Abstract:Here we report the fully abundant rare earth-based nanocrystalline multi-component (Ce,La,Y)17Fe,sub>78B6 alloys containing no critical Nd/Pr/Dy/Tb with good combinations of room-temperature magnetic properties and thermal stability. The roles of La and Y substitutions for Ce have been fully understood. The enhanced coercivity Hcj by partial substitution of La is attributed to the increases of anisotropy field HA and the formation of continuously distributed grain boundaries resulting from the suppression of CeFe2 phase. Although Y substitution is not benefit for Hcj, the thermal stability has been effectively improved since Y2Fe14B shows weak temperature dependence of HA.

Abstract:Polycrystalline alloys of (Pr0.5Nd0.5)1−xCexFe1.93 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) are arc melted and investigated for structural, magnetic, and magnetoelastic properties. The light rare earth Ce presents a mixed-valence behavior and helps form a single C15 Laves phase for the composition of x ≥ 0.40. Both the lattice parameter a and the saturation magnetization MS of the Laves phase decrease with increasing Ce content, and the dependence of a on the Ce concentration deviates the linear Vegard law. The easy direction of magnetization (EMD) at room temperature is detected toward <111> axis by performing X-ray diffraction on magnetic-field–aligned powders. The Ce introduction into (Pr,Nd)Fe2 system can reduce the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, resulting in an enhancement of the magnetostriction at low magnetic fields. The good magnetoelastic properties, that is, a low anisotropy and a high low-field anisotropic magnetostriction λa ~ 165 ppm at 1 kOe, can be obtained for the free-heavy rare earth (Pr0.5Nd0.5)0.6Ce0.4Fe1.93 alloy, and may make it a promising candidate for applications.

Abstract:The influence of Ce-Co alloy addition and sintering holding time on permanent magnetic properties and microstructure of nanocrystalline Nd-Fe-B bulk alloy were investigated. The coercivity of Nd-Fe-B bulk alloy can be enhanced greatly by more than 100% after adding Ce-Co powders. However, when the concentration of Ce-Co is up to 30 wt%, the density of the magnet can reach the maximum value of 7.58 g/cm(3), but the coercivity does not increase significantly. On the other hand, with the increase of holding time to 10 min, the density and coercivity of magnets increase gradually, reaching up to 7.55 g/ cm(3) and 1134.3 kA/m, respectively. After the addition of Ce-Co alloy, Ce-Co may easily diffuse into the Nd-Fe-B matrix during hot-pressing and under the high pressure and temperature, thus increasing the content of grain boundary phase and the pinning effect of grain boundary, which leads to the increase of coercivity. The extension of the hot-pressing holding time may be more conducive to the diffusion of CeCo into the Nd-Fe-B matrix. In addition, the effect of Ce-Co addition on the magnetic properties of Nd-FeB with different content of rare earth was also studied. The addition of Ce-Co can effectively increase the coercivity of nanocomposite Nd2Fe14B/alpha-Fe magnets. The addition of Nb to the parent alloy can further improve the coercivity. For Nd11Fe81.5Nb1Ga0.5B6 alloy with 10 wt% Ce-Co addition, the coercivity can increase from 740.28 to 1098.48 kA/m. (C) 2020 Chinese Society of Rare Earths. Published by Elsevier B.V. Effects of Nd and Co on thermal stability of nanocomposite Nd2Fe14B/a-Fe magnets

Abstract:To improve the thermal stability of nanocomposite Nd2Fe14B/α-Fe magnets,the effects of Nd and Co atom fraction on thermal stability of nanocomposite two-phase magnets were investigated.Based on the addition of Zr,vibration sample magnetometer(VSM) and XRD analyse were adopted,and magnetic properties and thermal stabilities of NdxFe93-xB6Zr1(x=9,9.5,10,10.5,11) and Nd10Fe83-xB6CoxZr1(x=2,4,6,8) magnets were studied.Results show that the alloy with 10% Nd atom fraction has the highest remanence of 0.932 T,higher coercivity of 780 kA/m and the best thermal stability in NdxFe93-xB6Zr1 alloys,and that temperature coefficient of remanence is-0.154%/℃ and temperature coefficient of coercivity is-0.39%/℃ at 180 ℃.For the Nd10Fe83-xB6CoxZr1 magnets,the absolute value of remanence temperature coefficient decreases with the increasing Co atom fraction.When Co atom fraction is 4%,the alloy has the best thermal stability with remanence temperature coefficient of-0.100%/℃ and coercivity temperature coefficient of-0.40%/℃ at 180 ℃.

