Abstract:Inspiration from nature provides the combination of micro-nano particles and low surface energy materials, a spraying method has been employed to prepare SiO2@MWCNTs@PFOTES superhydrophobic coatings on magnesium alloy, which can enhance corrosion resistance and coating stability. The prepared coating is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2) particles obtained by hydrolysis and condensation reaction of ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and carboxylate modified carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as rough structure, and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-Perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFOTES) as the fluorine silane coupling agent. The coating’s composition is determined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are used to investigate the corrosion resistance of the prepared superhydrophobic surface. Through the salt spray test, the salt resistance of the coating is further discussed. The corrosion current density after the coating is more than four orders of magnitude lower than that of bare magnesium alloy AZ31B, and the water contact angle increases from ~32° to more than 162°. The mechanical, chemical and environmental stability of the superhydrophobic coating has been proved through wear test, immersion test and salt spray test.

Abstract:A superhydrophobic Zn-Fe alloy coating was prepared on the surface of a reactive magnesium alloy using a simple, low-cost, eco-friendly method. Firstly, the Zn-Fe coating was obtained in a neutral glycerol Zn-Fe plating solution, which is green, compositionally stable, and non-corrosive to the equipment. And then the superhydrophobic surface with a flower-like microstructure was obtained by grafting myristic acid onto the Zn-Fe coating via a chelation reaction. The water contact angle was >150° and the rolling angle was 3°-4°. The corrosion rate of the two groups of superhydrophobic magnesium alloy samples with electrodeposition time of 30 and 50 min, respectively, was reduced by about 87% compared to that of the bare magnesium alloy. The prepared superhydrophobic coatings exhibit high performance in self-cleaning, abrasion resistance, and corrosion resistance.

Abstract:A stable composite coating with good superhydrophobicity and corrosion resistance was fabricated on the magnesium alloy surface. The composite coating consists of a rough nickel structure prepared by chemical deposition of nickel‐phosphorus alloy and electrodeposition of nano-cone-shaped pure nickel film sequentially, and a nanoparticles-doped superhydrophobic polysiloxane film. The successful construction of the composite coating was ascertained by characterizing the chemical structure, elements, bonding information, and surface morphology using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray electron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), etc. The wear resistance and wettability tests show that the pristine composite coatings modified with either SiO2 (ELNi/ECNi/Ms) or ZnO (ELNi/ECNi/Mz) nanoparticles had good superhydrophobicity. However, the ELNi/ECNi/Ms. coating was more stable than the latter in wettability after abrasion. The ELNi/ECNi/Ms. composite coating with the addition of 2.0 wt% SiO2 nanoparticle formed an optimal superhydrophobic surface showing the highest water contact angle (165.3° ± 1.5°) and the lowest water sliding angle (2.2° ± 0.7°). Electrochemical tests indicate that, in contrast to naked magnesium alloy, the low-frequency impedance modulus (|Z|ƒ=0.01 Hz) and the corrosion current density of the ELNi/ECNi/Ms. composite coatings were respectively increased and decreased by nearly four orders of magnitude, demonstrating the excellent corrosion protection.

Abstract:The practical applications of magnesium alloys are significantly limited owing to being susceptible to corrosion. In this study, superhydrophobic double layered MgAl-LDH/epoxy (DMALE) composite coatings were fabricated on magnesium alloys by the combination of hydrothermal synthesis and spraying methods, which consisted of a bottom layer of MgAl-LDH(WO42−)/epoxy coating and a top layer of superhydrophobic hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS)-modified MgAl-LDH(CO32−)/epoxy coating. The as-prepared DMALE coating delivered superior superhydrophobic and self-cleaning property. Such composite coating was demonstrated to possess good anticorrosion property, good chemical stability, and high abrasion resistance. This large-scale prepared composite coating is potentially useful for corrosion protection of magnesium alloys.

Abstract:The poor corrosion resistance of magnesium (Mg) alloys limits their applications, and preparing the superhydrophobic coating with a facile and cost-effective method is meaningful for anti-corrosion protection of Mg alloys. In this work, a superhydrophobic needle-like Ca-P coating was fabricated on AZ31 substrate by a chemical conversion method and low energy modification with stearic acid. The water contact angle of the obtained coating was about 158.7° and the sliding angle was 1.5°. Due to the stable superhydrophobicity and durability of the coating, it can not only resist the pollution of muddy water and particulate contaminants, but also withstand the destruction of high temperature and external mechanical force. And the anti-fouling ability of the coating was evaluated from the force model of the contamination. In addition, the electrochemical measurements indicated that the superhydrophobic sample exhibited excellent anti-corrosion performance in Hank's solution, and the coating could behave as the protective barrier to the substrate. Therefore, the anti-fouling, robust and corrosion-resistant superhydrophobic coating has significant advantages in the protection of Mg alloys.

