Abstract:The structure of detonation propagating in dimethyl ether–oxygen mixtures has been investigated using steady one-dimensional and unsteady two-dimensional simulations performed with realistic thermochemistry. The origin of the non-monotonous energy release in rich DME–\(\hbox {O}_{2}\) mixtures at low pressure has been demonstrated to be due to the large concentration of formaldehyde and methane formed under such conditions. This results in a delayed production of O atoms through chain branching and postpones the energy release by \(\hbox {CH}_{3}+\hbox {O}=\hbox {CH}_{2}\hbox {O}+\hbox {H}\). Comparison of the numerical soot foil and schlieren images obtained for DME–\(\hbox {O}_{2}\) with those for rich \(\hbox {H}_{2}\)–\(\hbox {NO}_{2}/\hbox {N}_{2}\hbox {O}_{4}\) mixtures led to the conclusion that double cellular structure is not observed in rich DME–\(\hbox {O}_{2}\) despite the non-monotonous energy release profile. Examination of the thermochemical scales in the ZND structure showed that the critical conditions for the formation of a detonation with double cellular structure are not fulfilled for DME–\(\hbox {O}_{2}\) mixtures.
