Abstract:In this paper, a new refractive index sensor based on Fano resonance is introduced. It is mainly composed of two parts: a metal–insulator–metal as a base waveguide and an annular resonant cavity with a double notch and a double convex circle as a coupling structure. The sensing characteristics of the design are investigated via finite element calculations. The influence of the remaining structure parameters on the system’s sensing performance and the relationship between the wavelength corresponding to the Fano trough and the refractive index are also investigated. Furthermore, the structure is applied to refractive index sensors, resulting in a type with a sensitivity of 2740 nm/RIU and a figure of merit of 52.69.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel optofluidic refractive index (RI) sensor with high sensitivity and wide dynamic range based on partial reflection. Benefited from the divergent incident light and the output fibers with different tilting angles, we have achieved highly sensitive RI sensing in a wide range from 1.33 to 1.37. To investigate the effectiveness of this sensor, we perform a measurement of RI with a resolution of ca. 5.0×10–5 refractive index unit (RIU) for ethylene glycol solutions. Also, we have measured a series of liquid solutions by using different output fibers, achieving a resolution of ca. 0.52 mg/mL for cane surge. The optofluidic RI sensor takes advantage of the high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, small footprint, and low sample consumption, as well as the efficient fluidic sample delivery, making it useful for applications in the food industry.

Abstract:Optical sensors have a series of advantages, such as anti-interference, fast response, low power consumption, etc. Due to the diffraction limit, optical devices cannot be integrated on a large scale. spp can break through the limitations of traditional optical diffraction limits and manipulate light in the sub-wavelength range. Greatly advance the integration of optical devices. In this paper, a novel nano-sensor structure is proposed, which consists of an MIM waveguide with double rectangles and an annular cavity with embedded stubs. The sensing characteristics are simulated and analyzed by finite element method. In addition, we also analyze the triggers of the Fano resonance line and optimize it by adjusting the parameters. The maximum sensitivity is 1990 nm / RIU, and the advantage value is 63.2. This structure has broad application prospects in sensors in biomedicine and temperature detection.
Optical Refractive Index Sensor with Fano Resonance Based on Original MIM Waveguide Structure

Abstract:In recent years, optical refractive index sensors have received significant attention in the field of chemical and biological sensing owing to the advantages of small size. In order to achieve the requirements of small structure and high sensitivity of nano refractive index sensing, this paper proposes a Fano resonance–based waveguide structure in which a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure using surface plasmons and U-shaped cavities are coupled unilaterally. The transmittance spectrum of the waveguide-coupled resonator with different incident light wavelengths can be obtained. The U-shaped cavity and semi-annular straight waveguide are superimposed on and coupled to each other to form the Fano resonance transmittance spectrum. An extremely narrow impedance is formed in the transmittance spectrum. The proposed structure can obtain superior sensing performance at the nanoscale after the optimisation. The results confirm that the sensing sensitivity of the refractive index of the optimised waveguide structure can achieve up to 825 nm/RIU. The results of experiments show that this structure could accurately identify the five proposed pure edible vegetable oils at room temperature. But experiments have also shown that it could not effectively distinguish between the five proposed mixed edible vegetable oils. This structure provides an effective reference for the design and development of refractive index sensors for application to pure edible vegetable oils.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel nano-sized refractive index sensor based on the Fano resonance phenomenon. The main structure consists of two short tubes of the metal-insulation-metal waveguide and an internal Z-ring resonator. The authors used a finite element approach to analyze the nanoscale sensing performance of the system. Simulation results show that asymmetries in the geometry will lead to Fano resonance splitting. This paper explicitly explores whether the structure’s top and bottom asymmetry is a significant factor in the Fano resonance of the internal Z-ring resonator structure. After Fano resonance splitting, the obtained transmission curve was sharper, the bandwidth was significantly reduced, and the system’s figure of merit was significantly improved. This paper further extends the internal Z-ring resonator structure to the sensor field. The resulting refractive index sensor has a sensitivity of 2234 nm/RIU and a figure of merit of 49.65.

Abstract:This study conducts an in-depth discussion on the Fano resonance phenomenon and its application in optical sensors. A circular split ring was proposed. By designing a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide structure with specific geometric parameters, we successfully excited the Fano resonance, which produced a unique asymmetric Fano through the coupling of discrete and continuous states. Resonance transmission spectroscopy. The sensitivity of Fano resonance is extremely sensitive to changes in structural parameters. This characteristic provides a theoretical basis for the development of highly sensitive optical sensors. The simulation results show that by optimizing the structural parameters, high sensitivity Fano resonance characteristics can be obtained, further enhancing the performance of the optical sensor. The calculated sensitivity is as high as 1250 nm/RIU, and the figure of merit (FOM) reaches 54, indicating that the designed MIM waveguide structure has excellent sensing capabilities. This study not only demonstrates the potential of Fano resonance in improving sensor sensitivity, but also provides valuable guidance for the design and development of future optical sensors.

