Abstract:In order to eliminate boron loss and potential isotopic fractionation during chemical pretreatment of natural samples with complex matrices, a three-column ion-exchange separation/purification procedure has been modified, which ensures more than 98% recovery of boron from each step for a wide range of sample matrices, and is applicable for boron isotope analysis by both TIMS and MC-ICP-MS. The PTIMS-Cs2BO2(+)-static double collection method was developed, ensuring simultaneous collection of (133)Cs2(11)B(16)O2(+)(m/z 309) and (133)Cs2(10)B(16)O2(+) (m/z 308) ions in adjacent H3-H4 Faraday cups with typical zoom optics parameters (Focus Quad: 15 V, Dispersion Quad: -85 V). The external reproducibilities of the measured (11)B/(10)B ratios of the NIST 951 boron standard solutions of 1000 ng, 100 ng and 10 ng of boron by PTIMS method are ±0.06‰, ±0.16‰ and ±0.25‰, respectively, which indicates excellent precision can be achieved for boron isotope measurement at nanogram level boron in natural samples. An on-peak zero blank correction procedure was employed to correct the residual boron signals effect in MC-ICP-MS, which gives consistent δ(11)B values with a mean of 39.66±0.35‰ for seawater in the whole range of boron content from 5 ppb to 200 ppb, ensuring accurate boron isotope analysis in few ppb boron. With the improved protocol, consistent results between TIMS and MC-ICP-MS data were obtained in typical geological materials within a wide span of δ(11)B values ranging from -25‰ to +40‰.

Abstract:A static double-collector system for accurate, precise, and rapid boron isotope analysis has been established by employing a newly fixed Faraday H3 and H4 cup enabling simultaneously collected Cs2BO2(+) ion beams (m/z = 308 and 309) on a Finnigan-MAT Triton thermal ionization mass spectrometer of boron (Triton B). The experimental result indicated that Cs2BO2(+) ion beams (m/z = 308 and 309) were simultaneously collected using a fixed Faraday H3 and H4 cup without using the "Zoom Quad" function and reduced accelerating voltage. Furthermore, the method enabled the measurement of samples containing as little as 20 ng of boron. An analysis of the National Institute of Standards and Technology standard reference material (NIST SRM) 951 standard showed external reproducibility (2RSD) of ±0.013‰, ± 0.013‰, and ±0.019‰ for 100, 50, and 20 ng of boron, respectively. The present method of static multicollection of Cs2BO2(+) ions is applicable to a wide field of boron isotopic research that requires high precision and accuracy to analyze samples with low boron concentrations, including pore fluids, foraminifera, rivers, rainwater, and other natural samples.

Abstract:Boron isotope ratios (δ11B) are used across the Earth Sciences and are increasing analyzed by Multi‐Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MC‐ICPMS). Accurate δ11B MC‐ICPMS analysis requires boron purification from the sample matrix using ion‐exchange column chromatography. However, the traditional gravity‐drip column method is time‐consuming and prone to airborne contamination due to its long duration and open resin surface. To address these issues, we designed a novel, simple, and reliable column chromatography technique called "peri‐columns." This method uses a peristaltic pump to generate vacuum on a commonly used column set up. This method uses sealed collection beakers and does not require solutions to pass through pump tubing, minimizing contamination. The duration is reduced by eight‐fold, processing 12 samples in just 1.5 hr. It also yields low and consistent total procedural blanks, averaging 11 pg. The efficiency and efficacy of this method were tested by repeated boron purification from calcium carbonate and high‐sodium matrices with international and in‐house reference materials. The results matched those obtained using the gravity column method and fell within our laboratory long‐term and international certified values. The mean δ11B and 2SD (standard deviation) of repeatedly processed NIST 8301f were 14.57 ± 0.26‰ (n = 31), NIST 8301c was 24.19 ± 0.33‰ (n = 10), STAiG‐F1 was 16.20 ± 0.26‰ (n = 13), and seawater was 39.52 ± 0.32‰ (n = 10). All the components of our techniques are commercially available, and it is easily adaptable to other laboratories and isotope systems.

