Abstract:Nitrogen-doped 3D graphene frameworks (N-3D GFs) were synthesized by a facile two-step method: Polystyrene (PS) encapsulated in graphene oxide (GO) composites (denoted as PS@GO) are first synthesized, followed by a post–thermal annealing in ammonia step to get N-doped 3D GFs. The resulting N-3D GFs inherit the advantages of graphene, which possesses high electrical conductivity and high specific surface area. Furthermore, the well-defined 3D interconnected structure can facilitate the access of the electrolyte to the electrode surface, thus shortening the diffusion length of both Li+/e−, keeping the overall electrode highly conductive and active in lithium storage. Simultaneously, the in-situ formation of pyridinic N and pyrrolic N in 3D GFs provide high electronic conductivity and structure stability for lithium storage. The designed N-3D GFs electrode delivers a high specific capacity of 1094 mAhg−1 after 100 cycles at 200 mAg−1 and superior rate capability (691 mAhg−1 after 500 cycles at 1000 mAg−1) when used as anode for LIBs. We believe that such an inherently inexpensive, scalable, facile method can significantly increase the feasibility of building high performance energy storage system.

Abstract:Mesoporous NiCo2O4 nanoneedle arrays on graphene film grown directly on a three-dimensional Ni foam have been fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method, accompanied by annealing under air atmosphere. The BET specific surface area of NiCo2O4@graphene film@Ni foam is as high as 47.65 m(2) g(-1). The porous composites served as a binder-free anode material for lithium-ion batteries display an excellent and stable electrochemical performance with high specific capacities of 1232 mAh g(-1) at the current density of 500 mA g(-1) over 100 cycles and 1493 mAh g(-1) at the current density of 1500 mA g(-1) after 230 cycles with Coulombic efficiency higher than 97%. Moreover, a fairly high rate capacity of 586 mAh g(-1) retained even at a high current density of 8000 mA g(-1). The outstanding electrochemical performance should be attributed to synergetic effect of NiCo2O4 nanoneedle arrays with mesoporous nature and high specific area as well as graphene substrate supporting, which can accommodate the volume variation during the electrochemical reactions and facilitate the ion and electron transmission.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous nitrogen-doped graphene frameworks (N-GFs) are fabricated through the ice-templating of GO with polyethylenimine and the thermal treatment of the resultant hybrids. As cathode materials in lithium ion batteries (LIBs), the obtained N-GFs exhibit an outstanding specific capacity of 379 mA h g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 for 2500 cycles. Even at an ultrahigh current density of 5 A g−1, the N-GFs maintain a capacity of 94 mA h g−1, superior to that of most reported LIB cathode materials. The experimental results and quantum mechanics calculations suggest that pyridinic-like N and pyridinic N-oxide in graphene are responsible for the excellent cathodic performance of the bipolar N-GFs by providing fast surface faradaic reactions with both p- and n-doped states.

Abstract:Bamboo-like WO3 nanorods were anchored on three-dimensional nitrogen-doped graphene frameworks (r-WO3/3DNGF) by a facile one-step hydrothermal synthesis plus heating processes. There is a strong dependence of the obtained r-WO3/3DNGF nanostructures on the content of 3DNGF. The composite with 20 wt% 3DNGF content shows the most favorable structure where bamboo-like WO3 nanorods lie flat on the surface of fungus-like 3DNGF, and exhibits a high discharge capacity of 828 mAh g(-1) over 100 cycles at 80 mA g(-1) with the largest capacity retention of 73.9% for WO3 and excellent rate capacities of 719, 665, 573, 453 and 313 mAh g(-1) at 80, 160, 400, 800 and 1600 mA g(-1), respectively. The electrochemical performance is better than most of reported WO3-based carbonaceous composites, which can be attributed to the synergistic effects of the following actions: i) WO3 nanorods effectively shorten the diffusion path of Li+; ii) mechanically strong 3DNGF alleviates the huge volume change of WO3 upon Li+ intercalation/extraction; and iii) nitrogen-doping in 3D graphene frameworks improves electronic conductivity and provides large numbers of lithium ion diffusion channels. Abstract:A new facile approach is proposed to synthesize nitrogen-doped graphene sheets with the nitrogen-doping level as high as 7.04 at.% by thermal annealing pristine graphene sheets and low-cost industrial material melamine. The high-level nitrogen-doped graphene sheets exhibit a superhigh initial reversible capacity of 1123 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 50 mA g(-1). More significantly, even at an extremely high current density of 20 A g(-1), highly stable capacity of about 241 mAh g(-1) could still be obtained. Such an electrochemical performance is superior to those previously reported nitrogen-doped graphene sheets. The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to the two-dimensional structure, disordered surface morphology, high nitrogen-doping level, and the existence of pyridinic nitrogen atoms. The results indicate that the high-level nitrogen-doped graphene sheets could be a promising anode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Ultrahigh N-doped porous carbon graphene nanosheets () with two-dimensional (2D) multilayer sandwich framework are elaborately designed from ZIF-8 nanoparticles in situ grown on graphene oxide (GO) with 2-methyimidazole and polyvinyl pyrrolidone added as nitrogen precursor through a facile one-step fast pyrolysis and explored in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). As the process-enhanced anode material, the provide a high capacity of 906.6 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.5 A g−1, and an average capacity of 378.2 mAh g−1 after an extremely long cycling durability over 1000 cycles at 5 A g−1. It is worth noting that the superior electrochemical performance of the electrode as the anode for LIBs confirms the reliability of the sufficient "point and plane" 2D sandwich framework, and a portion of the micropores and a large number of preferred mesoporous channels help to facilitate rapid charge transfer, which indicates that is a vibrant material that plays a key role in contributing to the application in future energy storage.

