Abstract:Liquid crystalline organic semiconductors have garnered significant attention in the realm of organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) due to their inherent controllability of phase and electrical properties with temperature variations. Typically, liquid crystalline semiconductors possess distinct structures comprising rigid anisotropic cores and flexible chains. Here, we sought to identify liquid crystalline semiconductor materials by appending a thiophene ring and octyl chain to the anisotropic 6-(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[b]thiophene (TBT) backbone. Among the investigated TBT derivatives, the compound featuring additional thiophene ring and octyl chains on both sides exhibited pronounced liquid crystalline characteristics, specifically the SmE phase. The optical, thermal, and electrical characteristics as well as thin film properties of the TBT derivatives were investigated. The TBT compound was employed through solution-shearing as an active layer for top-contact/bottom-gate OTFTs. The liquid-crystalline TBT (2,6-bis(5-octylthiophen-2-yl)benzo[b]thiophene) thin film annealed at low temperature (30 °C) showed hole mobility as high as 0.025 cm2/Vs and current on/off ratio of > 106. This results in a significant enhancement by an order of magnitude compared to the sample annealed at 70 °C in the SmE phase, and nearly a two-fold improvement compared to the performance observed in the sample annealed at 130 °C in the transition phase. The utilization of the TBT derivative as a p-channel material represents a significant step toward the development of novel liquid crystalline semiconductors.

Abstract:An air‐stable calamitic liquid crystalline material, 2‐(4‐dodecyl phenyl)[1]benzothieno[3,2‐b]benzothiophene (C12‐Ph‐BTBT), is designed with a highly ordered smectic X (SmX) (X = K or H) phase demonstrating high charge‐carrier mobility and thermal stability in thin‐film transistors. Organic thin‐film transistors show mobilities as high as 8.7 cm2 V−1 s−1 when the C12‐Ph‐BTBT thin film is annealed at its SmX phase before the electrode deposition. Structural characterization reveals that the as‐deposited C12‐Ph‐BTBT thin films adopt a unilamellar structure. On the other hand, after polycrystalline thin films of C12‐Ph‐BTBT exhibit bilayer structure after annealing at the temperature of the SmX and the smectic E phases. The highest charge‐carrier mobility is observed when the C12‐Ph‐BTBT thin films are annealed at the SmX phase before the electrode deposition. The results give insight into the understanding of the nature of the mesophase behavior of liquid‐crystalline semiconductors and can aid the rational design of self‐organizing molecular semiconductors.
Asymmetric Conjugated Molecules Based on [1]Benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene for High-Mobility Organic Thin-Film Transistors: Influence of Alkyl Chain Length

Abstract:Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (BTBT)-based asymmetric conjugated molecules, that is, 2-(5-alkylthiophen-2-yl)[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (BTBT-Tn, in which T and n represent thiophene and the number of carbons in the alkyl group, respectively). All of the molecules with n ≥ 4 show mesomorphism and display smectic A, smectic B (n = 4), or smectic E (n > 4) phases and then crystalline phases in succession upon cooling from the isotropic state. Alkyl chain length has a noticeable influence on the microstructures of vacuum-deposited films and therefore on the performance of the organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). All molecules except for 2-(thiophen-2-yl)[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene and 2-(5-ethylthiophen-2-yl)[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene showed OTFT mobilities above 5 cm2 V-1 s-1. 2-(5-Hexylthiophen-2-yl)[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene and 2-(5-heptylthiophen-2-yl)[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene showed the greatest OTFT performance with reliable hole mobilities (μ) up to 10.5 cm2 V-1 s-1 because they formed highly ordered and homogeneous films with diminished grain boundaries.

Abstract:Organic semiconductors are inherently soft, making it possible to increase their mobilities by strains. Such a unique feature can be exploited directly in flexible electronics for improved device performance. The 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]-benzothiophene derivative, C8-BTBT is one of the best small-molecule hole transport materials. Here, we demonstrated its band structure modulation under strains by combining the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and first-principles calculations. We found that the C8-BTBT lattice undergoes a transition from monoclinic to triclinic crystal system at the temperature below 160 K. Both shear and uniaxial strains were applied to the low-temperature triclinic phase of C8-BTBT, and polymorphism was identified in the shear process. The band width enhancement is up to 8% under 2% of compressive strain along the x direction, and 14% under 4% of tensile strain along the y direction. The band structure modulation of C8-BTBT can be well related to its herringbone packing motifs, where the edge to face and edge to edge pairs constitute two-dimensional charge transport pathways and their electronic overlaps determine the band widths along the two directions respectively. These findings pave the way for utilizing strains towards improved performance of organic semiconductors on flexible substrates, for example, by bending the substrates.

