Abstract:The W-modified V-W/Ce/Ti-x% catalysts are prepared to investigate their selective catalytic reduction (SCR) activity. The V-W/Ce/Ti-5% with 5% WO3 loading shows superior NH3-SCR activity and higher ammonium bisulfate (ABS) resistance at 280 degrees C. The 5% WO3 doping can induce the isolated tetrahedrally coordinated vanadium species to transform into the oligomeric ones and strongly combine with neighboring V and Ce via synergetic interaction (V4+ + Ce4+ <-> V5+ + Ce3+ and W5+ + Ce4+ <-> W-64 + Ce3+), which favors the electron conduction among these active sites and significantly enhances the NOx conversion rate. Moreover, WO3 doping suppresses the formation of ABS and metal sulfate species over active sites by lowering the alkalinity of V-W/Ce/Ti-5%. The synergetic interaction through electron transfer can lower the thermal stability of ABS species and cause the NH3-SCR reaction between NO + O-2 and ABS to completely prohibit the formation of ABS because of the faster de-NOx conversion rate with 5% WO3 loading.
In Situ DRIFTS Studies of NH3-SCR Mechanism over V2O5-CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 Catalysts for Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx

Abstract:TiO2-ZrO2 (Ti-Zr) carrier was prepared by a co-precipitation method and 1 wt. % V2O5 and 0.2 CeO2 (the Mole ratio of Ce to Ti-Zr) was impregnated to obtain the V2O5-CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3. The transient activity tests and the in situ DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy) analyses were employed to explore the NH3-SCR (selective catalytic reduction) mechanism systematically, and by designing various conditions of single or mixing feeding gas and pre-treatment ways, a possible pathway of NOx reduction was proposed. It was found that NH3 exhibited a competitive advantage over NO in its adsorption on the catalyst surface, and could form an active intermediate substance of -NH2. More acid sites and intermediate reaction species (-NH2), at lower temperatures, significantly promoted the SCR activity of the V2O5-0.2CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst. The presence of O2 could promote the conversion of NO to NO2, while NO2 was easier to reduce. The co-existence of NH3 and O2 resulted in the NH3 adsorption strength being lower, as compared to tests without O2, since O2 could occupy a part of the active site. Due to CeO2’s excellent oxygen storage-release capacity, NH3 adsorption was weakened, in comparison to the 1 wt. % V2O5-0.2CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst. If NOx were to be pre-adsorbed in the catalyst, the formation of nitrate and nitro species would be difficult to desorb, which would greatly hinder the SCR reaction. All the findings concluded that NH3-SCR worked mainly through the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism.

Abstract:Ceria has absorbed extensive interests in functioning as catalysts for low-temperature (LT) selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx due to its abundant surface oxygen species and salient redox property. The mechanistic interpretations of how such redox property contributes to its LT-SCR activity, however, still remain debated. Here, we use a model tungsten-promoted ceria catalyst (WO3/CeO2), known as preeminent in LT-SCR reactions, and combine steady-state kinetic, structural characteristic and in situ spectroscopic experiments with theoretical treatments to reveal the mechanistic connections between NO oxidative activation and LT-SCR turnovers. We show that, compared with NO oxidation to NO2, NO oxidative activation to nitrite intermediates is both kinetically and thermodynamically more favorable; surface nitrate species are not detected in the present case, indicating their more difficult formation than nitrites. All these results thus suggest the prevalence of NO activation to nitrites over NO to nitrates or oxidation to NO2 and subsequent occurrence of fast SCR in the WO3/CeO2-catalyzed LT-SCR reaction. These findings progress the understanding of LT-SCR reaction mechanism on CeO2-based catalysts and convey a detailed perspective of different reaction intermediates and their consequences for LT-SCR turnovers, which may contribute to the rational design of catalysts towards further improved LT-SCR activity.

Abstract:WO3–CeO2–TiO2 catalysts for NO (nitrogen monoxide) reduction by ammonia were prepared by a sol–gel method. The catalysts were characterized by BET, XRD, Raman, NH3/NO adsorption and H2-TPR to investigate the relationships among the catalyst composition, structure, redox property, acidity and deNOx activity. WO3–CeO2–TiO2 catalysts show a high activity in a broad temperature range of 200–480°C. The low-temperature activity of catalysts is sensitive to the catalyst composition especially under low-O2-content atmospheres. It may be related to the synergistic effect between CeOx and WOx in the catalysts. On one hand, the interaction between ceria and tungsten oxide promotes the activation of gaseous oxygen to compensate the lattice oxygen consumed in NH3-SCR (selective catalytic reduction) reaction at low temperatures. Meanwhile, the Brønsted acid sites mainly arise from tungsten oxides, Lewis acid sites mainly arise from ceria. Both of the Brønsted and Lewis acid sites facilitate the adsorption of NH3 on catalysts and improve the stability of the adsorbed ammonia species, which are beneficial to the NH3-SCR reaction.