Abstract:An advanced architecture design of nitrogen-doped TiO2 anchored on nitrogen-doped 3D graphene framework composites (denoted as N-TiO2 /N-3D GFs) have been fabricated by a facile template process and further NH3 treatment. The 3D graphene framework allows the electrolyte to penetrate into the inverse opal structure, and possesses high electronic conductivity. The close contact between the N-TiO2 and the graphene suppresses the growth and aggregation of TiO2 nanoparticles during heating process, leading to decreased Li+ diffusion length. The N-doping in both TiO2 and the graphene matrix could improve the electronic conductivity on the TiO2 particle surface and between adjacent particles. As expected, when used as an anode for Li-ion batteries (LIBs), the N-TiO2 /N-3D GFs composite delivers an excellent reversible capacity of 165 mA h g-1 after 200 cycles at 100 mA g-1 and an outstanding rate capability of 114 mA h g-1 after 1000 cycles at 1 Ag-1 . With rational design, this strategy could be extended to other electrode materials that may hold great promise for the development of high energy storage systems.

Abstract:Although various anode materials have been reported, graphite is still a commercial anode material for lithium-ion batteries. In this study, nitrogen-doped carbon-coating graphite anode material with hollow structure is designed and fabricated through a facile and scalable process. This hollow structure constituted of graphite flakelets with disordered orientation inside can promote the penetration of electrolyte and shorten path of Li+ diffusion. The uniform N-doped carbon coating layer of NHG@C can significantly limit the side reaction between the organic electrolyte and superfine graphite inside and keep the electrode structure stability during charge and discharge. The obtained NHG@C anode material exhibits excellent rate capability in different current densities and displays a high reversible capacity of 304 mAh g−1 at a current density of 1A g−1 after 500 cycles. The excellent properties indicate that such a graphite-based anode material has a good prospect in the practical application of LIBs.

Growth of 3d Hierarchical Porous Nio@Carbon Nanoflakes on Graphene Sheets for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Nickel oxide (NiO) as one of the anode electrode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) has attracted considerable research attention. However, the poor electron conductivity and bad capacity retention performance greatly hinder its wide application. Herein, we prepared a novel three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous graphene@NiO@carbon composite via a simple solvothermal process, in which the graphene sheets were uniformly wrapped by porous NiO@carbon nanoflakes. In this case, nickelocene was creatively used as the precursor for both NiO and amorphous carbon, while graphene oxide sheets were employed as a template for the two-dimensional nanostructure and the conductive graphene backbone. The resultant composites possess high surface area (196 m(2) g(-1)) and large pore volume (0.46 cm(3) g(-1)). When it is applied as an anode for LIBs, the carbon outer-layer can effectively suppress the large volume change and serious aggregation of NiO nanoparticles during the charge-discharge process. Therefore, the graphene@NiO@carbon composites show a high reversible capacity of 1042 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 200 mA g(-1), an excellent rate performance and long cycle life. We believe that our method provides a new route for the fabrication of novel transition metal oxide composites.

