Abstract:A novel lithium ion battery (LIB) anode material with high capacity is found, which is made of cross-linked graphene sheets. The new material, named bco-C20, has a 3D honeycomb structure composed of unit cells of 20 atoms, and exhibits a body-centered orthorhombic crystal structure. The thermal, dynamic, and mechanical stabilities of such a material are well evaluated by molecular dynamics simulation, phonon dispersion, and Born-Huang criteria. As a promising semimetal, bco-C20 possesses a unique electronic band structure with cross-linked Dirac nodal-rings. The Fermi velocities are from 8.25 × 105 m s-1 to 10.45 × 105 m s-1, indicating good electronic transport properties. A comparison with most of the 3D carbon materials demonstrates that bco-C20 also has the good material properties of high strength and fracture toughness that are very close to those of graphene. Furthermore, a negative Poisson's ratio of up to -0.25 is very helpful for the new material to bear compressive load. Most importantly, as a promising anode material in LIBs, bco-C20 has a high theoretical capacity of 893 mA h g-1, low diffusion barrier of 0.02-0.12 eV, average open-circuit voltage of 0.41 V, and negligible volume change of 3.7%. Some related properties of lithiated bco-C20 are also evaluated and discussed. This study should be helpful for expanding the family of 3D carbon materials with extraordinary properties as well as their promising applications in advanced energy fields.

Abstract:The demand for lithium-ion batteries with both high power and high-energy density has attracted widespread attention as energy-storage devices for the increasing demand of consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and grid-scale storage. However, the fabrication of an advanced electrode architecture with high areal capacity, excellent cycling stability, and superior rate performance remains a long-term challenge in the development of advanced electrochemical energy-storage devices. Herein, we design an effective and general strategy to spontaneously encapsulate Ge nanoparticles into a three-dimensional double hydrophilic N-doped ultrathin graphite/void/hydrophobic ultrathin graphite tube network (Ge@3D-DHGT) with control over the position for large specific capacity (1338 mA h g-1), high rate performance (752 mA h g-1 at 40 C), and superior cycling stability (up to 1000 cycles). Toward the practical application, the as-prepared Ge@3D-DHGT electrode showed a large areal capacity (10 mA h cm-2 under 8 mA cm-2), which provides a highly promising anode with both high capacity and high rate performance. Importantly, this work provides an approach to fabricate high-areal-capacity anodes with long cycling stability and rapid charge-discharge properties with practical applications in advanced rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal has attracted great attention as an ideal battery anode. However, non-uniform Li deposition leads to lithium dendrites, poor cycling performance, and safety hazards, thus hindering the commercial application of lithium metal anode. Herein, we present a new structure obtained by a facile chemical doping of 3-dimensional graphene (3DG) with Triethyloxonium hexachloroantimonate (OA) to guide uniform Li deposition. The created OA-3DG scaffold lowered the local current density with increased electrical conductivity and regulated Li deposition with enabled intermolecular interactions. All this facilitated homogenous Li nucleation and its controlled deposition. It was found that the initial homogenous nucleus layer regulated the following uniform Li growth, resulting in a dendrite-free anode. Benefiting from such favorable Li growth behavior, the doped 3DG endowed the lithium anode with long cycling stability of over 900 cycles along with a low overpotential (30 mV at a current density of 3 mA cm -2 ) in a symmetric Li/Li cell configuration. This significantly improved the performance of the created lithium-sulfur full cells, showing only 0.24% capacity reduction over 300 cycles.

