Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) alloy is the lightest metal material found because of its excellent physical and mechanical properties, specific strength, biocompatibility and biomechanical compatibility, therefore, it has very promising development prospects in aerospace, automobile manufacturing, and biodegradable materials. However, due to the relatively chemical properties of magnesium alloys, poor corrosion resistance, fast degradation rate, and poor wear resistance, they have been greatly restricted in practical applications. Therefore, anti-corrosion measures of magnesium alloys are particularly important. The manufacture of hydrophobic surfaces is a very effective method of anti-corrosion. The surface of super-hydrophobic polymer composites (i.e., thin coatings) is constructed on the surface of magnesium alloy materials to enhance their corrosion resistance and wear resistance, and the effect of its antiseptic measures is very impressive.

Abstract:The practical applications of magnesium alloys are significantly limited owing to being susceptible to corrosion. In this study, superhydrophobic double layered MgAl-LDH/epoxy (DMALE) composite coatings were fabricated on magnesium alloys by the combination of hydrothermal synthesis and spraying methods, which consisted of a bottom layer of MgAl-LDH(WO42−)/epoxy coating and a top layer of superhydrophobic hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS)-modified MgAl-LDH(CO32−)/epoxy coating. The as-prepared DMALE coating delivered superior superhydrophobic and self-cleaning property. Such composite coating was demonstrated to possess good anticorrosion property, good chemical stability, and high abrasion resistance. This large-scale prepared composite coating is potentially useful for corrosion protection of magnesium alloys.

Abstract:Inspiration from nature provides the combination of micro-nano particles and low surface energy materials, a spraying method has been employed to prepare SiO2@MWCNTs@PFOTES superhydrophobic coatings on magnesium alloy, which can enhance corrosion resistance and coating stability. The prepared coating is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2) particles obtained by hydrolysis and condensation reaction of ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and carboxylate modified carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as rough structure, and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-Perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFOTES) as the fluorine silane coupling agent. The coating’s composition is determined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are used to investigate the corrosion resistance of the prepared superhydrophobic surface. Through the salt spray test, the salt resistance of the coating is further discussed. The corrosion current density after the coating is more than four orders of magnitude lower than that of bare magnesium alloy AZ31B, and the water contact angle increases from ~32° to more than 162°. The mechanical, chemical and environmental stability of the superhydrophobic coating has been proved through wear test, immersion test and salt spray test.

Abstract:This research presents the development of a surface treatment for AZ91D magnesium alloy that exhibits both superhydrophobic and anticorrosive properties. Initially, a zinc-based phosphate film was deposited on the magnesium alloy surface. Subsequently, a composite coating with superhydrophobic properties was produced by surface modification using a fluorosilane-ethanol solution. The composite coating's microstructure, chemical composition, wettability, self-cleaning, and anti-corrosion properties were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, a contact angle measurement instrument, and an electrochemical workstation. The results demonstrated that the main components of the composite coating were P, O, Zn, F, and C. The static contact angle reached 158°, providing superior self-cleaning and acid and alkali corrosion resistance. Additionally, the charge transfer resistance and coating resistance of the composite coating were significantly higher than those of the magnesium alloy substrate, effectively preventing corrosion and preserving the surface from fouling.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic coatings have great potential applications in protecting metallic substrates due to their excellent water-repellency and high corrosion resistance, however, most of their preparation processes are complicated, expensive and difficult to scale up for practical applications. Herein, we reported a facile, low-cost and large-scale-preparation method to fabricate superhydrophobic coatings on the magnesium alloy, of which superhydrophobic hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS)-modified diatomite powder was first synthesized by electrochemical deposition method, and subsequent spray coating of the epoxy resin and superhydrophobic diatomite mixture was performed to form superhydrophobic composite coatings on the alloy substrates. The influencing factors of surface wettability of the modified diatomite were comprehensively investigated. Under the optimized synthesis condition of a current density of 0.033 A·cm−2 and electrodeposition time of 2.5 h, the superhydrophobic diatomite powder had an approximately 260 % (in mass fraction) production yield. The spray-coated composite coating delivered superior superhydrophobicity with water contact angle of circa 157° and self-cleaning ability. Such superhydrophobic coating also exhibited a high corrosion protection efficiency of circa 99.8 % and excellent anti-icing performance, and was demonstrated to own ISO grade 1 adhesion and good chemical stability to bear 90 days of immersion in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution and 20 days of salt spray testing without corrosion. In addition, the superhydrophobic composite coating exhibited great robustness against water impact and sand impact. Therefore, this diatomite/epoxy resin-based superhydrophobic coating can be effectively used for Mg alloy anti-corrosion and has the potential in large-scale production for practical applications.

