Abstract:As the electron transfer to CO2 is a critical step in the activation of CO2 , it is of significant importance to engineer the electronic properties of CO2 hydrogenation catalysts to enhance their activity. Herein, we prepared Pt3 Co nanocrystals with improved catalytic performance towards CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Pt3 Co octapods, Pt3 Co nanocubes, Pt octapods, and Pt nanocubes were tested, and the Pt3 Co octapods achieved the best catalytic activity. Both the presence of multiple sharp tips and charge transfer between Pt and Co enabled the accumulation of negative charges on the Pt atoms in the vertices of the Pt3 Co octapods. Moreover, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy confirmed that the high negative charge density at the Pt atoms in the vertices of the Pt3 Co octapods promotes the activation of CO2 and accordingly enhances the catalytic activity.

Abstract:Pt nanoclusters (Pt-C) on the surface of ceria-zirconia solid solutions exhibit superior low-temperature CO oxidation activity compared to Pt single atoms (Pt-1). However, the redispersion behavior of the Pt-C to Pt-1 lowers the efficiency of CO Oxidation. In this work, the stable surface hydroxyl groups were constructed by high-temperature hydrothermal aging treatment. Specifically, the Pt-1 catalyst (Pt/CZOe-SA) prepared by atom trapping was subjected to high-temperature hydrothermal treatment to obtain the stable Pt-C catalyst (Pt/CZOe-HT) with in-situ formed Pt-C. The experimental results showed that Pt-C with 2-3 nm size could achieve excellent low-temperature activity and thermal stability. In addition, the ab initio molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations revealed the specific evolution process of dynamic dispersion for Pt-C with or without hydroxyl groups from the femtosecond scale, suggesting that the hydroxyl groups limited the dispersion of Pt-C in the form of "energy fence". The hydrothermal treatment not only introduced high-temperature stable hydroxyl groups to improve the stability of the in-situ formed Pt-C, but also optimized the ratio of Pt-1 and Pt-C, and then enhanced the low-temperature activity by the synergistic effect between Pt-1 and Pt-C. The present work can provide theoretical guidance for developing high-performance and high-stability Pt-based catalysts.

Abstract:A nanostructural catalyst with long-term durability under harsh conditions is very important for an outstanding catalytic performance. Herein, a new ultrastable PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocatalyst was explored to improve the catalytic performance of carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation by virtue of the surface active lattice oxygen derived from strong metal-support interactions. Such a structure can overcome the issues of Co3O4-SiO2 inactivation by water vapor and the Pt inferior activity at low temperature. Further, Co3O4-SiO2 nanosheets endow superior structure stability under high temperatures of up to 800 °C, which gives long-term catalytic cyclability of PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocomposites for CO oxidation. Moreover, the large specific surface areas (294 m2 g-1) of the nanosheet structure can expose abundant surface active lattice oxygen, which significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of CO oxidation at 50 °C over 30 days without apparent aggregation of PtCo nanoparticles after 20 cycles from 50 to 400 °C. It can be expected to be a promising candidate as an ultrastable efficient catalyst.
Catalytic performance and characterization of Al2O3-supported Pt–Co catalyst coatings for preferential CO oxidation in a micro-reactor

Abstract:Platinum–cobalt (Pt–Co) catalyst coatings are studied for preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide (PROX) in hydrogen-rich gas streams. Experimental results show a role for cobalt in improving catalytic activity. The most active catalyst coating can decrease carbon monoxide concentrations from 1% to a value of less than 10ppm for GHSV values ranging from 40,000 to 120,000mlg−1h−1. This catalyst coating can work at a wide window of operation in terms of temperature. Transmission electron microscopy, selected-area electron diffraction, and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy show that the addition of Co forms Pt3Co intermetallic compounds and slightly increases the average particle size. In situ laser Raman spectroscopy reveals the co-existence of Co metal and its oxides on the catalyst surface, due to gradual oxidation of Co by gas phase oxygen within the initial stage of the PROX reaction. The promotional effect of Co during PROX is confirmed and ascribed to this Pt3Co intermetallic compound and the synergetic effect of Co0 and Cox+. The high accessibility of the reactant to Pt3Co species appears favorable and crucial for PROX.
Bifunctional CO Oxidation over Mn-mullite Anchored Pt Sub-Nanoclusters Via Atomic Layer Deposition.

