Abstract:To deal with the problems of the disquieting biases between cultures in our times, the author analyzed the multiple horizon character of morality, proposed a four level model of morality. By using this alternative model of ethics, the author exposes the frailties of cultural stereotypes in both the East and the West, arguing that the moral efforts of all nations should be appreciated. The reason that people do not often see this fact comes mainly from their preoccupations with different moral horizons. The dialogue between different moral horizons and hence different cultures will help each side to develop a more adequate value system which can better solve problems decisive for the coexistence in global context.

Abstract:Universalism can be defined as the belief in the universal application of certain knowledge, world-views and value-views. Universalism has often been confused with Occident-centrism, due to the fact that the latter was used to justify the former, which confused the content of a thought with the social condition that gave rise to the thought. For many years, clarifications of this confusion have been made in sociology of knowledge, relativism and skepticism. Yet, the particularistic conclusion thus reached has led to more confusion, namely, that between the intrinsic criterion for truth and the practical application of thought. China, with its long tradition of Sino-centrism, has recently shown a movement towards particularism, characterized by a search for national and cultural superiority by “returning to the source”. In today’s academic circles, some particularist themes are taken for granted, and believed to be true, but cannot be proved with rational examination. The particularistic claims to the “self grounded”, “self-featured” and “self-located” tradition of Chinese culture jointed with the post-modernism, neo-leftist movement of anti-globalization in the West, are not only harmful in practice, but also impotent in theory. The propaganda against the hegemony of Western discourse should be analyzed with questioning which hegemony and whose discourse.

Abstract:Abstract This paper analyzes the political, philosophical, societal, legal, educational, biological, psychological and technological reasons why there is an urgent need for basic intercultural and interfaith ethics in the world and whether it is possible to formulate a valid code of such ethics. It is shown that universal ethics could be founded on natural law, which can be understood in both religious and secular ways. Alternatively, universal ethics could be based on a single supreme principle that is independent of worldview and culture: human dignity. In accordance with these concepts, a minimalist and normative code of essential, self-evident universal ethical principles and norms is proposed. The implementation of universal ethics in society is a long-term political task that could be achieved by including universal ethics in the compulsory school curriculum of all countries and in the UNESCO agenda of Global Citizen Education.

Abstract:The concept of golden mean (GM) has taken a central place in the development of both Chinese and western classical ethics. There is a growing call for universal ethics in contemporary discussions of ethics. It is argued that there are valuable resources to be explored in the classical theory of GM. There are three reasons why GM might attain the status of universal ethics. First, as an ethical resource that can be shared by all cultures, GM has existed in the theorization of classical Chinese and western ethics. Second, GM possesses the characteristics of ethical common sense. In the history of Chinese and western ethics, whenever there is a need to terminate extremism on ethical issues, GM has always served as the best solution. Third, GM suits the need of interaction between different ethical traditions. In theorizing universal ethics, GM serves not only as a moral standard but also a fundamental principle for practice.

Abstract:Through a case analysis of Christianity and Confucianism, this essay argues that if the world’s religions genuinely hope to establish a global ethic by jointly affirming some irrevocable and unconditional ethical directives, each on the basis of their own religious grounds, they should trust in their specific ultimate realities in a universalistic way instead of in a particularistic way; that is, they may not place these ultimate realities above the bottom-line moral principle “respecting everyone’s deserved rights” absolutely, but must assign a prior position to the latter and integrate it with their trust in their specific ultimate realities through a critical self-transformation.

Abstract:On the one hand, Confucianism and Christianity advocate universal love for all humans on the ultimate basis of particular love for parents or for God respectively. On the other hand, they have to sacrifice the former for the latter in cases of conflict since they give top priority merely to the latter. In order to overcome this paradox in theory and realize the ideal of universal love in practice, they should transform their particularistic frameworks into universalistic ones and assign a supreme position to their ideas of universal love for all humans, which imply in a potential way a modern, humanistic principle ‘respect the deserved rights of every human being’.

Abstract:There are two approaches to the understanding of religion: in a narrow sense,religion is considered to be a particular phenomenon of social spiritual life,and in this sense it may be juxtaposed with politics,economics,philosophy,arts and so on;whereas,in a broad sense,religion is understood as the foundation of the entire social cultural life,as the metaphysical root of humanity or the existence of human life.On the basis of these two approaches,there are accordingly two different ways to understand religious ethics.With regard to its individual form,religious ethics refers to a set of ethical norms observed by its believers in religious domain and activities.And if it is considered from their common basis,religious ethics is concerned with a certain pattern of life which has common significance for the existence of human being;it leads the ethical order of social life towards the ultimate value,or the ultimate belief.Therefore,the fundamental question of religious ethics is to investigate the relationship between the ethical order of human existence and its foundation of belief.Specifically speaking,on the one hand it deals with the relationship between the moral order of individual person and the foundation of belief,and on the other hand,it deals with the relationship between social ethical order and the agreement of value.
