Abstract:Multicolored fluorescence stemed from the nonconventional luminescent polymers without aromatic units is an interesting and meaningful property. So far, a few such polymers bearing multicolored fluorescence are reported; its species, however, are relatively little. Herein, we synthesized a kind of novel water-soluble hyperbranched poly(amine ester) (HPAE) via a straightforward transesterification polycondensation reaction using inexpensive and easily available chemicals. Intriguingly, the pure HPAE could emit blue, green and red luminescence when irradiated by different excitation wavelengths. The TEM result shows that the synergy effect of intra-/intermolecular hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic effect could induce the HPAE to self-assemble and form supramolecular HPAE in water. Such supramolecular HPAE further promote to form stronger through-space conjugation, thus which is favourable for the emission. In addition, the significant solvent and pH dependence profiles of luminescence intensity are also observed. In particular, the HPAE can be used to detect metal ions, and there is strong selective quenching in respect of Fe3+. Therefore, the HPAE show a potential probe for Fe3+.

Abstract:This paper presents a new synthetic route to hyperbranched polymer. An arylene bipropiolate monomer, dimethylmethylenebis(1,4-phenylene) bipropiolate, was prepared by a one-step esterification reaction of bisphenol A with propiolic acid. Polycyclotrimrtization of the monomer was effected by reflux in dimethylformamide (DMF), producing a soluble hyperbranched poly(aroxycarbonylphenylene) in a good yield. The polymer was perfectly branched with a degree of branching of 100%.
Supramolecular Hyperbranched Poly(amino Ester)s with Homogeneous Electron Delocalization for Multi‐Stimuli‐Responsive Fluorescence

Abstract:Nonconventional luminogens without conjugated chromophores have attracted much interest for their intriguing fluorescence and potential wide applications. Their emission mechanism, however, remains an open question. Herein, hyperbranched poly(amino ester) (HPAE) with novel structure is synthesized through a simple one-pot polycondensation reaction. The HPAE exhibits strong fluorescence and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic. Transmission electron microscopy and theoretical calculation results demonstrate that the fluorescence is attributed from electron delocalization in the supramolecular self-assemblies of HPAE. Meanwhile, supramolecular self-assemblies, induced by the synergy effect of inter/intramolecular hydrogen bond and amphipathicity of HPAE, rigidify the molecule conformation, leading to enhanced fluorescence. Furthermore, the HPAE exhibits single-color emission due to its generation of homogeneous electron delocalization. Interestingly, such HPAE shows multi-stimuli-responsive fluorescence to solvent, temperature, pH, and Fe3+. Therefore, this work not only provides an important step forward in exploring the emission mechanism of nonconventional luminogens, but also develops a multi-functional unconjugated AIE probe.

Abstract:Water-soluble hyperbranched copoly(ester-amine)s with various degree of branching (DB) were prepared via the "A(2)+B-2+BB'(2)" approach. Due to the faster reaction between A and B functional groups, the intermediate containing one A group and two B' groups was generated in situ. Further self-polyaddition of the AB'(2) intermediate gave hyperbranched polymer. In this communication, A, is ethylene diacrylate (EDA), B-2 is piperazine (PZ), and BB'(2) is 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AP). The combination of mass spectrum and in situ FTIR determined the reaction mechanism and propagating paths predicted. DB of the resulting branched poly (ester-amine)s decreases with increasing the feed ratio of PZ to AP. In the same molecular weight, the inherent viscosity of the polymers presented here increases with decreasing DB. The simplicity of the reaction process, the controllability of the architecture, and the commercially availability of the raw materials would make this approach attractive in the large scale manufacture and application of hyperbranched polymer materials.

