Abstract:Dense (1-x)SrLaAlO4-xTiO(2) (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15) composite ceramics were prepared via a standard solidstate reaction method. The effect of TiO2 addition on the sintering behavior, phase composition, microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of SrLaAlO4 ceramics were systematically investigated. The X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the co-existence of the two phases and the microstructure evolutions were observed using scanning electron microscopy analysis. The dielectric constant of the present ceramics increased from 17.5 at x= 0-21.2 at x = 0.15, and the negative temperature coefficient of resonant frequency of SrLaAlO4 ceramics (-30 ppm/degrees C) could be modified towards positive. Empirical models such as Lichtenecker logarithmic model and mixing rule were applied to explain the variation trend of the microwave dielectric properties in the present ceramics. The optimum microwave dielectric properties were achieved at x = 0.10 (epsilon(r) = 20.2, Qf = 79,500 GHz, tau(f) = 8 ppm/degrees C).

Abstract:Herein, glass-free microwave dielectric ceramics CaMg0.9-xLi0.2ZnxSi2O6 (x = 0-0.36) with excellent microwave dielectric properties were prepared via traditional solid-state reaction method. Phase composition and crystalline structure were identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD), which confirmed that the ceramics contained more than one phase. Rietveld refinement method was utilized to analyze XRD data and obtain structural information, such as lattice parameters. SEM photographs showed that Zn2+ substitution could effectively promote densification of the ceramics. Microwave dielectric properties were obviously influenced by the combination of multiple phases. Combined with Raman spectra, influences of Raman shift and FWHM of vibration peaks on microwave dielectric properties were determined. The CaMg0.9-xLi0.2ZnxSi2O6 ceramic exhibited high performance at x = 0.28 with: Q x f = 68,190 GHz, epsilon(r) = 7.51 and tau(f )= - 68 ppm/degrees C, when sintered at 900 degrees C. The studied ceramics are promising candidates for LTCC application.
Evolution of Phase Transformation on Microwave Dielectric Properties of BaSixO1+2x Ceramics and Their Temperature-Stable LTCC Materials

Abstract:BaSixO1+2x (1.61 ≤ x ≤ 1.90) and LiF-doped BaSi1.63O4.26 ceramics were prepared by using a traditional solid-state method at the optimal sintering temperatures. The evolution of phase compositions of BaSixO1+2x (1.61 ≤ x ≤ 1.9) ceramics was revealed. The coexistence of Ba5Si8O21 and Ba3Si5O13 phases was obtained in BaSixO1+2x (1.61 ≤ x ≤ 1.67) ceramics. The BaSi2O5 phase appeared inBaSixO1+2x (1.68 ≤ x ≤ 1.90) ceramics. At 1.68 ≤ x ≤ 1.69, only BaSi2O5 and Ba3Si5O13 phases existed. With the further increase in x, the Ba5Si8O21 phase appeared, and BaSi2O5, Ba5Si8O21 and Ba3Si5O13 phases coexisted in BaSixO1+2x (1.70 ≤ x ≤ 1.90) ceramics. The phase compositions of BaSixO1+2x (1.61 ≤ x ≤ 1.90) ceramics were controlled by the ratio of Ba:Si. The BaSixO1+2x (x = 1.68) ceramics with 98.15 wt% Ba3Si5O13 and 1.85 wt% BaSi2O5 phases exhibited a negative τf value (−37.53 ppm/°C), and the good microwave dielectric properties of εr = 7.51, Q × f = 13,038 GHz and τf = +3.95 ppm/°C were obtained for BaSi1.63O4.26 ceramics with 70.05 wt% Ba5Si8O21 and 29.95 wt% Ba3Si5O13 phases. The addition of LiF sintering aids were able to reduce the sintering temperatures of BaSi1.63O4.26 ceramics to 800 °C. The phase composition of BaSi1.63O4.26 ceramics was affected by the sintering temperature, and the coexistence of Ba5Si8O21, Ba2Si3O8, BaSi2O5 and SiO2 phases was achieved in BaSi1.63O4.26-3 wt% LiF ceramics. The BaSi1.63O4.26-3 wt% LiF ceramics sintered at 800 °C exhibited dense microstructures and excellent microwave dielectric properties (εr = 7.10, Q × f = 12,463 GHz and τf = +5.75 ppm/°C), and no chemical reaction occurred between BaSi1.63O4.26-3 wt% LiF ceramics and the Ag electrodes, which indicates their potential for low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) applications.