Abstract:<p>First examples of multichain (polycatenar) compounds, based on the π‐conjugated [1]benzothieno[3,2‐<i>b</i>]benzothiophene unit are designed, synthesized, and their soft self‐assembly and charge carrier mobility are investigated. These compounds, terminated by the new fan‐shaped 2‐brominated 3,4,5‐trialkoxybenzoate moiety, form bicontinuous cubic liquid crystalline (LC) phases with helical network structure over extremely wide temperature ranges (>200 K), including ambient temperature. Compounds with short chains show an achiral cubic phase with the double network, which upon increasing the chain length, is at first replaced by a tetragonal 3D phase and then by a mirror symmetry is broken triple network cubic phase. In the networks, the capability of bypassing defects provides enhanced charge carrier mobility compared to imperfectly aligned columnar phases, and the charge transportation is non‐dispersive, as only rarely observed for LC materials. At the transition to a semicrystalline helical network phase, the conductivity is further enhanced by almost one order of magnitude. In addition, a mirror symmetry broken isotropic liquid phase is formed beside the 3D phases, which upon chain elongation is removed and replaced by a hexagonal columnar LC phase.</p>

Abstract:Due to their special polar structure, amphiphilic molecules are simple to process, low in cost and excellent in material properties. Thus, they can be widely applied in the preparation of functional film materials and bionics related to cell membranes. Therefore, amphiphilic organic semiconductor materials are receiving increasing attention in research and industrial fields. The structure of organic amphiphilic semiconductor molecules usually consists of three functional parts: a hydrophilic group, a hydrophobic group, and a linking group between them. The adjustment of their correlation to achieve the target performance is particularly important and needs experimental discussion regarding synthetic methodologies. In this work, we focused on the engineering of a substituent alkyl-chain, and an amphiphilic functional molecule (benzo[b]benzo[4,5] thieno[2,3-d]thiophene, named C(n)PA-BTBT, n = 3-11) was proposed and synthesized. This molecule links the hydrophobic semiconductor backbone and hydrophilic polar group through alkyl chains of different lengths. Fundamental properties were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) to conform the structure and the band gap properties of the designed organic semiconductor. Thermodynamic features were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and corresponding differential thermal gravity (DTG), which indicate that the functional molecule C(n)PA-BTBT (n = 3-11) has a great stability in ambient conditions. Moreover, the results show that the binding ability of the amphiphilic molecule to water molecules was regulated by the odd-even alternating effect of the alkyl chain and the intramolecular coupling with BTBT. Furthermore, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM) were used to study the material properties in detail. As the length of the alkyl chain increased, the functional molecule C(n)PA-BTBT (n = 3-11) gradually changed from "hard" species with no thermodynamic changes to a transition one with a pair of thermodynamic peaks, and eventually to a "soft" one as a typical liquid crystal with clear observation of Maltese-cross spherulites. The cooling and freezing points were further studied, and the values and trends of their enthalpy and corresponding temperature fluctuated and alternated due to the volume effect, odd-even alternating effect, flexibility, and other functions of the alkyl chain. Three molecular models were proposed according to the thermodynamic study results, namely the brick-like model, transition model, and liquid crystal model. This work presents in-depth discussion on material structure and corresponding thermodynamic properties, and it is an experimental basis for the design, synthesis, optimization, and screening of target performance materials.
Synergistic Manipulation of Phase Transition Between Cocrystallization and Microphase Segregation in Conjugated Triblock Copolymers for Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Abstract:Compared to the impressive advances achieved in coil-coil block copolymers (BCPs) capable of crystallization, advances in conjugated rod-rod BCPs are somewhat limited owing to their semirigid characteristics. The ability to tune crystallization and microphase segregation in this class of BCPs enables efficient control of the microstructures and the physical and optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report the effective manipulation of the cocrystallization and microphase segregation in a series of conjugated triblock copolymers through meticulous control of the length of the middle amorphous block at the molecular level and scrutinize the close correlation between their crystalline structures and charge transport properties. Specifically, a family of poly(3-hexylthiophene)-block-poly[3-(6-bromohexyl)-thiophene]-block-poly(3-decylthiophene) (P3HT-b-P3BrHT-b-P3DT) BCPs was designed and synthesized, in which the central P3BrHT had a low rigidity and negligible crystalline property compared with the two outer P3HT and P3DT blocks. The shorter P3BrHT was favorable to the cocrystallization of the two outer P3HT and P3DT. Moreover, the phase transition from the cocrystallization of P3HT and P3DT to their microphase segregation was facilitated by increasing the length of the central P3BrHT (intrinsic factor) in conjunction with slow solvent evaporation and thermal treatment (extrinsic factors). Finally, the different crystalline structures of P3HT-b-P3BrHT-b-P3DT are strongly correlated with their optical and charge transport properties. This study provides insights into cocrystallization and microphase segregation in conjugated BCPs via meticulous molecular design at the molecular level and external processing strategies.