Abstract:A series of alloys Ce2-xDyxFe17 over a composition range (x = 0.0, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0) were prepared from high-purity Ce, Dy and Fe by are melting under purified argon atmosphere on a water-cooled copper crucible, then annealed in vacuum at 900 K for 30 h. The X-ray diffraction pattern indicated that these alloys were single phase of Th2Ni17 type. Magnetization isotherms of these alloys were measured at temperatures between 77 and 300 K under a magnetic field up to 1.4 T, using vibrating sample magnetometer. We found that magnetic entropy change of Ce2-xDyxFe17 (x = 0.0, 0.3, 0.5) were 1.67, 1.41 and 1.18 J/kgK, for x = 0.0, 0.3 and 0.5 respectively.

Abstract:Ce2Fe14B compound has a great potential to serve as a novel permanent magnet alternative thanks to the abundant and inexpensive rare-earth element (cerium), while its low magnetocrystalline anisotropy and energy product severely restrict its applications. In this work, a novel strategy combining melt-spinning and electron-beam exposure (EBE) aiming for fabricating high-performance Ce-Fe-B magnetic materials is reported to solve the above-mentioned problem. Remarkably, this strategy facilitates developing a suitable grain boundary configuration without using any additional heavy rare-earth element. Under the optimal EBE condition, the maximum energy product ((BH)max) of pure Ce-Fe-B alloy is 6.5 MGOe, about four times higher than that obtained after conventional rapid thermal processing method for the same precursor. The enhanced intergranular magnetostatic coupling effect in the EBE sample is validated by mapping the first-order-reversal-curve (FORC) diagrams. The in-situ observation of magnetic domain wall motion for Ce-Fe-B alloy using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy reveals that the boundary layers are very effective in pinning the motion of domain walls, leading to the increased coercivity under EBE, and this pinning effect is further verified by micromagnetic simulations. Our results suggest that CeFeB materials using EBE could be a promising candidate after further processing, which could fill the performance “gap” between hexaferrite and Nd-Fe-B-based magnets.

Abstract:The magnetic properties, microstructure and anti-corrosion properties of Nd-Ce-Fe-B magnets with different Ce contents (0 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt% and 15 wt%) were analyzed. When the Ce increases from 0 wt% to 5 wt% the coercivity decreases from 1053 kA/m to 912 kA/m. But the coercivity almost keeps unchanged when Ce increases from 5 wt% to 10 wt%. When the Ce further increases to 15 wt% the coercivity decreases sharply to 732 kA/m. The distributions of the grain boundary phase are optimized with the increase of Ce due to the formation of CeFe2 phase, which weakens the magnetic coupling between neighboring 2–14-1 phase grains. The “core (low Ce)-shell (high Ce)” structure of the 2–14-1 phase was formed near the Ce-rich grain boundary phases, and the shells enriched with Ce intensify the dilution effect of Ce on the coercivity. The effect of Ce on the coercivities of Nd-Ce-Fe-B magnets can be divided by the positive effect of the grain boundary phase optimization and the negative effect of Ce dilution. The corrosion resistance decreases with the increase of Ce. When the Ce increases above 10 wt% the corrosion resistance degrades sharply. The findings in this work help to design and fabricate Nd-Ce-Fe-B magnets with high performance.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline alloys exhibit great fundamental and technological interests because of their microstructural properties, and their excellent soft magnetic properties. 57Fe Mössbauer spectrometry is a well suitable technique to investigate Fe-based nanocrystalline alloys: its local probe behaviour permits to elucidate the nature of hyperfine interactions at different resonating iron nuclei and to distinguish their immediate atomic surroundings. We review on the recent Mössbauer developments performed on first FeCuMBSi and then FeCuBSi nanocrystalline alloys. From Mössbauer studies, one can estimate the crystalline (i.e., amorphous) fraction, the Si-content in Fe--Si nanocrystalline grains emerging from amorphous alloys of the first series, the temperature dependence of magnetic behaviours of both crystalline and amorphous phases; finally, we present a novel fitting procedure applied to FeCuBSi nanocrystalline alloys which result from bcc-Fe crystalline grains embedded in an amorphous matrix. In this case, the hyperfine structure is able to model the intergranular phase.