Abstract:Herein, the influence of Cu2+ substitution on the phase composition, bulk density, microstructures, and microwave dielectric properties of Li2CuxZn1−xSiO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.06) ceramics prepared by a solid-state reaction were investigated. The results of XRD and mapping showed that Cu2+ substitution can avoid the influence of secondary phase on the properties of samples. According to the analysis of bulk density, microstructure and microwave dielectric properties, a proper amount of Cu substitution not only improved the sintering characteristics of Li2CuxZn1−xSiO4 ceramics, reduced the densification temperature from 1250 °C to 950 °C, but also increased the Q×f value. Furthermore, Cu2+ substitution also improved the temperature stability of the samples. Particularly, the Li2Cu0.04Zn0.96SiO4 ceramics sintered at 950 °C for 5 h possessed excellent microwave dielectric properties: εr = 5.624, Q×f = 12,764 GHz, and τf = −77 ppm/°C, exhibiting a potential for the low temperature co-fired ceramic applications.

Abstract:Novel LiAl5-xZnxO8-0.5x microwave dielectric ceramics were synthesized through a solid-state reaction route. Phase evolution of LiAl5-xZnxO8-0.5x was determined by XRD analysis. The XRD results indicated that the phase compositions had a P4(3)32 space group when 0 <= x <= 0.2 and a spinel structure when 0.3 <= x <= 0.5. The dielectric constant (epsilon(r)) of this series' solid solutions decreased with the increase in Zn doping content, which was in good agreement with the Clausius-Mossotti relation. Oxygen vacancy and the decreased degree of order degraded the quality factor (Q x f) of the two structures. The deterioration in quality factor was further verified by impedance spectroscopy. The temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency (tau(f)) decreased with the increase in x and was correlated with the unit cell volume. Finally, CaTiO3 was used as a compensation material to obtain a near-zero tau(f) of the LiAl5O8 ceramic.

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of Li2O-MgO-ZnO2-B2O3-SiO2 (LMZBS) glass on the microstructure, sintering behaviour and microwave dielectric properties of Li(Zn0.95Co0.05)(1.5)SiO4 ceramics. Li(Zn0.95Co0.05)(1.5)SiO4 powders were synthesised by a traditional solid-state route and added with different amounts of LMZBS glass (0-4 wt%) to decrease the sintering temperature of the ceramics to approximately 900 degrees C. The XRD patterns showed that no chemical reactions occurred between the Li(Zn0.95Co0.05)(1.5)SiO4 ceramics and the LMZBS glass within the doping range. The SEM images indicated that the sample added with 1.5 wt% glass and sintered at 900 degrees C exhibited a compact and uniform microstructure. In particular, the microwave dielectric properties of the products were related to LMZBS glass content and sintering temperature. The sample with 1.5 wt% LMZBS glass exhibited excellent microwave dielectric properties, namely, epsilon(r)=6.12, Qxf =83,600 GHz and tau(f)=-39.1ppm/degrees C.

Abstract:Phase evolution and microwave dielectric properties of SrTiO3 added ZnAl2O4-Zn2SiO4-SiO2 ceramics system were investigated. With the addition of SrTiO3, the sintering temperature for dense ceramic is reduced from 1320 degrees C to 1180-1200 degrees C. According to the nominal composition ZnAl2O4-Zn2SiO4-SiO2-ySrTiO(3), phase evolution is revealed by XRD patterns and Back Scattering Electron images: Zn2SiO4, ZnAl(2)O(4 )and SiO2 phases coexist at y = 0; SrTiO3 reacts with Zn2Al2O4 and SiO2 to form SrAl2Si2O8, TiO2 and Zn(2)Sia(4) at y = 0.2 to 0.8, and SiO2 phase disappears at y = 0.8; new phase of Zn2TiO4 is obtained at y = 1. The existence of TiO2 has important effect on the dielectric properties. The optimized microwave dielectric properties are obtained at y = 0.6 and the ceramics show low dielectric constant (7.16), high-quality factor (57, 837 GHz), and low temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (- 30 ppm degrees C-1).

Abstract:The Li2+xZnTi3O8+0.5x microwave dielectric ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method.The effects of nonstoichiometric Li element on A site on sintering behavior,phase structure and microwave dielectric properties of Li2+xZnTi3O8+0.5x ceramics were investigated.The results show that TiO2 phase disappears gradually,the bulk densities of the ceramics increase gradually,the permittivities decrease gradually,Q.f values first increase and then decrease,and the temperature coefficients of resonant frequency decrease slightly then keep a constant with increasing of Li content of Li2+xZnTi3O8+0.5x(x= –0.2～+0.2) ceramics.When x equals to –0.05,Li1.95ZnTi3O7.975 ceramic possesses the best microwave dielectric properties: a er of 26.41,Q.f value of 65 200 GHz,τf of –4.16×10–6/℃.