Abstract:A superhydrophobic ceria‐based composite coating is developed to improve anticorrosion properties of AZ61 magnesium alloy, fabricating via chemical conversion method followed by hydrothermal treatment. The cerium conversion coating has a block structure with microcracks. After the hydrothermal treatment, a dense CeO2 layer, porous CeO2 nanorods, and stearic absorbing layers are grown stepwise on the conversion coating. And the composite coating is hydrophobic or even superhydrophobic and has almost no microcracks. As the hydrothermal reaction time increases, the water contact angle of the composite coating first increases and then decreases, and it reaches the maximum value of 152° after hydrothermal treatment for 4 h. Both the dense CeO2 layer and the superhydrophobic stearic absorbing layer can effectively prevent the electrolyte from contacting the substrate; the corrosion current density of the superhydrophobic composite coating is lower than that of the hydrophilic composite coating and the cerium conversion coating, and has the best corrosion resistance.
Silica nanoparticles enhanced polysiloxane-modified nickel-based coatings on Mg alloy for robust superhydrophobicity and high corrosion resistance

Abstract:A stable composite coating with good superhydrophobicity and corrosion resistance was fabricated on the magnesium alloy surface. The composite coating consists of a rough nickel structure prepared by chemical deposition of nickel‐phosphorus alloy and electrodeposition of nano-cone-shaped pure nickel film sequentially, and a nanoparticles-doped superhydrophobic polysiloxane film. The successful construction of the composite coating was ascertained by characterizing the chemical structure, elements, bonding information, and surface morphology using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray electron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), etc. The wear resistance and wettability tests show that the pristine composite coatings modified with either SiO2 (ELNi/ECNi/Ms) or ZnO (ELNi/ECNi/Mz) nanoparticles had good superhydrophobicity. However, the ELNi/ECNi/Ms. coating was more stable than the latter in wettability after abrasion. The ELNi/ECNi/Ms. composite coating with the addition of 2.0 wt% SiO2 nanoparticle formed an optimal superhydrophobic surface showing the highest water contact angle (165.3° ± 1.5°) and the lowest water sliding angle (2.2° ± 0.7°). Electrochemical tests indicate that, in contrast to naked magnesium alloy, the low-frequency impedance modulus (|Z|ƒ=0.01 Hz) and the corrosion current density of the ELNi/ECNi/Ms. composite coatings were respectively increased and decreased by nearly four orders of magnitude, demonstrating the excellent corrosion protection.

Abstract:Endowing Mg alloy surface with superhydrophobicity solves its poor corrosion resistance for broadening the wide application fields. However, the superhydrophobicity is vulnerable to failure under service environments due to the exfoliation and degradation of surface material. Hence, a bilayer composite coating composed of microarc oxidation layer and superhydrophobic layer was fabricated to protect Mg alloys by modulating superhydrophobic coating/substrate interface. The bilayer coating with a water contact angle of 158.3° possesses excellent water-repellent, and self-cleaning properties. In addition, the bilayer coating consistently remains superhydrophobicity in acid, alkaline, high/low temperature, and ultraviolet radiation environments, indicating the excellent environmental stability. Notedly, the lowest-frequency impedance value of bilayer coating (6.78 × 106 Ω·cm) increases five orders of magnitude compared with that of Mg alloy (60.2 Ω·cm), and the inhibition efficiency is calculated to be 99.99 %. The excellent corrosion resistance of coating is attributed to the synergistic barrier protection of microarc oxidation layer and superhydrophobic layer, implying that it provides effective protection for Mg alloy. Therefore, the as-prepared bilayer coating has great application prospects in corrosion protection of Mg alloys toward different service environments.

Abstract:In this work, a superhydrophobic MgAl-layered double hydroxide with F- intercalation (LDH-F) was fabricated by a facile method and further modification by stearate (St) anions. Then, the composite was dispersed in the epoxy resin to prepare anti-corrosion coatings, which was applied for corrosion protection of Mg alloy. This kind of coatings protects Mg alloy from some aspects. Firstly, the superhydrophobic film impedes the water molecules penetrating into Mg substrate. Secondly, the superior anions exchange ability of LDH can be used to stockpile chloride ions and the release of fluorine ions can react with magnesium ions to form a magnesium fluoride (MgF2) protective film at the corrosion area of the Mg alloy. Lastly, the LDH itself layered structure is a physical barrier. The fabricated composites were comprehensively characterized with Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), water contact angle (CA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) was conducted to investigate the corrosion behavior of various composite coatings and the results demonstrated that the impedance modulus of the superhydrophobic layered double hydroxide epoxy (LDH-F-St-EP) coating reached 1.2 × 109 Ω cm2, showing excellent anti-corrosion performances.