Abstract:CO oxidation is a widely used model system for understanding fundamental aspects of heterogeneous catalysis. While platinum (Pt) continues to be a reference material for CO oxidation catalysis, poisoning of Pt catalysts presents a critical issue that blocks reaction sites and impedes subsequent reaction steps. Fabrication of CO poison-free Pt catalysts remains a great challenge due to its CO-philic nature. Herein, we report a Pt based catalyst to effectively tackle CO poisoning by tightly anchoring Pt sub-nanoclusters onto Mn-mullite oxide (SmMn2O5) via atomic layer deposition. Superior CO oxidation activity has been observed with a significantly lowered light-off temperature and apparent activation energy. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy analysis, oxygen isotope experiments and density functional theory calculations confirm that the low-temperature activity originates from active oxygen atom sources at the bifunctional interface structure.
Selective Passivation of Pt Nanoparticles with Enhanced Sintering Resistance and Activity Toward CO Oxidation Via Atomic Layer Deposition

Abstract:A selective atomic-layer-deposition method is developed to decorate platinum (Pt) nanoparticles (NPs) with nickel oxides (NiOx), resulting in greatly improved catalytic performance. During the initial growth stage, NiOx can be selectively deposited on the low coordinated sites of Pt NPs. Selectivity is realized through intrinsic binding energy differences of nickel (Ni) precursor on Pt sites, which has been confirmed by Fourier transform infrared characterizations and density functional theory simulations. The NiOx/Pt/Al2O3 catalysts show enhanced activity toward CO oxidation, which is mainly due to the highly active metal oxide interfaces created. More importantly, the sintering resistance of the composite NiOx/Pt/Al2O3 catalysts has been improved significantly, which can be attributed to the stabilization of volatile atoms at low coordinated sites and the strong metal oxide interaction that anchors Pt NPs. This study reveals that selective passivation is an effective method to simultaneously enhance the catalytic activity and stability.

Abstract:Exploring the state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts has been a general concern for sustainable and clean energy. Here, Pt-embedded CuO x-CeO2 multicore-shell (Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS) composites are fabricated at room temperature via a one-pot and template-free procedure for catalyzing CO oxidation, a classical probe reaction, showing a volcano-shaped relationship between the composition and catalytic activity. We experimentally unravel that the Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites are derived from an interfacial autoredox process, where Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are in situ encapsulated by self-assembled ceria nanospheres with CuO x clusters adhered through deposition/precipitation-calcination process. Only Cu-O and Pt-Pt coordination structures are determined for CuO x clusters and Pt NPs in Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS, respectively. Importantly, the close vicinity between Pt and CeO2 benefits to more oxygen vacancies in CeO2 counterparts and results in thin oxide layers on Pt NPs. Meanwhile, the introduction of CuO x clusters is crucial for triggering synergistic catalysis, which leads to high resistance to aggregation of Pt NPs and improvement of catalytic performance. In CO oxidation reaction, both Ptδ+-CO and Cu+-CO can act as active sites during CO adsorption and activation. Nonetheless, redundant content of Pt or Cu will induce a strongly bound Pt-O-Ce or Cu-[O x]-Ce structures in air-calcinated Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites, respectively, which are both deleterious to catalytic reactivity. As a result, the composition-dependent catalytic activity and superior durability of Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites toward CO oxidation reaction are achieved. This work should be instructive for fabricating desirable multicomponent catalysts composed of noble metal and bimetallic oxide composites for diverse heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:A facile and effective in situ encapsulation‐oxidation strategy is adopted for constructing a coupling catalyst composed of atomically dispersed Pt‐doped Co3O4 spinel nanoparticles embedded in polyhedron frames for robust propane total oxidation at low temperature. This study adopts a facile and effective in situ encapsulation‐oxidation strategy for constructing a coupling catalyst composed of atomically dispersed Pt‐doped Co3O4 spinel nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in polyhedron frames (PFs) for robust propane total oxidation. Benefiting from the abundant oxygen vacancies and more highly valent active Co3+ species caused by the doping of Pt atoms as well as the confinement effect, the optimized 0.2Pt‐Co3O4 NPs/PFs catalyst exhibits excellent propane catalytic activity with low T90 (184 °C), superior apparent reaction rate (21.62×108 (mol gcat−1 s−1)), low apparent activation energy (Ea = 17.89 kJ mol−1), high turnover frequency ( 811×107 (mol gcat−1 s−1)) as well as good stability. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations indicate that the doping of Pt atoms enhances the oxygen activation ability, and decreases the energy barrier required for CH bond breaking, thus improving the deep oxidation process of the intermediate species. This study opens up new ideas for constructing coupling catalysts from atomic scale with low cost to enhance the activation of oxygen molecules and the deep oxidation of linear short chain alkanes at low temperature.

