Abstract:The trace amount of CO in H-2-rich gas poisons Pt electrode when it is adopted as feedstock for proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells. Preferential oxidation of CO (PROX) is a promising approach to selectively oxidize the trace amount of CO while keeping H-2 unoxidized. Catalyst plays important roles in PROX. To date, enormous catalysts have been developed for PROX. Summarizing the catalysts developed for PROX and unveiling the reaction mechanism could definitely advance this research field. Herein, in this review, according to the nature of the active sites on the catalysts, we classify the catalysts into group VIII metal-based catalyst, group IB metal-based catalysts, group VIII-group IB bimetallic catalysts, transitional metal oxide catalysts as well as others, describe the progress of the catalysts in PROX in the latest five years, and extract the underlying reaction mechanism, with the aim to provide guidance for the rational design of efficient catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX) has tremendous significance in purifying hydrogen for fuel cells to avoid catalyst poisoning by CO molecules. Traditional powder catalysts face numerous challenges, including high pressure drop, aggregation tendency, hotspot formation, poor mass and heat transfer efficiency, and inadequate thermal stability. Accordingly, ceramic monolithic catalysts, known as their excellent thermal stability, high surface area, and superior mass and heat transfer characteristics, are gaining increasing research attention. This review examines recent studies on ceramic monolithic catalysts in CO-PROX, placing emphasis on the regulation of active sites (e.g., precious metals like Pt and Au, and non-precious metals like CuO and CeO2), monolith structures, and coating strategies. In addition, the structure–catalytic performance relationships, as well as the potential and limitations of different ceramic monolithic catalysts in practical application, are discussed. Finally, the challenges of monolithic catalysts and future research prospects in CO-PROX reactions are highlighted.

Abstract:Developing effective ways to promote the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) still remains a great challenge due to the interdependence multiple steps procedure. Herein, we design a two action sites strategy to break interdependence restriction to reduce the calculative overpotential. Density functional theory demonstrated that the introduced oxygen vacancies could accelerate the oxidation of H2O by induced an extra reaction step, corresponding deprotonation of H2O* decomposed into two separated reaction steps: H2O* ↔ (HO + H)* and (HO + H)*↔ HO* + H+ + e-. Meanwhile, experimental observations confirm that two action sites promote the Vo-CoOOH OER performance including a lower onset potential, a lower Tafel slope and an incremental Turnover frequency (TOF) from 0.01 to 0.04s−1. Through this work, a viable design principle for, but not limited to, CoOOH OER catalyst is proposed: injected hole can activate the synergistic catalytic effect of two actions sites to accelerate the water oxidation.
Computation-Guided Development of Platinum Alloy Catalyst for Carbon Monoxide Preferential Oxidation

Abstract:Carbon monoxide preferential oxidation (PROX) in an H-2-rich stream represents one promising H-2 purification technology but requires the development of active and selective catalysts to make the technology viable. We conducted density functional theory simulations of CO PROX catalysis on model Pt alloy systems to establish correlations between the catalyst parameters and the catalytic properties, which validated E-A,E-COOR and E-A,E-HOR as descriptors for CO oxidation and H-2 oxidation kinetics, Delta E-A as a descriptor for CO PROX selectivity, and epsilon(d) as a catalyst parameter descriptor for the activation energy barriers. We discovered an interesting compromising relationship between the CO PROX activity and selectivity properties. Pt-Ni and Pt-Mn nanoparticle catalysts were selected for synthesis on the basis of the computational data and tested for their properties, which matched well with the DFT calculations and verified the effectiveness of the computational findings. The use of computation-guided methods and the discovered catalyst parameter property relationships would establish a rational strategy to aid catalyst development and foster CO PROX research.