Abstract:The effect of synthesis methods on the activity of V/Ce/WTi catalysts was investigated for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by NH3. V/Ce/WTi-DP (deposition precipitation) catalyst showed excellent NH3-SCR performance, especially the better medium-temperature activity and the less N2O formation than V/Ce/WTi-IMP (impregnation). These catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brumauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), and in situ DRIFTS techniques. The XPS and H-2-TPR results revealed that V/Ce/WTi-DP exhibited more surface Ce species, higher level of O-alpha and higher reducibility of Ce species. Reflected by in situ DRIFTS results, the deposition precipitation method (DP) contributed to a greater amount of weakly adsorbed NO2, monodentate nitrate and NH3 species with better reactive activity. Meanwhile, the cis-N2O22- species, an intermediate for N2O formation, was very limited. As a result, these advantages brought about the superior SCR activity and N-2 selectivity for V/Ce/WTi-DP.
Mechanistic Insights into NH3-assisted Selective Reduction of NO on CeO2: a First-Principles Microkinetic Study on Selectivity and Activity.

Abstract:To understand the activity- and selectivity-limiting factors of selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3 (NH3-SCR) catalyzed by CeO2-based oxides, a molecular-level mechanistic exploration was performed on CeO2(110) using a first-principles microkinetic study. Herein, the favored reaction pathway for N-2 formation on CeO2(110) is unveiled, which includes three key subprocesses. (i) NH3 adsorbs on the Ce-cus site and dissociates into *NH2 assisted by O-lat; (ii) *NH2 preferentially couples with NO adsorbed on O-lat (ONO#), forming *NH2NO on the Ce-cus site; (iii) *NH2NO undergoes dehydrogenation into *NHNO, which can be easily anchored by O-vac and can then decompose into N-2. The quantitative microkinetic results show that the transfer of NHNO from Ce-cus to O-vac, rather than the further conversion of N2O to N-2 on O-vac, emerges as the N-2 selectivity-determining step on CeO2, in which O-vac plays a key role. The number of O-vac is an important factor determining the N-2 selectivity of CeO2-based catalysts. The sensitivity analysis reveals that NH2NO formation, i.e., *NH2 + ONO# -> *NH2NO + O#, is the rate-determining step for NH3-SCR on the CeO2 catalyst; accordingly, enhancing NH3 adsorption could be an effective strategy to boost the catalytic activity of CeO2 for NH3-SCR. In general, creating O-vac on CeO2 and introducing components (e.g., WO3) with strong NH3 adsorption would be efficient for designing CeO2-based catalysts with superior N-2 selectivity and activity. These results could provide a consolidated theoretical basis for understanding and optimizing CeO2-based catalysts for NH3-SCR.

Abstract:The mechanism of NH3-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) over a CeO2-WO3 catalyst was investigated by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) analysis and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The active sites were on CeO2, while WO3 greatly enhanced the amount and strength of the surface Bronsted acid sites and the NO oxidation ability. Both NH4+ and coordinated NH3 contributed to the SCR reaction. Bridging nitrate and monodentate nitrate were confirmed as the reactive nitrate species. Under SCR reaction conditions, surface NH4NO3 was formed, which played the role of an important intermediate species. Two different pathways for the SCR reaction were suggested for the CeO2-WO3 catalyst.
Discovering Surface Structure and the Mechanism of Graphene Oxide-Triggered CeO2-WO3/TiO2 Catalysts for NO Abatement with NH3