Abstract:Despite the maximum atom-utilization efficiency and remarkable activity of single-atom catalysts, further improvement of catalytic activity can be obtained by the synergistic effect of single atoms and nanoclusters in some catalytic systems. Herein, CeFeOx-supported Pt single atoms coupling with subnanometric clusters (Pt1-Ptn) structures are developed via a facile strategy. They are applied as the highly efficient catalysts for the preferential oxidation of CO in H2-rich stream (CO-PROX), which achieve complete elimination of CO at low temperature of 50 degrees C, with a wide operating temperature window and extraordinary stability for over 500 h without noticeable deactivation. The exceptional performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of distinctive Pt1-Ptn structures, which couple the benefits of Pt single atoms and subnanometric clusters in a remarkable way. The disadvantages of single Pt species catalysts, such as sensibility to strong adsorption of CO or reduced lattice oxygen reactivity due to excessive coordination, can be well mitigated. The results of detailed characterizations and density functional theory calculations confirm that the unique structures possess moderate adsorption strength for CO and create abundant active interfacial oxygen species, because of the absence of bulk metallic Pt0 and appropriate coordination to lattice oxygen, which synergistically facilitate the catalytic performance.

Abstract:The shell-thickness effect of Pd@Pt core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) towards the preferential oxidation of CO in the presence of excess H-2 (PROX) was investigated. Atomically controllable Pd@Pt core-shell nanoparticles were fabricated by using an area-selective atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. A linear growth rate of Pt on a Pd surface monitored with in situ quartz crystal microbalance indicated that the shell thickness could be controlled by varying the number of ALD cycles. The core-shell Pd@ Pt NPs showed better activity and selectivity than monometallic NPs. The catalyst with a monolayer Pt shell showed optimal performance and minimal Pt loading. The mechanism of the Pt shell on Pd core catalyzed PROX reactions was studied by DFT simulations. The energy barriers to CO oxidation significantly decreased upon coating the catalyst with Pt, which led to enhanced activity and selectivity, and Pd/Pt-1 (monolayer) showed the lowest barrier.

Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the active sites in heterogeneous catalysts is extremely important in the development of effective catalysts. In general, it is difficult to identify the catalytically active sites due to their structural complexity, including the size and specific atomic configurations. In this paper, we prepare different Pt species (single atoms, fully exposed clusters, and nanoparticles) on a nanodiamond/graphene (ND@G) hybrid support to understand their evolution in structure for low-temperature CO oxidation. Remarkably, the atomically dispersed and fully exposed Pt clusters with an ensemble of a few Pt atoms showed the maximum atom utilization of low-coordinated metal sites. As determined by a catalytic performance evaluation, detailed characterizations, and theoretical calculations, the 0.5 wt % Pt n /ND@G catalyst showed a catalytic performance for CO oxidation at low temperature superior to those of single-atom and nanoparticle catalysts, which was attributed to the weakened CO adsorption and facilitated O2 dissociative adsorption on these atomically dispersed and fully exposed Pt cluster catalysts.