Abstract:Both structural and adsorbed surface hydroxyl groups in solid materials are important carriers for oxygen species transport. The role of identifiable structural hydroxyl groups in catalytic reactions, however, is often underestimated. Here, we propose a synergistic hydroxyl reaction mechanism on Pt 1 Fe 0.33 /HNTs catalyst in CO-PROX reaction, which is critical to reveal the new way of oxygen transport in the oxidation reaction. Particularly, the Pt 1 Fe 0.33 nanoparticles (NPs) have been confined in the cavity of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) to activate structural hydroxyl groups linked to the Al VI via a two-step reduction treatment. The activated structural hydroxyl groups exhibit sensitivity to CO, as revealed by in situ DRIFTS and MS data. The experimental and DFT data demonstrate that the cooperation of Pt, Fe, and hydroxyl sites in the active units on Pt 1 Fe 0.33 /HNTs can induce a synergistic participation of structural and adsorbed hydroxyl groups in CO oxidation through the formate pathway. In such catalytic process, the oxygen mobility is dominated by oxygen-containing hydroxyl species rather than reactive oxygen species. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of hydroxyl groups in catalysis and lays the foundation for establishing a comprehensive oxidation reaction mechanism in the future.

Abstract:Carbon black (CB) supported PtAg non-alloy bimetal catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and evaluated for CO preferential oxidation in excess H2 (PROX). PtAg/CB catalysts exhibited an evident synergistic effect. The catalyst support selection is crucial to the synergistic effect. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning TEM energy dispersive X-ray analysis (STEM-EDX) characterization indicates no alloy was formed over the PtAg/CB catalyst after activation in H2 at 500 degrees C for 2 h. However, temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) and XRD data evidenced strong interactions between platinum and silver, as a result of their simultaneous reduction and high temperature activation. The Pt?Ag interactions result in high catalytic performance and the synergistic effects. This is another example of model catalyst research translating to real world catalysis. PtAg non-alloy catalysts may also be effective in eliminating or alleviating catalyst poisoning by CO-like intermediates in direct liquid fuel cells.
Synergistic metal-support interaction promoting the formation of oxygen vacancies and their role in CO-PROX over CuO/NiO-CeO 2 catalyst

Abstract:A series of x/yCuO/NiO-CeO 2 catalysts with a constant Cu+Ni molar content and low copper loading of 1 wt% had been prepared by the step-by-step impregnation method and characterized by various techniques (XRD, N 2 -adsorption/desorption, HR-TEM, H 2 -TPR, Raman and XPS). CO preferential oxidation (CO-PROX) under H 2 /CO 2 -rich conditions had been performed. Experimental results indicated that the catalytic activity of CuO/CeO 2 could be enhanced by substituting partial Cu with Ni, and with a Cu/Ni molar ratio of 1/2, the highest catalytic performance was observed. Under the conditions of temperature 130 °C, space velocity 20266 mL·g cat −1 ·h −1 and oxygen excess coefficient 1.2, the 1/2CuO/NiO-CeO 2 catalyst gave rise to a maximum CO conversion of about 94.8%. The 1/2CuO/NiO-CeO 2 catalyst also exhibited good catalytic stability up to 100 h, showing that this catalyst system could be further developed for potential commercial application. Combined with the detailed characterization data, it had been proposed that there was a synergistic interaction among Cu, Ni and CeO 2 in the catalyst, generating more oxygen vacancies than the binary CuO/CeO 2 and NiO/CeO 2 catalysts. With a Cu/Ni molar ratio of 1/2, the formed ternary CuO/NiO-CeO 2 catalyst had the highest content of oxygen vacancies, which was believed to play a crucial role in the CO-PROX reaction.

