Abstract:Carbon-atom extrusion from the ipso-position of a halobenzene ring (C6H5X; X=F, Cl, Br, I) and its coupling with a methylene ligand to produce acetylene is not confined to [LaCH2](+); also, the third-row transition-metal complexes [MCH2](+), M=Hf, Ta, W, Re, and Os, bring about this unusual transformation. However, substrates with substituents X=CN, NO2, OCH3, and CF3 are either not reactive at all or give rise to different products when reacted with [LaCH2](+). In the thermal gas-phase processes of atomic Ln(+) with C7H7Cl substrates, only those lanthanides with a promotion energy small enough to attain a 4f(n)5d(1)6s(1) configuration are reactive and form both [LnCl](+) and [LnC(5)H(5)Cl](+). Branching ratios and the reaction efficiencies of the various processes seem to correlate with molecular properties, like the bond-dissociation energies of the C-X or M+-X bonds or the promotion energies of lanthanides.

Abstract:The thermal gas-phase reactions of rhenium carbonyl complexes [Re(CO)x ]+ (x=0-3) with methane have been explored by using FT-ICR mass spectrometry complemented by high-level quantum chemical calculation. While it had been concluded in previous studies that addition of closed-shell ligands in general decreases the reactivity of metal ions, the current work provides an exception: the previously demonstrated inertness of atomic Re+ towards methane is completely changed upon ligation with CO. Both [Re(CO)]+ and [Re(CO)2 ]+ bring about efficient dehydrogenation of the hydrocarbon under ambient conditions. However, addition of a third ligand to form [Re(CO)3 ]+ completely quenches the reactivity.

Abstract:Electronic absorption and emission data of M(CO)4(phen) complexes, where M=Cr, Mo or W; phen=1,10-phenanthroline are reported using density functional theory (DFT). Electronic absorption spectra of [M(CO)4(phen)] show a strong band in the visible region of the spectrum, whose metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) M→phen and M→COax character is indicated by high molar absorptivity. This assignment is investigated by theoretical calculations, which differ from the early interplay of M→L metal to ligand charge transfer MLCT and ligand-filed (LF) electronic transitions, occurring between d-orbitals. The phosphorescence of each complex was identified as a lowest, triplet metal to ligand charge transition (MLCT) around 740nm.

Abstract:We observed enhanced coalescence reactions of fullerenes by laser desorption of chemical adducts of (C6H5CH2)nC60, (C9H7)mHnC60, (CCl2)xC60 and the newly available poly-N-vinylcarbazole (PVK)-C60/70. The mass spectra of the laser-produced species reveal a characteristic bi-modal profile, with one maximum abundance distribution of parent fullerene ions located at C60 and the other at nearly twice C60. The mass spectra of both pristine C60 and the non-reactive PS/C60 mixture show monotonically descending intensity of daughter fullerenes with successive C2 captures, whereas slightly enhanced coalescence products are observed for the reactive PVK/C60/70 mixture which is known as a charge transfer complex. The mechanism of efficient coalescence is believed to be cluster collisional nucleation of pairs of reactive fullerene fragments (nascent C60, C58, etc.) induced by photofragmentation of the reactive Rn-C60 adduct or Rn⋯C60 charge transfer system, which is indicated by the laser power dependence features and the correlation between enhanced fullerene fragments and coalescence products.

Abstract:Laser-ablated Mo and W atoms react with CO in excess neon to give the same unsaturated M(CO)(3,4,5) carbonyls observed from photodissociation of M(CO)(6). The observed neon matrix fundamentals for these M(CO)(3,4,5) species bridge previous argon matrix and gas phase values. The M(CO)(2) dicarbonyls absorb at 1895.2 and 1884.5 cm(-1), and the MCO monocarbonyls absorb at 1881.2 and 1859.9 cm(-1) for Mo and W, respectively. The M(CO)1,2(+) cations and M(CO)(1.2)(-) anions are observed as the ablation process also provides cations and electrons. Density functional theory calculations support the product identifications and vibrational assignments.
Formation Mechanism and Spectroscopy of C6H Radicals in Extreme Environments: a Theoretical Study.