Abstract:Purpose To improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys, the construction of protective coatings is necessary to extend the service life of Mg-based materials. Design/methodology/approach SiO 2 nanoparticles modified by dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS) were added to the PP and a superhydrophobic Mg(OH) 2 /PP-60mSiO 2 composite coating was fabricated on the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy via the hydrothermal method and subsequently the immersion treatment. Findings Hydrophilic SiO 2 nanoparticles become hydrophobic after modified by DTMS, showing a higher dispersibility in xylene. By incorporating modified SiO 2 nanoparticles into the composite PP coating, the hydrophobicity of the layer was enhanced, resulting in a contact angle of 166.3° and a sliding angle of 3.4°. It also improved the water repellency and durability of the coating. Furthermore, the intermediate layer of Mg(OH) 2 significantly strengthened the bond between the PP layer and the substrate. The Mg(OH) 2 /PP-60mSiO 2 composite coating significantly enhances the corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloy by effectively blocking the infiltration of the corrosion anions during corrosion. The corrosion current density of the Mg(OH) 2 /PP-60mSiO 2 composite coating is approximately 8.23 × 10 –9 A·cm -2 , which can achieve a magnitude three times lower than its substrate, making it a promising surface modification for the Mg alloy. Originality/value The composite coating effectively and durably enhances the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys.

Abstract:Artificial superhydrophobic surfaces have drawn extensive research interest due to their great applicational potential. However, the specialized materials and equipment, multistep preparation processes, and vulnerable rough structures severely restrict their industrial development. In this research, a robust superhydrophobic Ni-B/GO composite coating was fabricated successfully on AZ91 magnesium alloy based on electroless plating (EP), followed by chemical modification with stearic acid ethanol solution. With a water contact angle of 162.8° and a sliding angle of 1.3°, the superhydrophobic coating displayed strong physical/chemical stability and outstanding self-cleaning. Moreover, the superhydrophobic coating revealed excellent corrosion resistance with higher E corr (−0.411 V) and lower i corr (2.14 × 10 −6 A·cm −2 ) in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Also, the R ct value was 2.75 × 10 5 Ω·cm 2 and increased three orders of magnitude compared with the AZ91 Mg. Therefore, this study offers an innovative perspective for fabricating the micro/nano rough structures on magnesium alloy, and the fabrication of superhydrophobic coatings by electroless nickel plating as a low-cost and eco-friendly method will have good industrial application prospects.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) is a vital engineering material owing to its light weight and excellent mechanical properties. However, poor corrosion resistance limits its widely applications as well as its economic value. Hence, surface modification is essential for Mg and its alloys. Among the various coatings, superhydrophobic coating, which is inspired by nature, has received increasing attentions in the past decade. With a water contact angle larger than 150°, superhydrophobic coating can provide sufficient protection for Mg-based substrates. The model of superhydrophobic states and the protection mechanism of superhydrophobic coating are discussed in this review. Especially, the methods for fabricating superhydrophobic coatings on Mg alloys are reviewed. Meanwhile, some functional superhydrophobic coatings on Mg alloys are summarized. Finally, the challenges and future directions are proposed. We hope that this paper will provide a serviceable review for future research on superhydrophobic coatings on Mg alloys.

Abstract:This research presents the development of a surface treatment for AZ91D magnesium alloy that exhibits both superhydrophobic and anticorrosive properties. Initially, a zinc-based phosphate film was deposited on the magnesium alloy surface. Subsequently, a composite coating with superhydrophobic properties was produced by surface modification using a fluorosilane-ethanol solution. The composite coating's microstructure, chemical composition, wettability, self-cleaning, and anti-corrosion properties were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, a contact angle measurement instrument, and an electrochemical workstation. The results demonstrated that the main components of the composite coating were P, O, Zn, F, and C. The static contact angle reached 158°, providing superior self-cleaning and acid and alkali corrosion resistance. Additionally, the charge transfer resistance and coating resistance of the composite coating were significantly higher than those of the magnesium alloy substrate, effectively preventing corrosion and preserving the surface from fouling.