Abstract:In this work, the Zn2-xSiO4-x-xCuO (x = 0, 0.04, 0.08, 0.12, 0.16 and 0.20) ceramics were synthesized through solid state reaction. The dependence of microwave dielectric properties on the structure was investigated through X-ray diffraction (XRD) with Rietveld refinements, Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Raman spectra. The melting of CuO can reduce the densification temperature of Zn2-xSiO4-x ceramics. In comparison with x = 0, the x = 0.08 ceramics were densified at 1150℃ and the excellent microwave dielectric properties with low dielectric constant (εr = 6.01), high quality factor (Qf = 105 500 GHz) and τf = −28 ppm/°C, were obtained. The εr, Qf and τf value are dominated by covalency of Si-O bond and secondary phase, crystallinity and lattice energy, respectively. This provides a theoretical basis to further adjust the microwave dielectric property (especially τf value) from the structural point of view.

Abstract:Microwave dielectric ceramics with the composition of (1−x)Li2Zn3Ti4O12 (LZT)–xTiO2 (0≤x<1) were prepared by the solid-state reaction method. The crystal structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. (1−x)LZT–xTiO2 solid solutions show a cubic structure [P4332 (212)] similar to Zn2Ti3O8 in the range of 0.2≤x≤0.4. When the x value reaches 0.6, the rutile TiO2 phase appears. The microwave dielectric properties were studied by a Network Analyzer. The relative permittivity (ɛr) and temperature coefficients of resonant frequency (τf) were adjusted with increasing x values. Especially, 0.4LZT–0.6TiO2 ceramic exhibits good microwave dielectric properties with a ɛr of 25.1, a high Q×f of 62,000GHz and a near-zero τf of −5.2ppm/°C.

Abstract:The Ca(1+2y)Sn(1-x)Si(1+y)O(5-2x+4y) low-permittivity microwave dielectric ceramics were prepared through solid-state reaction at 1350-1450 degrees C for 5 h. The relations between microwave dielectric properties and phase compositions for non-stoichiometric Ca((1+2y))Sn((1-x))Si((1+y))O((5-2x+4y) )ceramics have been investigated. A single CaSnSiO5 phase with abnormally positive temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (tau(f ) = + 62.5 ppm/degrees C) was synthesised at 1450 degrees C. This composition was an effective tau(f) compensator of CaSiO3 and Ca3SnSi2O9 phases with typically negative tau(f) value. The CaSiO3 second phase was related to the Sn deficiency in the CaSn(1-x)SiO(5-2x) (0 < x < 1.0) composition, whereas the Ca3SnSi2O9 second phase was obtained by controlling the Ca:Sn:Si ratios on the basis of the Ca(1+2y)SnSi(1+y)O(5+4y) (0 < y < 1.0) composition. A promising low-permittivity millimetre-wave ceramic with most excellent microwave dielectric properties (epsilon(r) = 10.2, Q x f = 81,000 GHz and tau(f) = -4.8 ppm/degrees C) was produced from the Ca(1+2y)SnSi(1+y)O(5+4y) (y = 0.4) ceramic.

Abstract:Li2O-2MgO-Al2O3-6MoO3 system ceramics were synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. The phase composition, microstructure, dielectric temperature spectrum, impedance and microwave dielectric properties of ceramics were studied. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the ceramics were multiphase composite and the main phase transformed from Li2Al2MoO15 to LiMgAl(MoO4)3. The temperature spectrum shown that there existed phase transition with increasing the measured temperature. The impedance analysis identified that conductivity behavior came from the effect of grain boundaries. The ceramics could be densified at 650∼725°C. After sintering at 700°C, the ceramics exhibited the best microwave dielectric properties with Q × f = 21,731 GHz, εr = 6.76 and τf = − 50 ppm/°C, indicating that it is a candidate for low-temperature cofired ceramic devices.