Abstract:This study examined the reaction mechanisms of singlet (rhombic) and triplet (linear) C4 with acetylene by using accurate ab initio CCSD(T)/CBS//B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) calculations followed by a kinetic analysis of various reaction pathways and computations of relative product yields in combustion and planetary atmospheres. These calculations were combined with the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) calculations of reaction rate constants for predicting product-branching ratios, which depend on the collision energy under single-collision conditions. The results demonstrate that the initial reaction begins with the formation of an intermediate 3i2 with an entrance barrier of 3.0 kcal mol-1 and an intermediate 1i1 without entrance barriers. The product-branching ratios obtained by solving kinetic equations with individual rate constants calculated using the RRKM and variational transition-state theories for determining the collision energies between 5 kcal mol-1 and 25 kcal mol-1 demonstrate that l-C6H + H is the dominant reaction product, whereas HC3C3 + H, l-C6 + H2, c-C6H + H, and c-C6 + H2 are minor products. The electronic absorption spectra of solid neon matrices in the range of 17 140-22 200 cm-1 were obtained by Maier et al., and the optimized ground and excited state structures of C6H were used to simulate the absorption spectra by one-photon excitation equations. The displaced harmonic oscillator approximation and the Franck-Condon approximation were used to simulate the absorption spectrum of the B2Π ← X2Π transition of C6H. This indicates that the vibronic structures were dominated by one of the six active completely symmetric modes, with v3 being the most crucial.
A Continuous-Wave EPR Investigation into the Photochemical Transformations of the Chromium(I) Carbonyl Complex [Cr(CO)4bis(diphenylphosphino)]+ and Reactivity with 1-hexene

Abstract:Chromium complexes containing a bis(diphenylphosphino) ligand have attracted significant interest over many years due to their potential as active catalysts for ethylene oligomerisation when combined with suitable co-catalysts such as triethylaluminium (TEA) or methylaluminoxane (MAO). While there has been considerable attention devoted to the possible reaction intermediates and the nature of the Cr oxidation states involved, the potential UV photoactivity of the Cr(I) complexes has so far been overlooked. Therefore, to explore the photoinduced transformations of bis(diphenylphosphino) stabilized Cr(I) complexes, we used continuous-wave (CW) EPR to study the effects of UV radiation on a cationic [Cr(CO)4(dppp)]+[Al(OC(CF3)3)4]− complex (1), where dppp represents the 1,3 bis-(diphenylphosphino)propane ligand, Ph2P(C3H6)PPh2. Our preliminary investigations into the photochemistry of this complex revealed that [Cr(CO)4(dppp)]+ (1) can be readily photo-converted into an intermediate mer-[Cr(CO)3(κ1-dppp)(κ2-dppp)]+ complex (2) and eventually into a trans-[Cr(CO)2(dppp)2]+ complex (3) in solution at room temperature under UV-A light. Here, we show that the intermediate species (2) involved in this transformation can be identified by EPR at much lower temperature (140 K) and at a specific wavelength (highlighting the wavelength dependency of the reaction). In addition, small amounts of a 'piano-stool'-type complex, namely [Cr(CO)2(dppp-η6-arene)]+ (4), can also be formed during the photoconversion of [Cr(CO)4(dppp)]+ using UV-A light. There was no evidence for the formation of the [Cr(L-bis-η6-arene)]+ complex (5) in these UV irradiation experiments. For the first time, we also evidence the formation of a 1-hexene coordinated [Cr(CO)3(dppp)(1-hexene)]+ complex (6) following UV irradiation of [Cr(CO)4(dppp)]+ in the presence of 1-hexene; this result demonstrates the unprecedented opportunity for exploiting light activation during Cr-driven olefin oligomerisation catalysis, instead of expensive, difficult-to-handle, and hazardous chemical activators.