Abstract:Solution processed small molecule polycrystalline thin films often suffer from the problems of inhomogeneity and discontinuity. Here, we describe a strategy to solve these problems through deposition of the active layer from a blended solution of crystalline (2-phenyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene, Ph-BTBT) and liquid crystalline (2-(4-dodecylphenyl) [1]benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophene, C12-Ph-BTBT) small molecule semiconductors with the hot spin-coating method. Organic thin film transistors with average hole mobility approaching 1 cm2/V s, much higher than that of single component devices, have been demonstrated, mainly due to the improved uniformity, continuity, crystallinity, and stronger intermolecular π-π stacking in blend thin films. Our results indicate that the crystalline/liquid crystalline semiconductor blend method is an effective way to enhance the performance of organic transistors.
Influence of Core Substitution on the Electronic Structure of Benzobisthiadiazoles

Abstract:Benzobisthiadiazoles (BBTs) are promising organic semiconductors for applications in field effect transistors and solar cells, since they possess a strong electron-accepting character. Thereby the electronic structure of organic/metal interfaces and within thin films is essential for the performance of organic electronic devices. Here, we study the structural and the electronic properties of two BBTs, with different core substitution pattern, a phenyl (BBT-Ph) and thiophene (BBT-Th) derivative adsorbed on Au(111) using vibrational and electronic high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy in combination with state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations. In the mono- and multilayer both BBTs adopt a planar adsorption geometry with the molecular backbone as well as the phenyl and thiophene side groups are oriented parallel to the gold substrate. The energies of the lowest excited electronic singlet states and the first triplet state (T1) are determined. The optical gap is found to be 2.2 eV for BBT-Ph and 1.6 eV for BBT-Th. The energy of T1 is identified to be 1.2 eV in BBT-Ph and in the case of BBT-Th 0.7 eV. Thus, both the optical gap size as well as the T1 energy are drastically reduced in BBT-Th compared to BBT-Ph. Based on our quantum chemical calculations this is attributed to the electron-rich nature of the five-membered thiophene rings in conjunction with their preference for planar geometries. Variation of the substitution pattern in BBTs opens the opportunity for tailoring their electronic properties.

A chrysene-based liquid crystalline semiconductor for organic thin-film transistors

Abstract:We report the synthesis and characterization of a non-liquid crystalline material, 2-phenylchrysene (Ph-CHR), and a liquid crystalline material, 2-(4-dodecyl phenyl)chrysene (C12-Ph-CHR), and discuss their organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) device performances. The concept of designing chrysene derivatives is derived from the similar electronic structure of chrysene and [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (BTBT), which is a very famous core for organic semiconductors. OTFTs, based on Ph-CHR and C12-Ph-CHR, are fabricated by vacuum-deposition on octyltrichlorosilane (OTS(8)) treated Si/SiO2 substrates. Our experimental results show that OTFTs based on Ph-CHR possess higher mobility than OTFTs based on BTBT derivative 2-phenyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (Ph-BTBT). The liquid crystalline material C12-Ph-CHR achieves the highest carrier mobility of up to 3.07 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) with an on/off ratio of 3.3 x 10(6) for polycrystalline organic thin-film transistors in ambient air. The results indicate that the chrysene derivative C12-Ph-CHR is a promising candidate for applications in electronic devices.

Abstract:The phase transition behavior of a thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol (BP), and chlorohydroquinone (CH) with 1,4-bis(4-fluorobenzoyl)benzene (BF) has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The copolymer exhibits multiple first order phase transitions, which are associated with crystal-to-smectic liquid crystal transition and smectic liquid crystal-to-isotropic transition. When the cooling rate is low (<10<degrees>C/min), only stable crystal from I is formed. With the cooling rate being high (>20 degreesC/min), the metastable crystal form II is formed, which always coexists with form I. The liquid crystalline phase plays an important role in the formation of metastable phase form II.

