Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), an element-detection technology with the advantages of no sample preparation and in situ detection of metal samples, is suitable for the quantitative analysis of metal samples. However, severe spectral interference in the detection of metal samples makes the quantitative analysis difficult. Three quantitative analysis methods, including single-variable calibration, partial least squares regression (PLSR), and support vector regression (SVR), are used to conduct the quantitative analysis of four common metal elements (Manganese (Mn), Chromium (Cr), Vanadium (V), and Titanium (Ti)). The PLSR model adds interference spectrum lines to the model for linear modeling, while the SVR model adds interference spectrum lines to the model for nonlinear modeling. The quantitative analysis results of the nonlinear SVR model are the best. The R square (R2) values of Mn, Cr, V, and Ti are 0.993, 0.995, 0.990, and 0.992, respectively. The root-mean-squared errors of the prediction set of Mn, Cr, V, and Ti are 0.044, 0.045, 0.011, and 0.014, respectively. Therefore, the results of PLSR and SVR are better than the calibration curves of the spectral intensity and concentration due to the influence of multivariate factors. SVR has almost no element bias, while PLSR and the single-variable calibration model have different quantitative results due to the different degrees of influence on spectral lines. These results demonstrate that the combined influence of the spectral interference, background noise, and self-absorption can be suppressed by the nonlinear quantitative analysis model in the steel field using LIBS.
Portable Fiber-Optic Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy System for the Quantitative Analysis of Minor Elements in Steel

Abstract:In this paper, we developed a portable laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) using an optical fiber to deliver laser energy and used it to quantitatively analyze minor elements in steel. The R-2 factors of calibration curves of elements Mn, Ti, V, and Cr in pig iron were 0.9965, 0.9983, 0.9963, and 0.991, respectively, and their root mean square errors of cross-validation were 0.0501, 0.0054, 0.0205, and 0.0245 wt%, respectively. Six test samples were used for the validation of the performance of the calibration curves established by the portable LIBS. The average relative errors of elements Mn, Ti, V, and Cr were 2.5%, 11.7%, 13.0%, and 5.6%, respectively. These results were comparable with most results reported in traditional LIBS in steel or other matrices. However, the portable LIBS is flexible, compact, and robust, providing a promising prospect in industrial application.

Abstract:Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) instruments are increasingly recognized as valuable tools for detecting trace metal elements due to their simplicity, rapid detection, and ability to perform simultaneous multi-element analysis. Traditional LIBS modeling often relies on empirical or machine learning-based feature band selection to establish quantitative models. In this study, we introduce a novel approach-simultaneous multi-element quantitative analysis based on the entire spectrum, which enhances model establishment efficiency and leverages the advantages of LIBS. By logarithmically processing the spectra and quantifying the cognitive uncertainty of the model, we achieved remarkable predictive performance (R2) for trace elements Mn, Mo, Cr, and Cu (0.9876, 0.9879, 0.9891, and 0.9841, respectively) in stainless steel. Our multi-element model shares features and parameters during the learning process, effectively mitigating the impact of matrix effects and self-absorption. Additionally, we introduce a cognitive error term to quantify the cognitive uncertainty of the model. The results suggest that our approach has significant potential in the quantitative analysis of trace elements, providing a reliable data processing method for efficient and accurate multi-task analysis in LIBS. This methodology holds promising applications in the field of LIBS quantitative analysis.

Abstract:This contribution presents the applications of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis of several samples such as geological ores, cement, and industrial materials. A combination of LIBS with the laser ablation time‒of‒flight mass spectrometer (LA-TOF-MS) assists in elemental quantification and isotopic abundance analysis. Different elemental components such as aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), potassium (K), lithium (Li), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), rubidium (Rb), silicon (Si), strontium (Sr), and titanium (Ti) in cement varieties, as well as rare earth metals, lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), and neodymium (Nd) in geological ore samples, and cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), and molybdenum (Mo) in industrial standard material samples, have been precisely identified and their relative weight percentages estimated using CF-LIBS and LA-TOF-MS diagnostic techniques. To ensure the reliability of LIBS for the elemental analysis of industrial materials, a comparative study with other compatible techniques, including EDX, PIXE, and XRF, utilizing different excitation sources is presented. The results suggest that LIBS offers unique advantages, enabling rapid elemental analysis in circumstances where other techniques may face certain limitations.

