Abstract:Gold-based catalysts are promising in CO preferential oxidation (CO-PROX) reaction in H 2 -rich stream on account of their high intrinsic activity for CO elimination even at ambient temperature. However, the decrease of CO conversion at elevated temperature due to the competition of H 2 oxidation, together with the low stability of gold nanoparticles, has posed a dear challenge. Herein, we report that Au-Cu bimetallic catalyst prepared by galvanic replacement method shows a wide temperature window for CO total conversion (30–100 °C) and very good catalyst stability without deactivation in a 200-h test. Detailed characterizations combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveal that the synergistic effect of Au-Cu, the electron transfer from Au to Cu, leads to not only strengthened chemisorption of CO but also weakened dissociation of H 2 , both of which are helpful in inhibiting the competition of H 2 oxidation thus widening the temperature window for CO total conversion.

Abstract:The trace amount of CO in H-2-rich gas poisons Pt electrode when it is adopted as feedstock for proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells. Preferential oxidation of CO (PROX) is a promising approach to selectively oxidize the trace amount of CO while keeping H-2 unoxidized. Catalyst plays important roles in PROX. To date, enormous catalysts have been developed for PROX. Summarizing the catalysts developed for PROX and unveiling the reaction mechanism could definitely advance this research field. Herein, in this review, according to the nature of the active sites on the catalysts, we classify the catalysts into group VIII metal-based catalyst, group IB metal-based catalysts, group VIII-group IB bimetallic catalysts, transitional metal oxide catalysts as well as others, describe the progress of the catalysts in PROX in the latest five years, and extract the underlying reaction mechanism, with the aim to provide guidance for the rational design of efficient catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Nanoarchitecture alloy materials represent a class of highly efficient and stable catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis. An intrinsic challenge has been seeking catalysts that can fulfill activity, selectivity, and durability requirements in the reaction. Herein, we exploit PtCu nanocage catalysts constituted by the PtCu alloy nanoparticles. The nanocage PtCu catalyst with cuboctahedron morphology is highly active for complete CO conversion within a temperature window of 115–155 °C in the preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX), attributable to a substantial change in the surface electronic properties due to the transfer of more electrons from Cu to Pt atoms. The two pathways for CO oxidation based on the analysis of experimental data are clarified on the surface of PtCu alloys and on the Cu+ derived from the reduction of oxidized Cu2+ species in the H2-rich reaction stream during CO-PROX. A time-on-stream isothermal experiment for 40 h reveals that the nanocage PtCu catalyst with cuboctahedron morphology possesses good resistance to H2O inhibitor.

Abstract:A series of Au/CuOx-TiO2 catalysts with various Cu/Ti atomic ratios were prepared by deposition-precipitation method. The catalysts were characterized by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The preferential oxidation of CO in H-2 stream (PROX) on these catalysts was carried out in a fixed bed microreactor with a gas mixture (CO:O-2:H-2:He = 1.33:1.33:65.33:32.01 by volume ratios) was fed with a space velocity of 30000 ML/(g.h). Au/CuOx-TiO2 with various Cu/Ti atomic ratios showed similar gold particle size (2.3-2.5 nm). The gold in the starting material was almost totally loaded on the CuOx-TiO2 support at pH = 7. Au/CuOx-TiO2 catalysts with gold content of 1 wt % and calcined at 180 degrees C had superior catalytic activity and selectivity for CO oxidation at temperature of 80 degrees C. Au/CuOx-TiO2 (Cu/Ti = 4.8/95.2) had it CO conversion of 100% at 80 degrees C, and CO selectivity reaches 68%. Gold particles were well dispersed and stable on the support. Even after PROX reaction at 80 degrees C for it long time, most of the particles still maintained at similar to 2.4 nm. The CO conversion slightly decreased from 100% to 95%, and CO selectivity was nearly the same. Au/CuOx-TiO2 is a highly effective and thermally stable catalyst for PROX reaction compared with Au/TiO2 catalyst.

Abstract:Au@CuxO core-shell structure nanoparticles (NPs) have been designed and used for CO catalytic combustion to improve Au catalysts' activity and stability and decrease the cost. The catalytic performance of Au@CuxO/Metal Oxide has been affected a lot by the Au NPs' nature, the core-shell structural perfection, the shell thickness and the support type. It proved that Au particles prepared with neutral aqueous solution (pH = 7) is more feasible to be used as the active component of combustion catalysts. The suitable amount of Cu(NO3)(2) used for Au@CuxO preparation has led to the formation of more core-shell structure NPs with thin shell thickness thus lead to high activity. Among all the oxides studied here, Co3O4 is the best catalyst support. Both the catalytic activity and stability of Au@CuxO/Co3O4 are high. The Au content in the catalysts is only 0.11 wt% and the 90% CO conversion temperature is 132 degrees C. CO can even combust on Au@CuxO/Co3O4 at room temperature with 51% conversion and without any loss after 72-h reaction.