Abstract:An effective approach for increasing the Noble metal-utilization by decorating the atomic Pt clusters (1 wt.%) on the CoO2@SnPd2 nanoparticle (denoted as CSPP) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is demonstrated in this study. For the optimum case when the impregnation temperature for Co-crystal growth is 50 °C (denoted as CSPP-50), the CoPt nanoalloys and Pt-clusters decoration with multiple metal-to-metal oxide interfaces are formed. Such a nanocatalyst (NC) outperforms the commercial Johnson Matthey-Pt/C (J.M.-Pt/C; 20 wt.% Pt) catalyst by 78-folds with an outstanding mass activity (MA) of 4330 mA mgPt−1 at 0.85 V vs. RHE in an alkaline medium (0.1 M KOH). The results of physical structure inspections along with electrochemical analysis suggest that such a remarkable ORR performance is dominated by the potential synergism between the surface anchored Pt-clusters, CoPt-nanoalloys, and adjacent SnPd2 domain, where Pt-clusters offer ideal adsorption energy for O2 splitting and CoPt-nanoalloys along with SnPd2 domain boost the subsequent desorption of hydroxide ions (OH−).

Abstract:Nanoarchitecture alloy materials represent a class of highly efficient and stable catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis. An intrinsic challenge has been seeking catalysts that can fulfill activity, selectivity, and durability requirements in the reaction. Herein, we exploit PtCu nanocage catalysts constituted by the PtCu alloy nanoparticles. The nanocage PtCu catalyst with cuboctahedron morphology is highly active for complete CO conversion within a temperature window of 115–155 °C in the preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX), attributable to a substantial change in the surface electronic properties due to the transfer of more electrons from Cu to Pt atoms. The two pathways for CO oxidation based on the analysis of experimental data are clarified on the surface of PtCu alloys and on the Cu+ derived from the reduction of oxidized Cu2+ species in the H2-rich reaction stream during CO-PROX. A time-on-stream isothermal experiment for 40 h reveals that the nanocage PtCu catalyst with cuboctahedron morphology possesses good resistance to H2O inhibitor.

Abstract:Platinum-based catalysts are critical to several chemical processes, but their efficiency is not satisfying enough in some cases, because only the surface active-site atoms participate in the reaction. Henceforth, catalysts with single-atom dispersions are highly desirable to maximize their mass efficiency, but fabricating these structures using a controllable method is still challenging. Most previous studies have focused on crystalline materials. However, amorphous materials may have enhanced performance due to their distorted and isotropic nature with numerous defects. Here reported is the facile synthesis of an atomically dispersed catalyst that consists of single Pt atoms and amorphous Fe2O3 nanosheets. Rational control can regulate the morphology from single atom clusters to sub-nanoparticles. Density functional theory calculations show the synergistic effect resulted from the strong binding and stabilization of single Pt atoms with the strong metal-support interaction between the in situ locally anchored Pt atoms and Fe2O3 lead to a weak CO adsorption. Moreover, the distorted amorphous Fe2O3 with O vacancies is beneficial for the activation of O-2, which further facilitates CO oxidation on nearby Pt sites or interface sites between Pt and Fe2O3, resulting in the extremely high performance for CO oxidation of the atomic catalyst.
Electrochemical Synthesis of Monodispersed and Highly Alloyed PtCo Nanoparticles with a Remarkable Durability Towards Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:PtM (M = transition metals) alloys are currently the most convincing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts. Although appealing, uneven particle size distribution inevitably occurs because of large mismatch of reduction thermodynamics and kinetics between Pt and M precursors, and stringent synthetic conditions. An electrodeposition strategy in N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) was applied to fabricate PtCo/C electrocatalysts. The coordination between DMF and Pt and Co precursors greatly narrow their deposition potential gap to promote alloying. DMF selectively adsorbs on Pt (111) facets, which helps to expose more PtCo (111) facets to provide a high ORR activity, and greatly benefits the high uniformity of particle sizes to ensure a remarkable durability.The specific activity (SA) of as-optimized PtCo-1.8/C is more than 5 times that of commercial Pt/C, and shows almost no change after accelerated degradation test (ADT). Density functional theory (DFT) also indicates that the sample with surface Pt:Co ratio of 1:1 promises the best catalytic activity.