Abstract:The effect of Ce substitution on the structural and magnetic properties of (Nd1-δCeδ)2Fe14B (0 < δ < 1) series was systematically studied using neutron diffraction, 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). An anomaly in the lattice parameters was observed in a sample with composition in the range of 0.2 < δ < 0.4, where a phase separation happens and the 2:14:1 isostructural dual-main-phases (IDMPs) appear. Outside this composition range, Ce shows a preferential occupation at the 4g site than the 4f site and a preferable Ce3+ valence state. The average magnetic moments of Nd/Ce and Fe atoms decrease with the increasing of δ. The magnitude of the Fe moments at non-equivalent sites is related to several factors, such as the Fe coordination number, the Wigner-Seitz cell volume, and the Boron atom effect. These results reveal the microscopic mechanisms for the structural and magnetic properties of Ce-substitution Nd2Fe14B, providing perspective on developing the next-generation low-cost and high-performance permanent magnetic materials.

Abstract:The more effective use of readily available Ce in FeNdB sintered magnets is an important step towards more resource-efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective permanent magnets. These magnets have the potential to bridge the gap between high-performance FeNdB and hard ferrite magnets. However, for higher degrees of cerium substitution (>25%), the magnetic properties deteriorate due to the lower intrinsic magnetic properties of Fe14Ce2B and the formation of the Laves phase Fe2Ce in the grain boundaries. In this paper, sintered magnets with the composition Fe70.9-(CexNd1-x)18.8-B5.8-M4.5 (M = Co, Ti, Al, Ga, and Cu; with Ti, Al, Ga, and Cu less than 2.0 at% in total and Cobal; x = 0.5 and 0.75) were fabricated and analyzed. It was possible to obtain coercive fields for higher degrees of Ce substitution, which previous commercially available magnets have only shown for significantly lower degrees of Ce substitution. For x = 0.5, coercivity, remanence, and maximum energy product of μ0Hc = 1.29 T (Hc = 1026 kA/m), Jr = 1.02 T, and (BH)max = 176.5 kJ/m3 were achieved at room temperature for x = 0.75 μ0Hc = 0.72 T (Hc = 573 kA/m), Jr = 0.80 T, and (BH)max = 114.5 kJ/m3, respectively.

Interaction and Magnetic Properties of NdCeFeB Melt-Spun Ribbons

Abstract:The alloy ingots with nominal compositions of (Nd1-xCe2.4Fe14B (x=0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) were prepared by induction melting and then melt-spun to form nanocrystalline ribbons. Phase composition, magnetic properties and microstructure were investigated. XRD results show that all melt-spun ribbons exhibit the tetragonal structure (Nd,Ce)(2)Fe14B phase. When Ce substitution content is more than x=0.6, CeFe2 phase appears and CeFe2 content increases with the increase in Ce substitution content. Remanence, remanence ratio (M-r/M-s) and lattice constant decrease while increasing Ce substitution content. A coercivity of 1.31x10(6) A/m and the maximum energy product of 10(3) kJ/m(3) for (Nd0.8Ce0.2)(2.4)Fe14B melt-spun ribbon are achieved. The coercivity mechanism and intergrain exchange coupling were studied. The positive delta M value was observed in every sample, confirming the existence of exchange coupling interaction. The delta M maximum value reaches 0.76 at the Ce substitution content x=0.2, indicating that the intergranular exchange coupling effect is the strongest, which is consistent with the varying remanence ratio. SEM observation reveals that increasing Ce substitution deteriorates the columnar crystal structure of ribbons.
Growth and Characterization of Ce- Substituted Nd2Fe14B Single Crystals

Abstract:Single crystals of (Nd1-xCex)2Fe14B are grown out of Fe-(Nd,Ce) flux. Chemical and structural analysis of the crystals indicates that (Nd1-xCex)2Fe14B forms a solid solution until at least x = 0.38 with a Vegard-like variation of the lattice constants with x. Refinements of single crystal neutron diffraction data indicate that Ce has a slight site preference (7:3) for the 4g rare earth site over the 4f site. Magnetization measurements show that for x = 0.38 the saturation magnetization at 400 K, a temperature important to applications, falls from 29.8 for the parent Nd2Fe14B to 27.6 (mu)B/f.u., the anisotropy field decreases from 5.5 T to 4.7 T, and the Curie temperature decreases from 586 to 543 K. First principles calculations carried out within density functional theory are used to explain the decrease in magnetic properties due to Ce substitution. Though the presence of the lower-cost and more abundant Ce slightly affects these important magnetic characteristics, this decrease is not large enough to affect a multitude of applications. Ce-substituted Nd2Fe14B is therefore a potential high-performance permanent magnet material with substantially reduced Nd content.