Abstract:To improve the corrosion protection of a nickel-based coating to the underlying magnesium alloy, a superhydrophobic nickel‑phosphorus/nickel/fluorinated polysiloxane (PFDTMS) triple-layer composite coating was successfully designed and fabricated on AZ31 magnesium alloy. The composite coating consists of an electroless-deposited nickel‑phosphorus (ELNi) bottom layer, an electrochemically deposited nickel (ECNi) nano-cone array middle layer, and a PFDTMS top layer via a dehydration-condensation reaction of silane. The surface morphology, structure, and chemical composition of the coating are identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The static water contact angle (WCA) of the composite coating is 153.0° ± 4.6°, attributed to the synergistic effect between nano-cone-shaped nickel and PFDTMS layer. Compared to the untreated magnesium alloy, the corrosion current density of the coating decreases by four orders of magnitude based on the Tafel curve, and the corresponding impedance modulus at low frequency (|Z|ƒ=0.01 Hz) increases by almost four orders of magnitude based on the electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS), demonstrating the superior corrosion protection to magnesium alloy. Lastly, the wetting states of the water droplets on the nickel‑phosphorus layer with and without electrodeposition of nickel nano-cone array and silane modification are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:Mg alloys are considered the most promising engineering materials because of their unique properties. However, the uncontrolled corrosion rate of these alloys limits their applications. Therefore, in this study, a micro-arc oxidation layer was used as a transition layer to "directly" grow a zinc-based metal-organic framework (MOF) composite coating on the surface of a Mg alloy (AZ91D). Herein, the two zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) coatings with different morphologies were separately prepared by homologous metal oxide induction and a one-step in-situ growth method. The superhydrophobic composite coating showed strong hydrophobicity and self-cleaning properties, which could prevent the penetration of water and corrosive ions (Cl−) into the surface of AZ91D. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that the super-hydrophobic composite coatings greatly enhanced the corrosion resistance of AZ91D, and the corrosion current density decreased from 10−5 to 10−9 A/cm2. These results indicate that the ZIF-8 coatings are beneficial for improving the hydrophobicity and enhancing the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys. Therefore, MOF composite coatings provide a new strategy that can be used to prepare multifunctional anticorrosion coatings on metal substrates.

Abstract:A multi-structured composite coating with superhydrophobic properties, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance was prepared on the surface of Mg-9Li-3Al alloy. A porous layer was formed on the substrate surface via micro-arc oxidation. Then, LDH was grown in situ on the MAO coating surface through hydrothermal treatment, sealing the pores in the coating. Finally, HDTMS-SiO2 was assembled on the LDH surface. The SiO2 formed an island-like micro-nano structure, trapping air and creating an "air cushion" on the coating surface,imparting superhydrophobicity (contact angle and sliding angle of 162.1 ± 2.1° and 4.2 ± 0.2°). And the corrosion resistance of the MLS coating is significantly improved the corrosion current density decreased by three orders of magnitude. The incorporation of HDTMS-SiO2 not only improved the corrosion resistance of the coating but also significantly enhanced its wear resistance. During friction, the SiO2 nanoparticles acted as "ball bearings," shifting the friction mode from sliding to rolling. The fragmented SiO2 further served as a solid lubricant, reducing the coefficient of friction to 0.11.

Abstract:In this study, an innovative post-treatment approach for improving the corrosion resistance and hydrophobicity of AZ31 magnesium alloy is introduced. The process involves treating a porous MgO layer, generated through plasma-electrolytic oxidation, with ethanolic solutions of palmitic acid (PA) combined with either iron nitrate or cobalt nitrate. This treatment leads to the formation of PA-Fe and PA-Co, respectively, which effectively seal structural defects, thereby enhancing the corrosion resistance and hydrophobicity of the coating. Remarkably, the PA-Fe salt formation led to a substantial reduction in corrosion rates, with the corrosion current density of PA-Fe reaching 2.43 x 10-10 A/cm2, while PA-Co attained 3.63 x 10-9 A/cm2. Additionally, the coatings exhibited superhydrophobic properties, achieving a ∼ 173° contact angle for PA-Fe and a ∼ 168° contact angle for PA-Co. These findings highlight the long-term potential of this multifunctional post-treatment approach, which effectively seals defects and enhances hydrophobic properties. The innovative technique presented here has diverse applications in challenging environments and shows promise in addressing the corrosion challenges associated with magnesium alloys.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) alloys have many unique properties but suffer from poor corrosion resistance. Effective anti-corrosion strategies are highly desirable for widespread applications of Mg alloys. Bioinspired super anti-wetting coatings are promising for metal protection, but are limited by some issues. Here, we report a bi-layer superamphiphobic coating for efficient protection of Mg alloy by sequentially spray-coating a conventional epoxy anti-corrosion coating and a superamphiphobic coating (perfluorodecyl polysiloxane modified SiO2). The coating showed excellent anti-corrosion performance owing to high superamphiphobicity and "synergistic effect" of the bi-layer structure. The coating retained excellent anti-corrosion performance even after 70 d immersion and 35 d neutral salt spray tests. The long-term anti-corrosion performance is superior to a superhydrophobic coating with similar initial anti-corrosion performance, and better than reported and commercial anti-corrosion coatings. This is because the coating maintained high superamphiphobicity in the corrosion tests owing to high chemical stability of the C-F groups and easy roll off of small NaCl drops. Hence, the contact area and contact time of NaCl on the coating are limited. So, the coating could effectively block diffusion of corrosive substances, providing long-lasting efficient protection. We believe that the strategy will shed a new light on designing novel anti-corrosion coatings.