Abstract:Noble metal/transition metal (hydr) oxide interfaces are often highly active catalytic sites for many oxidation reactions. One of the challenges in such catalyst systems especially in high-temperature reactions is the lack of an effective mechanism to stabilize the catalysts against sintering over time and to maintain the metal/oxide interfaces. Herein, we report an alloying-dealloying process for the production of ultrafine Pt/FeOx nanoconjugates (similar to 1.8 nm) with confinement in silica nanoshells for effective stabilization. The synthesis started with coating of ultrasmall Pt/Fe precursor nanoparticles in reverse micelles by a microporous silica shell, which served as a nanoreactor to allow the subsequent transformation of the precursor nanoparticles into the target Pt/FeOx nanoconjugates. Thanks to the ultrasmall size of the nanoconjugates and their effective protection by the silica shells, the resulting Pt/FeOx@SiO2 yolk/shell nanospheres showed high catalytic activity and remarkable durability in preferential CO oxidation in H-2 (PROX). This synthesis strategy may represent a general approach in rational design of highly stable catalysts with complex nanostructures for a broad range of catalysis.

Abstract:Fine-tuning the dispersion of active metal species on widely used supports is a research hotspot in the catalysis community, which is vital for achieving a balance between the atomic utilization efficiency and the intrinsic activity of active sites. In this work, using bayerite Al(OH)(3) as support directly or after precalcination at 200 or 550 degrees C, Pt/Al2O3 catalysts with distinct Pt dispersions from single atoms to clusters (ca. 2 nm) were prepared and evaluated for CO and NH3 removal. Richer surface hydroxyl groups on AlOx(OH)(y) support were proved to better facilitate the dispersion of Pt. However, Pt/Al2O3 with relatively lower Pt dispersion could exhibit better activity in CO/NH3 oxidation reactions. Further reaction mechanism study revealed that the Pt sites on Pt/Al2O3 with lower Pt dispersion could be activated to Pt-0 species much easier under the CO oxidation condition, on which a higher CO adsorption capacity and more efficient O-2 activation were achieved simultaneously. Compared to Pt single atoms, PtOx clusters could also better activate NH3 into -NH2 and -HNO species. The higher CO adsorption capacity and the more efficient NH3/O-2 activation ability on Pt/Al2O3 with relatively lower Pt dispersion well explained its higher CO/NH3 oxidation activity. This study emphasizes the importance of avoiding a singular pursuit of single-atom catalyst synthesis and instead focusing on achieving the most effective Pt species on Al2O3 support for targeted reactions. This approach avoids unnecessary limitations and enables a more practical and efficient strategy for Pt catalyst fabrication in emission control applications.

Abstract:A facile one-step co-precipitation method has been applied for the synthesis of a Pt decorated octahedral Fe3O4 catalyst. The simple addition of a Pt(4+) and Fe(2+) mixture into a KOH solution leads to the simultaneous formation of an octahedral Fe3O4 and in situ reduction of Pt(4+). HAADF-STEM analysis demonstrates the good dispersion of the Pt species on the Fe3O4 (111) plane, and the resulting material exhibits excellent catalytic activity for CO oxidation under moisture conditions. The inevitably existing moisture contributes to the formation of reaction intermediate [COOH] and hence promotes the catalytic activity, which has been proved through in situ DRIFTS analysis.
