Abstract:It is a great challenge in catalysis to increase selectivity without sacrificing activity. Furthermore, the highly selective production of C-5-C-12 hydrocarbons, which are main components of gasoline fuel, from syngas is important for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), particularly for its industrial process. Herein, we demonstrate an approach to increase selectivity for C-5-C-12 hydrocarbons, namely, the 145% increase in selectivity of C-5-C-12 hydrocarbons without sacrificing high CO conversion was obtained by tuning Al2O3 support with tungstophosphoric acid (HPW) for Ru-based catalysts. This finding offers a simple and novel approach to develop efficient catalysts for FTS.

Abstract:Tuning CO 2 hydrogenation product distribution to obtain high-selectivity target products is of great significance. However, due to the imprecise regulation of chain propagation and hydrogenation reactions, the oriented synthesis of a single product is challenging. Herein, we report an approach to controlling multiple sites with graphene fence engineering that enables direct conversion of CO 2 /H 2 mixtures into different types of hydrocarbons. Fe-Co active sites on the graphene fence surface present 50.1% light olefin selectivity, while the spatial Fe-Co nanoparticles separated by graphene fences achieve liquefied petroleum gas of 43.6%. With the assistance of graphene fences, iron carbides and metallic cobalt can efficiently regulate C-C coupling and olefin secondary hydrogenation reactions to achieve product-selective switching between light olefins and liquefied petroleum gas. Furthermore, it also creates a precedent for CO 2 direct hydrogenation to liquefied petroleum gas via a Fischer-Tropsch pathway with the highest space-time yields compared to other reported composite catalysts.

Abstract:Silica network-encapsulated cobalt nanoparticles with an adjustable pore structure as model Fischer–Tropsch synthesis catalysts were successfully prepared. The well-developed shell pore structure of the core–shell catalyst is of great importance for reducing the selectivity of methane, increasing the selectivity of heavy hydrocarbons, and the probability of carbon chain growth. Benefiting from its uniform distribution of cobalt particles and 3D open hierarchical porous shell features, Co@H-mSiO 2 catalysts exhibited excellent stability and activity, achieving up to 61.4% selectivity of C 5 –C 20 hydrocarbon products at 6 SL h −1 g −1 , 220 °C and 1.0 MPa.

Abstract:Adjusting the hydrocarbon product distribution is the focus of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) reaction. A novel FeMn@C core-shell catalyst with bimetallic FeMn nanoparticles encapsulated in a carbon shell was synthesized by a one-step solvothermal method. In the FTS reaction, this catalyst exhibited higher catalytic activity and C-5(+) hydrocarbons (especially for 63.3% C(5-1)2 gasoline range products) selectivity as well as excellent stability compared to the Fe@C or traditional FeMn/SiO2 catalyst. The superior activity could be attributed to the enrichment of Fe elements at the margin stemming from the replacement of central Mn species, promoting the formation of more active iron carbides by combining with the surrounding carbonaceous matter. Particularly, the "confinement effect" of the core-shell structure for FeMn@C facilitated the polymerization of light olefins produced by Mn-modified Fe nanoparticles, resulting in more heavy hydrocarbons and enhanced stability. This work showed new insights to develop a potential FTS catalyst candidate.

Abstract:Supercritical-phase Fischer–Tropsch synthesis co-fed with 1-tetradecene was carried out over Co/SiO2 catalysts. It was found that a supercritical fluid could extract the product from the catalyst bed efficiently, and as a result, the mass transfers for both reactants and products were enhanced. 1-Tetradecene added as a chain initiator could participate in the chain growth process. This consequently increased the rate of formation of hydrocarbons larger than C14 significantly, and decreased the yield of C1–C13 hydrocarbons, leading to a flatter carbon number distribution of product than that obtained without olefin addition. In addition, wax composition analysis also showed that the average molecular weight and degree of saturation of wax increased due to addition of 1-tetradecene. The effects of catalyst pore size, concentration of co-fed 1-olefin, and CO/H2 ratio of syngas were investigated.

