ratio of nanostructured silicon. Surface-charge recombination was dramatically suppressed after surface modification with a chemical, associated with improved minority charge-carrier lifetime. As a result, a power conversion efficiency of 9.1% was achieved in the flexible hybrid silicon solar cells, with a substrate thickness as low as ∼14 μm, indicating that interface engineering was essential to improve the hybrid junction quality and photovoltaic characteristics of the hybrid devices.
