Abstract:The paper first introduces the properties of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) ashes (fly ash and bed ash). Then it describes the new investigations about utilization progress of them. The properties of fly ash and bed ash are not identical, so the progresses of utilization are different, too. Usually, the low carbon and high CaO bed ash can be directly used as material for construction. But the high carbon fly ash must be treated with some process before being utilized, such as hydration for cement, pelletizing for re-burning.

Abstract:On the basis of analyzing the characteristics of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) ash residue a broad overview is given of the recent advances both at home and abroad in the comprehensive utilization of CFB fly ash. Owing to its low carbon content and the presence of a certain hydraulic activity the CFB ash residue can be used directly for the fabrication of cement or building materials. However, the high carbon content and poor hydraulic activity of the fly ash make it necessary to develop some relevant technologies prior to using it. The latter include the pelleting of fly ash for its return burning, the direct sending back of fly ash, and its sending back for desulfurization following its hydration, its use as a raw material for the manufacture of cement and also as soil ameliorative agents, etc.
Effect of Rapid Water-Cooling Process on Desulfurization Performance of CFB Bottom Ash

Abstract:A rapid water-cooling process to desulfurize high temperature CFB bottom ash was designed for the improvement of poor ash utilization. Apparatus and methods for bench-scale rapid water-cooling and desulfurizing study were established and CFB ashes with and without treatment were characterized for f-CaO content, microscopic structure, and desulfurization efficiency. Through theoretical analysis, a hypothesis, that rapid water-cooling could facilitate destroying shell of CaSO4 particles, was proposed and validated experimentally. Results of SEM/EDX and TGA analyses on treated and non-treated ashes showed that calcium on particle surface increased evidently and the calcium recycling rate could increase about 30% post water-cooling treatment. The desulfurization efficiency enhanced continuously with increasing temperature of CFB bottom ash before rapid water-cooling. When hot CFB ash entered into water, ash particles could burst and destroy CaSO4 shell due to strong thermal stress across particle surface. Since higher temperature of CFB ash prior to water-cooling would result in stronger thermal stress, CaSO4 shell were destroyed more easily and desulfurization efficiency became higher. Thus, the rapid water-cooling process would be a new method for regeneration and reuse of CFB ash by improving desulfurization efficiency, which certainly provided practical guidance for engineering applications.

Abstract:The chemical compositions,mineral compositions and thermal behavior of the circulating fluidized bed boiler(CFBB) desulfurated fly ash and pulverized fly ash were investigated.The results showed that the CFBB fly ash manifested as high content of CaO and higher LOI.The major minerals present in the CFBB desulfurated fly ash were quartz,calcite and anhydrite with little mullite.There was a little glass phase in the CFBB desulfurated fly ash.While,the main mineral phases of pulverized fly ash were mullite and quartz.Observed by SEM,CFBB.

Abstract:The content of CaO and unburnt carbon in the fly ash of a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler is very high when the fuel is hard coal. The hydration of water and fly ash can improve the scope of utilization of calcium. The desulphurization characteristics of the hydrated fly ash were examined in TGA and compared with the original fly ash. The results show that the temperature of drying the mixture of fly ash and water does not affect the SO_2 removal appreciably which obviously depends on the molecular ratio of water to calcium. The minimum molecular ratio of water to calcium is (about) 0.4 for a better SO_2 removal. Furthermore, the reactivation mechanism of hydrated fly ash was also discussed by comparing the pore radius and specific surface.

Abstract:With the widespread application of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) combustion technology, the popularity of CFB ash (CFBA) has increased dramatically and its production and large-scale utilization have become increasingly important. In the context of carbon neutrality peaking, using CFBA as a cement admixture as an effective method of resource utilization not only reduces the pressures caused by carbon emissions in the cement industry but also solves the environmental problems caused by CFBA depositing. However, the formation conditions of CFBA are worse than those of traditional pulverized coal boilers. CFB ash is the combustion product of coal at 850 °C–950 °C, and the characteristics of CFBA usually include a loose and porous structure with many amorphous substances. Furthermore, it has the disadvantages of large particle size, high water-demand ratio, and low activity index when it is directly used as a cement admixture. In this study, CFBA (including fly ash (CFBFA) and bottom ash (CFBBA)) produced by a CFB boiler without furnace desulfurization with limestone was used as a cement admixture material, and the effect of grinding on the fineness, water-demand ratio, and activity index of CFBA were studied. The experimental results showed that the grinding effect could significantly reduce the fineness and water-demand ratio of CFBA as a cement mixture and improve the activity index. With the increase in the grinding time, the water-demand ratio of CFBA first decreased and then increased. CFBBA ground for 10 min and CFBFA ground for 4 min can reduce the water-demand ratio of CFBA by up to 105% and increase the compressive strength of 28-day-old CFBA cement by 7.05%. The grinding process can ensure that CFBA meets the Chinese standards for a cement admixture and realize the resource utilization of CFBA.