Abstract:We have designed and synthesized a unique structured graphene/SnO2 composite, where SnO2 nano-particles are inserted in between interconnected graphene sheets which form hollow spherical multilayers. The hollow spherical multilayered structure provides much flexibility to accommodate the configuration and volume changes of SnO2 in the material. When it is used as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, such a novel nanostructure can not only provide a stable conductive matrix and suppress the mechanical stress, but also eliminate the need of any binders for constructing electrodes. Electrochemical tests show that the unique graphene/SnO2 composite electrode as designed could exhibit a large reversible capacity over 1000 mA h g(-1) and long cycling life with 88% retention after 100 cycles. These results indicate the great potential of the composite for being used as a high performance anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The three-dimensional conductive skeleton plays an important role for silicon-based anode materials to achieve good electrochemical performance in lithium ion batteries with high energy density. Here, we prepared a three-dimensional silicon/N-doped graphitized carbon composite (3D Si/NGC) from ZIF-67 precursor by magnesiothermic reduction reaction. The N-doped and graphitized conductive carbon acts as a robust three-dimensional configuration for the silicon nanoparticles, not only improving the conductivity of electrode, but also buffering the volume expansion of silicon nanoparticles. The 3D Si/NGC electrode exhibits good long-term cycle stability and impressive rate performance, delivering reversible capacity of 900 mA h g(-1) at 0.2 A g(-1) after 300 cycles with a capacity retention of 85.5% and a high discharge capacity of 880 mA h g(-1) at 1 A g(-1). The 3D Si/NGC with good electrochemical performance shows great potential as the next generation anode material for lithium ion batteries. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Optimization of lithium metal anode is a pivotal part in facilitating the evolution of next-generation high energy density solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, the practical application of lithium anode in solidstate LMBs is limited by uncontrollable dendrite growth and the poor interfacial contact with solid electrolyte. Herein, a 40 mu m thin lithium composite anode based on the AlN-embedded reduced graphene oxide (rGO) scaffold synthesized via one-step molten lithium infusion is proposed. The resulting lithiophilic Li-Al alloy and high ion-conductive Li3N in situ constructed the lithium ion diffusing highways inside electrode, enabling a well oriented Li deposition and effectively inhibiting the dendrite growth. Combined with in-situ polymerization and Li3N-modified solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), the composite anodes can prolong the lifespan of symmetric cell to 2100 h at 0.2 mA cm(-2)/0.2 mAh cm(-2) in carbonate-based solid polymer electrolytes. Moreover, LAG||LiFePO4 full cells also excelled in cycling capability and rate performance. This modified electrode offers a promising synergistic solution for designing high-performance solid-state LMBs.

Abstract:The Li-metal anode has been recognized as the most promising anode for its high theoretical capacity and low reduction potential. However, the major drawbacks of Li metal, such as high reactivity and large volume expansion, can lead to dendrite growth and solid electrolyte interface (SEI) fracture. An in situ artificial inorganic SEI layer, consisting of lithium nitride and lithium sulfide, is herein reported to address the dendrite growth issues. Porous graphene oxide films are doped with sulfur and nitrogen (denoted as SNGO) to work as an effective lithium host. The SNGO film enables the in situ formation of an inorganic-rich SEI layer, which facilitates the transport of Li-ions, improves SEI mechanical strength, and avoids SEI fracture. In addition, COMSOL simulation results reveal that the microchannels fabricated by the 3D printing technique further shorten the Li-ion transfer pathways and homogenize heat and stress distribution in the batteries. As a result, the assembled anode shows low capacity fading of 0.1% per cycle at 2 C rate with the sulfur cathode. In addition, the high lithium utilization of the SNGO host enables the anode to provide a stable capacity at low negative/positive electrode ratios under 3 in LiS batteries.
A Novel Graphene-Polysulfide Anode Material for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:We report a simple and efficient approach for fabrication of novel graphene-polysulfide (GPS) anode materials, which consists of conducting graphene network and homogeneously distributed polysulfide in between and chemically bonded with graphene sheets. Such unique architecture not only possesses fast electron transport channels, shortens the Li-ion diffusion length but also provides very efficient Li-ion reservoirs. As a consequence, the GPS materials exhibit an ultrahigh reversible capacity, excellent rate capability and superior long-term cycling performance in terms of 1600, 550, 380 mAh g −1 after 500, 1300, 1900 cycles with a rate of 1, 5 and 10 A g −1 respectively. This novel and simple strategy is believed to work broadly for other carbon-based materials. Additionally, the competitive cost and low environment impact may promise such materials and technique a promising future for the development of high-performance energy storage devices for diverse applications.
Laponite-Assisted Graphite Anode with a 3D Conductive and Interlinked Structure for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The structure of electrode and the selection of dopant are the critical factors affecting electrochemical performances. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) conductive and interlinked hybrid graphite electrode is designed and prepared using Laponite (Lap) as a structural stabilizer, ionic conductor, and binder and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as an electronic conductive linker. Due to the hydrogen-bond interaction between graphite and Lap, Lap nanowafers are highly dispersed in the hybrid, resulting in a hybrid graphite anode with good wettability, small impedance, and rapid lithium-ion diffusion (Li+ diffusion coefficient: 2.2 × 10–9 cm2 s–1). Benefiting from the Lap-assisted well-designed architecture, the hybrid graphite electrode shows an enhanced capacity (433 mAh g–1 at 0.2 A g–1) when used as an anode, indicating its good application potential in LIBs.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have attracted increasing attentions for their ultrahigh specific capacity (3860 mAh g(-1)) and the lowest electrode potential (-3.04 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). However, the dynamic volume changes, the complex interfacial reactions, and the dendrite growth remain as the grand challenges in LMBs that prevent their practical applications. A bi-layer artificial solid electrolyte interphase (BL-SEI), which is composed of covalent graphitic materials (graphene and h-BN) and inorganic components (LiF, Li2O, Li3N, and Li2CO3), is rationally designed through comprehensive first-principles calculation to render a stable Li metal anode. Key interfacial properties, such as chemical stability, ionic conductivity, and mechanical strength, are systematically investigated to achieve a rational design of the BL-SEI. Among all the considered BL-SEI, the graphene/LiF combination is hopeful to exhibit the best interfacial stability and electrochemical performance. The protective role of BL-SEI for Li metal anode comes from the coupled effects through the anisotropic character and the defective structure. This work reveals the origin of the significant role of BL-SEI for achieving a stable Li metal anode from the atomic and electronic level, affording a paradigm for rational deign of a high-performance artificial SEI in working LMBs.