Abstract:The existence of the background signal is one of the factors leading to the uncertainty of spectral intensity, which dramatically affects the stability, repeatability, and quantitative accuracy of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) measurements. In this work, the polarization-resolved LIBS (PR-LIBS) and partial least squares (PLS) regression models were proposed to improve the stability and accuracy of qualitative and quantitative analysis of steel alloy elements. The obtained spectra were pre-processed to select an appropriate number of variables, and the relationship between the spectral intensity and the certified concentration information of steel alloy samples was modeled using PLS. Compared to LIBS measurements, the relative standard deviation (RSD) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) of PR-LIBS decreased, while the signal-to-background ratio (SBR) and coefficient of determination (R2) increased. Finally, the quantitative results of LIBS and PR-LIBS of Si, Mn, Cr, and Ni in steel alloy samples using PLS were displayed and discussed. For the PR-LIBS dataset, the R2 has increased by at least 3.4%, and the root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) have improved by at least 6.3% and 19.0%, respectively. These findings coupled with the simplicity of the experimental process indicate that PR-LIBS is a simple and low-cost solution that can increase the stability and accuracy of LIBS measurements.

Abstract:Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy is an emerging elemental analytical technique with the advantage of fast response, minimal sample preparation and multi-element analysis capacities. This work studied practical use of LIBS for rapid quantification of 4 (Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb) heavy metal elements in 169 agricultural soil samples. The objective is to conclude an appropriate method to reduce the interference of matrix effect in soils within the scope of data analysis, by comparing several univariate and multivariate methods of LIBS data interpretation (full spectrum and emission lines). The proposed multivariate methods, such as the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and principal components regression were found to be effective in reducing the matrix interference and the predictive performance was stable in our experiment, approaching normalized root mean squared error of 6.84%, 8.87%, 9,71%, 10.76% for Cu, Ni, Cr and Pb, respectively. Meanwhile, the performance of univariate analysis suffered from such effect. The results showed the importance of utilizing proper multivariate chemometrics for LIBS data interpretation when quantifying the heavy metals in soils.
Standardless Semi-quantitative Elemental Analysis of Steel Using Laser Ablation Time-of-flight Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:A small high irradiance laser ablation and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer with orthogonal sample introduction was described. Nearly uniform relative sensitivity coefficients as well as satisfactory resolving power(similar to 2200) were achieved for most if metal elements. Fairly good signal stability was obtained by automated step moving of the sample stage in short time intervals. Interferences of multiply charged ions and polyatomic ions were nearly eliminated in the spectrum by utilizing helium as the buffer gas in the ion source, which resulted In a relative clean background. Standardless semi-quantitative analysis of steel was realized and the limits of detection are about 10(-6) g/g for most of metal elements.
A Quantitative Analysis Method Assisted by Image Features in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy.

Abstract:The determination accuracy of alloying elements in high alloy steel is generally poor in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) due to their matrix effect. To solve this problem, an image quantitative analysis (IQA) method was proposed and verified by determining nickel (Ni) in 17 stainless steel samples in this work. The results showed that the coefficient of determination (R2) was increased from 0.9833 of a conventional spectrum quantitative analysis (SQA) method to 0.9996 of the IQA method, and the average relative error of cross-validation (ARECV) and root mean squared error of cross-validation (RMSECV) were decreased from 56.80% and 1.0818 wt% to 15.93% and 0.9866 wt%, respectively. Besides, the determinations of chromium (Cr) and silicon (Si) demonstrated the generalization ability of the IQA. This study provides an effective approach to improving the quantitative performance of LIBS through the combination of image processing and computer vision technology.