Abstract:Fano resonance is a sharp and asymmetric spectral feature that can be used for refractive index sensing. In this paper, we propose a Fano resonance sensor based on the coupling between a nanoring resonator and a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide. The nanoring resonator is fabricated in the middle of the MIM waveguide, and the two structures are coupled with high-field confinement. The transmission spectrum of the coupled structure shows a Fano resonance, which is sensitive to the refractive index of the surrounding medium. The sensitivity of the sensor is estimated to be 1700 nm/RIU, which is comparable to the sensitivities of other Fano resonance sensors. In addition, the designed sensor achieves the first-ever FOM and Q factor values of 4300.25 RIU −1 and 4310, respectively, for plasmonic MIM sensors. The proposed sensor is simple to fabricate and can be used for a wide range of refractive index sensing applications.

Abstract:With the continuous development of sensors and the continuous progress of detection technology, the optical sensors based on SPPs are expected to have an excellent prospects in the field of sensing. Herein, a novel refractive index sensor is presented, which consists of a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide with two rectangular baffles and circular ring cavity with a stub (CRCS). The characteristics of sensor are analyzed theoretically by finite element method. The simulation results showed that the narrow-band modes directly excited by the CRCS resonator interfere with the broad-band modes indirectly excited by the MIM waveguide, resulting in the formation of the Fano resonance phenomenon. A maximum sensitivity is 2520 nm/RIU and the figure of merit (FOM) is 61.46. The simple structure and high sensitivity lay a foundation for the application of high sensitivity plasmonic sensor in biomedical and temperature detection fields.

Abstract:A novel nano-refractive index sensor based on the Fano resonance phenomenon is proposed in this paper. The sensor consists of the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide and a V-ring cavity with a groove (VRCG). We analyzed the performance of the nanoscale sensor using the finite element method. The simulation results show that the asymmetry of the geometric structure itself is the main factor leading to Fano resonance splitting. In Fano splitting mode, the Fano bandwidth of the system can be significantly reduced when the sensor sensitivity is slightly reduced, so that the figure of merit (FOM) of the sensor can be substantially improved. Based on the above advantages, the sensor's sensitivity in this paper is as high as 2765 nm/RIU, FOM = 50.28. In addition, we further applied the sensor to alcohol concentration detection. The effect is good, and the sensitivity achieves about 150. This type of sensor has a bright future in the precision measurement of solution concentrations.

Abstract:This paper presents an innovative plasmonics-based refractive index sensor structure that consists of a circular ring containing a rectangular cavity (CRRC) and a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide with two rectangular stubs. The narrowband mode of the CRRC interacts with the broadband mode of the bus waveguide stub to generate sharp and asymmetric Fano resonance. The transmission characteristics were simulated using the finite element method. A maximum refractive-index sensor sensitivity of 2300 nm/RIU and figure of merit (FOM) of 57.5 were achieved. The proposed structure is simple yet highly sensitive and has the potential to be useful in detecting electrolyte concentration in blood. The results of this study provide a foundation for developing highly sensitive plasmonic sensors biomedical applications.

Abstract:Refractive index (RI) measurements are pertinent in concentration and biomolec-ular detection. Accordingly, an ultrasensitive optofluidic coupled Fabry-Perot (FP) capillary sensor based on the Vernier effect for RI sensing is proposed. Square capillaries integrated with the coupled FP microcavity provide multiple microfluidic channels while reducing the complexity of the fabrication process. The incoherent light source and spectrometer used during measurement facilitate the development of a low-cost sensing system. An ultrahigh RI sensitivity of 51709.0 nm/RIU and detection limit of 2.84 x 10-5 RIU are experimentally demonstrated, indicating acceptable RI sensing performance. The proposed sensor has significant potential for practical and low-cost applications such as RI, concentration, or biomolecular sensing.

Abstract:A four-wave mixing (FWM)-based refractive index sensor for potential microfluid sensing applications was proposed and analyzed in theory and experiment. The RI sensitivity of 6238.90 nm/RIU was obtained with a highly nonlinear microstructured fiber shortened to 60 mm, and the RI sensing resolution is as high as 2.2 x 10(-5) RIU. By choosing an appropriate wavelength domain, the signal wavelength for RI sensing is considerably more stable, and the sensing figure of merit is much higher than others. Finally, an inline FWM-based microfluid RI sensor with microslot structures constructed by femtosecond laser ablation was fabricated successfully. (C) 2019 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Abstract:Herein, a refractive-index sensor is theoretically proposed, which comprises metal-insulator-metal waveguide and single rectangle cavity without a long side (RCWALS). The propagation characteristics were analyzed by finite element method. Compared with the contrastive structure, the designed single RCWALS structure has better transmission spectra and stronger resonance and supports Fano resonance. The effects of the structural parameters on sensing characteristics were investigated. Mode 1 of single RCWALS structure has better performance parameter, which is the best sensitivity of 1840 nm/RIU with a figure of merit of 51.11. Additionally, three derived structures are presented, which are composed of MIM waveguide and two RCWALS in different positions. They have lower sensitivity but better figure of merit, and provide more detection positions. The designed structures, which are greatly simple, can potentially apply to nanophotonics.

