Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a highly filtering-tolerant multi-modulus equalization (MMEQ) process for very aggressively spectrum-shaped 9-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation (9-QAM)-like polarization division multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) signal to achieve 400-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) channels on the 100-GHz grid for ultra-long-haul reach and high tolerance of the filter narrowing effect caused by reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs). We successfully transmitted 8 channels 480-Gb/s super-Nyquist (channel occupancy much less than signal baud rate) WDM signals at 100-GHz grid over 25 × 200 km conventional single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) with post Raman amplification and 25 ROADMs at a net spectral efficiency (SE) of 4b/s/Hz, after excluding the 20% soft-decision forward-error-correction (FEC) overhead. The system performance is significantly enhanced by the MMEQ based on 9-QAM-like constellations compared to the conventional 4 point QPSK constellation. A record transmission distance over conventional SMF-28 with a large number of ROADMs is firstly reported on the 400-Gb/s channels at 100-GHz grid.

Abstract:In this paper, we successfully transmit 8 x 520 Gb/s pre-equalized DFT-spread PDM-16QAM orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signal over 840 km SMF with BER under 2.4 x 10(-2). We discuss how to obtain accurate tranceivers' response during pre-equalization for DFT-spread OFDM with coherent detection and we find conventional OFDM symbols training sequences (TSs) outperform DFT-spread OFDM symbols TSs in obtaining channel response for pre-equalization and equalization. Additionally, the optimal IFFT/FFT size is explored for the pre-equalized DFT-spread PDM-16QAM-OFDM transmission systems. Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a coherent transmission system with a high symbol rate using up to 110-GBaud PDM-QPSK signals. Super-Nyquist-filtering technology is used to narrow down the bandwidth of a single channel on a 100-GHz grid. The performance of the high baud rate electronic time division multiplexed-based super-Nyquist-filtered signal is also studied under the aggressive optical filtering elements in multiple reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs) nodes during transmission. We successfully transmit 100-GHz-grid, 20 channel single-carrier 440-Gb/s super-Nyquist 9-QAM-like signal over 3600-km ultralarge effective-area fiber (ULAF) at a high net SE of 4 b/s/Hz (after excluding the 7% hard-decision FEC overhead). The highly filtering tolerant performance of the 9-QAM liked super-Nyquist signal is also experimentally demonstrated. Using this scheme, we then successfully transmit ten channel 440-Gb/s signal over 3000-km ULAF and ten cascaded 100-GHz-grid ROADMs based on the 110-GBaud QPSK. Such signal is coherently detected and processed after a real-time oscilloscope at 160-GSa/s sampling rate with 65-GHz bandwidth.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the coherent transmission system with the highest ETDM-based symbol rate of 128.8-GBaud over record breaking distances. We successfully transmitted single-carrier 515.2-Gb/s PDM-QPSK/9-QAM signals over 10,130km/6,078-km, respectively, over 100km spans of TeraWave SLA + fiber. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest ETDM-based symbol rate reported so far, and the longest WDM transmission distance with single-carrier 400G signals. For the first time, the 515.2-Gb/s single-carrier PDM-QPSK signals in 200-GHz-grid are successfully transmitted over distance above 10,000km in terrestrial transmission environment. We have also demonstrated the transmission of single carrier 128.8-GBaud filtered QPSK signals in 100-GHz-grid over 6,078-km, which has the line spectral efficiency (SE) of 5.152 (b/s/Hz). Abstract:We have realized the first field transmission of 8 × 216.8-Gb/s Nyquist wavelength-division-multiplexing (N-WDM) signals over 1750-km G.652 fiber consisting of 950-km real and 800-km lab fibers with erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)-only amplification. The average loss per span is 21.6 dB. Each channel is modulated with 54.2-Gbaud (216.8-Gb/s) polarization-division-multiplexing carrier-suppressed return-to-zero quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-CSRZ-QPSK) data on a 50-GHz grid giving a record spectral efficiency (SE) of 4 b/s/Hz. Digital post filtering and 1-bit maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) are introduced into the offline digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver to suppress noise, linear crosstalk and filtering effects. We have also investigated the co-transmission of 200 G PDM-CSRZ-QPSK and 200 G PDM 16-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation (PDM-16 QAM) signals on a 50-GHz grid, and found that PDM-CSRZ-QPSK signals have better bit-error-rate (BER) performance for both back-to-back and 700-km transmission cases. Meanwhile, PDM-16 QAM signals are subject to larger crosstalk from the neighboring Nyquist QPSK channels.

Abstract:Employing raised-cosine pulse-shaped polarization- division-multiplexing (PDM) 36 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) format and standard single-mode fiber (SMF-28), 16 x 107-Gb/s PDM-36QAM signals in 12.5-GHz spacing have been realized to transmit over 400 km with a hybrid erbium-doped fiber amplifier and Raman amplification. The spectral efficiency (SE) for the 100 Gb/s is up to 8 b/s/Hz. This is the longest transmission for 100 Gb/s with an SE of 8 b/s/Hz.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission of single-carrier 400G based on orthogonal optical time-division multiplexed (Orth-OTDM) 80-GBaud polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 8QAM signal. The 80G-Baud 8QAM signal is generated using the OTDM method based on two tributaries of time-domain orthogonal pulses with 40-GBaud 8QAM signals. Full-band coherent detection is utilized with digital signal processing based on a single broadband receiver for the 80GBaud signals. The WDM transmission performances of single-carrier 400G signals within different channel-grid and carrier spacing are also investigated. Finally, four 400G channels, each carrying an 80-Gbaud PDM-8QAM signal within 100, 80 and 75-GHz grid, are successfully transmitted over 1600, 800, and 400-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with EDFA-only amplification below the pre-FEC BER of 2.4x10-2 (20% soft-decision FEC), respectively. The achieved spectral efficiency (SE) for the 400G channel can be 4, 5 and 5.33 bit/s/Hz, respectively.
