Abstract:Since 1990s the macro-control by government has been promoting the fast,continuous and stable growth of Chinese economy.Meanwhile there is another noticeable phenomenon that,along with the continuously expanding of income difference,the biased structure of income distribution has come into being.Through various index this paper describes the characteristics of the structure of income distribution and its changes,expounds its restraints on the growth of economy and the mechanism it plays.We point out that the measures to improve and harmonize the structure of income distribution will be,in short-term,conducive to enhance the effect of macro-control,and in the long run,will stimulate the accumulation of human capital and improvement of capital structure in the whole society, and thereafter the engine of economic growth will be polished.
China's Unbalanced Economic Growth and National Income Distribution

Abstract:This paper re-measures the labor income share since the reform and opening up,and we find that the labor income share decreases steadily after 1998.The paper also further divides labor into raw labor and human capital.By using the individual level data of UHS,we find the human capital income share has increased rapidly while the raw labor income share decreases steadily during 1988—2007.By using extended MRW growth framework,we find that the movement of China’s national income distribution pattern is closely related to the unbalanced growth feature of factors.The high growth rate of physical and human capital brings upward trend of their factor income share,while the stagnant state of raw labor will bring its share to decrease rapidly.By using various sources of factor growth data from 1995—2007,we confirm the inference of the extended model.And we find that the steady growth of physical capital,the slowing down of the growth rate of human capital,and the negative growth rate of raw labor are the causes of decreasing labor income share.Relate raw labor with minimum wage,we suggest that the unmatched economic contribution and return of rural surplus labor is the key to understand the leaning of national income distribution towards capital.
An Analysis of the Issue of Inter-Industry Income Inequality in China

Abstract:After entering the new century,the inter-industry wage differentials in China is expanding continually.The regression-based Shapley-value decomposition shows that such factors as human capital,ownership system,capital investment and technology have significant influence on the inter-industry income inequality;of which the contribution of human capital to the differentials is about 45%,and the ownership system is more than 20%.Therefore,such administrative measures as equal education,increasing education returns,opening the labor market of monopoly industry,and carrying out labor negotiation system can effectively settle the problem of inter-industry wage differentials.
The Wage Gap Between State And Private Enterprises In China: Counterfactual Analysis Based On Quantile Regression

Abstract:It's widely wondered why workers in state enterprises enjoy higher remuneration. Using a counterfactual analysis based on quantile regression and Chinese household income project survey data (1995-2007), this thesis tries to explore and explain the wage gap between state and private enterprises. The decomposition results show wage gap is mainly caused by ownership segmentation while human capital differences contribute little, but the nonhuman capital traits do work. What's more, it is work experience yields and base pay that play an absolutely dominant role in ownership segmentation effect, of which the asymmetry is due to asymmetries in education return and work experience yields. During 1995 to 2007, the wage gap firstly increases and then narrows significantly at the low tail of wage distribution, the reduction of nonhuman capital traits accounting for the former, and the sharp decline in ownership segmentation accounting for the latter. Reinforcement of segmentation leads to the slight expansion of wage gap at the high tail during 1995 to 2002. However, the wage gap shrinks so little when segmentation lessens during 2002 to 2007, which is because the effect is offset by the relative decline of individual traits including human capital in private enterprises.

Abstract:A comparison of the share of international labor income from 1978 to 2019 indicates that developed countries generally conform to the characteristics of steady economic growth, whereas developing countries such as China do not conform to this trajectory. The relationship between China's labor income share and factor endowment is further explored, revealing obvious U-shaped characteristics. Combined with relevant theories concerning new structural economics, the new structural economic growth model is established on the basis of the time-varying elastic production function model. In contrast to the labor income share the model is found to better reflect the change in China's labor income share. Few scholars have explored changes in labor income share from the perspective of models. The new structural economic growth model proposed in this study can greatly enrich the research in the field.

Abstract:What causes are responsible for China's declining labor income share? We investigate this phenomenon in depth from the standpoint of financial constraints. By summarizing the stylized facts of China's economy, this paper demonstrates that as China's economy transforms, the financial market's imperfections lead to more efficient (non-state-owned) enterprises inclined to use corporate savings for the purpose of "crowding out" workers' remuneration for endogenous financing, resulting in a rising savings rate and a declining share of labor income. On this foundation, we construct a more general theoretical model regarding China's economic transformation, propose research propositions, and conduct an empirical study utilizing the Chinese Industrial Enterprises Database from 1999 to 2007. The findings show a strong negative relationship between the financial market imperfections and the labor income share, with a 1% increase in financial constraints reducing labor income share by 0.051%. The rise in savings as a result of the financial restrictions works as a mediator variable in this process. Furthermore, our prediction for the path of the labor income share suggests that China's savings rate would decline after reaching its peak, while the labor income share will bottom out and rebound by the end of the country's economic transition. This study uses firm-level micro-data to reveal the internal mechanism of financial constraints lowering labor income share, which is a useful supplement to the existing literature. It also provides empirical evidence and policy options for developing countries to reform their financial systems and increase labor income share in the pursuit of sustainable development.