Abstract:A new cooling method of CFB ash, cooling directly by water, is put forward. Through the study of activation mechanism of CFB ash, the influence of ash activity activated by this method is analyzed. The results indicate that better activity will be obtained by this method with controlled cooled water.

Abstract:The hydraulic property of Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion (CFBC) ashes has a significant impact on their treatment and re-utilization. The studies on several CFBC ashes show that the hydraulic property of them is obvious, and even the hydraulic rate is so fast that CFBC pastes can harden within several hours after molding. The influencing factors of hydraulic property of CFBC ashes are investigated. The results confirm that the content of the free lime and the high-activity components has great influence on the hydraulic property of CFBC ashes.

Abstract:Circulating fluidized bed (CFB)-based coal burning technology is a type of clean coal combustion technology. Owing to its characteristics of low temperature combustion and desulfurization in furnace, the CFB fly ash is quite different from ordinary fly ash. Based on the comprehensive understanding of physical and chemical characteristics of CFB fly ash, this review summarizes the research progress of the application of CFB fly ash in Portland cement, magnesium oxysulfate (MOS) cement, solid-waste–based cementitious material (SWCM), concrete, geopolymer, artificial aggregate, and other building materials. The study shows that CFB fly ash can improve the early physical and mechanical properties and reduce the drying shrinkage properties for cementitious materials. Its unique chemical composition endows it with good application performance in the MOS cement, geopolymer, and SWCM. However, unfavorable characteristics of CFB fly ash, such as loose and porous structure, self-hardening behavior, and expansibility greatly hinder its practical applications in building materials. Therefore, some measures, such as addition of rational water-reducing agent, ultrafine grinding, mixing of ordinary fly ash, controlling the dosage of CFB fly ash, and water-cement ratio, must be taken to improve the negative influence of CFB fly ash on the building materials, in order to expand its application range. This article summarizes the application and research status of CFB fly ash in building materials, aiming at further promoting the research studies on CFB fly ash resource utilization in building materials and improving the efficiency of CFB fly ash resource utilization.

Abstract:The material balance in CFB furnace is important for the performance of the boiler. The bed inventory consists of coal ash and desulfurizing agent. In order to design properly the boiler and auxiliary, the engineers need to know the ash formation characteristics. Generally, the most reliable method to get ash formation data of a coal is to burn it in the real industrial CFB boiler. Due to the high cost and difficulties in sampling in such a test, people have to present other simple method on ash formation. The present investigation is proposing a simple laboratory test procedure to study ash formation by static combustion and sieving. Validation of the method is given.

Abstract:The prospective uses and applications of coal fly ash, bagasse ash and rice husk ash, being generated as a waste, in different types of industries are compared and reviewed. There are several new applications of the ashes, such as raw materials for the preparation of different new materials like glass, hollow micro spheres, cement, ceramics, geopolymers and zeolites, as an adsorbent for different waste water processes, and removal of heavy metals etc. There is a considerable potential for the increased utilization of all such ashes in their raw, additive and refined states for making industrial processes more economical and environment friendly which is strongly suggested.

Abstract:The reasons for excessive SO2 emissions of CFB boilers in China were analyzed,the desulfurization characteristics of limestone were researched and desulfurization system of CFB boilers was modified.The results showed that under the conditions of sulphur content 2.00% and low heat output 22.775 MJ/kg,the desulfurization efficiency was 96.7% and SO2 emission concentration was 161.4 mg/m3,which can meet the national and local SO2 emission requirements.

Abstract:Fly ashes,obtained from three commercial CFB boilers with burning Fujian anthracites,were studied in this paper.By using standard dry-sieving techniques and LOI method,the size distributions of fly ashes and the carbon contents of different size fractions were measured.With the help of SEM and EDX technique,the particle superficial property of fly ash was examined and divided into carbon(soot,or graphite),char,and slag.The residual carbon was enriched from fly ash by the floating-separation technique,and its reactivity was then measured via a non-isothermal TGA experiment.The results was compared with that of its corresponding parent coal.Furthermore,in a laboratory pilot scale fluidized bed furnace,the source of the unburned carbon in the fly ash was explored.It is shown that for CFB boilers using a single cyclone separator,the largest amount of fly ash particles lies in the particle size range from 0.0385mm to 0.0500mm,and so does the unburned carbon fraction;and for CFB boiler equipped with two separators,the largest amount of fly ash particles and unburned carbon fraction lies in a particle size range of 0.0500mm~0.0750mm.There are three kinds of particles existing in fly ashes,which are granular unburned carbon,flocculent slag and char.The reactivity of the unburned carbon in fly ashes is relatively higher than that of its parent feeding coal.It can be induced from this study that the unburned carbon in fly ashes comes primarily from the fines existed in the fed coal and produced by the attrition and fragmentation of coal particles,which cannot be totally burned in the earlier stage of combustion.The clarain,which is of high reactivity and frangible,may be the main originations of unburned carbon in fly ash.
A novel reutilization of ash from biomass gasification process: Feasibility and products improvement analysis