Abstract:Based on the principle of non-equal reactivity of functional groups (NERFG), a hyperbranched polymer was synthesized from commercially available monomers. In this work, asymmetrical hyperbranched polyamido-ester was prepared by using benzene-1 2, 4-tricarboxylic acid-1,2-anhydride and N-(2-hydroxyethyl) piperazine as raw, materials depending on the different reactivity between amino and hydroxyl groups. The structure of-the resulting polymer was confirmed by FTIR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The hyperbranched polymer holds alternating amido, tertiary amino and ester units in its macromolecular frame, and is highly soluble in water. The simplicity of the synthesis process and availability of the raw materials would make this approach attractive for the large-scale fabrication of hyperbranched polymers.

Abstract:Hyperbranched poly(amido amine) (h‐PAMAM) was synthesized from different feed ratios of diethylene triamine and methyl acrylate by the simple one‐pot and commercial synthesis method. Reaction procedures and products were intensively studied by FTIR, inherent viscosity and fluorescence techniques. The ill‐structured h‐PAMAM shared similar chemical and physical properties with well defined poly(amido amine) (PAMAM) dendrimers in generation 2 or 3. Its strong fluorescence properties were influenced by pH values, solvents, concentrations, terminal groups and other factors.

Abstract:Amphiphilic hyperbranched poly(amino ester)s with hydrophilic multi-ethoxylated triacrylate backbone and hydrophobic long alkyl side chain were firstly synthesized via one pot Michael addition polymerization. The poly(amino ester) could dissolve in cold water and self-assemble into loose micelle. Under 50-1000 ms bubble, the dynamic surface tension (DST) of the poly(amino ester) aqueous solution (0.5 wt%) still maintained in the range of 32-28 mN/m. The aqueous solutions of poly(amino ester)s with different molecular weights showed the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in the range of 8-50 degrees C, which could also be tuned by its pH. Capped with hydrophobic groups on the terminal units and partially neutralized with acid, the poly(amino ester)s still kept their stable dynamic surfactant behaviors, indicating promising application.

Abstract:Efficient synthesis of poly(enamine)s has been a great challenge because of their poor stability, poor solubility, and low molecular weights. In this work, a spontaneous amino-yne click polymerization for the efficient preparation of poly(enamine)s was established, which could proceed with 100% atom efficiency under very mild conditions without any external catalyst. Through systematic optimization of the reaction conditions, several soluble and thermally stable poly(β-aminoacrylate)s with high molecular weights (Mw up to 64400) and well-defined structures were obtained in excellent yields (up to 99%). Moreover, the polymerization can perform in a regio- and stereospecific fashion. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra analysis revealed that solely anti-Markovnikov additive products with 100% E-isomer were obtained. The reaction mechanism was well demonstrated with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. In addition, by introducing the tetraphenylethene moiety, the resulting polymers exhibit unique aggregation-induced emission characteristics and could be applied in explosives detection and bioimaging. This polyhydroamination is a new type of click polymerization and opens up enormous opportunities for preparing functional polymeric materials.

Abstract:The so-termed hyperbranched polymers differ from classical polymers by their high degree of branching, high density of terminal functionality, and three-dimensional molecular structure. The divergent synthesis of a series of polydisperse hyperbranched poly(amine-ester)s based upon 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane (as a core molecule) and N, N-diethylol-3-amine methylpropionate (as an AB(2) monomer) synthesized via Michael addition of methyl acrylate and diethanolamine is described, proceeding in a stepwise growth manner starting from an "initiator core" building branched arms, i.e., pseudo-one-step manner, or a one-step procedure in the melt using P-TSA as catalyst. These materials have different numbers of hydroxyl groups at the chain extremities on each molecule. The molecular composition of hyperbranched poly(amine-ester) was characterized by GPC, NMR and element analysis. The hyperbranched poly(amine-ester)s prepared using the pseudo-one-step procedure have narrower molecular weight distributions than the products obtained by using one-spot procedure as detected by GPC. The rheological behavior of the hyperbranched poly(amine-ester)s was investigated using a spinning viscometer. The viscosity is reduced sharply as the temperature increases. The thermal property has been also estimated. The hyperbranched poly(amine-ester)s, synthesized in this study, may be modified to meet particular application requirements for coating, lamination, and adhesive systems.