Abstract:Environmental pollution, especially air pollution, has become a critical issue requiring prompt resolution. Herein, we have synthesized a novel catalyst composed of nano-octahedral γ-Fe2O3 in situ loaded with Au nanoparticles through dealloying Al-Fe-Au alloy ribbons combined with calcination. The formation mechanism of this unique morphology was analyzed, and the catalyst's performance was evaluated through CO oxidation reactions. The test results indicate that the Au/γ-Fe2O3 catalyst can completely catalyze CO at 50 °C, and exhibits excellent stability and resistance to H2O and CO2 toxicity even under harsh testing conditions. Systematic characterization results reveal that the exceptional performance of the catalyst can be attributed to several key factors. These include the large specific surface area, well-defined nanoporous structure, efficient transfer of free electrons at the interface facilitated by the strong interactions between Au and the γ-Fe2O3 support, as well as the high concentration of oxygen vacancies and surface-active oxygen species present. Additionally, the potential conversion pathways of CO over the Au/γ-Fe2O3 catalyst were elucidated, revealing that they follow the Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Mars-van Krevelen mechanisms under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. This study is expected to provide novel insights into the green synthesis of highly active and stable nanoporous catalysts.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide preferential oxidation (PROX) in an H-2-rich stream represents one promising H-2 purification technology but requires the development of active and selective catalysts to make the technology viable. We conducted density functional theory simulations of CO PROX catalysis on model Pt alloy systems to establish correlations between the catalyst parameters and the catalytic properties, which validated E-A,E-COOR and E-A,E-HOR as descriptors for CO oxidation and H-2 oxidation kinetics, Delta E-A as a descriptor for CO PROX selectivity, and epsilon(d) as a catalyst parameter descriptor for the activation energy barriers. We discovered an interesting compromising relationship between the CO PROX activity and selectivity properties. Pt-Ni and Pt-Mn nanoparticle catalysts were selected for synthesis on the basis of the computational data and tested for their properties, which matched well with the DFT calculations and verified the effectiveness of the computational findings. The use of computation-guided methods and the discovered catalyst parameter property relationships would establish a rational strategy to aid catalyst development and foster CO PROX research.

Abstract:Surface Fe ensembles, surface alloyed Fe atoms, and subsurface Fe species have been identified at Pt surfaces on the basis of studies in Fe-Pt(111) model systems and supported Pt-Fe nanoparticles (NPs). The surface Fe ensemble changes to ferrous oxide and forms a highly active and stable "FeO-on-Pt" structure in preferential oxidation of CO in the presence of H-2 (PROX), which, however, gets fully oxidized in CO oxidation in the absence of H-2 (COOX) and becomes inactive in the reaction. The surface alloyed Fe remains stable under the H-2-rich and O-2-rich reaction conditions, which are active for both PROX and COOX reactions. Accordingly, highly efficient Pt-Fe catalysts for the PROX and COOX reactions can be prepared via mild reduction and/or acid leaching.

Abstract:CuO–CeO2 is prepared by coprecipitation and ethanol washing and characterized using BET, HR-TEM, XRD and TPR techniques. The results show that CuO–CeO2 is nanosized (rTEM=6.5nm) and possesses high surface area (SBET=138m2g−1). Furthermore, some lattice defects in the surface of CuO–CeO2 are found, which are beneficial to enhance catalytic performance of CuO–CeO2 in preferential oxidation of CO in excess hydrogen (PROX). Consequently, the nanostructured CuO–CeO2 exhibits perfect catalytic performance in PROX. Namely, CO content can be lowered to less than 100ppm at 150°C with 100% selectivity of O2 in the presence of 8% CO2 and 20% H2O at 120,000mlgcat-1h-1.

Abstract:CO preferential oxidation (PROX) in excess hydrogen is a promising strategy for CO removal in hydrogen-rich reformate. However, the CO conversion and CO2 selectivity in the PROX reaction dramatically decrease with rising temperature, resulting in a major challenge to complete CO removal across a wide temperature window. Here, we developed a photoexcited deposition of metal oxide (PDMO) method based on surface plasmonic resonance of Au nanoparticles, which can tune the interfacial properties by depositing lead oxide at the Au-TiO2 interface. The interface modified Pb3O4/Au/TiO2 catalyst can successfully eliminate CO in a wide temperature range (70°C–140°C) and exhibit superior stability in the PROX reaction. Further experiments demonstrated that the improved PROX performance is due to the severely depressed hydrogen oxidation through simultaneously inhibiting the activation of hydrogen and oxygen. The results further reveal that the interface of Au/TiO2 is the superactive but non-selective site for H2 and CO oxidation.