Abstract:Lithium dendrite issue is the key problem that hampers the practical applications of lithium metal batteries. Regulating Li+ flux distribution on Li anode can effectively tune the Li dendrite growth. Here, we report a novel Li anode composited with artificial-solid electrolyte interphase (A-SEI) functionalized 3D carbon framework seamless bonding Li foil (A-3DCF@Li) that can tune Li+ flux distribution. The synergetic effect among 3D structure, A-SEI, and LiCx in A-3DCF@Li can regulate Li+ flux on Li surface, suppressing Li dendrite growth and boosting the electrochemical performance of lithium metal battery using LiNi0·83Co0.11Mn0.06O2 as cathode materials. The experimental results and theoretical calculation prove the above statement. The work developed here shed light on the development of high-performance lithium metal anode.

The preformed three-dimensional (3D) porous framework with numerous lithium nucleation sites is able to guide the lithium deposition in the cavity of 3D framework, suppressing the dendrite growth and dimensional change. Herein, we design a nanocapsule structure for lithium metal anodes consisting of 3D graphene with MgxLiy seeds inside. The 3D composite anode not only can be prepared in a simple and scalable process, but also can meet the requirements for both high energy density and long cycle life in the practical cells. During the observation of lithium deposition by transmission electron microscope, it was found that lithium metal was mainly deposited around the MgxLiy seeds within 3D graphene. Thereafter, when the composite anodes are well paired with the commercial LiFePO4 cathodes in coil cells and NCM811 (LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) cathodes in pouch batteries, they are able to deliver the energy density exceeding 350 Wh·kg−1 and long cycle life (>150 cycles) with high energy retention (>85%). The 3D lithium metal/graphene composite anode in the present work provides a promising new avenue for the fabrication of high energy density Li-metal batteries.
A 3D Framework with an In Situ Generated Li3N Solid Electrolyte Interphase for Superior Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:The practical application of lithium (Li) metal for next-generation rechargeable batteries is still hampered by uncontrolled growth of Li dendrite and severe volume change under repeated plating/stripping. Introducing a 3D structure to reserve space for Li storage and inducing uniform plating/stripping by a lithophilic interface layer are effective strategies to solve these problems. Herein, a novel 3D composite Li anode (Fe-N@SSM-Li) is constructed via an in situ reaction between Li and lithiophilic Fe2N/Fe3N (Fe-N) uniformly anchored on a stainless-steel mesh (SSM). The unique lithiophilic-conductive structure of the Fe-N@SSM-Li can stabilize the Li anode by effectively inducing uniform and dense deposition and confining Li deposition inside the Fe-N@SSM-Li to alleviate volume changes. The Fe-N@SSM-Li displays a distinguished electrochemical performance, with superior lifespan of 5000, 2250, and 1350 h under 1 mA cm(-2)/1 mAh cm-2, 5 mA cm(-2)/3 mAh cm(-2), and 20 mA cm(-2)/3 mAh cm-2 in symmetric cells, respectively. Combined with this highly stable Fe-N@SSM-Li, the full cells using LiFePO4 (LFP) and S/C cathodes both show significantly improved electrochemical performances. This work provides a low-cost and scalable strategy for the construction of high-efficiency Li anode with a novel 3D structure, offers new insights to the research of Li metal batteries and beyond.
Rational Design of Porous Nodal-Line Semimetallic Carbon for K-Ion Battery Anode Materials

Abstract:Potassium-ion battery (KIB), as one of the most promising alternatives to lithium-ion battery (LIB), has recently received considerable attention. One of the challenges in KIB is the design and synthesis of high performance anode materials with high capacity, high rate performance and good cycling stability. Here, on the basis of first principles calculations, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) porous nodal-line semimetal carbon allotrope, named BDL-14, consisting of benzene rings incorporated into the diamond lattice, as a potential candidate. With low mass density (1.41 g/cm3), ordered channels, high carrier velocity (0.83 × 106 m/s), high specific capacity (478.23 mAh/g), very low energy barriers (0.05~0.08 eV) for K ion diffusion, and a small volume expansion (7.03%) during charging and discharging processes, BDL-14 can surpass the properties of anodes currently being considered.