Abstract:Due to the small relative mass difference between m/z 308 and m/z 309,simultaneous data collection was not possible using conventional multi-collection mass spectrometers.To conduct multi-collector measurements of m/z 308(133Cs210BO2+) and m/z 309(133Cs211BO2+),the Faraday cups were configured to measure m/z 308 and m/z 309 array with zoom optics.We utilize thermal ionization mass spectrometry(Trion) to perform automatic and high-precision determination of boron isotope using static multicollection of Cs2BO2+ ions.The research has been performed to investigate the impact of ion current and filament current on the accuracy and reproducibility of boron isotope measurements for NIST 951 Standard,giving values of 11B/10B were in the range of 4.052 63—4.053 38,when ion current varied 0.1—10 V and filament current varied 1 150—1 350 mA.The phenomenon of this study was filament current.With the higher of filament current,the ion current was corresponding to be higher.Based on this discovery,we have established the conditions for precise boron isotopic measurement using the multicollection technique by automatic mode.The proposed method was used for the determination of NIST 951 H3BO3 and natural samples.The results show that the automatic mode and manual mode has same precision and accuracy.And this technique enables us to do speedy analysis of boron isotopes and greatly improve the efficiency.
Accurate determination of boron in seawater by ICP-OES standard addition method

Abstract:As an important component of seawater, the accurate determination of boron has important significance in the study of marine environmental biogeochemistry. The traditional method for detecting boron in seawater has many disadvantages, including the need for tedious pretreatment, being time consuming and easily polluted, and having low sensitivity, making it unsuitable for analyzing numerous seawater samples. In this paper, we accurately determine the boron content in seawater by applying inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), coupled with the dilution and standard addition methods, to solve the high salt matrix effect and inter-ference problem. The optimum operating parameters of ICP-OES, which we determined using an orthogonal array design, are an RF power of 1400 W, a nebulizer gas flow of 0.7 L/min, a viewing height of 14 mm, and a sample introduction rate of 1.5 mL/min. The correlation coefficient of the linear regression equation was above 0.999. We achieved recovery rates for this method of 94.6%–101.8% and relative standard deviations of 0.76%–1.27%. The detection limit of this method was 1.073 μg/L. Our analysis of actual seawater samples demonstrated this method to be simple, rapid, sensitive, and precise, and able to effectively correct the matrix interference as well as reduce the measurement error. This method could be used to accurately determine boron in seawater and other samples with high salt contents.

Abstract:Boron, as both a lithophilic and biophilic element with high solubility, provides profound insights into the history of the Earth and environmental changes through its isotopes present in sediments. However, there are still some challenges in the accurate and precise determination of boron isotopes in sediments, particularly in pre-processing. When using boron-specific resins for the purification and enrichment of boron, it is in an alkaline environment. During the pre-treatment process, insoluble hydroxides of Al, Fe, and rare earth elements precipitate, exhibiting strong boron adsorption in high-pH solutions. This has potential impacts on the accuracy of boron isotope measurements. This study assesses a method that uses Na 2 CO 3 and K 2 CO 3 for dissolution at reduced temperatures and a cationic resin combined with a boron-specific resin for the enrichment and purification of boron in sediments. All the Al, Fe, and rare earth elements, which can generate water-insoluble hydroxides, were mainly removed by the cationic resin column, and boron in the sample solutions without Al, Fe, and rare earth elements was extracted by the boron-specific resin. The boron isotope composition ( δ 11 B) was determined using MC-ICP-MS. The results indicate that this method fully decomposes and efficiently purifies the sediments. The long-term instrumental external reproducibility of δ 11 B values for NIST SRM 951a, ERM-AE120, and ERM-AE121 were 0.01 ± 0.09‰ ( n = 13), −20.28 ± 0.16‰ and 19.98 ± 0.14‰, based on the measurements using a series of international reference materials over the last three years. The measured δ 11 B values for the standards have various matrices. The δ 11 B values of GSR-1 (−13.14‰ ± 0.27‰), BHVO-2 (−0.66 ± 0.06‰), AGV-2 (−3.22 ± 0.14‰) and Nass-6 (39.83 ± 0.07‰) are in agreement with the published data within uncertainty. The samples from Sihailongwan Maar Lake (SMK), the Loess Plateau (Loess-1 and Loess-2), shale (SH-1 and SH-2), and basalt (BL-1 and BL-2) were treated. The δ 11 B values for SMK, Loess-1, and Loess-2 are −10.20 ± 0.29‰, −11.06 ± 0.16‰, and −10.79 ± 0.10‰, showing a close relationship with δ 11 B of the continental crust. The δ 11 B values for shale (SH-1 and SH-2) are −7.06‰ ± 0.32‰ and +2.28‰ ± 0.05‰, while those for basalt (BL-1 and BL-2) are −8.78‰ ± 0.09‰ and +2.50‰ ± 0.19‰. These results indicate a significant variation in the δ 11 B values across these samples. These findings imply that this approach is capable of efficiently enriching and purifying boron in sediments. It enables accurate and precise determination of δ 11 B in sediments, thus offering a reliable tool for conducting boron isotope studies in sedimentary earth science.