Abstract:The synthesis of acrylated hyaluronic acid (HA-A) normally requires 2 to 3 steps of modification, needs laborious purification and also increases the risks of HA degradation. Here, we report that the conjugation of acrylate groups to hyaluronic acid can be successfully achieved via a new facile one-pot approach. Two types of new HA-A hydrogels (via chemical or UV crosslinking) were developed and applied for 3D cell encapsulation.

Abstract:A new kind of water-soluble asymmetric hyperbranched poly(amide-ester)s was synthesized by direct polycondensation of benzene-1,2,4-tricarbonylic acid-1,2-anhydride (BTAA) and diethanolamine (DEA) via pseudo-divergent or one-step approach.The terminal groups of the hyperbranched polymer can be controlled by the feed molar ratio of BTAA to DEA.The resulting hyperbanched poly(amide-ester) was characterized by FTIR spectra, 1H-NMR spectra,and TGA.No gelation was observed when the feed molar ratio of BTAA to DEA was higher than 2.04 in one step approach,while gelation did occur when the ratio was lower than 2.In pseudo-divergent approach,it was not necessary to separate the obtained oligomers or macromolecules in each step,and hyperbranched polymers with high molecular weight were prepared.Compared with the divergent approach utilized in the synthesis of dendrimers,the pseudo-divergent approach is much simpler and more convenient,which might be useful in the large-scale fabrication of highly branched polymers.
Synthesis and Characterization of Water‐soluble Hyperbranched Poly(ester Amine)s from Diacrylates and Diamines

Abstract:Various water-soluble hyperbranched poly(ester amine)s were synthesized by the direct polyaddition of diamines to diacrylates in the absence of a catalyst. Each diamine contained a secondary amino group and a primary amino group such as 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine, N-methyl-1,3-propanediamine, or N-ethylethylenediamine. When the ratio of diacrylate to diamine was 1/1, no gelation was observed throughout the polymerization. When the ratio of diacrylate to diamine was 3/2, no crosslinking occurred in the diluted solution, whereas an insoluble network formed in the concentrated solution. Fourier transform infrared and mass spectrometry were used to investigate the reaction procedure. The secondary amino group of diamine reacted faster with the vinyl group of diacrylate; this resulted in the formation of the intermediate with an acrylate group and two active hydrogen atoms attached to a nitrogen atom. Further self-polyaddition of the intermediate, a kind of AB(2)type monomer, gave the hyperbranched poly(ester amine). (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:In this Communication, novel water-soluble hyperbranched polysiloxanes (WHPSs) simultaneously containing hydroxyl and primary amine groups are developed. The polymers are constructed via melt polycondensation, that is, transesterification reaction between ethoxyl groups of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane and hydroxyl groups of dihydric alcohols, using a one-step process under catalyst-free conditions. Surprisingly, the resultant WHPSs can emit bright blue fluorescence in the 100% solid state under the irradiation of UV light, and their photoluminescence intensities in aqueous solutions continuously go up along with increasing concentrations. Interestingly, their hydrolyzates display more intense luminescence compared to the unhydrolyzed. The efficient and easily controllable preparation strategy provides a remarkable and versatile platform for the fabrication of neoteric fluorescent materials for various potential applications.
Preparation of Water-Soluble Hyperbranched Poly(sulfone-Amine)s by Polyaddition of N-ethylethylenediamine to Divinyl Sulfone

