Abstract:Additive manufacturing technology has significantly impacted contemporary industries due to its ability to generate intricate computer-designed geometries. However, 3D-printed polymer parts often possess limited application potential, primarily because of their weak mechanical attributes. To overcome this drawback, this study formulates liquid crystal/photocurable resins suitable for the stereolithography technique by integrating 4'-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl with a photosensitive acrylic resin. This study demonstrates that stereolithography facilitates the precise modulation of the existing liquid crystal morphology within the resin. Furthermore, the orientation of the liquid crystal governs the oriented polymerization of monomers or prepolymers bearing acrylate groups. The products of this 3D printing approach manifest anisotropic behavior. Remarkably, when utilizing liquid crystal/photocurable resins, the resulting 3D-printed objects are approximately twice as robust as those created using commercial resins in terms of their tensile, flexural, and impact properties. This pioneering approach holds promise for realizing autonomously designed structures that remain elusive with present additive manufacturing techniques.
A Comparative Study on 3D Printed Silicone-Epoxy/acrylate Hybrid Polymers Via Pure Photopolymerization and Dual-Curing Mechanisms

Abstract:A type of silicone-epoxy resin has been synthesized and compounded with acrylates to obtain hybrid inks for stereolithography 3D printing. Two approaches of printing have been developed: one approach is pure photopolymerization through the addition of free radical and cationic photoinitiators to the hybrid resin; the other approach untilizes a photo-thermal dual-curing system with free radical photoinitiator for acrylates and thermal curing agent for epoxy resin. The results of hardness, gel content, FTIR and SEM measurements show that both systems get highly crosslinked and interpenetrating polymer network structures, but with different extent of phase separation due to different curing processes. Thermalmechanical and mechanical tests demonstrate that 3D objects from the dual-curing system have higher glass transition temperatures, higher printing efficiency and much enhanced mechanical properties compared with these from the pure photopolymerization system. In addition, both of the systems get 3D objects with high printing accuracy and good thermal stability. The dual-curing mechanism, therefore, has distinct advantages over the pure photopolymerization method.

Abstract:In this paper, we use 6 different prepolymers to prepare Stereolithography photosensitive resin. Through making comparison of the resins' hardness, tensile strength and bending strength, we select resin formula which is in line with the UV curing hardness requirements. This formula has excellent integrated mechanical performance and can print models well. This resin has been put into production and has excellent commercial value.

Abstract:A novel cationic photosensitive resin (3DSLR-01) for stereolithography 3D printing was prepared with 3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl-3',4'-epoxycyclohexane carboxylate (2021P), 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol glycidyl ether (JX-026), diglycidyl 4,5-epoxycyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (S-186), polycaprolactone polyol(Polyol-0305), novolac epoxy resin(F-51), bis(3-ethyl-3-oxetanylmethyl) ether (S-221) and a mixture of triarylsulfonium hexafluoroantimonate salts solution (UVI-6976). The properties of the photosensitive resin and its UV-cured films were investigated by some instruments and equipment. The experimental results show that the critical exposure (Ec) of the photosensitive resin is 16.3 mJ/cm2, the penetration depth (Dp) is 0.14 mm, and the optical property of the photosensitive resin is excellent. Rectangle plates were printed by using a stereolithography apparatus (HRPL-150A) with the photosensitive resin as the manufacturing material, and the shrinkage rates of the plates were less than 0.60%, which showed that the accuracy of the manufactured plates was very high.

Abstract:3D Printing has become a powerful technology for future advanced manufacturing, however the choice of materials with good performance is still limited. In this research, a type of hybrid photopolymer resin based on silicone epoxy with high UV curing rate and low viscosity was applied in stereolithography (SLA) technology. First, aliphatic silicone epoxy was synthesized through hydrosilylation reaction, and then compounding with acrylates, cycloaliphatic epoxy and photo‐initiators, finally the hybrid photopolymer system for SLA was obtained. The features of UV curing process were studied through photo‐differential scanning calorimetry and real‐time Fourier transform infrared measurements. Scanning electron microscopy test showed interpenetrating polymer network structure was formed in 3D objects. The performances of 3D printed sample such as mechanical properties, thermal mechanical and stability properties were also investigated in detail. Moreover, the 3D printed objects with complicated structures showed high printing accuracy. This new type of hybrid photopolymer system based on aliphatic silicone epoxy was with fabrication ease, good mechanical properties, good thermal stability and high printing resolution and has great potential of applications in industrial design and models making fields.