Abstract:The boron isotope abundance measured by the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was corrected under the optimal instrument conditions using standard solution of the boron isotope standard reference NIST SRM 951, and both the correction factor and the linear concentration range were determined. Boron isotope abundance of (CH3)2O·BF3 complex was measured under the same instrument conditions when 10B isotope was concentrated, with the relative standard deviation of 1.095%. The instrument stability was checked. The method to measure the boron isotope abundance has a low “memory effect”. The results are reliable and have a high precision.

Abstract:Boron isotopes in teeth has been a new proxy for dietary reconstructions and its resistance to diagenetic alteration. In this study a method using inductively coupled plasma source mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the measurement of boron isotope ratio in human dental enamel has been developed. Human dental enamel were digested with HNO3-H2O2 in a microwave system. Boron in solution was separated from the matrix components using Amberlite IRA-743 resin. The factors that may affect precision and accuracy in isotope ratio determination by ICP-MS, including memory effects, mass bias drift, and concentration effects, were investigated to obtain optimum conditions. Then, the 10B/11B ratios in teeth were measured. The results showed that 2% of HNO3 + 2% of NH3•H2O, selected as the diluent/rinse solution could be effective in the elimination of boron memory effect. There was no concentration effect on boron isotope ratios when the ratio of samples B concentration to standard B concentration (refers to Csample/Cstd) varied from 0.5 to 2. The result of 10B/11B ratios in tooth enamel by sex and age fluctuated over a broad range, ranged from 0.2007 to 0.2574. This method is expected to be used for boron isotope ratio analyses in archeometry, forensic identification, paleoecology, and other disciplines in the future.

Separation and Isotopic Determination of Boron in River Water Samples

Abstract:A method for separation and isotopic determination of boron with low content in the river water samples was developed: About 1?000 mL river water was purified by ion exchange Amberlite IRA743 resin and then by the mixture of cationexchange resin ( H+ form ) and anionexchange resin ( ion exchanger Ⅱ, HCO-3 form ). The purified solution was subsequently exposed in ultraviolet light for one night in order to eliminate the organic matters, followed by evaporating to low volume. The average recovery was higher than 95%. The isotope dilution mass spectrometry analysis indicates that total procedure blank of boron is 41ng. Boron isotopic ratios were determined by PTIMS technique. The measured 11B/10B ratio for NIST-951 suggests that there is no isotopic fractionation of boron during the entire process. The procedure of sample preparation can meet the requirements of boron isotopic determination by thermal ionization mass spectrometry. The precision of isotopic measurement for boron in river water is better than 0.6‰.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been applied in quantitative and isotopic detection of boron. However, the inhomogeneous distribution and possible loss of substance affect the accuracy of quantitative analysis in aqueous solution when using surface-enhanced LIBS (SENLIBS). In this work, a method combining laser ablation molecular isotopic spectrometry enhanced by molecular laser-induced fluorescence and isotopic dilution (ID-LAMIS-MLIF) was proposed to accurately determine boron in aqueous solution. The mechanism of determination of the isotopic abundance ratio (IAR) from the isotopic fluorescence ratio (IFR) in LAMIS-MLIF was discussed and isotopic analysis of boron was carried out using boron monoxide (BO) spectra. The use of isotopic fluorescence ratio reduced the measurement uncertainty from above 15% to below 10%. The best R-2 of the isotopic abundance ratio calibration curve of 0.999 was reached. Combined with the theory of isotopic dilution analysis, the measured concentration was 1011.2 mu g mL(-1) for an actual value of 1000 mu g mL(-1). For 4 solutions under test, the average relative error was 3.76%. These results were much better than those of conventional LIBS to our best knowledge. This work demonstrates that ID-LAMIS-MLIF can be a powerful and potential tool for precise quantitative analysis of boron in aqueous solution.