Abstract:Herein, we report the high Fischer–Tropsch synthesis performance of the Co-based catalysts supported on graphitized ordered mesoporous carbon (GMC-900) by using a facile strategy. Compared with CMK-3 and active carbon (AC), the obtained GMC-900 by using pollution-free soybean oil as a carbon source exhibited enhanced catalytic performance after loading Co species due to its highly crystallized graphitic structure and uniform dispersion of CoO. As a result, Co/GMC-900 was an effective catalyst with the maximum C 5+ selectivity of 52.6%, which much outperformed Co/CMK-3 and Co/AC. This research provides an approach to produce advanced Co-based catalysts with satisfactory performance for efficient Fischer–Tropsch synthesis.

Abstract:Zn- and Na-modulated Fe catalysts were fabricated by a simple coprecipitation/washing method. Zn greatly changed the size of iron species, serving as the structural promoter, while the existence of Na on the surface of the Fe catalyst alters the electronic structure, making the catalyst very active for CO activation. Most importantly, the electronic structure of the catalyst surface suppresses the hydrogenation of double bonds and promotes desorption of products, which renders the catalyst unexpectedly reactive toward alkenes-especially C5+ alkenes (with more than 50% selectivity in hydrocarbons)-while lowering the selectivity for undesired products. This study enriches C-1 chemistry and the design of highly selective new catalysts for high-value chemicals.

Abstract:Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is a promising technology to convert syngas derived from non-petroleum-based resources to valuable chemicals or fuels. Selectively producing target products will bring great economic benefits, but unfortunately it is theoretically limited by Anderson–Schulz–Flory (ASF) law. Herein, we synthesize size-uniformed cobalt nanocrystals embedded into mesoporous SiO2 supports, which is likely the structure of water-melon seeds inside pulps. We successfully tune the selectivity of products from diesel-range hydrocarbons (66.2%) to gasoline-range hydrocarbons (62.4%) by controlling the crystallite sizes of confined cobalt from 7.2 to 11.4 nm, and modify the ASF law. Generally, larger Co crystallites increase carbon-chain growth, producing heavier hydrocarbons. But here, we interestingly observe a reverse phenomenon: the uniformly small-sized cobalt crystallites can strongly adsorb active C* species, and the confined structure will inhibit aggregation of cobalt crystallites and escape of reaction intermediates in FTS, inducing the higher selectivity towards heavier hydrocarbons.