Optical Poling in a Crosslinkable Polymer System

Abstract:Efficient optical poling of a crosslinkable polyurethane film, in which a high crosslinking density can result, is experimentally investigated and compared with corona poling. The photoinduced orientation and the crosslinking processes of the chromophores can be performed separately. The heating rate and the final curing temperature are crucial for the optical poling procedure. Through thermal curing of the sample, the stability properties of photoinduced polar order are demonstrated to be dramatically enhanced, especially its photostability. It is also shown that corona poling is more effective than optical poling in the case of a crosslinkable thick film.

Abstract:Stereolithography (SL) is widely used because of its numerous advantages over other three-dimensional printing (3DP) techniques. However, SL is a layer-by-layer process, where interlayer adhesion between adjacent layers becomes more brittle than the intralayer adhesion, common to all 3DP process. Here, we report a facile method to strengthen the interlayer adhesion for SL. By the addition of monomers with thermally curable functional groups (epoxy or hydroxyl groups), thermal post-curing induces chemical reactions between them in adjacent layers after the photoinitiated printing process. It leads to fully 3D cured objects with enhanced interlayer bonding and substantially improved mechanical properties, but not a significant change in the dimensional stability. This approach can expand the use of 3DP techniques in load-bearing applications that require mechanically robust printed objects with precise dimensions.
Formation mechanism of stereolithography of Si3N4 slurry using silane coupling agent as modifier and dispersant

Abstract:Silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramic slurry with high-solid loading, low-viscosity and high curing depth was prepared by using a surface modifier (silane coupling agent) directly as the dispersant. The effect of the interaction between modified Si3N4 powders and prepolymer on rheological property, kinetic stability, wettability and curing property of the slurry was investigated. The stereolithography forming mechanism of the modified Si3N4 ceramic slurry was elucidated. It is revealed that the epoxy group of KH560 can easily form an ether covalent bond with the hydroxyl group of bisphenol A epoxy acrylate (EA). This makes submicron sized Si3N4 powder well-dispersed in the premixed liquid and leads to improved rheological properties and kinetic stability of the ceramic slurry. In particular, the ether covalent bond formed between surface modified Si3N4 powder and EA reduces the surface tension of the slurry and enhances the wettability of the cured slurry layer. KH560 acts as a molecular bridge linking EA to Si3N4 powder surface and forms an EA shell structure. Therefore, the refractive index difference between the Si3N4 powder and prepolymer reduces significantly by two orders of magnitude, leading to an increase in the curing depth. These findings could be crucial for the stereolithographic fabrication of high refractive index ceramics parts with high precision and complex geometries.

Abstract:Abstract 3D printing using conventional stereolithography is challenging because the polymerized layers adhere to the solid constraining interface. The mechanical separation forces lead to poor process reliability and limit the geometrical design space of the printed parts. Here, these challenges are overcome by utilizing a static inert immiscible liquid below the resin as the constraining interface. We elucidate the mechanisms that enable the static liquid to mitigate stiction in both discrete layer-by-layer and continuous layerless growth modes. The inert liquid functions as a dewetting interface during the discrete growth and as a carrier of oxygen to inhibit polymerization during the continuous growth. This method enables a wide range of process conditions, such as exposure and resin properties, which facilitates micrometer scale resolutions and dimensional accuracies above 95%. We demonstrate multi-scale microstructures with feature sizes ranging from 16 μm to thousands of micrometers and functional devices with aspect ratios greater than 50:1 without using sacrificial supports. This process can enable additive 3D microfabrication of functional devices for a variety of applications.

Abstract:This research proposes an ink optimization strategy for near‐infrared light‐driven direct ink writing of rapid additive manufacturing objects utilizing up‐conversion assisted photopolymerization. The well‐matched initiative components can synergistically maintain more reactive species and realize higher reacting rate. This strategy is compatible in both rigid and elastomeric materials, and can further shorten manufacturing by multi‐resolution printing. Light‐driven 3D printing can empower the liberty of creation and concretize the original creation in versatile conditions with plenty of choices in resolution or properties. However, photopolymerization‐based 3D printing inks are facing a trade‐off between requiring processing rate and satisfying performance, and a chemical optimization strategy is proposed to achieve the ink demands of rapid direct ink writing utilizing up‐conversion assisted photopolymerization. Since acylphosphonate can generate two reactive radicals and tertiary amine can reinitiate polymerization in oxygen inhibition, the yielded active species in limited irradiation of 3D printing are maximized to accelerate the polymerization by theoretically and experimentally interpreting the roles of up‐conversion particle, photoinitiators, and co‐initiator played in printing. High print speed in depositing and in situ curing (3.56 × 104 mm3 h−1) are realized, and the manufacturing time is shortened by multi‐resolution printing which is impressive compared to current 3D printing methods. The strategy is simultaneously compatible with rigid and elastomeric materials, and will surely contribute to other light‐driven 3D printing technologies for extensive applications.