Abstract:Tricomponent cerium-tungsten-titanium catalysts have the potential for selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3, while the accurate modulating of the surface structure and the understanding of the atomic-level mechanism remain extremely challenging. To resolve the conundrum, here, we investigate the modular ternary catalysts through advanced spectroscopic and computational studies. It reveals that the introduction of graphene oxide induces a high dispersion of W and Ce species, resulting in the generation of amorphous W-O-Ce. and Ce-O-Ti-bonding structures on the surface. More importantly, the high dispersion of CeO2 facilitates the formation of abundant oxygen vacancies, which are mobile active sites for adsorption and activation of NO and NH3. Temperature-programmed desorption of NO (NO-TPD) and temperature-programmed desorption of NH3 (NH3-TPD) validate the feasibility of adsorption of NO and NH3 at low temperatures. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy of the transient reaction indicates that both NO2 and monodentate nitrate are active intermediates, which can react with the adsorbed NH3 to generate N-2 and H2O during catalysis. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), in situ Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) provide direct evidence for the presence of Ce, W, and Ti interactions. Theoretical simulations prove that the inherent interactions reliably accelerate the conversion efficiency of NOx to N-2 by improving the electron transfer on the surface. Furthermore, the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism is thermodynamically more feasible and predominant over the graphene oxide-triggered catalyst.
Low-temperature Activity and Mechanism of WO3-modified CeO2-TiO2 Catalyst under NH3-NO/NO2 SCR Conditions

Abstract:The CeO2-TiO2 (CeTi) and CeO2/WO3-TiO2 (CeWTi) catalysts were prepared by a sol-gel precipitation method and their NH3-NO/NO2 selective catalytic reduction (SCR) performance was studied. N2O formation and effect of oxygen concentration on SCR performance over CeWTi catalyst were also investigated while varying the NO2/NOx ratio. Results indicate that fast SCR behavior of CeWTi catalyst has the best NH3-NO/NO2 SCR performance due to the catalyst reoxidation rate by NO2 higher than by O2. Compared with CeTi catalyst, CeWTi catalyst exhibits higher de-NOx performance under NH3-NO/NO2 SCR conditions. As the CeTi and CeWTi catalysts exhibit similar redox property, addition of WO3 provides more acid sites which accelerate the reaction between NH4NO3 and NO to get a superior low-temperature activity. Amount of N2O formation shows a peak at 250 °C mainly derived from NH4NO3 decomposition.
Influence of CeO2 morphology on WO3/CeO2 catalyzed NO selective catalytic reduction by NH3

Abstract:WO3/CeO2 catalysts with different support morphologies were fabricated by incipient wetness technique and applied to selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3 (NH3-SCR). WO3/CeO2 rod (WCR) displayed higher catalytic activity and resistance to SO2 and H2O compared with WO3/CeO2 polyhedron (WCP) and WO3/CeO2 cube (WCC). N2-BET, XRD, Raman, H2-TPR, TEM, HRTEM, NH3-TPD, XPS and in situ DRIFTS were conducted to investigate the physicochemical properties of the catalysts and the adsorption of NH3 and NOx species on the catalytic surface. These characterization results demonstrated that the larger BET surface area, the smaller CeO2 particle size, the higher surface acidity, the more oxygen defects, the better redox performance, and the higher Ce3+ and Oα ratios of the catalysts played critical functions in obtaining more outstanding NH3-SCR catalytic performance. All of these characterization results were also closely related to the CeO2 morphology. The results of the in situ DRIFTS showed that the WCR had the highest intensities of the adsorbed NOx and NH3 species among these three catalysts. The reactions between adsorbed species attributed to NOx and NH3 on the catalyst surface can also be a key factor in the NH3-SCR catalytic performance enhancement.

Abstract:BackgroundAmmonia bisulfate (ABS) deposition on the active sites of the catalyst surface is the main reason for SO2 poisoning in low-temperature NH3-selective catalytic reduction (SCR). Accelerated ABS decomposition efficiently enhances the SO2 resistance.MethodsIn this work, ceria was specifically chosen to decorate V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst (Ce-VW/Ti) to activate ABS decomposition in low-temperature NH3-SCR.Significant findingsThe optimal 7Ce-VW/Ti catalyst accelerated the decomposition of ABS and had superior SO2 tolerance at 250°C. The additive CeO2 improved the specific surface area and surface acidity, favoring the NH3-SCR catalytic activity. ABS was preferentially deposited on the additive CeO2 on the surface of the 7Ce-VW/Ti catalyst and generated cerium sulfate, eventually protecting the active V2O5 sites and TiO2 support. Moreover, high quantity of V5+ and charge transfer between active species V2O5 and support TiO2 could be maintained due to CeO2 protection, subsequently maintaining the high NH3-SCR performance and enhancing the SO2 tolerance.