Abstract:The new approach for synthesis of hyperbranched polymers from commercially available A2 and BB′2 type monomers has been further developed. Water-soluble hyperbranched poly(sulfone-amine)s with multiple amino end groups were prepared by direct polyaddition of divinyl sulfone (DV, A2) to N-ethylethylenediamine (NDA, BB′2). Effects of reaction conditions such as the feed ratio and solvents on the polymerization have been investigated. When the feed ratio of DV to NDA was equal to 1, no gelation occurred during the polymerization in water or organic solvents. Similarly, when the feed ratio of DV to AP was equal to 3/2, no insoluble or cross-linked material was observed in chloroform or other organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylforamide, N,N-dimethylacetamide and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. Interestingly, when water was used as solvent, the reaction mixture got turbid within 15–20min and gelation occurred within 12–15h. The turbid mixture formed during initial stage becomes a transparent solution in aqueous acid, which was coined as ‘pseudo-gelation’. The solubility of the resulting polymer in water is as high as 1.68g/ml. The degree of branching (DB) of all the resulting hyperbranched polymers is higher than 50% and the highest one is 70.9%. The reaction mechanism is presented and demonstrated with FTIR, HPLC and MS. During polymerization, secondary amino groups of NDA react rapidly with vinyl groups of DV within 12s dominantly generating dimers which can be regarded as a new AB′2 type monomer. Further polymerization of the new monomers leads to hyperbranched poly(sulfone-amine)s.
Synthesis of Fluorescent Dendrimers with Aggregation-Induced Emission Features Through a One-Pot Multi-Component Reaction and Their Utilization for Biological Imaging.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers have attracted wide research attention owing to their unique topological structure, physicochemical properties and great potential for applications such asadditives, drug delivery, catalysts and nanotechnology. Among these, the polyamidoamine(PAMAM) dendrimers are some of the most important dendrimers. However, the synthesis and biomedical applications of fluorescent PAMAM dendrimers have received only limited attention. In this work, we present a rather effective and convenient approach for synthesis of fluorescent PAMAM dendrimers with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties through a one-pot catalyst-free Mannich reaction under rather mild experimental conditions (e.g., low reaction temperature, air atmosphere in the presence of water). The obtained AIE-active amphiphiles (PhE-PAD) could self-assemble into fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs). The obtained AIE-active FONs (PhE-PAD FONs) were fully characterized, and their successful construction was confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Fluorescence and UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy results demonstrated that the final PhE-PAD FONs showed strong yellow fluorescence, desirable photostability and good water dispersity. The cell viability evaluation and confocal laser scanning microscope imaging results suggested that PhE-PAD FONs possessed low cytotoxicity and excellent biocompatibility. Taken together, these results demonstrate that we have developed a facile and efficient strategy for the fabrication of AIE-active FONs, which possess many desirable features for biomedical applications.
Preparation of Fluorescent Hyperbranched Polymer Materials by End-Capping Approach

Abstract:Two kinds of novel fluorescent hyperbranched polymers were synthesized by the end-capping approach. The fluorescent hyperbranched polyether (FPEOTM) was obtained by end capping the hyperbranched poly(hydroxyl ether) (PEOTM) with guest molecules N,N-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (DMABA). In addition, in the presence of triethylamine, the hyperbranched polysulfone-amine with terminal double bonds (HPSA) was synthesized by polyaddition of a new AB 2 type monomer (SAP, sulfone amine piperazine) at 40°C for 60 h in chloroform solution. Then the fluorescent hyperbranched polysulfone-amine (FHPSA) was prepared by addition of guest molecules N, N-dimethylaminoanilines (DMAA) with the terminal double bonds of HPSA. The two resulting polymers fluoresce yellow-green color in both solid and solution states. The maximum emission wavelength is (460±10) nm and (470±10) nm, respectively. A novel “complex quenching effect” for hyperbranched polymer was observed. The fluorescence can be quenched by transition metal cations such as Ag + , cu 2+ and Fe 3+ , while alkali and alkaline earth metal cations almost have no influence on the fluorescence intensity.