Graphene/C2N lateral heterostructures as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures have been proposed as potential anode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their large surface areas and excellent electronic properties. In this study, we employ first-principles calculations to investigate the structural stability, electronic properties, and ion diffusion behaviors of 2D graphene/C2N lateral heterostructures. Three species of (5, 26), (11, 26), and (17, 26) heterostructures are chosen to explore the effects of graphene components on electronic properties. The results show that graphene/C2N lateral heterostructures exhibit good dynamic stability due to a small lattice mismatch and strong chemical interaction at the heterojunction interface. By introducing zero-gap graphene, these heterostructures acquire good electronic conductivity with small direct band gaps. The component ratio of graphene can significantly tune the band gap, showing a monotonic decrease as the ratio increases. Moreover, the introduction of C2N components can greatly improve the lithium capacities of heterostructures. Small diffusion energy barriers (0.257-0.273 eV) and a low average operating voltage of 0.758 V are observed in graphene/C2N heterostructures. The effects of graphene components and valence states on Li migration are discussed. Our results demonstrate that the graphene/C2N lateral heterostructure can effectively combine the advantages of graphene and the C2N monolayer, showing great promise as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Metallic lithium (Li) is a promising anode for next-generation high-energy-density batteries, but its applications are still hampered due to the limited charging/discharging rate and poor cycling performance. Here, a hierarchical 3D porous architecture is designed with a binary network of continuous silver nanowires assembled on an interconnected 3D graphene skeleton as the host for Li-metal composite anodes, which offers a significant boost in both charging/discharging rates and long-term cycling performance for Li-metal batteries. This unique hierarchical binary network structure in conjunction with optimized material combination provides ultrafast, continuous, and smooth electron transportation channel and non-nucleation barrier sites to direct and confine Li deposition. It also offers outstanding mechanical strength and toughness to support massive Li deposition and buffer the internal stress fluctuations during long-term repeated Li stripping/plating thereby minimizing fundamental issues of dendrite formation and volume change even under ultrafast charging/discharging rates. As a result, the composite anode using this hierarchical host can work smoothly at an unprecedented high current density of 40 mA cm(-2) over 1000 plating/stripping cycles with low overpotential (<120 mV) in symmetric cells. The as-constructed full cell, paired with LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cathode, also exhibits excellent rate capability and high-rate cycling stability.

Abstract:A simple method based on alternating heating-quenching cycles is exploited to synthesize a three-dimensional (3D) macroporous graphene structure that is characterized by a hierarchically interconnected flexible network of high-quality graphene nanosheets with few oxygen-containing moieties. The structure can be employed as a suitable scaffold to load functional nanoparticles and as a fast transport channel for charge carriers. As a proof of concept, we fabricate novel graphene/P25 nanocomposites that are examined as stable high-performance anode materials for lithium ion batteries; the prepared nanocomposites feature excellent electrochemical performance with a capacity as high as 120 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles that is similar to 4.8 times larger than that of bare P25.

Abstract:Abstract The practical application of lithium (Li) metal for next‐generation rechargeable batteries is still hampered by uncontrolled growth of Li dendrite and severe volume change under repeated plating/stripping. Introducing a 3D structure to reserve space for Li storage and inducing uniform plating/stripping by a lithophilic interface layer are effective strategies to solve these problems. Herein, a novel 3D composite Li anode (Fe‐N@SSM‐Li) is constructed via an in situ reaction between Li and lithiophilic Fe 2 N/Fe 3 N (Fe‐N) uniformly anchored on a stainless‐steel mesh (SSM). The unique lithiophilic‐conductive structure of the Fe‐N@SSM‐Li can stabilize the Li anode by effectively inducing uniform and dense deposition and confining Li deposition inside the Fe‐N@SSM‐Li to alleviate volume changes. The Fe‐N@SSM‐Li displays a distinguished electrochemical performance, with superior lifespan of 5000, 2250, and 1350 h under 1 mA cm −2 /1 mAh cm −2 , 5 mA cm −2 /3 mAh cm −2 , and 20 mA cm −2 /3 mAh cm −2 in symmetric cells, respectively. Combined with this highly stable Fe‐N@SSM‐Li, the full cells using LiFePO 4 (LFP) and S/C cathodes both show significantly improved electrochemical performances. This work provides a low‐cost and scalable strategy for the construction of high‐efficiency Li anode with a novel 3D structure, offers new insights to the research of Li metal batteries and beyond.