Abstract:Unraveling the dynamics of the active sites upon CeO2-based catalysts in selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia (NH3-SCR) is challenging. In this work, we prepared tungsten-acidified and sulfated CeO2 catalysts and used operando spectroscopy to reveal the dynamics of acid sites and redox sites on catalysts during NH3-SCR reaction. We found that both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites are needed to participate in the catalytic reaction. Notably, Brønsted acid sites are the main active sites after a tungsten-acidified or sulfated treatment, and the change of Brønsted acid sites significantly affects the NOx removal. Moreover, acid functionalization promotes the cerium species cycle between Ce4+ and Ce3+ for the NOx reduction. This work is critical to deeply understanding the natural properties of active sites, and it also provides new insights into the mechanism for NH3-SCR over CeO2-based catalysts.

Abstract:Elucidation of redox mechanism is vital to develop highly active catalysts for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx. Here, we apply an integrated experimental and theoretical approach to investigate low-temperature SCR (LT-SCR) mechanism over VOx/CeO2, a model system containing industrially-relevant vanadia active-species and an eye-catching redox support, i.e. ceria, frequently documented in SCR studies. We show that NO oxidative activation to a gaseous nitrite-precursor intermediate, which was trapped by BaO/Al2O3 and further spectroscopically and computationally validated, serves as a key step in LT-SCR. This scheme involves paired contributions from vanadia and ceria, in which vanadium stabilizes at +5 while Ce3+/Ce4+ varies in the redox cascade, and coupling of V5+−OH and proximal Ce4+−O reduces the NO oxidative activation barrier. These findings progress the understanding of LT-SCR mechanism and deliver a specific perspective on the synergy of surface active-sites and supports, which are essential for the design of further improved SCR catalysts.

Abstract:Environmentally benign CeO2-WO3/TiO2 catalysts are promising alternatives to commercial toxic V2O5-WO3/TiO2 for controlling NOx emission via selective catalytic reduction (SCR), but the insufficient catalytic activity of CeO2-WO3/TiO2 catalysts is one of the obstacles in their applications because of a lack of an in-depth understanding of the CeO2-WO3 interactions. Herein, we design a Ce1-W1/TiO2 model catalyst by anchoring Ce1-W1 atom pairs on anatase TiO2(001) to investigate the synergy between Ce and W in SCR. A series of characterizations combined with density functional theory calculations and in situ diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier-transform experiments reveal that there exists a strong electronic interaction within Ce1-W1 atom pairs, leading to a much better SCR performance of Ce1-W1/TiO2 compared with that of Ce1/TiO2 and W1/TiO2. The Ce1-W1 synergy not only shifts down the lowest unoccupied states of Ce1 near the Fermi level, thus enhancing the abilities in adsorbing and oxidizing NH3 but also makes the frontier orbital electrons of W1 delocalized, thus accelerating the activation of O2. The deep insight of the Ce-W synergy may assist in the design and development of efficient catalysts with an SCR activity as high as or even higher than V2O5-WO3/TiO2.
A Superior Cerium-Tungsten Bimetal Oxide Catalyst with Flower-Like Structure for Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO by NH3

Abstract:A novel flower-like 0.1%WO3/CeO2(f) catalyst with high-efficiency was fabricated for the selective reduction of NOx by NH3. In contrast to traditional WO3/CeO2, this catalyst exhibited a significant SCR performance of 90% NOx conversion and 95% N2 selectivity within a wide temperature range of 175-450.C and great H2O and/or SO2 resistance under a high GHSV of 177,000 h 1. A variety of analytical techniques including SEM, XRD, XPS, NH3-TPD, H2-TPR and in situ DRIFTS-MS were employed for the catalysts characterization to fully understand the reaction mechanism over WO3/CeO2 catalysts. It was found that the flower-like structure promoted a more uniform dispersion of tungsten species on the support and a stronger interaction between WO3 and CeO2, thereby increasing the acid sites and surface vacancies. Moreover, more chemical active oxygen and trivalent cerium species were presented on 0.1% WO3/CeO2(f). In situ DRIFTS-MS and H2-TPR revealed that the reducibility was optimized for 0.1% WO3/CeO2(f). Then NH3 oxidation species could react with gaseous or adsorbed NOx during Eley-Rideal (E-R) pathway for 0.1%WO3/CeO2(f) at a high temperature (300. C). Meanwhile, NOx was reduced into more active bridged nitrates participating in the reaction via Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) route, contributing to its superior deNOx performance. In comparison, the formation of inert adsorbed NH3 oxidization/ deformation species and bridged nitrates suppressed the SCR reaction over 0.1%WO3/CeO2, resulting in its inferior deNOx activity. This study not only provides a new strategy for developing high-efficiency ceria supported NH3-SCR catalyst, but also lays a foundation for investigating the reaction mechanism of cerium-based catalyst for further practical applications.
Brønsted Acid Enhanced Hexagonal Cerium Phosphate for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH3: in Situ DRIFTS and DFT Investigation.