As the characteristics and functions of the basic constitutes are different from each other, the article mainly discusses the obvious salary, then gives the related expression and the chart between salary and its elements. Aiming at the main problems which are average, short-term and single in enterprise salary at present, the author probes that enterprise salary will be market, long-term and diverse under the knowledge economy by applying the salary frame, the theories of stock options and employees' needs.

A New Explanation for Changes in China's Labor Income Share: Capital Heterogeneity

Abstract:In this paper, a two-sector general equilibrium model with Putty-Clay technology is constructed, and the characteristics of capital heterogeneity are depicted in the model in the form of capital goods productivity variance. Through the capital selection mechanism, the impact of capital heterogeneity on labor income share is explored. It is found that the inverted U-trend of relative capital heterogeneity in capital-intensive industries is the cause. Second, the mechanism of capital heterogeneity affecting labor income share lies in the capital goods selection mechanism. With the increase of capital heterogeneity, the investment uncertainty faced by enterprises is strengthened. When choosing capital goods, enterprises will diversify investment and reduce capital intensity. After capital goods are put into production, firms will use high-productivity capital goods and shut down low-productivity capital goods, leading to a decline in capital utilization, the increase in total factor productivity, and the increase in output. Third, in the capital-intensive sector, the increase of capital heterogeneity will reduce, while in the labor-intensive sector, the opposite effect is presented. The new characteristics of Chinese capital and the change of labor income share, and has important policy reference significance for promoting.
Change of Population Age Structure and Labor Income Share in China:Theory and Empirical Analysis

Abstract:This paper tries to give a new explanation,from population age structure perspective to deceasing labor income share in current China.Our explanation is different from the ideas in existing literatures,which focus on the role of industrial structure change,technological progress,globalization,dual economic system,and the fiscal effect.A theoretical model is developed to show that,change of population age structure may affect the individuals’ saving behavior,and thus affect capital intensity,which can make labor income share lower when there is a substitute relation between labor and capital.Empirical investigation is conducted with a panel data set of 29 provinces from 1990 to 2007,and the results confirm that,increasing old dependency and decreasing children dependency are significant factors for decreasing labor income share,even other potential important factors are controlled.

Abstract:This paper tries to give a new perspective to understand the decline of the current labor income share.We study the relationship between international trade,wage rigidities and labor income share under a unified theory framework.A theoretical model is developed to show that,international trade increase the elasticity of substitution between capital and labor at the world level,and wage rigidities can affect the reallocation between sectors,which further deteriorates the impact.Empirical investigation with a panel data set of 29 provinces from 1997 to 2007 confirms the above theoretical expectations that international trade has a significant negative impact on the labor income share and wage rigidities further worsens this effect,even potential important factors are controlled.

Abstract:This paper explores the factors that caused the decrease of China's labor income share from 1995 to 2007,especially focusing on the trade expansion and economic crisis.The results show that trade expansion has significantly increased China's labor income share,while the financial crisis in 1997 didn't exert substantial effect on this mechanism.The empirical analysis testifies the basic conclusions of traditional trade theories.It is found that as the dual conditions for wage flexibility in labor markets are difficult to meet,China's labor income share shows some counter-cyclical characteristics;besides,RMB appreciation and rising labor supply hinder the increase of labor income share.Centering on globalization and dual conditions for wage flexibility,the authors further come up with the suggestions such as adhering to opening up policy,accelerating industrial upgrading and reducing wage rigidity.

Abstract:In recent years, China's labor income share has undergone substantial changes and the evolution of income distribution is inseparable from the process of industrial structural transformation. From the perspective of sectoral heterogeneity, this study develops Ngai and Pissarides’ (2007) model, constructing a multisector dynamic general equilibrium model. We propose that technological progress or capital deepening will promote the flow of production factors among sectors, with the direction dependent on the substitution elasticity between products, sectoral differences in the rate of technological progress, factor output elasticity, and elasticity of factor substitution. This process of factor flow also causes changes in total labor income share, and the direction parallels the labor share of labor-intensive industries. Combining the development data of China's three major industries during different periods, the results demonstrate that in the industrial period, labor flows from the agricultural sector to the industrial sector and the total labor income share decreases; in the postindustrial period, labor flows from the industrial sector to the service sector and the total labor income share increases. The contribution of this study is in presenting a comprehensive and systematic examination of the impact of sectoral heterogeneity on industrial structure transformation and labor income share, which explains the U-shaped trend of China's overall total labor income share and also helps to further understand the structural transformation of the Chinese economy.