Abstract:The effects of the partial substitution of Li+ for Mg2+ on the microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of ceramics with nominal composition Li2xMg2-xSiO4 (0.25 <= x <= 1.25) were investigated. Li2xMg2-xSiO4 powders were synthesised by the traditional solid-state reaction. A fixed amount of Li2O-B2O3-Bi2O3-SiO2 (LBBS) glass was used as a sintering aid to help decrease the sintering temperature to around 900 degrees C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the sintered specimens revealed that the phase of Li2MgSiO4 gradually replaced that of Mg2SiO4 as the major phase with increased x content in the ceramics with said nominal composition. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that moderate Li substitution contributed to densification and uniform grains in the Li2xMg2-xSiO4 (0.25 <= x <= 1.25) ceramics. Additionally, microwave dielectric properties were strongly related to the substitution content and sintering temperature. The sintered sample of ceramics with nominal composition Li2xMg2-xSiO4 exhibited good microwave dielectric properties when x = 1 and sintered at 900 degrees C: epsilon(r) = 6.1, Q x f = 44,500 GHz and tau(f) = -13 ppm/degrees C. These findings indicated high potential for LTCC applications.

Abstract:Series microwave dielectric ceramics with the composition of Ba4LiNb3−xSbxO12 (0≤x≤3) were prepared by the solid state reaction method. The phase transformation, microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of ceramics were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a network analyzer. The sequence of structure transformation was detected with increasing x values; Hexagonal (0≤x≤0.75)→Hexagonal+Cubic (0.75<x≤1.25)→Cubic (1.25<x≤3). The microwave dielectric properties were improved through substituting Sb for Nb. Especially, the temperature coefficient of resonate frequency (τf) can be tailored to zero. Based on the overall performance, the best result was obtained for the Ba4LiNb2SbO12 (εr=24.6, Qf=52,100GHz, τf=0ppm/°C), indicating that the Ba4LiNb3−xSbxO12 ceramics are suited for the dielectric resonate applications.
Crystal Structure and Microwave Dielectric Properties of Li2Mg0.6-xCoxZ N0.4sio4 Ceramic for LTCC Applications

Abstract:In this work, Li2Mg0.6-xCoxZn0.4SiO4 ceramics (x = 0-0.4) added with 3 wt% Li2O-B2O3-Bi2O3-SiO2 (LBBS) glass were synthesised using the solid-state reaction method. The effects of substituting Co2+ for Mg2+ in Li2Mg0.6-xCoxZn0.4SiO4 ceramics on crystal structure, microstructure, densification, crystallisation and microwave dielectric properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that monoclinic Li2MgSiO4, monoclinic Li2ZnSiO4 and orthorhombic Li2CoSiO4 formed finite solid solution in Li2Mg0.6-xCoxZn0.4SiO4 ceramics. Clear grain boundaries were observed via scanning electron microscopy. The substitution of Co2+ for Mg2+ increased grain size, densification, crystallinity degree and dielectric constant; it also reduced the dielectric loss of the ceramics to a certain extent. The absolute values of tau(f) were positively related to the crystallinity degree. Li2Mg0.55Co0.05Zn0.4SiO4 ceramic added with 3 wt% LBBS and sintered at 900 degrees C exhibited considerable microwave dielectric properties of epsilon(r) = 5.8, Q x f = 47,518 GHz and tau(f) = -74.8 ppm/degrees C. Therefore, the ceramic is considered a candidate low-temperature co-fired ceramic material for substrate and filter applications.

Abstract:(Zn1−xCox)2SiO4 (0≤x≤0.1) powders were synthesized by the traditional solid-state process. Fixed amount of Li2O-B2O3-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3 (LBSCA)glass was added to (Zn1−xCox)2SiO4 powders to decrease the sintering temperature around 900°C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) diffraction spectra indicated that there was no second phase formed while the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images demonstrated that moderate Co-substitution contributed to the grain densification and uniformity in (Zn1−xCox)2SiO4 system. Moreover, the microwave dielectric properties strongly depended on the substitution content and sintering temperature. When sintered at 900°C, the sample with 0.05 Co substitution presented a compact microstructure with uniform grains and high microwave dielectric properties: εr=6.5, Q×f=57,000GHz and τf=−55ppm/°C.