Abstract:A simple method, involving etching with copper(II) chloride and immersion in stearic acid, a low-surface-energy material, is used to fabricate a super-hydrophobic surface on magnesium alloy. Specimens modified by stearic acid show super-hydrophobicity, with the contact angle reaching 154°. SEM images show petal-shaped ridges, which form a three-dimensional porous structure containing voids that can trap air to form air cushions. These air cushions can prevent droplets from infiltrating the surface, thus leading to the super-hydrophobicity of the coating. Impedance and polarization analyses conducted in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution show that electrochemical properties of the treated Mg alloy are significantly improved compared with the bare alloy, thereby enhancing its corrosion resistance. The super-hydrophobic surface also exhibits an excellent long-term durability in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are susceptible to corrosion, which affects their large-scale applications. The traditional superhydrophobic coatings for corrosion protection of Mg substrates are particularly fragile and easily damaged after prolonged exposure to harsh conditions. Herein, a superhydrophobic ODA/PDA/APT-Ce3+ (OPA-Ce3+) coating with corrosion inhibition and self-healing properties was proposed to prevent corrosion of Mg alloy via combining the cerium nitrate loaded attapulgite (APT), polydopamine (PDA) and octadecylamine (ODA). Once the OPA-Ce3+ coating was corroded, the Ce3+ adsorbed by the APT were released to form insoluble cerium oxide and hydroxides, thereby inhibiting the penetration of the corrosive substance and preventing further occurrence of corrosion. Furthermore, the OPA-Ce3+ coating exhibited favorable self-healing ability against chemical damage, which could recover its superhydrophobicity under solar exposure after O2 plasma etching. The impedance modulus (|Z|0.01 Hz) of OPA-Ce3+ coating was about 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of Mg substrate after being exposed to 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 15 days, showing outstanding long-lasting anticorrosion performance. Moreover, the abrasion resistance and chemical stability of the as-fabricated coating were also excellent. This work is expected to provide a new perspective for preparing cost-effective and durable anticorrosion coating on metal substrates.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) alloys, the lightest metal construction material used in industry, play a vital role in future development. However, the poor corrosion resistance of Mg alloys in corrosion environments largely limits their potential wide applications. Therefore, a micro-arc oxidation/graphene oxide/stearic acid (MAO/GO/SA) superhydrophobic composite coating with superior corrosion resistance was fabricated on a Mg alloy AZ91D through micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technology, electrodeposition technique, and self-assembly technology. The composition and microstructure of the coating were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The effective protection of the MAO/GO/SA composite coating applied to a substrate was evaluated using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests, and salt spray tests. The results showed that the MAO/GO/SA composite coating with a petal spherical structure had the best superhydrophobicity, and it attained a contact angle of 159.53° ± 2°. The MAO/GO/SA composite coating exhibited high resistance to corrosion, according to electrochemical and salt spray tests.

Abstract:It is important to improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy for expanding its application field. Poor durability seriously restricts the practical application of superhydrophobic anti-corrosion coatings. Here, a durable superhydrophobic anti-corrosion coating was prepared on AZ31 Mg substrate via a facile one-step spraying approach. The microscale glass fibers (GF) and nanoscale hydrophobic SiO 2 particles were integrated into the epoxy resin (ER) to construct superhydrophobic composite coating (ER/GF-SiO 2 ). Benefitting from the air cushion and physical barrier effect of superhydrophobic coating, the ER/GF-SiO 2 coating exhibits good reinforced protectives properties. Compared with the AZ31, the corrosion current density of superhydrophobic coating decreased by three orders of magnitude and the low-frequency impedance modulus decreased by one order of magnitude. The ER/GF-SiO 2 coating still maintained a high protective efficiency (89.44 %) after immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solutions for 13 d. The ER/GF-SiO 2 coating shown good mechanochemical durability. The superhydrophobicity can be maintained after 40 m of sandpaper abrasion, 30 min of water impact, 20 min of sand impact, and 80 cycles tape-peeling. Furthermore, the high bond strength of the coating-substrate was verified by energetic analysis of molecular dynamics simulation at a microscopic level. The facile and effective preparation process provides an effective strategy for large-scale industrial production of durable superhydrophobic coating.

Abstract:Formation of super-hydrophobic and corrosion-resistant coatings can provide significant corrosion protection to magnesium alloys. However, it remains a grand challenge to produce such coatings for magnesium-lithium alloys due to their high chemical reactivity. Herein, a one-step hydrothermal processing was developed using a stearic-acid-based precursor medium, which enables the hydrothermal conversion and the formation of low surface energy materials concurrently to produce the super-hydrophobic and corrosion-resistant coating. The multiscale microstructures with nanoscale stacks and microscale spheres on the surface, as well as the through-thickness stearates, lead to the super-hydrophobicity and excellent corrosion resistance of the obtained coating.