Abstract:A plasma refractive index nanosensor based on Fano resonance is designed, which is composed of the metal-insulator-metal waveguide with a stub coupled with a split-square resonator. Analysis of transmission characteristics of the sensor's structure is performed using the finite element method, and the influences of the structural parameters on the sensing characteristics of the sensor arc studied. The calculated results show that the structure can excite the Fano resonance, and the resonance peak wavelength and line type can be adjusted by changing the key parameters. By adjusting the structural parameters, the sensitivity of the structure is up to 1125.7 nm/RIU and the figure of merit is 30.01. The results indicate that the proposed structure can be applied to optical integrated circuits, especially in nanometer biosensors.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel nano-scale refractive index sensor consisting of a MIM waveguide and a Petal with flower-core ring resonator (PWFCRR). The sensing performance of the petal-like structure was reasonably analyzed by using the finite element analysis method combined with the Fano resonance phenomenon in the optical process. After adjusting the structural parameters, the petal-like structure with the optimal sensing performance was obtained by comparison. Further simulation results show that the sensitivity of the final petal-like structure is as high as 2000nm/RIU, and the Figure of merit (FOM) of the system is 47.62. This will provide a new option for high-precision refractive index measurement, which has extraordinary prospects in the field of optical detection.

Abstract:Here in, a tunable nano refractive index sensor structure consisting of a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide with a metal stub coupled with a protractor type half ring cavity (PTHRC) is designed based on surface plasmon polaritons. The propagation characteristics of the plasmonic waveguide coupled system is analyzed by using finite element method (FEM). The sharp asymmetric Fano resonance in the transmission spectrum is generated by the interaction between narrow discrete mode of the PTHRC and wide continuous mode of the metal stub on the waveguide, which is demonstrated by simulation results. At the same time, the influence of diverse arguments on the performance of the nano-sensor system is analyzed, and the shape and position of the formant can be adjusted by changing the key arguments. The maximum sensitivity and FOM of the refractive-index sensor is 1600 nm/RIU and 50. The investigation has potential application prospect in optical integrated circuit and it also provides a tunable and easy to fabricate structure choice for nano-biosensors and other fields.

Abstract:We present a novel refractometric sensor based on a coated all-coupling optical-fiber-nanowire microcoil resonator which is robust, compact, and comprises an intrinsic fluidic channel. We calculate the device sensitivity and find its dependence on the nanowire diameter and coating thickness. A sensitivity as high as 700 nm/RIU and a refractive index resolution as low as 10(-10) are predicted.

Abstract:This paper presents a new refractive index sensor based on the Fano resonance in optical phenomena. The sensor has two main parts: a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) as the base waveguide and a V -shaped ring resonant cavity with a convex outer ring (VRROR) as the coupling structure. The sensing characteristics of the structure are rationalized by applying the finite element method, and the specific effects of the various parameters in the structure on the sensitivity(S) and superiority of the VRROR are analyzed. The final sensitivity of the VRROR type sensor reaches 2960 nm/RIU, and the figure of merit (FOM) under the corresponding system reaches 51.3.

Abstract:A novel nanosensor based on a metal-insulator-metal waveguide coupled to a double ring resonator is proposed. The spectral characteristics are studied by finite element method, and a Fano resonance (FR) formed by the interference of the narrowband mode and the broadband mode is discovered. After analyzing the effects of structural parameters on the transmission characteristics, the structure is further optimized by adding a rectangular cavity inside the ring cavity. The maximum sensitivity reaches 1885 nm/RIU with the figure of merit (FOM) of 77. Additionally, a tunable multiple FR system is realized through the derivative structure, which leads to the splitting of the resonance mode and produces two new narrowband modes. Their formation mechanism and performance are studied through a normalized magnetic field distribution and transmission spectrum. The designed structure with excellent performance can discover significant applications in the future nanosensing domain.

Abstract:We present a novel fiber-optic refractive index (RI) sensor based on a short piece of fused-silica micro-capillary (FSC) spliced between single mode fibers (SMFs). The sensing element is the tubing wall of the FSC where multiple modes excited from the lead-in SMF interfere to form fringes that are collected by the lead-out SMF. Two types of sensors with symmetric and asymmetric structures are fabricated and tested. A single lead-in SMF is used in the symmetric structure, whereas two lead-in SMFs are used in the asymmetric structure. Experimental results show that both types of sensors have high RI sensitivities, the symmetric structure sensor has a quadrature response with a higher sensitivity in the tested RI range from 1.33 to 1.37, and the asymmetric structure has a linear RI response with a sensitivity of 580.41 nm/RIU in the same RI range. The RI sensing platform demonstrated here can be further developed as a miniaturized fiber optic biosensor for biological and biochemical analysis.