Abstract:In this work, we proposed a method to enhance the magnetic properties of (Nd, Ce)–Fe–B magnets with Ce/TRE ratios below 25 wt% by introducing a moderate amount of La elements. The segregation behavior of La elements towards grain boundaries (GBs) was utilized to optimize the GB phase structure. Incorporation of La atoms into the main phase induces lattice expansion, leading to an increased formation of Ce3+ ions with enhanced magnetic moments. Comparative analysis with the original magnet (La/Ce = 0 wt%) demonstrates that the magnet with a La/Ce ratio of 10 wt% exhibits improvements of 0.3% in remanence, 12.6% in coercivity, and 0.6% in maximum energy product. These results underscore that the moderate addition of La elements enhances the fluidity of the rare earth-rich phase and optimizes the distribution of lamellar GB, consequently reinforcing the magnetic isolation effect. Furthermore, the promotion of the transformation from Ce4+ to Ce3+ ions contributes to the comprehensive enhancement of the magnetic properties. This research offers a novel strategy for fabricating high-performance and resource-efficient sintered magnets based on LaCe alloys.

Abstract:The low magnetic properties of Ce-based magnets limit their application. In this paper, we aim to improve the coercivity, remanence and maximum energy product of hot-deformed CeFeB magnets by adding low melting Nd70Cu30 alloy. It is found that the addition of Nd70Cu30 remarkably improve the thermal stability and magnetic properties of Ce–Fe–B-based hot-deformed magnets. It is shown by analyzing the microstructure that the proportion of the coarse grain region decreases and the proportion of the liquid region increases in the magnet after adding Nd70Cu30 alloy. The former reduces the nucleation sites of magnetization reversal and the latter weakens the intergranular exchange coupling. Furthermore, the typical core-shell structure was found to be formed in magnets. TEM observation demonstrated that Nd, Ce and Cu were enriched at grain boundaries. Two Curie temperatures were obtained due to different types of 2:14:1 phase, i.e. the incipient CeFeB phase and the newly formed (Nd, Ce)2Fe14B hard magnetic phase. Because of the combined effect of (Nd, Ce)2Fe14B phase and intercrystalline phase, the comprehensive magnetic properties of hot-deformed Ce–Fe–B-based magnets with Nd70Cu30 addition are greatly improved.

Abstract:The substitution for Nd by abundant element cerium (Ce) is a practical way for the comprehensive utilization of rare earth resources in NdFeB permanent magnets. In this letter, we have prepared the Ce-doped NdFeB ribbons and conventional NdFeB ribbons by melt quenching method and investigated the effects of heat treatment on the crystallization behavior, microstructure, and magnetic properties of the alloy. The results show that: (1) The crystallization behavior and the microstructural changes of the (Nd,Ce)FeB magnets are similar to the conventional NdFeB magnet when heat treatment. In addition, the Ce2Fe14B phase has a significant effect on the properties of the whole magnets. (2)The NdFeB phase and CeFeB phase are relatively close to each other after being precipitated from the amorphous phase. The coupling effect between the two phases is strong enough to weaken the effect of the addition of Ce and making the properties of the NdFeB magnets to not reduce too much after adding Ce.

Abstract:Research on the application of the most abundant rare-earth elements for permanent magnetic materials has gained intense interest. However, the magnetic properties decrease dramatically with the increase of Ce content due to the traditional Ce substitute for Nd. A double main phase alloy method has been performed to adjust the composition and combination of main phases in the magnets and make a partial main phase without Ce, which can maintain higher remanence. The influence of Ce content on the rectangularity of demagnetization curves and magnetic properties of (Nd1-xCex)(30)(Fe,TM)(bal) B-1 sintered by the double main phase alloy method has been investigated. When the Ce content was 30% of the total amounts of all the rare earth metals, the maximum energy product of the sintered magnet, was still over 43 MGOe.