Abstract:The CO preferential oxidation reaction (CO-PROX) is an effective strategy to remove residual poisonous CO in proton exchange membrane fuel cells, in which oxygen vacancies play a critical role in CO adsorption and activation. Herein, a series of CuO/CeO2 catalysts derived from Ce-MOFs precursors were synthesized using different organic ligands via the hydrothermal method and the CO-PROX performance was investigated. The CuO/CeO2-135 catalyst derived from homophthalic tricarboxylic acid (1,3,5-H3BTC) exhibited superior catalytic performance with 100 % CO conversion at a relatively low temperature (T100% = 100 °C), with a wide reaction temperature range and excellent stability. The superior catalytic properties were attributed to the structural improvements provided by the 1,3,5-H3BTC precursors and the promotional effects of oxygen vacancies. Additionally, in-situ Raman spectroscopy was performed to verify the dynamic roles of oxygen vacancies for CO adsorption and activation, while in-situ DRIFTS analysis revealed key intermediates in the CO-PROX reaction, shedding light on the mechanistic aspects of the catalytic process. This work not only demonstrates insights into the effective CuO/CeO2 catalysts for CO preferential oxidation, but also provides a feasible way to synthesize MOF-derived catalysts.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide, one of the major pollutants in the air, is mainly produced due to the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels such as coal and oil. Among all the techniques developed for removing CO, catalytic oxidation has been considered one of the most effective approaches, and the commonly used catalysts include metal oxides and noble metals. Noble metal attracted extensive attention due to its good catalytic performance at low temperatures and high resistance to poisoning. The review summarizes the recent advances of noble metals including Pt, Pd, Au, Ru, Rh, and Ir in CO oxidation. The effect of support, metal doping, the particle size of noble metals, and the hydroxyl groups on CO oxidation is discussed. Besides, the metal-support interaction on the stability and activity is also involved in this review. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of supported noble metal catalysts in practical CO oxidation are proposed.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed catalysts have been shown highly active for preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide in the presence of excess hydrogen (PROX). However, their stability has been less than ideal. We show here that the introduction of a structural component to minimize diffusion of the active metal center can greatly improve the stability without compromising the activity. Using an Ir dinuclear heterogeneous catalyst (DHC) as a study platform, we identify two types of oxygen species, interfacial and bridge, that work in concert to enable both activity and stability. The work sheds important light on the synergistic effect between the active metal center and the supporting substrate and may find broad applications for the use of atomically dispersed catalysts.

Abstract:Developing efficient and stable catalysts for preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX) within a wide temperature window is significant for the industrial hydrogen resource purification process. Herein, dual promoters of Fe and K were deliberately introduced to the mordenite supported Pt catalyst for optimizing the adsorption behaviors of reactants in CO-PROX. The optimal 1Pt0.1 K/Fe-MOR catalyst can achieve 100% CO conversion and 60–70% CO2 selectivity (the ratio of CO/O2 is 1:1) under the realistic application temperature range (130–200 °C), and remains catalytically stable during 65 h testing at 140 °C. A combination of detailed characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) simulations show that Fe species can avoid the co-adsorption of O2 on the Pt sites by providing more oxygen vacancy to activate O2, while K species will further enhance the adsorption of CO and repulse the adsorption of H2 on Pt surface. Therefore, the optimized adsorption of CO, O2 and H2 results in a total CO conversion and high CO2 selectivity in high temperature range.

Improvement of Catalytic Performance of Preferential Oxidation of CO in H2-rich Gases on Three-Dimensionally Ordered Macro- and Meso-Porous Pt–Au/CeO2 Catalysts