Effects of Ownership on Wage and Benefit Income in Chinese Industrial Firms

Abstract:This paper studied the employees' wage and benefit difference among state-owned company,private company,foreign company and also company invested by Hongkong,macao or Taiwai take advantage of the economic census data made in 2004,and we try to find out the reasons which cause the difference.Statistic results shows that:employees from private company have the lowest wage and benefit;employees of state-owned company enjoy lower wage but the benefit is quite well;employees in company invested by Hongkong,Macao or Taiwai get quite higher wage but their benefit only higher than that of private company;employees from foreign company obtain the best wage and benefit level.This study analysis the reasons with the method of multiple linear regression by stata,and finds that companies of different ownership are different among sector and area distribution,firm age,scale,female proportion,union,productivity,concentration of fixed assets,technology content,education level and work experience,those are all affect the wage and benefit.What's more,the reason for the difference between private company and state-owned company is not the same to that between private company and the non-owned companies.

Abstract:Considerable literatures have reached a conclusion of declining share of labor income in recent years from an empirical perspective in China,but few literatures have given a theoretical analysis behind this phenomenon through a mathematical model.This paper proposed and proved creatively Kaldor distribution model with land rent,and found the approaches of solving that phenomenon.With a government controlled variable-rent-in extending Kaldor model,the paper proposed and proved the important proposition that the share of labor income would evolve positive "U" shaped curve as China's economic development,and analyzed the conditions of the positive "U" shaping evolution of wage share in national income,and proposed the policy recommendations to prevent the income distribution gap widen.The author believes that the extending Kaldor model can analyze the relationships between economic growth and income distribution and the dynamic evolution of the income distribution in China.So it is significant especially for the government macro regulation policies.

Abstract:Based on the data from the first national economic census, this paper discusses the basis characteristics of income distribution from the aspects of enterprises and trades. The per capita wage or salary varies greatly with different enterprises; but the distribution of welfare subsidies is more uneven that of wage or salary, which plays a role in widening the income gap. This article also discusses, in the aspects of enterprises (work units) and professions, the mechanism that decides the levels of wages and welfare subsidies, especially deliberates on the effect of the factor of monopoly and that of the ability to make profit on wages or salaries and welfare subsidies. We have found that the degree of monopoly exercises more important effect on the determination of wages and salaries and welfare subsidies than the ability of reaping profits.

Abstract:Through a two-sector model with factor-intensity difference,this paper analyzes the effects on structural change and labor income share of TFP growth rate difference between two sectors,material capital accumulation,Engel effect and sector entry barrier variation.With the condition of capital-deepening and labor-intensive product as the precedence demand,Engel effect decreases labor income share independent of specific value of elasticity of substitution,and this effect asymptotically diminishes.However,the way TFP growth rate difference between sectors,capital accumulation,and sector entry barrier variation affect labor income share depends on the condition the specific value of elasticity of substitution is more or less than one.

Abstract:This paper investigates the change in aggregate labor income share in China since 1995.With provincial GDP by income approach released by NBS,we measure aggregate labor income share in value added at factor cost.The measured labor income share declined by 10.73 percentage points during 1995—2004,of which 5.25 percentage points occured between 2003 and 2004.We estimate the effect of the changes in the accounting method for GDP by income approach in 2004,and find that these changes cause a drop of 6.29 percentage points in the labor share in 2004,more than enough to explain the change in the labor share statistics between 2003 and 2004.For the 1995—2003 period,the structural transformation from agricultural sector to non—agricultural sector and the decreases in sectoral labor income shares respectively account for 3.36 and 2.12 percentage points of decline in aggregate labor income share.Furthermore,around 1.65 percentage points of the decline in sectoral labor income share is accounted for by the industrial sector,of which the restructuring of SOEs,the increase in monopoly power,and other forces including technology change and improvement respectively explain 60%,30% and 10%.

Abstract:The year 1996 was a turning point both in terms of Chinese labor market reform and in China’s economic growth pattern.Before 1996,labor market reform was mainly implemented through adjustment of people’s occupation and income structure.Since 1996, employment restructuring has led to differentiation in terms of employment status.Labor market reform in the former stage resulted in slow growth in wages,whereas reform in the latter stage enhanced economic efficiency.Both stages have enabled the Chinese economy to apply its comparative advantage of low labor cost.Labor market reform has also increased income disparity and,therefore,new challenges are posed in sustaining economic growth. China needs to adjust its development strategies and introduce labor market reform that can improve income equality,so as to achieve sustainable economic development.