Abstract:This paper reports the production of glycopolymers via a simple and flexible method. A novel glycopolymer with a hyperbranched poly(amido amine) core and a sugar shell (HPAA-GLc) was synthesized by using thiol-ene click reaction via facile one-pot method. Hyperbranched poly(amido amine) with vinyl terminals was first synthesized by Michael addition polymerization of N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) with 1-(2-aminoethyl) piperazine (AEPZ). Subsequently, thiol-ene click reaction between vinyl units of hyperbranched poly(amido amine) and thio-glucose was performed in situ. Based on the NMR result, all the vinyl groups reacted with thiol-glucose in 120 min. Strong photoluminescence emission was observed from the aqueous solution of HPAA-GLc.
One-Pot Synthesis and Characterization of Hyperbranched Poly(Ester-Amide)S from Commercially Available Dicarboxylic Acids and Multihydroxyl Secondary Amines

Abstract:A convenient and cost-effective strategy for synthesis of hyperbranched poly(ester-amide)s from commercially available dicarboxylic acids (A(2)) and multihydroxyl secondary amine (CB2) has been developed. By optimizing the conditions of model reactions, the AB(2)-type intermediates were formed dominantly during the initial reaction stage. Without any purification, the AB(2) intermediate was subjected to thermal polycondensation in the absence of any catalyst to prepare the aliphatic and semiaromatic hyperbranched poly(ester-amide)s bearing multi-hydroxyl end-groups. The FTIR and H-1 NMR spectra indicated that the polymerization proceeded in the proposed way. The DBs of the resulting polymers were confirmed by a combination of inverse-gated decoupling C-13 NMR, and DEPT-135 NMR techniques. The DBs of the hyperbranched poly(ester-amide)s were in the range of 0.44-0.73, depending on the structure of the monomers used. The hyperbranched polymers exhibited moderate molecular weights with relatively broad distributions determined by SEC. All the polymers displayed low inherent viscosity (0.11-0.25 dL/g) due to the branched nature. Structural and end-group effects on the thermal properties of the hyperbranched polymers were investigated using DSC. The thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the resulting polymers exhibit reasonable thermal stability. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Synthesis of Novel Poly(ester Amine) Dendrimers by Michael Addition and Acrylate Esterification

Abstract:Dendrimers are a new kind of polymers. They have gained widespread attentions due to their remarkable properties in recent years. In the present work, a facile and efficient synthetic approach to prepare poly(ester amine) dendrimers is presented. Three different generations of poly(ester amine) dendrimers are synthesized starting from using pentaerythritol tetraacrylate as a core, followed by Michael addition and acrylate esterification reactions. This synthetic protocol is highly efficient, high yielding, and environmentally benign. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that these novel poly(ester amine) dendrimers are synthesized by using Michael addition reaction as the key step. The chemical structures of these poly(ester amine) dendrimers were measured with Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, NMR, elemental analysis, gas permeation chromatography, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF). In addition, the hydroxyl value and solubilities of the poly(ester amine) dendrimers were also examined. These synthesized poly(ester amine) dendrimers, which have well-defined structures with very narrow polydispersities, can be used in many fields such as chemical engineering, medicine, and nanoengineering.

Abstract:The synthesis of hyperbranched polyphosphoramidate (HPPAE) has been successfully achieved via a facial A2 + CB2 approach. First, an AB2 type intermediate is generated by the reaction between the phosphorus chloride group of ethyldichlorophosphate and the secondary amine group of diethanolamine. Second, the above intermediate can further self-condense to produce the hyperbranched polymer. The molecular weight and the structural characterization of HPPAE were checked by gel permeation chromatography and Fourier transform infrared and NMR (13C and 31P) spectroscopy. The degradation study of HPPAE indicated that phosphate and phosphoramide bonds between the branch points are responsible for its complete hydrolysis in an aqueous phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) after 6 days. In addition, HPPAE presents a strong fluorescence peak at 450 nm, exhibiting the potential to track drug transport and distribution in real time. (c) 2012 Society of Chemical Industry
