A Critique of Pan-Moralization:Putting Morality in Its Right Place

Abstract:In contemporary China,with the social transformation accelerated,the interpersonal relations have been greatly expanded. In particular,the gradual popularization of the Internet and the rapid development in the Internet technology and self-media has brought about tremendous changes in the content and form of interpersonal interactions. Accordingly,the openness,interactivity and heterogeneity of people's social life have been greatly enhanced and there is an explosion of the influence of virtual society formed in the cyberspace on the public sphere. The area which is the first to have surely felt the impact of these changes is morality. It is a common and basic desire for the people in a community to live a moral life so that moral judgments form an important force promoting the social development. Moral criticism is usually the prelude to other criticisms and at the same time becomes the driving force for the pursuit of a purified moral life. However,if the moral judgment goes to the extreme of pan-moralization,many issues outside the sphere of morality will be moralized and the abuse of morality will be inevitable. Therefore,the key to the construction of morality in the new era is to first define the boundaries of morality,i.e. to make an explicit definition of the sphere for people's moral practice. To achieve this purpose,it is necessary to stick to the scientific Marxist concept of moral criticism, make moral criticism scientific and based on the facts,enable the moral criticism to fully play its guiding role, and seek the establishment of the common interest mechanism in a society characterized by different interests and pursuits so as to lay a solid foundation for the reestablishment of moral order.