Abstract:Formation of super-hydrophobic and corrosion-resistant coatings can provide significant corrosion protection to magnesium alloys. However, it remains a grand challenge to produce such coatings for magnesium-lithium alloys due to their high chemical reactivity. Herein, a one-step hydrothermal processing was developed using a stearic-acid-based precursor medium, which enables the hydrothermal conversion and the formation of low surface energy materials concurrently to produce the super-hydrophobic and corrosion-resistant coating. The multiscale microstructures with nanoscale stacks and microscale spheres on the surface, as well as the through-thickness stearates, lead to the super-hydrophobicity and excellent corrosion resistance of the obtained coating.

Abstract:It is important to improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy for expanding its application field. Poor durability seriously restricts the practical application of superhydrophobic anti-corrosion coatings. Here, a durable superhydrophobic anti-corrosion coating was prepared on AZ31 Mg substrate via a facile one-step spraying approach. The microscale glass fibers (GF) and nanoscale hydrophobic SiO 2 particles were integrated into the epoxy resin (ER) to construct superhydrophobic composite coating (ER/GF-SiO 2 ). Benefitting from the air cushion and physical barrier effect of superhydrophobic coating, the ER/GF-SiO 2 coating exhibits good reinforced protectives properties. Compared with the AZ31, the corrosion current density of superhydrophobic coating decreased by three orders of magnitude and the low-frequency impedance modulus decreased by one order of magnitude. The ER/GF-SiO 2 coating still maintained a high protective efficiency (89.44 %) after immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solutions for 13 d. The ER/GF-SiO 2 coating shown good mechanochemical durability. The superhydrophobicity can be maintained after 40 m of sandpaper abrasion, 30 min of water impact, 20 min of sand impact, and 80 cycles tape-peeling. Furthermore, the high bond strength of the coating-substrate was verified by energetic analysis of molecular dynamics simulation at a microscopic level. The facile and effective preparation process provides an effective strategy for large-scale industrial production of durable superhydrophobic coating.

Abstract:Corrosion caused by the active chemical properties of magnesium (Mg) alloys seriously restricts their applications in aerospace, transportation, biomedicine, and other fields. Although micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings can provide some corrosion protection for Mg alloys, their microporous structure is prone to localized corrosion. Herein, nanoflower-shaped zinc phosphate is prepared and hydrophobically modified. The commercial glue is used to bond the nanoflower-shaped zinc phosphate particle arrays to the MAO-coated AZ31B alloy substrate to produce a two-layer composite coating with superhydrophobic properties. The composite coating exhibits obvious repulsive effects in salt and acidic solutions as indicated by contact angles of 160° and 156°, respectively. The composite coating has improved electrochemical properties and immersion corrosion in both the salt and acidic solutions compared to the substrate and MAO-coated sample. Moreover, the composite coating retains the long-term superhydrophobic effects under different conditions such as immersion in salt and acidic solutions, water scouring, and sunlight exposure, which well indicates commercial applications.
Corrosion resistance and anti-soiling performance of micro-arc oxidation/graphene oxide/stearic acid superhydrophobic composite coating on magnesium alloys

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) alloys, the lightest metal construction material used in industry, play a vital role in future development. However, the poor corrosion resistance of Mg alloys in corrosion environments largely limits their potential wide applications. Therefore, a micro-arc oxidation/graphene oxide/stearic acid (MAO/GO/SA) superhydrophobic composite coating with superior corrosion resistance was fabricated on a Mg alloy AZ91D through micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technology, electrodeposition technique, and self-assembly technology. The composition and microstructure of the coating were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The effective protection of the MAO/GO/SA composite coating applied to a substrate was evaluated using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests, and salt spray tests. The results showed that the MAO/GO/SA composite coating with a petal spherical structure had the best superhydrophobicity, and it attained a contact angle of 159.53° ± 2°. The MAO/GO/SA composite coating exhibited high resistance to corrosion, according to electrochemical and salt spray tests.

Abstract:A multi-structured composite coating with superhydrophobic properties, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance was prepared on the surface of Mg-9Li-3Al alloy. A porous layer was formed on the substrate surface via micro-arc oxidation. Then, LDH was grown in situ on the MAO coating surface through hydrothermal treatment, sealing the pores in the coating. Finally, HDTMS-SiO2 was assembled on the LDH surface. The SiO2 formed an island-like micro-nano structure, trapping air and creating an "air cushion" on the coating surface,imparting superhydrophobicity (contact angle and sliding angle of 162.1 ± 2.1° and 4.2 ± 0.2°). And the corrosion resistance of the MLS coating is significantly improved the corrosion current density decreased by three orders of magnitude. The incorporation of HDTMS-SiO2 not only improved the corrosion resistance of the coating but also significantly enhanced its wear resistance. During friction, the SiO2 nanoparticles acted as "ball bearings," shifting the friction mode from sliding to rolling. The fragmented SiO2 further served as a solid lubricant, reducing the coefficient of friction to 0.11.