Li2TiO3 and Zn2SiO4 reacted to form Li2ZnSiO4 and Zn2Ti3O8, where Zn2Ti3O8 is formed during Zn2TiO4 cooling. The microwave dielectric properties of samples are mainly affected by the characteristics and relative content of crystal phase and densification. With the increase of x, the relative dielectric constant (epsilon(r)) decreases gradually. The quality factor (Qf) value increases at first, reaches the maximum value at x=0.2, and then decreases. The temperature coefficient of resonance frequency (tau(f)) value has a sharp decrease due to the increase of Li2ZnSiO4. A near zero tau(f) of about -2.0 ppm/degrees C was obtained in 0.8Li(2)TiO(3)-0.2Zn(2)SiO(4) ceramic sintered at 1150 degrees C for 4 h with epsilon(r) value of 17.67, Qf value of 19,600 GHz. Thus, it could be a candidate for microwave devices.
Effect of Co and Sr Substitution on the Microwave Dielectric Properties of CaMg0.9Li0.2Si2O6-based Ceramics for LTCC Application

Abstract:In this work, two low-temperature co-fired silicate ceramics (CaMg0.9-xLi0.2CoxSi2O6, x = 0.15-0.75, CMLCS; CaMg0.9-yLi0.2SrySi2O6, y = 0, 0.05, 0.1-0.5, CMLSS) were synthesized via solid-state reaction method with 0.5 wt%LBSCA glass addition. CMLCS and CMLSS were densely sintered at 925 degrees C, and had good chemical compatibility with silver. Optimal microwave dielectric properties (Er = 6.71, Qxf = 30124 GHz, and zf =-79.06 ppm/degrees C) and (Er = 6.78, Qxf = 32530 GHz, and zf=-52.99 ppm/degrees C) were obtained for CMLC0.15S and CMLS0.05S respectively. With increase in Co and Sr substitution, XRD and Raman spectra showed that second phases were produced, and densification process of CaMgSi2O6-based ceramics was promoted. Dielectric con-stant was influenced by relative density, Raman shift and second phase. The parameter Qxf was affected by the FWHM of Raman peaks as well as extrinsic factors that affected the temperature coefficient of resonant fre-quency. Therefore, the results suggested the potential of these two ceramics as candidates for LTCC application.
Relationship Between the Structure and Microwave Dielectric Properties of Non-Stoichiometric Li2+xSiO3 Ceramics

Abstract:Li2SiO3 ceramic is one of the most important candidate materials for high-frequency microwave ceramics; however, minimal information about the relationship between the structure and microwave dielectric properties of non-stoichiometric Li2+xSiO3 ceramics is available. In the present work, nominal Li2+xSiO3 (x=0, 0.04, 0.08, 0.12 and 0.16) ceramics were prepared by a conventional solid-state sintering technique. The structure of Li2+xSiO3 ceramics was investigated via X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as Raman spectra experiment and calculation. Refinements showed that part of the non-stoichiometric Li ions entered the Li2SiO3 lattice. Along with the results of the XRD analysis, Raman spectra experiment and calculation confirmed the presence of Li2Si2O5 phase in all the samples. Compared with stoichiometric Li2SiO3, non-stoichiometric Li provided higher densification and less ordering. Moreover, the SiO4 tetrahedrons formed more ionic bonds, which reduced distortion polarization. Further, the dielectric constants, which were observed to be mainly dependent on distortion polarization and densification, firstly increased then decreased slightly with increasing non-stoichiometric Li content. However, the quality factor (Q×f), which was primarily driven by ordering degree of Li-O bonds, firstly decreased then increased with increasing non-stoichiometric Li content. The results obtained on the Li2+xSiO3 ceramics, might offer some useful information for study and application about high-frequency microwave.
Phase evolution and microwave dielectric properties of the Li 2(1+ x ) ZnGe 3 O 8 spinel oxides

Abstract:Recently, there have been considerable interests in the Li-containing spinel oxides as promising microwave dielectric materials. Li loss at elevated temperatures, however, is known to be inevitable, resulting in deterioration on dielectric performances. Here the influence of Li nonstoichiometry on the microwave dielectric properties of Li 2 ZnGe 3 O 8 , a spinel oxide, was reported. An appropriate level of Li excess enhanced the densification of Li 2 ZnGe 3 O 8 and increased dielectric performances. In contrast, high level of Li excess induced the formation of the secondary phase of Li 2 ZnGeO 4 confirmed by XRD and Raman spectra, which in turn lowered the dielectric properties. Typically, a composition with x = 0.075, in the Li 2(1+ x ) ZnGe 3 O 8 ceramics exhibited the enhanced microwave dielectric properties with ε r = 10.68, Q × f = 77,300 GHz (at 13.3 GHz), and τ f = − 70.35 ppm/°C when sintered at 940 °C for 4 h. Moreover, these compounds have well chemical compatibility with the silver electrodes.