Abstract:The diversity of biomedical applications makes stereolithographic (SL) three-dimensional (3D) printing process complex. A strategy was developed to simulate the layer-by-layer fabrication of 3D printed products combining polymerization kinetic with reaction conditions to realize print preview. As a representative example, the typical UV-curable dental materials based on epoxy acrylate and photoinitiator with different molar ratios was exposed under varying intensity of UV light to verify the simulation results. A theoretical kinetics model containing oxygen inhibition was established. In-situ FTIR was employed to measure propagation and termination constants while coupled UV/vis was performed to examine the law of light attenuation during cure reaction, even with various colours and additives. Simulation results showed that the correlation coefficient square between the experiments and simulations of epoxy acrylate with 1%, 2% and 3% initiator upon 20 mW/cm2 UV light are 0.8959, 0.9324 and 0.9337, respectively. Consequently, our simulation of photopolymerization for SL 3D printing successfully realized visualization of printing quality before practically printing the targeted biomedical objects with complex topology structures.

Abstract:Stereolithography is known as one of the best Additive Manufacturing technologies in terms of geometrical and dimensional precision for polymeric materials. In recent years, a lot of studies have shown that the creation of ceramic resins, through a particular combination of monomeric components and ceramic powders, allows to obtain complex shape geometries thanks to the photopolymerization process. This review highlights the characteristics and properties of ceramic resins, peculiarities of the ceramic stereolithography processes, up to the relationship between the composition of the ceramic resin and the complexity of the post-processing phases. The comparison of different studies allows outlining the most common steps for the production of ceramic resins, as well as the physical and chemical compatibility of the different compounds that must be studied for the good feasibility of the process.
Stereolithography 3D Printing of Stimuli-Responsive Spin Crossover@Polymer Nanocomposites with Optimized Actuating Properties

Abstract:We used stereolithography to print polymer nanocomposite samples of stimuli-responsive spin crossover materials in the commercial photo-curable printing resins DS3000 and PEGDA-250. The thermomechanical analysis of the SLA-printed objects revealed not only the expected reinforcement of the polymer resins by the introduction of the stiffer SCO particles, but also a significant mechanical damping, as well as a sizeable linear strain around the spin transition temperatures. For the highest accessible loads (ca. 13-15 vol.%) we measured transformation strains in the range of 1.2-1.5%, giving rise to peaks in the coefficient of thermal expansion as high as 10-3 °C-1, which was exploited in 3D printed bilayer actuators to produce bending movement. The results pave the way for integrating these advanced stimuli-responsive composites into mechanical actuators and 4D printing applications.

Abstract:In the present research, a type of cycloaliphatic silicone-epoxy resin is synthesized and then compounded with acrylates as well as photoinitiators to obtain hybrid photopolymers. The photocuring rate of the hybrid photopolymers, the morphology, thermal and mechanical properties of the cured samples with different silicone-epoxy/acrylate ratios are studied in detail. Scanning electron microscopy images prove that interpenetrating polymer network structure is formed. To improve the mechanical properties, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A is added and finally a type of hybrid photopolymer suitable for stereolithography 3D printing is obtained. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and photo-differential scanning calorimeter measurements show that the hybrid photopolymer has a high curing rate, while thermal property tests prove that the cured sample has high thermal stability. Mechanical property tests show that the cured samples have a tensile strength of 40.3 MPa with a break elongation of 6.7%. The objects printed with the hybrid photopolymer exhibit high resolution and dimension accuracy.
Preparation withthe photosensitive resin for 3D printing stereolithography technique and study on its properties

Abstract:The paper was reported that the method was prepared with 3DPSL-1 type photosensitive resin for 3D printing stereolithography technique,and the properties of the photosensitive resin were investigated.The main parameters of3DPSL-1 type photosensitive resin are as follows:the penetration depth(Dp) was 0.14 mm,the critical exposure(Ec)was 14.1 m J/cm2,and the viscosity at 30 ℃ was 359 m Pa·s.At 25 ℃,3DPSL-1 photosensitive resin density was 1.17 g/cm3,its UV-cured density was 1.21 g/cm3,and the cured volume shrinkage rate was 3.31%.The mechanical property and thermal property of the UV-cured 3DPSL-1 type photosensitive resin were determined,giving 21.0 MPa of tensile strength,1 108.2 MPa of tensile modulus,10.6% of elongation at break and 47 ℃ of glass transistion temperature.With 3DPSL-1 type photosensitive resin as the processing material,the part of a flexible pliers was fabricated by selecting the processing parameters of the stereolithography apparatus(HRPL-I),and the quality of the fabricated part was good.The preparation of the photosensitive resin will promote the further development of the domestic 3D printing stereolithography technique to play a positive role.