Abstract:The possible effect of optimized acid sites on NH3-SCR performance and the fundamental mechanism are barely illustrated. In this work, we report two model catalysts of hexagonal (h-CPO) and monoclinic (m-CPO) cerium phosphate with disparate acidity that show different NH3-SCR activities under the same reaction conditions. Bronsted acid sites were found to be crucial for NH3-SCR performance at both low and high temperature. The electron localization discrepancy of h-CPO was more pronounced as compared with m-CPO, leading to the enrichment of P-OH (Bronsted acid site) which could strongly absorb NH3 and then generate NH4+ to participate in fast SCR via Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism, resulting in good activity at low temperature. The zeolitic water stored in the open channels of h-CPO could be released as supplement for P-OH sites which prevent the depletion and non-selective oxidation of NH3 thus maintaining its high activity at high temperature via the EleyRideal mechanism. Meanwhile, as DFT calculation revealed, cerium is the electron deficient center which can easily fix NO and NO2 from the intake, generating active NO2(ad) or nitrites and facilitating fast SCR by reacting with NH4+ species. Hence, the superior protonation ability to form P-OH and low energy barrier to generate active nitrites of h-CPO led its T80 NOx conversion to a broaden temperature of 150-450 oC under high GHSV of 177,000 h-1. Furthermore, experimental and DFT calculation also demonstrated that the enriched Bronsted acid sites over h-CPO have largely suppressed SO2 adsorption, thus significantly reducing the formation of metal sulfates and achieving great SO2 resistance. The ammonium sulfate deposits can be storage of NH3, supplying additional reductant to promote high temperature activity and selectivity.

Abstract:The occurrence of NH3-SCR (selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3) reaction on catalyst surface typically requires acid and redox sites. However, the role of acid-redox interaction on NH3-SCR performance is still obscure due to complex acidities and entangled acid-redox sites. Herein, three types of model Ce2(SO4)3-CeO2 catalysts with distinct interfaces are constructed to reveal the effect of acid-redox interaction on NH3-SCR performance. That is, SO4 2-/CeO2-VS (vapor sulfation of ceria) with strong acid-redox interfacial contact, SO4 2-/CeO2-WI (wet impregnation), and SO4 2-/CeO2-SG (solid grinding) with limited interfaces. It is found the redox property is significantly disturbed as a result of the electron-withdrawing effect from the sulfate. Theoretical result unravels that the introduction of Ce2(SO4)3 retards the oxygen vacancy formation over CeO2. Due to restricted interfaces in SO4 2-/CeO2-SG, the negative influence from acid sites is greatly alleviated. Further mechanism study discloses the weakened acid-redox interaction actually changes the nature of surface NOx species, resulting in the generation of reactive species (*O-N-O* and cis-N2O2 2-) and the promotion of surface reaction via Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism.

Effects of WOx Modification on the Activity, Adsorption and Redox Properties of CeO2 Catalyst for NOx Reduction with Ammonia

Abstract:A series of WO3/CeO2 (WO(x)/CeO2) catalysts were synthesized by wet impregnation of ammonium metatungstate on a CeO2 support. The resulting solid acid catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (in-situ FT-IR) of ammonia adsorption, NH3-TPD, H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), NH3/NO oxidation and activity measurements for NO(x) reduction by NH3 (NH3-SCR). The results show that polytungstate (WO(x)) species are the main species of tungsten oxide on the surface of ceria. The addition of tungsten oxide enhances the Brönsted acidity of ceria catalysts remarkably and decreases the amount of surface oxygen on ceria, with strong interaction between CeO2 and WO(x). As a result, the N2 selectivity of NH3 oxidation and NH3-SCR at high temperatures (> 300 degrees C) is enhanced. Therefore, a wide working temperature window in which NO(x) conversion exceeds 80% (NO(x) conversion > 80%) from 200 to 450 degrees C, is achieved over 10 wt.% WO(x)/CeO2 catalyst. A tentative model of the NH3-SCR reaction route on WO(x)/CeO2 catalysts is presented.