Abstract:In the field of quantitative analysis utilizing laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), ensuring the stability and precision of the technique is a crucial consideration. This is particularly pertinent for certain engineering applications, where utilizing electric translation stages for sample scanning is not feasible. In this study, a compact optical scanning LIBS analysis system was developed using a deflection mirror design to replace the translation platform. The system achieved rapid scanning and precise analysis, with a total weight of less than 5 kg. Moreover, to quantitatively analyze Mn, Ni, Cr, Cu, and other elements in various alloy steels, a general method for selecting spectral analysis line combination was proposed. The calibration model was established utilizing 16 alloy steel samples, and its validity was assessed through a verification set of seven samples (with element content ranging from 0.021 to 2.0 wt%). The results indicate a high degree of accuracy. The calibration model determination coefficients ( ) for Mn, Ni, Cr, and Cu elements exceeded 0.99. The root-mean-square error of validation (RMSEV) was less than 0.05, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was not more than 4%. Additionally, the relative prediction errors for Mn range from 2.98% to 67.44%, for Ni range from 0.57% to 15.93%, for Cr range from 3.91% to 55.56%, and for Cu range from 0.95% to 38.1%.

Abstract:The properties of a steel are crucially influenced by the contained minor elements, including metals, such as Mn, Cr and Ni. The determination of their concentrations using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) represents a great help in many application scenarios, especially with in situ and online measurement requirements. Such determination can be significantly perturbed by spectral interferences with Fe I and Fe II lines which is particularly dense in the VIS and near UV ranges. Univariate regression can sometimes, lead to calibration models with modest analytical performances. In this work, multivariate calibration models are developed using a machine learning approach. We first show the regression results with univariate models. The development of multivariate models is then briefly presented, in successive steps of data pretreatment, feature selection with SelectKBest algorithm and regression model training with back-propagation neural network (BPNN). The analytical performances obtained with the developed multivariate models are compared with those obtained with the univariate models. We demonstrate in such way, the efficiency of the machine learning approach in the development of multivariate models for calibration and prediction with LIBS spectra acquired from steel samples. In particular, the prediction trueness (relative error of prediction) and precision (relative standard deviation) for the determination of the above mentioned metal elements in steel reach the respective values of 1.13%, 2.85%, 7.20% (for Mn, Cr, Ni) and 6.68%, 3.96%, 6.52% (for Mn, Cr, Ni) with the used experimental condition and measurement protocol.
Selection of Atomic Emission Lines on the Mutual Identification of Austenitic Stainless Steels with a Combination of Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and Partial-least-square Regression (PLSR)

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a promising method for the rapid determination of compositions of stainless steels in steel scrap. LIBS is widely known as a method for very rapid elemental analysis in open-air without any pretreatment. We applied a laboratory-build LIBS system for mutual identification of 5 types of austenitic stainless steels, SUS304, SUS310, SUS316, SUS321, and SUS347. The certified reference materials of JSM M 200 were employed for establishing supervised models, conducting partial-least-square regression (PLSR) for the determination of Cr, Ni, Mo, Ti, and Nb. Since it needed more than 10 minutes of calculation time when all the wavelength range were utilized for PLS2 regression, suitable emission lines in the determination were picked up for the reduction of calculation amount and time. When we select single emission lines having higher excitation levels to avoid an affection by self-absorption, the good determination results for Cr, Ni, Mo, and Nb could be obtained with reasonable accuracy and precision by the calculation with PLS1 regression.

Quantitative Analysis of Alloying Elements in Titanium Alloy by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy(LIBS)

Abstract:Titanium alloy samples were induced by solid state Nd:YAG laser, of which the output wavelength was 1064 nm, echelle spectrograph was used to disperse compound light , intensified charge-coupled device ( ICCD) was used to detect optical signal , and the contents of alloying elements in titanium alloy were determined by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy ( LIBS) .For a better analysis capability of LIBS, the parameters of delay time were optimized and the best delay time was determined as 2μs finally.Under the opti-mized conditions , the calibration curves were made by a series of certified TC 11 titanium alloy samples for five elements , Al, Mo, Zr, Fe, and Si, and the contents of alloying elements in TC 11 sample were quantified .The results indicated that the detection limit of LIBS were 8.98 ×10 -4(Al), 8.43 ×10 -4(Mo), 4.99 ×10 -4(Zr), 1.73 ×10 -4(Fe) and 4.03 ×10 -4(Si), respectively.The contents (mass fraction) of Al, Mo, Zr, Fe and Si were 6.84％, 3.24％, 1.55％, 0.11％, and 0.26％.T-test method was used to compare the results of LIBS with national standard method GB/T 4698.2-4698.3 and to test the accuracy of the method.The t values of Al, Mo, Zr, Fe and Si were 1.37, 1.63, 0.82, 0.61, 1.83 respectively, which were all less than the critical value of 95％confidence probability (t0.05,6 =2.45).The results showed that LIBS was a fast and effective for quantitative analysis of titanium alloy samples.
In-situ Measurement Method of Material Ratio and Chemical Uniformity in Sintering–pelleting Operation Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy and Partial Least Squares Regression