Abstract:The influence of pore texture and nitrogen species of the carbon support for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis was investigated using well-defined catalysts derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Two typical MOFs were employed in the carbonization process to prepare the target catalysts, i.e. nitrogen-rich ZIF-67 and nitrogen-free Co-MOF-74. The Co-MOF-74-derived nanocomposite (Co@C) showed a carbon monoxide (CO) conversion of 30%, whereas the ZIF-67-derived nanocomposite (Co@NC) exhibited a CO conversion of 10%. The nitrogen-free Co@C composite showed 65% selectivity for long-chain hydrocarbons (C-5(+)) and 10% selectivity for short-chain hydrocarbons (C-2-C-4) after 100 h on stream; on the other hand, the Co@NC composite showed 31% selectivity for C-5(+) products and 37% selectivity for short-chain hydrocarbons (C-2-C-4) after 100 h on stream. The excellent CO conversion was attributed to the large pore size of the carbon support, which facilitates the diffusion of the hydrocarbons. The high C-2-C-4 selectivity originates from the influence of nitrogen species in the carbon support. This study is expected to open a new avenue for the design of new catalysts for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis with high activity and superior selectivity via choosing suitable MOFs precursors.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) honeycomb-like structured graphene (HSG)-supported ternary K-promoted magnesium ferrite catalysts (K-MgFe/HSG) are prepared and evaluated in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to the lower olefins (FTO). The catalysts bear interconnected mesoporous-macroporous framework of graphene nanosheets decorated with homogeneously sized magnesium ferrite nanoparticles (NPs). Under typical FTO reaction conditions, the composition-optimized 1K-MgFe/HSG catalyst affords a reduced CO2 selectivity of 40.4%, an excellent weight specific activity to hydrocarbons of 1825 mu mol(CO) g(Fe)(-1) s(-1), and an appreciable selectivity to the lower olefins (C-2 -C-4 olefins) of 57.8%, thus giving rise to a record high productivity of the lower olefins of 1055 mu mol(CO) g(Fe)(-1) s(-1) The excellent catalytic efficiency is tentatively attributed to the synergetic effect of Mg and K on adsorption and dissociation of CO. The catalyst also exhibits better durability than previously reported iron-based FTO catalysts, without significant changes in the catalytic performance and the size of the iron carbide NPs after 120 h on stream, highlighting the crucial role of the 3D porous HSG support in restricting the agglomeration of the active phase during the challenging high-temperature and exothermic FTO reaction. Abstract:Direct conversion of carbon monoxide into fuel through Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is economically and environmentally beneficial as an alternative clean energy source. However, the activity and product selectivity need further investigation. In this work, a Co-MOF-71 (Co(1,4-BDC) (DMF)) was prepared solvothermally and pyrolyzed under nitrogen flow at low pyrolysis temperature to obtain a highly mesoporous Co@C-500 catalyst. The obtained catalyst exhibits high cobalt loading (53 wt%), high reducibility, optimum nanoparticle size (10.49 nm), and well-dispersed active sites. The catalytic activity of the catalyst was tested under different reaction conditions using a stainless steel fixed-bed reactor. The optimal performance showed a high CO conversion (82.7%), high C5+ selectivity (82.77%) with C5–C12 gasoline range hydrocarbons (71.9%), low C2–C4 selectivity (13%), and low methane selectivity (3.7%). Furthermore, the catalyst has a high C5+ yield of 68%, with the gasoline fraction (C5–C12) being the main product (59.1% yield). The catalyst shows superior FTS performance compared with other reported Co-containing catalysts, especially after being tested for more than 120 h without deactivation. Therefore, this work could contribute to the design of high-efficiency MOF-derived Co-FTS catalysts that could be used in the production of green and sustainable transportation fuel (gasoline).Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Low-temperature Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (LTFTS) is one of the green routes for liquid fuel production. We prepared nanocrystalline Fe-B catalysts with different particle sizes and microstructures by adjusting the addition sequence of the precursors. In situ carburization of the Fe-B catalysts at 423 K revealed that the addition sequence influenced the rate and degree of carburization pronouncedly. In LTFTS at 423 K, the Fe-B catalysts displayed similar, markedly high selectivity to liquid fuels, with similar to 48% for C-5-C-11 (gasoline fraction) and similar to 31% for C-12-C-20 (diesel fraction) hydrocarbons, and low selectivities to CO2 and CH4, manifesting excellent carbon atom economy over the non-noble Fe-B catalysts. While the carburization degree did not affect the product distribution, the activities of the Fe-B catalysts evolved positively with the epsilon-Fe2C content. Moreover, a good linear relationship was established between the Fe-Fe coordination number and the epsilon-Fe2C content. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We devised iron-based catalysts with honeycomb-structured graphene (HSG) as the support and potassium as the promoter for CO2 direct hydrogenation to light olefins (CO2-FTO). Over the optimal FeK1.5/HSG catalyst, the iron time yield of light olefins amounted to 73 μmolCO2 gFe-1 s-1 with high selectivity of 59%. No obvious deactivation occurred within 120 h on stream. The excellent catalytic performance is attributed to the confinement effect of the porous HSG on the sintering of the active sites and the promotion effect of potassium on the activation of inert CO2 and the formation of iron carbide active for CO2-FTO.

Abstract:Converting syngas to hydrocarbons at much lower temperature with high efficiencies, namely aqueous-phase Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, has great potentials. In this article, we synthesized aqueous-stable cobalt nanoparticles for the reaction. The catalyst has an activity of 7.4 × 10−7 molCO gCo−1 s−1 and C5+ selectivity of 40%, which is the best result in cobalt-catalyzed aqueous-phase Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The catalyst is recyclable after reaction. We also characterized the catalyst by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and in-situ infrared observation to study the catalyst reconstruction process and boron contamination.