Abstract:In this study, we report a simple method to prepare nitrogen-doped graphene, with which a nitrogen-doped graphene/SnO2 composite was successfully fabricated and employed as a lithium battery anode. Electrochemical test results indicated that the as-prepared nitrogen-doped graphene/SnO2 electrode possesses high reversible capacity and outstanding charging and discharging capabilities, which would make it possible to meet the requirements for portable electronic devices in the future. These super electrochemical properties could benefit from the synergistic effect of SnO2 nanoparticles that contribute to the high capacity and nitrogen-doped graphene that could enhance the electroconductivity. Moreover, the graphene nanosheet provides a large specific surface area for SnO2 nanoparticles to anchor on, which could efficiently overcome the structure destruction of SnO2-based electrodes during continuous charging and discharging tests. This concept can offer a general approach toward designing anode materials with better performance.

Abstract:Lithium metal is considered to be the most promising anode material for the next-generation rechargeable batteries. However, the uniform and dendrite-free deposition of Li metal anode is hard to achieve, hindering its practical applications. Herein, a lightweight, free-standing and nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber-based 3D structured conductive matrix (NCNF), which is characterized by a robust and interconnected 3D network with high doping level of 9.5 at%, is prepared by electrospinning as the current collector for Li metal anode. Uniform Li nucleation with reduced polarization and dendrite-free Li deposition are achieved because the NCNF with high nitrogen-doping level and high conductivity provide abundant and homogenous metallic Li nucleation and deposition sites. Excellent cycling stability with high coulombic efficiency are realized. The Li plated NCNF was paired with LiFePO 4 to assemble the full battery, also showing high cyclic stability.

Abstract:A facile synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) network of copper confined nitrogen‐doped graphene (NG)/carbon nanotube (CNT) with high atomic percentage of nitrogen (10.1 at.%) has been reported. The homogenous intercalation of the CNT network in-between the graphene layers decorated with copper nanoparticles take place which inhibits the self-agglomeration within the lattice and enhance the volumetric storage capability. The composite electrode demonstrates exceptionally high specific capacitance of 1250 mA h/g obtained at a current density of 0.1 A/g which is 3.4 times greater than the theoretical capacity of graphite (372 mA h/g). The discharge-charge profiles (from 0.002 to 3 V) with reversible battery capacity exhibit a stable state of the lithium-ion batteries which were observed at high rate capability of 420 mA h/g at a current density of 1 A/g even after 500 cycles. The enhancement of the electrochemical performance could be attributed to the 3D electrically conductive networks of copper confined nitrogen-doped graphene/carbon nanotubes ([N-Gr/CNT]).

Abstract:Due to the disadvantages of commercial graphite anode for high power lithium-ion batteries, a kind of spinel nano-lithium titanate (Li4Ti5O12) /graphene microsphere composite (denoted as LTO/rGO) is successfully synthesized. The as-prepared composite is made up of curled graphene sheets which are anchored with nano-Li4Ti5O12 particles. These nano-Li4Ti5O12 particles are uniformly decorated on the conductive graphene framework and its sizes range from just 15 nm to 20 nm. In the as-prepared composite, the curled graphene sheets form unique mesopore-oriented structure which provides plenty of three-dimension channels for ions transportation. These structure characters make the electron conductivity and Li+ diffusion ability both greatly improved. The ration of pseudocapacitive capacity dramatically increases in the obtained LTO/rGO composite and generates excellent ultrahigh rate performances. The as-prepared LTO/rGO composite delivers a reversible capacity of 70.3 mA h g-1 at 200C and a capacity retention of 84.7% after 1000 cycles at 50C. As the current density varies from 30C to 100C, the special capacity retains unchanged (about 112 mA h g-1). These results show that the graphene framework supported nano-Li4Ti5O12 composite has potential application in high power lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:We report the fabrication of monolithic quasi-graphene film with porous carbon frameworks (GPF), both nitrogen-doped, by a one-step pyrolysis of commercial filter membrane, and demonstrate its improved performance in Li-ion storage compared to commercial graphite. Several advantageous features (porous framework and its integrity with the quasi-graphene, N doping) of this new electrode are manifested by its high-rate and long-cycling rechargeable Li-ion storage. A high reversible capacity of 493mAhg−1 is achieved at a rate of 0.1C. And at a fast charge/discharge rate of 30C, the GPF electrode delivers a capacity of 220mAhg−1, which can last for up to 5000 cycles with nearly no capacity fading. We also demonstrate the GPF as a new type of current collector for active materials with improved mass loading and rate performance. The fabrication is cost effective, highly efficient, and scalable, and thus may pave way to new carbonaceous materials for high-performance energy storage.