Abstract:The testing cycle, analyzing accuracy and precision of material ratio and chemical uniformity of sinter- ing-pelleting operation directly affect the return fines ratio and economic benefits in the steel industry. In this work, we present an in-situ measurement method, which mainly includes sample preparation, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) measurement and data processing. Twelve mixture samples composed of Fe2O3, CaO and C powder materials with different concentrations were prepared and measured. The raw spectra were pre-processed with baseline, de-noise, peak finding, sum normalized, line matchning, and feature selection. Important variables of Fe, Ca and C elements were acquired and selected based on partial least squares regression coefficients (PLS-RC) and domain knowledge, and the relationship between the spectral intensity and the certified concentration information was modeled using partial least squares regression (PLSR). After data- processing, the relative standard deviation (RSD) values of Fe I (403.05 nm), Ca I (430.77 nm) and C I (247.85 nm) were optimized to be 4.20 %, 5.29 % and 7.64 %, respectively. Moreover, the coefficient of determination (R2) values of Fe, Ca and C are 98.02 %, 98.43 % and 97.18 %, respectively; the root-mean-square error (RMSE) values are 0.024, 0.010, and 0.014, respectively; and the mean absolute error (MAE) values are 0.019, 0.008, and 0.011, respectively. The evaluation demonstrated that the presented LIBS system can basically satisfy the requirement the industry standards for in-situ material ratio and uniformity analysis in sinter- ing-pelleting operation. Therefore, the proposed in-situ LIBS measuring method has great development potential and is widely applied in sintering-pelleting operations and similar processes.

Abstract:Segregation monitoring plays a crucial role in the quality control of steels, and elemental microanalysis using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) can be employed as an approach in this process. In this study, we established a LIBS system utilizing a 9-ps pulsed laser operating at 355 nm and 35 Hz repetition to investigate steel segregation. Successful analysis of Aluminum (Al), Copper (Cu), and Manganese (Mn) segregation in steels was achieved. The LIBS mappings with a spatial resolution of 2 mu m demonstrated agreement with results obtained from Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA), thereby affirming their reliability. Furthermore, by employing an even higher spatial resolution of 1 mu m, fine results could still be acquired through LIBS on a steel area of 100 mu m2. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of ps-LIBS for resolving elemental segregation and suggest its potential as an alternative tool for steel inspection.
Accurate quantitative CF-LIBS analysis of both major and minor elements in alloys via iterative correction of plasma temperature and spectral intensity