Abstract:Due to the significant growth of the biomass gasification industry, management and disposal of ash has become one of the major environmental issues. This work proposed an innovative strategy that reutilizes ash into gasification process based on its potential catalysis to improve gas products. Reutilization of ash from corn straw (CS) air gasification in a downdraft fixed-bed gasifier was conducted for a feasibility analysis. The effect of ash loading rates (2 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt%, and 20 wt%) on gasification performance were evaluated for an optimal condition analysis. Ash reutilization was proved to be feasible and able to achieve dual objective of improving gas product quality and reducing SO 2 release. Results revealed that loading ash exhibited catalysis promoting CO formation, which correlated with the metal active sites provided by the ash and led to an improvement in dry or/and steam reforming. H 2 production was also improved. These positive effects increased as ash loading rates increased, and maximum CO and H 2 content (19.97 vol% and 15.72 vol%) were achieved at the ash loading rate of 10 wt%. Accordingly, the maximum LHV of gas products (6.47 MJ/Nm 3 ) and the minimum tar content (3.62 g/Nm 3 ) were obtained. While excess ash (loading rate > 10 wt%) showed unsatisfactory performance, even being far behind CS gasification without ash addition. Due to containing CaO, gasification ash showed SO 2 capture capacity by forming CaSO 4 . This reaction competed with the concurrent CaO carbonation, whereas the latter was the priority. The properties of by-products (regenerated ash) were evaluated for overall economic benefits, and the results indicated that it had a high fertilizer potential. These results seemed to be interesting and valuable for ash utilization and effective gasification.

Abstract:This review explores the potential of using different types of ash, namely fly ash, biomass ash, and coal ash etc., as mediums for CO2 capture and sequestration. The diverse origins of these ash types—municipal waste, organic biomass, and coal combustion—impart unique physicochemical properties that influence their suitability and efficiency in CO2 absorption. This review first discusses the environmental and economic implications of using ash wastes, emphasizing the reduction in landfill usage and the transformation of waste into value‐added products. Then the chemical/physical treatments of ash wastes and their inherent capabilities in binding or reacting with CO2 are introduced, along with current methodologies utilize these ashes for CO2 sequestration, including mineral carbonation and direct air capture techniques. The application of using ash wastes for CO2 capture are highlighted, followed by the discussion regarding challenges associated with ash‐based CO2 absorption approach. Finally, the article projects into the future, proposing innovative approaches and technological advancements needed to enhance the efficacy of ash in combating the increasing CO2 levels. By providing a comprehensive analysis of current strategies and envisioning future prospects, this review aims to contribute to the field of sustainable CO2 absorption and environmental management.

Abstract:The applications of waste-derived fuel from paper mills in industrial boilers benefit the reduction of carbon emissions. However, the co-combustion of waste-derived fuel and coal causes significant changes in the characteristics of the ash and brings about the need to find possible means of the utilization of the ash produced. In this work fly, ash samples were collected from circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers co-combusting paper mill wastes with coal and analyzed in detail. The chemical, physical, and thermal characteristics of two different co-combustion fly ashes (CCFA) were investigated using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The chemical composition of CCFA is largely affected by the fuel source type. Thermal analyses of CCFA show that the type of desulfurization system used by the boiler influences the form of sulfate present in the fly ash. The presence of calcium sulfite hemihydrate can cause a high loss in the ignition of CCFA. By comparing the physical requirements specified in the ASTM standard for coal fly ash to be used in concrete, the CCFA produced from paper mill wastes was found to show good potential as supplementary cementitious materials.

Abstract:In China,incineration becomes more and more popular to treat municipal solid waste,during which a lot of fly ash is generated.As hazardous waste,fly ash needs further treatment before landfill or reuse.This paper analyzes the physical and chemical characteristics of fly ash and discusses the issues from conventional treatment process including cement stabilization,chemicals stabilization,acidic solvent extraction and melting.When fly ash is directly used for cement production,concrete and road pavements,it will cause new environmental issues due to heavy metals and salts that fly ash contains.Waterwashing can remove most of the soluble salts and the concentrations of heavy metals in leachate from baked water-washed fly ash will be much lower than that from baked original fly ash.The technology of washing-and-baking has a good promising prospect for fly ash utilization.