Abstract:Developing efficient and stable catalysts for preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX) within a wide temperature window is significant for the industrial hydrogen resource purification process. Herein, dual promoters of Fe and K were deliberately introduced to the mordenite supported Pt catalyst for optimizing the adsorption behaviors of reactants in CO-PROX. The optimal 1Pt0.1 K/Fe-MOR catalyst can achieve 100% CO conversion and 60–70% CO2 selectivity (the ratio of CO/O2 is 1:1) under the realistic application temperature range (130–200 °C), and remains catalytically stable during 65 h testing at 140 °C. A combination of detailed characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) simulations show that Fe species can avoid the co-adsorption of O2 on the Pt sites by providing more oxygen vacancy to activate O2, while K species will further enhance the adsorption of CO and repulse the adsorption of H2 on Pt surface. Therefore, the optimized adsorption of CO, O2 and H2 results in a total CO conversion and high CO2 selectivity in high temperature range.

Abstract:Preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX) has tremendous significance in purifying hydrogen for fuel cells to avoid catalyst poisoning by CO molecules. Traditional powder catalysts face numerous challenges, including high pressure drop, aggregation tendency, hotspot formation, poor mass and heat transfer efficiency, and inadequate thermal stability. Accordingly, ceramic monolithic catalysts, known as their excellent thermal stability, high surface area, and superior mass and heat transfer characteristics, are gaining increasing research attention. This review examines recent studies on ceramic monolithic catalysts in CO-PROX, placing emphasis on the regulation of active sites (e.g., precious metals like Pt and Au, and non-precious metals like CuO and CeO2), monolith structures, and coating strategies. In addition, the structure–catalytic performance relationships, as well as the potential and limitations of different ceramic monolithic catalysts in practical application, are discussed. Finally, the challenges of monolithic catalysts and future research prospects in CO-PROX reactions are highlighted.

Abstract:Preferential oxidation of CO in excess H-2 (PROX) has been extensively explored for selective removal of CO with minimum H-2 consumption to prevent CO poisoning of the Pt-based anode in a proton-exchange-membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Unmodified platinum group metal catalysts are widely used for this reaction, yet they still show unsatisfying activity for CO oxidation at low temperatures, because their stronger adsorption of CO would poison the active site. Cu-based catalysts are alternatives, but they suffer from structural instability. Therefore, designing a more efficient catalyst for PROX is highly required. In this work, a bimetallic Cu/Rh catalyst is designed that facilitates significantly weakening the CO poisoning effect due to its comparable adsorption strengths of O-2 and CO. As compared to the dissociative mechanism, CO oxidation via the OCOO-mediated associative mechanism on this catalyst is found to be more favorable, and the barriers of the steps in the catalytic cycle are modest, suggesting a high low-temperature activity for CO oxidation. Moreover, it is found that a Cu/Rh catalyst exhibits lower selectivity for H-2 oxidation than that for CO oxidation. Additionally, the systematic studies of the surface segregation of Cu/Rh induced by the adsorption of species in PROX show that a Cu/Rh catalyst exhibits a good structural stability under the typical PROX conditions. These results demonstrate that the designed bimetallic Cu/Rh catalyst is promising for the PROX reaction at low temperatures.
Highly Dispersed Copper Oxide Clusters As Active Species in Copper-Ceria Catalyst for Preferential Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide

Abstract:Copper-ceria is one of the very active catalysts for the preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO-PROX) reaction, which is also a typical system in which the complexity of copper chemistry is clearly exhibited. In the present manuscript, copper-ceria catalysts with different Cu contents up to 20 wt % supported on CeO2 nanorods were synthesized by a deposition-precipitation (DP) method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by various structural and textural detections including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Vis-Raman, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ex situ/in situ X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), and temperature-programmed reduction by hydrogen (H-2-TPR). It has been confirmed that the highly dispersed copper oxide (CuOx) clusters, as well as the strong interaction of Cu-[O-x]-Ce structure, were the main copper species deposited onto the ceria surface. No separated copper phase was detected for both preoxidized and prereduced samples with the Cu contents up to 10 wt %. The fresh copper-ceria catalysts were pretreated in either O-2- or H-2-atmosphere and then tested for the CO-PROX reaction at a space velocity (SV) of 60 000 mL center dot h(-1.)g(cat)(-1). The prereduced 5 and 10 wt % Cu samples exhibited excellent catalytic performance with high CO conversions (>50%, up to 100%) and O-2 selectivities (>60%, up to 100%) within a wide temperature window of 80-140 degrees C. The in situ XAFS technique was carried out to monitor the structural evolution on the copper-ceria catalysts during the PROX experiments. The X-ray absorption near edge spectra (XANES) profiles, by the aid of linear combination analysis, identified the oxidized Cu(II) were the dominant copper species in both O-2- and H-2-pretreated samples after CO-PROX at 80 degrees C. Furthermore, the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) fitting results, together with the corresponding H-2-TPR data distinctly determined that the highly dispersed CuOx (x = 0.2-0.5) cluster, other than the Cu-[O-x]-Ce (x = 0.7-3.2) structure, were the crucial active species for the studied CO-PROX reaction.

Abstract:In this work, nanoparticles of Pt–Ni alloy were supported on a new kind of composite which composed of graphene sheets and meso-macroporous SiO2, and the composite supported Pt–Ni catalyst was applied to the preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX) in H2-rich gases. The bimetallic Pt–Ni alloy catalyst was characterized by using techniques of SEM, TEM, XRD, TPR, CO chemisorptions and XPS. The catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance for CO-PROX with high activity at low temperature, high selectivity and very good stability, which was attributed to the following characters of the catalyst: Pt–Ni nanoparticles were in alloy state and highly dispersed, Pt–Ni nanoparticles were preferentially loaded on the surface of graphene sheets, and the meso-macroporosity of the composite markedly improved the mass transferring ability. This is a case study, and this kind of catalysts can be extended to other gas–solid catalytic reactions.

Abstract:The preferential oxidation of CO in H 2 is attractive for the removal of trace amounts of CO to meet the requirement of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) application. The key is to design highly effective catalysts that work well in a wide range of low temperatures. Here, the recent progress in Au and Pt group metal catalysts for the PROX reaction is summarized, covering those with single-atom and cluster dispersed metal species with remarkable performance. Firstly, the progress of some representative catalysts is overviewed, with an emphasis on the strategies for improving low-temperature activity, selectivity, and stability. Then, special attention is focused on the key parameters affecting performance in the PROX reaction. Moreover, the reaction mechanisms in terms of adsorption and activation of reactants are discussed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities are offered for guiding the design of advanced noble metal catalysts toward the PROX process.

Abstract:Nanoporous Cu-O system catalysts with different oxidation states of Cu have been fabricated through a combination of dealloying as-milled Al66.7Cu33.3 alloy powders and subsequent thermal annealing. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have been used to characterize the microstructure and surface chemical states of Cu-O catalysts. The peculiar nanoporous structure can be retained in Cu-O catalysts after thermal treatment. Catalytic experiments reveal that all the Cu-O samples exhibit complete CO conversion below 170 degrees C. The optimal catalytic performance could be achieved through the combination of annealing in air with hydrogen treatment for the Cu-O catalyst, which shows a near complete conversion temperature (T-90%) of 132 degrees C and an activation energy of 91.3 KJ mol(-1). In addition, the present strategy (ball milling, dealloying and subsequent thermal treatment) could be scaled up to fabricate high-performance Cu-O catalysts towards CO oxidation.

Abstract:The global hydrogen production exceeds 50 million tons annually from catalytic reforming of hydrocarbons and accounts for 2–5% of global energy consumption. The hydrogen product generally contains 0.5∼1 vol. % of CO, which must be removed for certain industrial applications. Preferential oxidation (PROX) of CO is regarded as a promising and cost-effective method for hydrogen purification and potentially applicable for new generation fuel cell vehicles. In this work, bifunctionally faceted Pt/Ru nanoparticle catalysts are designed and fabricated via selective atomic layer deposition (ALD), that enables an unprecedented capability of tuning nanoparticles' structure-property relationship for PROX in H2. Pt atomic layers are selectively deposited onto (001) facets of Ru, while leaving neighboring Ru surfaces exposed. By modulating the extent of electronic donation with varied Pt coating configuration, it is demonstrated that the bifunctional catalyst with a single monolayer (ML) Pt on Ru shows the optimal activity and selectivity. The enhancement of PROX performance originates from the elimination of the competitive CO adsorption on Pt, where a neighboring exposed Ru surface could readily provide highly active sites for O2 dissociation.