Abstract:Conversion of CO2/H2 and CO/H2 into α-olefins via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) reaction has stimulated great interest. Herein, iron-based catalysts were developed to produce α-olefins with a tailor-made manner. As-synthesized 1.5Na-Fe1Zn1 exhibited high activity for CO2 conversion, high selectivity toward C2-C5 light olefins along with stable 1000 h run. Separate catalytic cracking of C5+ products over ZSM-5 nanosheet promoted light olefins selectivity up to 64.6 %, benefiting from the elimination of hydrogenation reaction. Interestingly, Na2S showed different effects in CO2-FTS and CO-FTS over iron-based catalysts. In detail, Na2S significantly suppressed catalytic activity and increased selectivity toward alkanes/CO in CO2-FTS reaction. However, it can surprisingly improve catalyst stability in CO-FTS reaction, leading to high activity at about 96 % CO conversion and high selectivity to long-chain C4+ olefins at about 65.4 %. In addition, it was demonstrated that H2O accumulation hindered H2/CO adsorption and dissociation, subsequent hydrogenation into CHx, and their carbon–carbon coupling, which resulted in catalyst deactivation and selectivity shifting toward CH4 and CO in atmospheric pressure CO2-FTS reaction.

Abstract:High dispersion Co3O4 nano-particles supported on hollow mesoporous silica spheres (HMSS) with bimodal pore distribution were prepared by “two-solvent” technique. As-synthesized catalysts were characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, XPS, SEM, TEM, and H2-TPR. The results showed that Co3O4 nano-particles were present inside the pore system of HMSS and the particles sizes increased with the increasing loaded cobalt content. The catalysts show good performance and high selectivity of C5–C18 hydrocarbon in F–T synthesis, which should attribute to the unique bimodal pore distribution facilitating reactants to access the active sites and to transport higher hydrocarbon products.

Abstract:The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) has been studied for decades; however, it is very difficult to simultaneously obtain a high one-pass CO conversion and a high selectivity of long-chain (C5+) hydrocarbons. A layered CoMn/TiO2 catalyst is fabricated and used as an efficient catalyst in FTS. The unique layered structure of the CoMn/TiO2 catalyst effectively inhibits the agglomeration of Co nanoparticles and enhances the diffusion of the reactants and products in FTS. The catalyst exhibits superior activity, high C5+ selectivity, and excellent stability due to its unique multiple mesopores structure as well as high cobalt dispersion. Even at a nearly complete one-pass CO conversion (>95%), which is considered to be a very harsh condition in the FTS reaction, CoMn/TiO2 still exhibits a high C5+ hydrocarbon selectivity of around 93% and a very low selectivity of undesired Cl products (CH4 and CO2) of below 4.5%.

Abstract:The effect of reaction phase on CO conversion and the hydrocarbon yield was presented. CO conversion in supercritical phase was higher than that in gas phase and the yield of hydrocarbons, except methane, showed the same trend. The Co/SiO2 catalysts with different pore size but the same amount of metal on specific surface area were investigated. The properties and composition of catalysts and their reaction performance were compared. The selectivity to the heavier hydrocarbons increased with increasing catalyst pore size, while the CO conversion decreased. Added 1-tetradecene, as a chain initiator, could participate in the chain propagation process, and consequently promoted formation of hydrocarbons larger than C14, inhibited the formation of C1-C13 hydrocarbons, which made the carbon number distribution deviated from ASF distribution significantly. Species involved in the chain growth process was not limited to the CH2. C2H4 was incorporated into carbon chain growth.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica-encapsulated iron materials contribute to the suppression of self-aggregation and thereby enhances the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis activity. However, constructing Fe-based supported catalysts with high activity and selectivity in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to lower olefins (FTO) by a conventional mesoporous silica support has been proven challenging due to its low hydrothermal stability and low reducibility. Herein, we developed a core-shell Fe@SiO2-GC structure with an optimized interface of the catalyst by introducing graphitic carbon (GC) that weakened the Fe-SiO2 interaction. Transmission electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption-desorption characterization proved GC-modified catalysts had well-defined core-shell structures. The Fe@SiO2-GC-2 containing the optimal GC content had the largest surface area and pore volume, and outperformed Fe2O3@SiO2 in terms of CO conversion (60.1%) and C2-C4 olefin selectivity (40.7%) within 100 h. The significant improvement of FTO performance was attributed to the rigid porous framework of GC, which allowed free access of syngas and inhibited mesoporous channel collapse during FTO, so the catalytic activity and stability were improved by the synergism between higher Fe dispersion and reducibility. Moreover, the narrow well-defined mesoporous channel also exerted a modest spatial restriction effect, which inhibited the formation of long-chain hydrocarbon and tailored the product distribution toward lower distillate, thus improving the selectivity toward C2-C4.