Abstract:Boron isotopic ratio measurement is very important in the nuclear industry because it is used as neutron poison (in the form of boric acid or a B 4 C pellet) and control rod material (B 4 C pellet) in nuclear power plants. Since 10 B has a higher neutron absorption cross-section, enriched 10 B is used in the nuclear industry and the extent of enrichment varies from 50–90 %. Therefore, it is essential to determine the 10 B/ 11 B ratio in boric acid and B 4 C. The prime purpose of the present study is to utilize LA-ICPMS for evaluating 10 B/ 11 B ratio both in solution (boric acid) and solid (B 4 C pellet) without any pre-treatment so that the difficulty in dissolution or powdering process of B 4 C (one of the hardest materials) can be avoided and the B 4 C pellet can be reused. The results obtained from LA-ICPMS for the B 4 C pellet are discussed and compared with the solution ICPMS, TIMS, and LIMS. The solutions of boric acid (natural abundance) and dissolved B 4 C (natural & ∼67 % enriched isotopic composition) were analyzed by LA-ICPMS and validated by liquid sampling ICPMS data.

Abstract:When nature sediments (e.g. clay/carbonate sediments) are dissolved by hydrochloric acid, a large number of metallic ions such as Ca, Mg, Fe, Al and rare earth elements are released. These metal ions make large amount of water-insoluble hydroxide precipitate under alkaline condition which can easily absorb and affect the extraction of boron (B) along with boron isotope composition (delta B-11) determination. In this work, it was proved that when the solution was adjusted to alkalescent, adding an appropriate EDTA-2Na could effectively avoid insoluble hydroxide precipitation. The interference of EDTA-2Na to boron isotope determination was effectively reduced by rinsing the resin with ammonia after the alkalescent solution passing through the boron specific resin and extending the ionization time of simples in the measurement process. After the entire process, the recovery rate of boron was more than 95%, and the boron isotopic ratio of NIST SRM 951 ranged from 4.05146 to 4.05628. The boron isotopic composition (delta B-11) of sediment of Sanya, Dachaidan lacustrine and Dachaidan intercrystalline were +17.64 parts per thousand, -5.74. and +1.8 parts per thousand, respectively. This method could meet the need of the high-precision determination of boron isotope of sediments such as clay sediments, carbonate sediments, loess and paleosol. In addition, this study provided a simple and low interference pretreatment method for high-precision determination of boron isotope.

Abstract:The methods for the boron separation and its isotopic determination in [WT5BX]foraminifera was developed, using Amberlite IRA 743 resin and the mixture of cation-exchange resin (H + form) and anion -exchange resin (ion exchanger II, HCO - 3 form). Abstract:Boron is an important element in nuclear reactor technology due to its high neutron absorption cross section of 10B isotope. Isotopic composition of B (IC, 10B/11B atom ratio) determination in finished neutron absorbers is a necessity under chemical quality control (CQC). We report an innovative greener method for rapid and non-destructive approach of isotopic composition determination of B in "as received" boron based ceramic neutron absorbers including boron carbides and hexa-borides by external (in air) Particle Induced Gamma-ray Emission (PIGE) using 3.5 MeV proton beam. It involves irradiation of "as received" powder samples wrapped in a thin Mylar film and measurement of prompt gamma rays at 429, 718 and 2125 keV from 10B(p,αγ)7Be, 10B(p,p'γ)10B and 11B(p,p'γ)11B, respectively, using a HPGe detector system. The method was standardized with natural and enriched B4C powders. For validation, the results of isotopic composition obtained from "as received" samples were compared with that obtained from pellet samples using both external and vacuum chamber PIGE methods. IC values obtained for natural to 10B enriched samples (19.8-67 atom % of 10B) are very encouraging with 1-2% and 0.3-0.7% uncertainties from single and replicate sample experiments. The method is truly non-destructive as the samples can be returned back as such after the experiment as they are not radioactive. Compared to existing PIGE method for isotopic composition of B, the developed method keeps promise for wide applications as it is simple, sensitive and rapid and it does not require vacuum, pellet preparation with a binder, exact mass of the sample and beam current measurement.