Abstract:The development of blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) materials with a wide temperature range is of great significance for practical applications in the optoelectronic field. In the study, bent-core derivatives with a 3-hexyl-2,5-disubstituted thiophene central ring in the λ-shaped molecular structure were designed and synthesized. Their mesomorphic behavior and effect on the blue-phase (BP) temperature range were investigated. Interestingly, a BP was achieved both during the heating and cooling processes by doping with a proper concentration of chiral compound into the thiophene bent-shaped molecule with high rigidity, while derivatives with fluorine atom substitution only exhibited cholesteric phase no matter how many chiral compounds were added. This result proved that BP is highly sensitive to the molecular structures of bent-shaped molecules. Moreover, the BP temperature range was broadened when adding these molecules into a BPLC host, which thus improved the BP temperature range from the initial value, no more than 4 °C, to as much as 24 °C. The experimental phenomena were reasonably explained through molecular simulation calculations. The study may provide some experimental basis and theoretical guidance for the design of novel bent-shaped molecules and BPLC material with a wide temperature range.

Abstract:Two n-type molecular organic semiconductors (TI-BDF1 and TI-BDF2) consisting of thiophene-substituted indolin-2-one (TI) and benzodifurandione (BDF) with different branched side-chains have been synthesized to study the effect of molecular structure on molecular order, liquid crystal (LC) properties, and charge-transport. By tuning the branching point of the side-chains, TI-BDF2 shows a preferable edge-on p-face orientation and a high degree of liquid crystallinity, resulting in 4 orders of magnitude higher electron mobility than that of TI-BDF1. Subsequent n-doping of TI-BDF2 thin film with a thermally stable phosphonium salt affords a high electrical conductivity of 0.4 S cm(-1).

Abstract:2-(4-(octyloxy) phenyl)[1] benzothieno[3,2-b][1] benzothiophene (C8-OPh-BTBT), a liquid crystal material, is designed and successfully synthesized by introducing an alkoxy side chain of BTBT core. The organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) based on C8-OPh-BTBT are fabricated to investigate the charge transport properties and compare with that of the alkyl side chain substituted semiconductor such as C12-Ph-BTBT. The highest mobility of 8.25 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) in C8-OPh-BTBT-based OTFTs is obtained when fabricated at a highly ordered Smectic X (X = K or H, SmX) liquid crystal phase, which is attributed to the formation of a bilayer structure of the organic semiconductor. Notably, the mobility of alkyoxy-substituted C8-OPh-BTBT-based OTFTs is much higher than that of alkyl-substituted C12-Ph-BTBT based OTFTs, while decreasing the operating threshold voltage. This study reveals that the introduction of alkoxy side chain of BTBT core is an effective way to alleviate the high threshold voltage and improve the charge mobility, which indicates that C8-OPh-BTBT-based OTFTs have the potential in practical applications.

Abstract:The back cover illustrates the morphology and molecular packing of liquid-crystalline C12-Ph-BTBT films with or without annealing at the SmX phase, as described by Y. He et al. in article number 1600179. After annealing, the structure of the thin films is transformed from a unilamellar to bilayer structure, which is similar to the structure of single crystal. Organic thin-film transistors based on annealed thin films of C12-Ph-BTBT show high mobility.

Abstract:Organic conjugated materials have shown attractive applications due to their good optoelectronic properties, which enable them solution processing techniques in organic optoelectronic devices. Many conjugated materials have been investigated in polymer solar cells and organic field-effect transistors. Among those conjugated materials, Benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDT) is one of the most employed fused-ring building groups for the synthesis of conjugated materials. The symmetric and planar conjugated structure, tight and regular stacking of BDT can be expected to exhibit the excellent carrier transfer for optoelectronics. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of BDT-based conjugated polymers in optoelectronic devices. BDT-based conjugated materials are classified into onedimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) BDT-based conjugated polymers. Firstly, we introduce the fundamental information of BDT-based conjugated materials and their application in optoelectronic devices. Secondly, the design and synthesis of alkyl, alkoxy and aryl-substituted BDT-based conjugated polymers are discussed, which enables the construction of one-dimensional and two-dimensional BDTbased conjugated system. In the third part, the structure modification, energy level tuning and morphology control and their influences on optoelectronic properties are discussed in detail to reveal the structure- property relationship. Overall, we hope this review can be a good reference for the molecular design of BDT-based semiconductor materials in optoelectronic devices.
Novel liquid crystalline conjugated oligomers based on phenanthrene for organic thin film transistors

Abstract:Three thiophene/phenanthrene hybrid oligomers were synthesized and their liquid crystalline (LC) properties were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron diffraction. Highly ordered LC phases with a broad temperature range were observed for all three oligomers probably owing to the absence of symmetry against the long axis of phenanthrene unit. Highly ordered smectic LC thin films were prepared by vacuum deposition and their organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) exhibited high mobilities up to 0.34 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). Solution processed films showed self-healing behaviors upon thermal annealing, and OTFTs prepared by solution drop casting showed mobilities up to 0.05 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). These results indicate that thiophene/phenanthrene hybrid oligomers are promising high mobility organic semiconductors for OTFTs.