Co+(C2H2)n Complexes Studied with Selected-Ion Infrared Spectroscopy and Theory

Abstract:Co+(C2H2)n (n = 1-6) complexes produced with laser vaporization in a supersonic molecular beam are studied with infrared photodissociation spectroscopy and computational chemistry. Infrared spectra are measured in the C-H stretching region using the method of tagging with argon atoms to enhance the photodissociation yields. C-H stretch vibrations for all clusters studied are shifted to lower frequencies than those of the well-known acetylene vibrations from ligand → metal charge transfer interactions. The magnitude of the red shifts decreases in the larger clusters as the interaction is distributed over more ligands. Computational studies identify various unreacted complexes with individual acetylene ligands in cation-π bonding configurations as well as reacted isomers in which ligand coupling reactions have taken place. Infrared spectra are consistent only with unreacted structures, even though the formation of reacted structures such as the metal ion-benzene complex is highly exothermic. Large activation barriers are predicted by theory along the reaction coordinates for the n = 2 and 3 complexes, which inhibit reactions in these smaller clusters, and this situation is presumed to persist in larger clusters.
Insights into the Metal–CO Bond in O 2 M(η 1 -CO) (M = Cr, Mo, W, Nd, and U) Complexes

Abstract:Investigations on the structures and bonding properties of metal carbonyl compounds provide fundamental understandings on the origin of small-molecule activations. Herein, the geometry and bonding trends of a series of isovalent metal oxocarbonyl complexes O2M(η1-CO) (M = Cr, Mo, W, Nd, and U) were studied by combined matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy and advanced quantum chemical calculations. The title complexes present red shift of C-O stretching bands in the range from 122 to 244 cm-1, indicating the difference of CO activation ability for the series of isovalent metal dioxides. Density functional theory calculations predict T-shaped structures with a C2v symmetry for all the title molecules. O2Nd(η1-CO) bears little resemblance to the other complexes in bonding characters because of the weak interactions between the NdO2 and CO moiety. For the other complexes, natural localized molecular orbital analysis reveals a gradual increase of covalent character in M-CO bonds along the metal series Cr → Mo → W→ U. Energy decomposition analysis with natural orbitals for chemical valence calculations demonstrates that the M-CO bonding patterns conform to the conventional Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson motif. The contributions from orbital interactions in total attractions increase from Cr (41.7%) to U (52.7%). The breakdown of the orbital term into pairwise interactions shows that contributions of the M ← CO σ donation decrease from Cr (59.2%) to U (28.4%), while the M → CO π* backdonation increases significantly from Cr (23.8%) to U (67.3%). The more effective overlap and the better energy matching of U 5f and U 6d valence orbitals with CO π* orbitals result in much stronger U → CO π backdonation than the other metal elements.

Abstract:A combined experimental and theoretical study is presented of several ligand addition reactions of the triplet fragment (CpMn)-Cp-3(CO)(2) formed upon photolysis of CpMn(CO)(3). Experimental data are provided for reactions in n-heptane and perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PFMCH), as well as in PFMCH doped with C2H6, Xe and CO2. In PFMCH we find that the conversion of (CpMn)-Cp-3(CO)(2) to (CpMn)-Cp-1(CO)(2)(PFMCH) is much slower (tau = 18 (+/- 3) ns) than the corresponding reactions in conventional alkanes (tau = 111 (+/- 10) ps). We measure the effect of the coordination ability by doping PFMCH with alkane, Xe and CO2; these doped ligands form the corresponding singlet adducts with significantly variable formation rates. The reactivity as measured by the addition timescale follows the order (CpMn)-Cp-1(CO)(2)(C5H10) (tau = 270 (+/- 10) ps) > (CpMn)-Cp-1(CO)(2)Xe (tau = 3.9 (+/- 0.4) ns) similar to (CpMn)-Cp-1(CO)(2)(CO2) (tau = 4.7 (+/- 0.5) ns) > (CpMn)-Cp-1(CO)(2)(C7F14) (tau = 18 (+/- 3) ns). Electronic structure theory calculations of the singlet and triplet potential energy surfaces and of their intersections, together with non-adiabatic statistical rate theory, reproduce the observed rates semi-quantitatively. It is shown that triplet adducts of the ligand and (CpMn)-Cp-3(CO)(2) play a role in the kinetics, and account for the variable timescales observed experimentally.