Abstract:Three-dimensionally ordered macro- and mesa-porous (3DOM) M/CeO2 (M = Pt, Au and Pt-Au) catalysts supported with different noble metal nanoparticles of Pt, Au and Pt-Au alloy were synthesized by thermal decomposition of cerium nitrate precursor using the close packed structures of PS colloidal crystals as templates. The obtained 3DOM M/CeO2 catalysts possess well-defined 3DOM skeletons composed of ultrafine CeO2 nanoparticles. The macroporous CeO2 skeletons contain the mesoporous walls possessing the nanopores of similar to 3-4 nm and the noble metal nanoparticles of Pt, Au, and Pt-Au alloy with the grain sizes of similar to 5.0 nm homogenously dispersed. The catalytic performance of CO preferential oxidation (PROX) in H-2-rich gases on 3DOM Pt/CeO2, Au/CeO2, and Pt-Au/CeO2 catalysts were systematically studied. The superior catalytic performance with 90% CO conversion and 83% CO2 selectivity are realized on 3DOM 1 wt.% Pt1Au1/CeO2 catalyst at 80 degrees C under the weight hourly space velocity of 30,000 mL g(-1) h(-1). Moreover, the 3DOM 1 wt.% Pt1Au1/CeO2 catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic stability maintaining 90% CO conversion and 56% CO2 selectivity even after the test period of 260 h under the same flow rate. The three-dimensionally ordered macro- and mesa-porous skeletons, the synergistic effect due to the formation of Pt-Au alloy, and the strong interaction of Pt-Au alloy nanoparticles with CeO2 supports are identified to be beneficial to the improvement of catalytic activity and stability of CO PROX. The obtained 3DOM Pt-Au/CeO2 catalysts may be potential candidates with the improved catalytic performance of CO PROX reaction in H-2-rich gases for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) applications. Abstract:Atomic Pt studded on cobalt oxide is a promising catalyst for CO preferential oxidation (PROX) dependent on its surface treatment. In this work, the CO PROX reaction mechanism on Co3O4 supported single Pt atom is investigated by a comprehensive first-principles based microkinetic analysis. It is found that as synthesized Pt1/Co3O4 interface is poisoned by CO in a wide low temperature window, leading to its low reactivity. The CO poisoning effect can be effectively mitigated by a H2 prereduction treatment, that exposes Co ∼ Co dimer sites for a noncompetitive Langmuir-Hinshelhood mechanism. In addition, surface H atoms assist O2 dissociation via "twisting" mechanism, avoiding the high barriers associated with direct O2 dissociation path. Microkinetic analysis reveals that the promotion of H-assisted pathway on H2 treated sample helps improve the activity and selectivity at low temperatures.
Staged oxidation of hydrocarbons with simultaneously enhanced conversion and selectivity employing O2 as oxygen source catalyzed by 2D metalloporphyrin-based MOFs possessing bimetallic active centers

Abstract:With the objective to realize efficient and selective oxidation of hydrocarbons with O2 to partial oxidation products, 2D metal–organic frameworks (2D MOFs) possessing bimetallic active centers (Co&Cu, Co&Zn, Cu&Zn) were prepared to construct confined catalytic domains and staged oxidation sites. All the 2D MOFs were characterized systematically through FT-IR, XPS, PXRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, BET and TG analyses. Applied to the partial oxidation of C-H bonds with O2, superior catalytic performance was observed in the employment of 2D MOF Co-TCPPCu as catalyst, in which both of the conversion and selectivity towards partial oxidation products were enhanced simultaneously. The superior performance of oxidation system employing Co-TCPPCu as catalyst was mainly because of the decreased disordered autoxidation at lower reaction temperature, suppressed free radical diffusion in the confined catalytic domains of Co-TCPPCu, and enhanced oxidation of C-H bonds with oxidation intermediate product R-OOH catalyzed by second metal center Cu(II). For the important and classical oxidation of cyclohexane in chemical industry, the conversion was increased from 4.39% to 5.31% with the selectivity towards partial oxidation products being enhanced from 85% to 95% compared with homogeneous metalloporphyrin T(4-COOCH3)PPCo as catalyst. The staged oxidation paths and catalytic mechanism were also explored systematically through control experiments, free radical capture and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses. This work presented an intelligent and valuable reference not only for the selective and efficient oxidative functionalization of hydrocarbons with O2 in both of the industrial application and academic research, but also for other important chemical transformations involved in free radicals.

Abstract:CO preferential oxidation (PROX) in excess hydrogen is a promising strategy for CO removal in hydrogen-rich reformate. However, the CO conversion and CO2 selectivity in the PROX reaction dramatically decrease with rising temperature, resulting in a major challenge to complete CO removal across a wide temperature window. Here, we developed a photoexcited deposition of metal oxide (PDMO) method based on surface plasmonic resonance of Au nanoparticles, which can tune the interfacial properties by depositing lead oxide at the Au-TiO2 interface. The interface modified Pb3O4/Au/TiO2 catalyst can successfully eliminate CO in a wide temperature range (70°C–140°C) and exhibit superior stability in the PROX reaction. Further experiments demonstrated that the improved PROX performance is due to the severely depressed hydrogen oxidation through simultaneously inhibiting the activation of hydrogen and oxygen. The results further reveal that the interface of Au/TiO2 is the superactive but non-selective site for H2 and CO oxidation.