Reconfigurable Polymer Networks for Digital Light Processing 3D Printing

Abstract:To realize a wide range of applications using three-dimensional (3D) printing, it is urgent to develop 3D printing resins with different functions. However, the design freedom of the resin formulation is greatly limited to guarantee fast gelation during 3D printing. Herein, we report a reconfigurable polymer network that is compatible with digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. The properties of the printed objects can be remanipulated by post-thermal treatment, during which the polymer network undergoes significant changes through the amidation of ester. The Young's modulus could be significantly reduced by 50 times. Specifically, a well-printed rigid part can be completely turned into a low-viscosity liquid. Investigation and Optimization of the Impact of Printing Orientation on Mechanical Properties of Resin Sample in the Low-Force Stereolithography Additive Manufacturing

Abstract:The mechanical properties of resin samples in low-force stereolithography additive manufacturing were affected by the printing orientation, and were investigated and optimized to achieve excellent single or comprehensive tensile strength, compressive strength, and flexural modulus. The resin samples were fabricated using a Form3 3D printer based on light curing technology according to the corresponding national standards, and they were detected using a universal testing machine to test their mechanical properties. The influence of the printing orientation was represented by the rotation angle of the resin samples relative to the x–axis, y–axis and z–axis, and the parameters was selected in the range 0°–90° with an interval of 30°. The multiple regression models for the mechanical properties of the prepared resin samples were obtained based on least square estimation, which offered a foundation from which to optimize the parameters of the printing orientation by cuckoo search algorithm. The optimal parameters for the tensile strength, compressive strength and flexural modulus were 'α = 45°, β = 25°, γ = 90°', 'β = 0°, β = 51°, γ = 85°' and 'α = 26°, β = 0°, γ = 90°', respectively, which obtained the improvements of 80.52%, 15.94%, and 48.85%, respectively, relative to the worst conditions. The mechanism was qualitatively discussed based on the force analysis. The achievements obtained in this study proved that optimization of the printing orientation could improve the mechanical properties of the fabricated sample, which provided a reference for all additive manufacturing methods.

Abstract:This work demonstrates a new strategy of producing honeycomb-like porous structures in cross-linked polymer films via a simple one-step synthesis/fabrication process. This is based on the “breath figure” formation during the in situ cross-linking of reactive monomer solutions. A chloroform solution, containing tert-butyl acrylate monomer and tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate cross-linker, was cross-linked upon UV radiation under a moist and nitrogen saturated chamber. Micron-sized pores with reasonable uniformity were obtained in the cross-linked polymer films. The size, shape, uniformity and ordering of the pores show significant dependences on the processing conditions. Using this method, porous structures were also achieved in a commercially available photo-active resin, NOA 65, illustrating the generality of this approach.

Abstract:Photopolymer 3D printing techniques have a common limitation: the layers have to be deposited in a sequential order, which constrains multi-material fabrication to techniques where the vats have to be exchanged many times, in addition to repeating the cleaning step for each vat change. In this work, we present a technique that allows multi-material stereolithography by overcoming the layer-by-layer limitation, enabling one single immersion per resin. This is enabled by selective crosslinking of voxels at any depth and position inside the stereolithography (SLA) resin vat. The concept uses invisibility windows and upconversion to achieve selective volumetric crosslinking. This enables printing inside and through previously 3D printed parts. A photopolymer resin is developed, in which a visible light photoinitiator (fluorinated diphenyl titanocene) with a broad absorption and an optical absorber (naphthalimide class dye, maximum absorption at 445 nm) are carefully matched with the upconversion emissions of lanthanide-doped phosphors (both micron-sized phosphors and customized core/shell/shell nanoparticles). The lateral printing resolution of the formulation was found to be 134 ± 13 μm, which was improved to 103 ± 11 μm through the addition of light-absorbing dye. The vertical resolution was defined by the layer thickness achieved by lowering the build platform, which was set to 100 μm. The NIR light used for the excitation of upconversion phosphors enabled enhanced penetration depths of up to 5.8 cm, which allowed SLA printing of interwoven multi-color samples, multi-material rigid/flexible (acrylate/elastomer) samples and dielectric/metallic plated samples. This opens up a myriad of new possibilities, such as 3D printing objects inside cavities in a different material, restoration of broken objects and artefacts, 3D circuitry, insitu bioprinting, etc.