Abstract:Herein, we investigated the effects of Ce on the corrosion behavior of NdFeB magnets in 3.5% NaCl solutions using electrochemical tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, and scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM). We demonstrated that Ce markedly enhances the corrosion resistance of NdFeB magnets. Ce primarily replaces Nd in the Nd-rich phase instead of matrix phase, increasing the surface potential of the Nd-rich phase. An increase in the Ce content from 0 to 5.21 wt%, decreased the potential difference between the main phase and (Nd, Ce)-rich phase from 350.2 mV to 97.7 mV; therefore, the corrosion resistance of the magnetic materials increased. The corrosion resistance constituted the Nd-rich phase < the void < metal matrix. Moreover, based on the results of the study, we discussed the impact mechanism of additions of Ce on the corrosion resistance of the magnets.

Abstract:Ce substitution of Nd in FeNdB sintered magnets is very interesting for reasons of resource efficiency, sustainability and costs. However, the magnetic properties of high Ce‐content magnets are poor. This is mainly due to the lower values of intrinsic magnetic properties of Fe14Ce2B compared to Fe14Nd2B as well as the Laves phase Fe2Ce, which is formed in the grain boundaries and forms flat aggregates for higher Ce‐content. In this paper, sintered magnets with 75 at% degree of substitution of the composition Fe70.9‐[(Ce1‐xLax)0.75Nd0.25]18.8‐B5.8‐M4.5 (M = Co, Ti, Al, Ga, Cu, 0 ≤ × ≤ 0.3) are produced and analyzed. It is shown that a new rare earth rich grain boundary phase is formed adding La and that the Laves phase fraction can be reduced by up to 85%. With increasing La content, the remanence and Curie temperature increase and the temperature coefficient of Hc improves. A coercivity, remanence and maximum energy density of up to μ0Hc = 0.74 T, Jr = 0.98 T and (BH)max = 139.9 kJ/m3 have been achieved. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Formation and magnetic enhancement mechanism of sandwich-structure grain boundary phase in Ce magnets

Abstract:In this study, the formation mechanism of sandwich-structure grain boundary phase in sintered Ce magnets with various Pr-Nd-Al alloy additions is investigated in detail. The sandwich-structure grain boundary between the main phases is composed of RE6(Fe, TM)11Al3 phase at the center and symmetrical Nd-rich phase at both sides. Based on the analysis of phase diagrams, the formation mechanism is revealed from the following aspects: i) The amorphous formation ability of Nd-rich liquid phase in Ce magnet during sintering can be enhanced by introducing Pr-Nd-Al alloy; ii) The RE6(Fe, TM)11Al3 phase preferentially nucleates and grows during the process of cooling; iii) The interfacial tension among Nd-rich liquid phase, main phase and RE6(Fe, TM)11Al3 phase contributes to the formation of the sandwich-structure grain boundary. With the addition of Pr-Nd-Al alloy, the activity of Al entering the main phase is inhibited, resulting in almost no reduction of remanence and Curie temperature. The structural stability and decoupling effect of the sandwich-structure grain boundary phase are more conducive to the improvement of the coercivity and thermal stability of the Ce magnets. The coercivity of Ce magnet changes from 12.7 to 14.93 kOe (the increase extent is 17.6%). In the temperature range 20–100 ℃, the coercivity temperature coefficient varies from -0.767 to -0.680 %/℃ and the temperature stability obviously ameliorates about 11.3%.

Abstract:This study investigates the effect of Ce on the diffusion behavior of Dy-Cu alloys. The addition of Ce reduces the diffusion source melting point and promotes the formation of low-melting alloy phases, benefiting the diffusion behavior. The diffusion source with 10 wt.% of Ce shows the best magnetic performance, the coercivity of the magnet increases from 18.47 kOe to 23.60 kOe, and the incremental coercivity reaches 5.13 kOe. Ce diffusion improves the utilization of Dy, enhances diffusion uniformity, and promotes coercivity improvement. Ce also optimizes and regulates grain boundary phase structure distribution, consistent with magnetic property changes. Dy70Cu30 with an excessive thick shell layer wastes Dy and reduces utilization, while Dy60Ce10Cu30 has a relatively thin and uniform shell layer. Ce mainly distributes in the intergranular phase region, promoting Dy diffusion from the intergranular phase to form a shell layer. Excessive Ce can distort the magnet's crystal structure, hindering magnetic property improvement. This study provides insights into optimizing the diffusion process and improving the Dy-Cu alloy.