Abstract:CO preferential oxidation in H2-rich stream (CO-PROX) is a critical reaction for H2 purification in emerging hydrogen economy including advanced fuel cell technology. Au-based catalysts are viewed as some of the most promising catalysts but achieving high catalytic efficiency and selectivity is still challenging. Defect engineering is deemed as a powerful strategy to improve the intrinsic catalytic activity. Herein, CeFeOx-supported Au catalysts with controllable oxygen vacancy (Ov) concentrations were obtained and applied to CO-PROX. The results of characterizations showed that the Ovs were preferentially generated in conjunction with Au single atoms (SAs) rather than nanoparticles (NPs), which further modulated the surface electronic properties via surplus electrons in Ovs and enhanced the interfical interaction between Ovs and Au SAs. The CO-PROX results indicated that the reduced Au SA catalyst (Au1/CeFeOx-R) with the highest Ov concentration completely converted CO at temperature of 80 degrees C with relatively low reactivity towards H2 oxidation. The remarkable catalytic activity and selectivity were attributed to the modified electronic properties by Ovs that played a bridging role in electron transfer and accelerated reaction process, as well as the coupling effect of Ovs and Au SAs that enhanced the dissociative adsorption of O2 and the adsorption-oxidation of CO, resulting in a reduced reaction energy barrier and making CO oxidation more favorable than H2 oxidation. This research opens up an alternative strategy to simultaneously stabilize and activate single-atom catalysts.
Preferential oxidation of CO in excess hydrogen over a nanostructured CuO–CeO2 catalyst with high surface areas

Abstract:CuO–CeO2 is prepared by coprecipitation and ethanol washing and characterized using BET, HR-TEM, XRD and TPR techniques. The results show that CuO–CeO2 is nanosized (rTEM=6.5nm) and possesses high surface area (SBET=138m2g−1). Furthermore, some lattice defects in the surface of CuO–CeO2 are found, which are beneficial to enhance catalytic performance of CuO–CeO2 in preferential oxidation of CO in excess hydrogen (PROX). Consequently, the nanostructured CuO–CeO2 exhibits perfect catalytic performance in PROX. Namely, CO content can be lowered to less than 100ppm at 150°C with 100% selectivity of O2 in the presence of 8% CO2 and 20% H2O at 120,000mlgcat-1h-1.
Promoting effect of reduction-oxidation strategy on the Co3O4/γ-Al2O3 catalysts for propane total oxidation

Abstract:Co3O4/γ-Al2O3 is one of the most active and commonly used catalysts for environmental pollution control. However, the strong Co-Al interaction has seriously deteriorated their catalytic performance, and even affected the promotion effect of an effective improvement strategy. In our previous report, by reasonably adjusting the interaction, the reduction-oxidation (RO) strategy greatly improved its performance. Herein, by constructing a series of 10Co3O4/γ-Al2O3 of enhanced interaction, and treating them by RO strategy, we found that RO strategy improved the activity of all 10Co3O4/γ-Al2O3 for model reaction-propane total oxidation to varying degrees, but the improvement degree is closely related with the interaction strength. In 10CoAl-(500–700) with relatively strong interaction, the improvement was more remarkable than that of 10CoAl-(300–400) with weak interaction and 10CoAl-800 with strong interaction. The maximum reduced values of T50 and T90 are 129 °C and 162 °C over 10CoAl-700, 28 °C and 57 °C higher than that in our previous work. The biggest promoting effect of 10CoAl-(500–700) is the formation and redispersion of active cobalt species, where the latter contributed to the significant increase of 10CoAl-700. The more active Co species produced play a major role in increasing the activity of 10CoAl-(300–400), while weakening of Co-Al interaction slightly increases the activity of 10CoAl-800. This work provided deep insight into the performance improvement of catalysts for air pollution control, and will shed light on catalyst regeneration, design and optimization in the environmental field.