Abstract:The reactions of Group-3 metal atoms with carbon monoxide in solid argon have been studied using matrix isolation infrared absorption spectroscopy. The lanthanide monocarbonyls LnCO were produced spontaneously on annealing. The observations on LnCO, Ln Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er are new. We also theoretically study the structure, bonding, and C-O stretch infrared frequencies. The covalent M-C bonding contains both M <- C sigma donation from the carbon lone pair, and M 5d -> CO 2 pi* back donation contributions. In addition to the open 4f(n) shells, the total spin, as found earlier, may have contributions from an M 'sigma doughnut' and the M-C pi bond, in a sigma(1)pi(1), sigma(1)pi(2) high-spin, or sigma(2)pi(1) low-spin configuration. They form at least a single-bond, and those with the sigma(1)pi(2) configuration approach a double bond in length. The weakening of the C-O bonding is related to the back donation to the antibonding C-O 2 pi* orbital.
A Combined Theoretical And Experimental Study Of The Reaction Products Of Laser-Ablated Thorium Atoms With Co: First Identification Of The Ctho, Ctho-, Othcco, Oth(Eta(3)-Cco), And Th(Co)(N) (N=1-6) Molecules

Abstract:Laser-ablated thorium atoms have been reacted with CO molecules during condensation in excess neon. Absorptions at 617.7 and 812.2 cm(-1) are assigned to Th-C and Th-O stretching vibrations of the CThO molecule. Absorptions at 2048.6, 1353.6, and 822.5 cm(-1) are assigned to the OThCCO molecule, which is formed by CO addition to CThO and photochemical rearrangement of Th(CO)(2). The OThCCO molecule undergoes further photoinduced rearrangement to OTh(eta (3)-CCO), which is characterized by C-C, C-O, and Th-O stretching vibrations at 1810.8, 1139.2, and 831.6 cm(-1). The Th(CO)(n) (n = 1-6) complexes are formed on deposition or on annealing. Evidence is also presented for the CThO- and Th(CO)(2)(-) anions, which are formed by electron capture of neutral molecules. Relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the geometry structures, vibrational frequencies, and infrared intensities strongly support the experimental assignments. It is found that CThO is an unprecedented actinide-containing carbene molecule with a triplet ground state and an unusual bent structure (ZCThO = 109 degrees). The OThCCO molecule has a bent structure while its rearranged product OTh(eta (3)-CCO) is found to have a unique exocyclic structure with side-bonded CCO group. We also find that both Th(CO)(2) and Th(CO)(2)(-) are, surprisingly, highly bent, with the angleC-Th-C bond angle being close to 50 degrees; the unusual geometries are the result of extremely strong Th-to-CO back-bonding, which causes significant three-centered bonding among the Th atom and the two C atoms.

Abstract:Laser-ablated U and Th atoms react with CO2 to give OUCO (1806.9, 823.2 cm(-1)) and OThCO (1778.4 cm(-1)) as major products, which are identified by isotopic substitution ((CO2)-C-13, (CO2)-O-18 and (CO2)-C-12 + (CO2)-C-13, (COO)-O-16-O-18 + (CO2)-O-18 mixtures), doping with CCl4 as an electron trap, and comparison with frequencies from density functional calculations. The insertion reaction is spontaneous as these bands increase on annealing the neon matrix from 4 to 6 K. Further reaction of OAnCO (An = Th, U) with another CO2 molecule gives the O(2)An(CO)(2) product, although much more so with uranium than thorium. Reaction of the metal cations with CO2 produces OUCO+ (2073.0, 881.2 cm(-1)) and OThCO+ (2009.9, 896.4 cm(-1)) with higher yield in thorium experiments. The O(2)An(CO)(2)(-) anions are observed for both metals again with higher yield in uranium investigations.