Abstract:Because of some defects such as holes and cracks, the corrosion resistance of micro-arc oxidation coating needs to be improved by surface modification. In this paper, LDH/MAO film with a micro-/nano-structure is constructed on the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy by controlling the composition and concentration of the hydrothermal solution. The superhydrophobic surface is successfully constructed by coating an OTES modifier on the surface of LDH/MAO film by the spin-coating method. The surface morphologies, contact angles, and corrosion resistance of composite coatings are tested. The results show that the OTES-LDH/MAO composite coatings of magnesium alloy can seal the defects in the MAO film well to achieve a superhydrophobic effect and better corrosion resistance. Compared with a MgO ceramic film, the water contact angle of OTES-LDH/MAO composite coatings is increased from 38° to 155°; the corrosion potential increases by 0.7 V, the corrosion current density and polarization resistance decreases and increases by four orders of magnitude, respectively; and the corrosion resistance becomes much higher than that of MAO film.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are promising materials in the industrial and biomedical field, but the excessive corrosion rate limits their practical application. To improve the anti-corrosion property of Mg alloys, the composite coating composed of calcium phosphate (CaP) and chitosan (CS) was prepared on AZ31 Mg alloy via simple electrophoretic deposition and chemical conversion method. The water contact angle (WCA) of the composite coating was as high as 158.6° after being modified by stearic acid. Furthermore, a superhydrophobic single CaP coating with the WCA value of 158.5° was fabricated by a chemical conversion method and low energy modification. The superhydrophobic coatings exhibited good self-cleaning properties to prevent the pollution of different pollutants. Furthermore, the obtained superhydrophobic Ca-P/CS composite coating can withstand more times of tape-peeling because of its better bonding ability. Moreover, compared with the superhydrophobic single CaP coating, the composite coating can provide more effective protection to the AZ31 substrate in electrochemical measurements and immersion test. Therefore, the superhydrophobic Ca-P/CS composite coating with significant performance advantages can expand the application fields of Mg alloys.

Facile fabrication of robust superhydrophobic coating for enhanced corrosion protection on AZ91 magnesium alloy by electroless Ni-B/GO plating

Abstract:Artificial superhydrophobic surfaces have drawn extensive research interest due to their great applicational potential. However, the specialized materials and equipment, multistep preparation processes, and vulnerable rough structures severely restrict their industrial development. In this research, a robust superhydrophobic Ni-B/GO composite coating was fabricated successfully on AZ91 magnesium alloy based on electroless plating (EP), followed by chemical modification with stearic acid ethanol solution. With a water contact angle of 162.8° and a sliding angle of 1.3°, the superhydrophobic coating displayed strong physical/chemical stability and outstanding self-cleaning. Moreover, the superhydrophobic coating revealed excellent corrosion resistance with higher E corr (−0.411 V) and lower i corr (2.14 × 10 −6 A·cm −2 ) in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Also, the R ct value was 2.75 × 10 5 Ω·cm 2 and increased three orders of magnitude compared with the AZ91 Mg. Therefore, this study offers an innovative perspective for fabricating the micro/nano rough structures on magnesium alloy, and the fabrication of superhydrophobic coatings by electroless nickel plating as a low-cost and eco-friendly method will have good industrial application prospects.

Highly Corrosion Resistant Composite Coatings on Magnesium Alloy

Abstract:A composite coating on magnesium alloy is developed. The corrosion resistance of the coating is improved greatly by a combination of electroless nickel coating and nickel-zinc alloy electrodeposit. The coating is less than 35 micrometers thick, but can stand 800-1000 hours of neutral salt spray test, so can be used as a protective coating for magnesium alloys in severe corrosive environment.

Abstract:Magnesium alloys have been widely used as a new medical metal implant material because of their good physicochemical properties, biodegradability and biocompatibility. But magnesium alloys are very chemically active and easily corroded after being implanted in the human body. In this paper, a hydroxyapatite/fatty acid salt superhydrophobic composite film was prepared on the surface of magnesium alloys by hydrothermal method. By testing, the water contact angle of the prepared composite film layer reaches 154.5°, and the corrosion current density is reduced by two orders of magnitude, which effectively improves the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys. The hydrophobic properties of the prepared superhydrophobic composite membrane show good chemical stability. This preparation method can have good application prospects in industry and medical materials because of its simplicity and efficiency.