Abstract:The chemical composition of alloys directly determines their mechanical behaviors and application fields. Accurate and rapid analysis of both major and minor elements in alloys plays a key role in metallurgy quality control and material classification processes. A quantitative calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS) analysis method, which carries out combined correction of plasma temperature and spectral intensity by using a second-order iterative algorithm and two boundary standard samples, is proposed to realize accurate composition measurements. Experimental results show that, compared to conventional CF-LIBS analysis, the relative errors for major elements Cu and Zn and minor element Pb in the copper-lead alloys has been reduced from 12%, 26% and 32% to 1.8%, 2.7% and 13.4%, respectively. The measurement accuracy for all elements has been improved substantially.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique is widely used to analyze the composition and the concentration of elements in materials,which is based on the atomic excitation and emission spectrum.It has many advantages,such as rapid,multi-element simultaneous detection and without sample pretreatment.In this paper,research progress on the application of metal element detection in such fields as alloy,soil,water,and food is reviewed.It is considered that there are some problems in this technology at present,such as low detection accuracy,poor repeatability,unstable detection signal.It is also found that the research and development of LIBS based metal element detection instrument should be developed towards the direction of conventional,portable and high precision.
Multi-Element Detection in Molten Steel with Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Abstract:On-line element content detection in iron and steel industry is one of the key techniques to ensure the quality in iron and steel metallurgy. Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has been applied to on-line components detection in molten steel. We have built LIBS system for components detection of molten steel in laboratory. The system consists of a Q-switched Nd∶YAG laser (repetition rate 10 Hz, wavelength 1 064 nm, pulse length 10 ns, pulse energy about 120 mJ), high frequency induction furnace (temperature 1 600 ℃), spectrometer (wavelength range 186～310 nm, spectral resolution 0.1 nm), laser focusing and spectral signal collecting system. Multi-elements were detected in molten steel with the application of deep-UV detector coating and solarization resistant fibers. According to the calibration curves of C, S, Mn and Cr, the limit of detections are 169, 15, 58.9 and 210 μg·g-1 respectively. The R-squares of calibration curves of C, S, Mn, and Cr are better than 0.96 by using appropriate analytical lines and reference lines. At the same time, through the comparison of different elements, we find the best calibration curve of different element need different delay conditions.

Abstract:A multi-line internal standard calibration method is proposed for the quantitative analysis of carbon steel using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). A procedure based on the method was adopted to select the best calibration curves and the corresponding emission lines pairs automatically. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy experiments with carbon steel samples were performed, and C, Cr, and Mn were analyzed via the proposed method. Calibration curves of these elements were constructed via a traditional single line internal standard calibration method and a multi-line internal standard calibration method. The calibration curves obtained were evaluated with the determination coefficient, the root mean square error of cross-validation, and the average relative error of cross-validation. All of the parameters were improved significantly with the proposed method. The results show that accurate and stable calibration curves can be obtained efficiently via the multi-line internal standard calibration method.
Improved Analysis of Manganese in Steel Samples Using Collinear Long–Short Double Pulse Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)

Abstract:The long-short double-pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LS-DP-LIBS) method was applied to qualitative and quantitative analyses of underwater steel samples to improve the detection ability of underwater measurement. The stable plasma intensity and discrete emission lines were detected using LS-DP-LIBS when comparing the measured results of single-pulse LIBS (SP-LIBS) and LS-DP-LIBS. The long pulse produces a cavitation bubble without plasma, and the short pulse induces the plasma of steel samples within the bubble. The detection features of LS-DP-LIBS for underwater steel samples were discussed in different intra-pulse delay time, long-pulse width, and delay time conditions when analyzing the measured spectra, the signal intensity of Fe(I) at 400.524 nm and 402.187 nm, Mn(I) at 404.136 nm, and intensity ratio of Mn(I) 404.136 nm/Fe(I) 402.187 nm. The results indicated that the plasma stability and spectral signal intensity were improved significantly with a long-pulse width of 80 mu s in the intra-pulse delay time of 70 mu s, which were appropriate for bubble formation and plasma generation. According to the discussion of the delay time effect, the state of generated plasma was almost stable from 650 ns to 850 ns. Manganese (Mn) contents in steel samples were analyzed quantitatively when measuring five steel samples with different Mn contents using LS-DP-LIBS in optimal experimental conditions. A strong linear dependence was observed with R-2=0.9842, which demonstrated the feasibility and appropriateness of quantitative analysis for underwater measurement using LS-DP-LIBS.

Abstract:As any spectrochemical analysis method, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) usually relates characteristic spectral lines of the elements or molecules to be analyzed to their concentrations in a material. It is however not always possible for a given application scenario, to rely on such lines because of various practical limitations as well as physical perturbations in the spectrum excitation and recording process. This is actually the case for determination of carbon in steel with LIBS operated in the ambient gas, where the intense C I 193.090 nm VUV line is absorbed, while the C I 247.856 nm near UV one heavily interferes with iron lines. This work uses machine learning, especially a combination of least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) for spectral feature selection and back-propagation neural networks (BPNN) for regression, to correlate a LIBS spectrum to the carbon concentration for its precise determination without explicitly including carbon-related emission lines in the selected spectral features.