Abstract:Solvent-free reactions of C-60 with active methylene compounds, either with or without carbon tetrabromide ( CBr4), in the presence of a base under high-speed vibration milling (HSVM) conditions were investigated. The reaction of C-60 with diethyl bromomalonate was conducted under HSVM conditions in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3 to afford cyclopropane derivative 2. In the presence of CBr4, methanofullerenes 2, 7, 8 and 9 could be obtained by the direct reaction of C-60 with diethyl malonate, dimethyl malonate, ethyl acetoacetate and ethyl cyanoacetate, respectively, with the aid of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]undec-7-ene, piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3. More interestingly, 1,4-bisadducts 10 and 11 were produced by the reaction of C-60 with diethyl malonate and dimethyl malonate in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3 under HSVM conditions. On the other hand, dihydrofuran-fused C-60 derivatives 18, 19 and 20 were obtained from the reaction of C-60 with ethyl acetoacetate, 2,4-pentanedione and 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione with the aid of a base. Under the same conditions, less activated aryl methyl ketones such as 2-acetylpyridine, 2-acetylpyrazine and acetophenone provided monocarbonylated methanofullerene derivatives 27, 28 and 29. Except for the Bingel reactions, all other reactions under the HSVM conditions are considered to proceed according to a single-electron-transfer mechanism.
Reactions of Laser-Ablated Chromium Atoms, Cations, and Electrons with CO in Excess Argon and Neon: Infrared Spectra and Density Functional Calculations on Neutral and Charged Unsaturated Chromium Carbonyls

Abstract:Laser-ablated Cr atoms react with CO (12C16O, 13C16O, 12C18O) in excess argon to give the same Cr(CO)3,4,5 species observed from the photodissociation of Cr(CO)6. Similar reactions in excess neon give neon matrix fundamentals between argon matrix and gas-phase values. The dicarbonyl Cr(CO)2 is bent with 1970.8, 1821.5 cm-1 and 1982.1, 1832.9 cm-1 C−O stretching fundamentals in solid argon and neon, respectively. The high-spin CrCO molecule appears at 1975.6 and 2018.4 cm-1 in solid argon and neon, respectively, and exhibits a strong matrix interaction. The CrCO+ cation and Cr(CO)2- anion are observed in laser-ablation experiments in solid neon at 2200.7 and 1705.0 cm-1, respectively. The Cr2(CO)2 complex absorbs strongly at 1735.4 cm-1 and gives several combination bands in neon. Density functional theory calculations support the vibrational assignments.
How Can the Η1-Type Fullerene-Metal Bond Survive? A Systematic Survey of Reactions Between Mono-EMFs and (m'ln)2 Dimers.

Abstract:Recently, one η1-coordinated complex of endohedral metallofullerene (EMF) Y@C2v(9)-C82[Re(CO)5] has been synthesized and characterized with a highly efficient radical-coupling methodology by performing a photochemical reaction between Y@C2v(9)-C82 and [Re(CO)5]2 complexes. Theoretical investigations with the density functional theory reveal that this complex is stabilized by an ionic C-Re bond. The reactions of M@C2v(9)-C82 (M = Sc, Y, La) with [Re(CO)5]2 suggest that the reaction energies differ little because of similar single occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs) of M@C2v(9)-C82. In the reactions of Y@C2v(9)-C82 with various transition-metal complexes [M'Ln]2 (M' = Mn, Tc, Re, Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir), the C-M' bonds with Mn, Tc, Re, Fe, Ru, and Os can stably exist, whereas those with Co, Rh, and Ir are unstable. Further analyses disclose that, in each element group, the stability of the C-M' bond is mainly determined by the bond energy of the M'-M' bond, which is related to the dσ orbital of the M'Ln species. Moreover, the very-low-energy dσ orbitals and large geometrical distortions of M'(CO)4 (M' = Co, Rh, Ir) lead to poor stabilities of the C-M' (M' = Co, Rh, Ir) bonds. As comparison, the reactions of Y@Cs(6)-C82 and La@C72 have been investigated. The Y@Cs(6)-C82 structure is more reactive toward the [M'Ln]2 complexes than Y@C2v(9)-C82 thanks to a lower SOMO of Y@Cs(6)-C82 than that of Y@C2v(9)-C82, which derives from position change of the Y atom in Cs(6)-C82 during the reactions. However, the formation of [Y@Cs(6)-C82]2 suppresses the formation of several C-M' bonds. The reactivity of La@C72 is weak due to a high LUMO+1 of C72, which leads to a high SOMO of La@C72. We believe that this theoretical study provides primary principles of radical-coupling reactions of EMFs and will be valuable for future research of organometallic complexes of fullerene.
