Abstract:AIM To study the expression significance of protein translation initiation factor C2 and its correlationship with expression of HBxAg in liver cirrhosis (LC) and hepatocellular carcinoma tissues (HCC). METHODS ABC immunohistochemical method was used to detect the expression of C2 protein and HBxAg in 27 samples LC, 60 samples of HCC and 42 samples of pericancerous tissue. Western blot method was used to detect the expression of C2 protein in HCC tissue and pericancerous tissue. RESULTS In 27 samples of LC, the positive rate of C2 protein was 77.8% and the positive rate of HBxAg was 74.1%. In 60 samples of HCC and 42 samples of pericancerous tissue, the positive rate of C2 protein was 27.3% and 83.3%, respectively. Ten samples and 7 samples were positive for C2 protein in 49 samples and 11 samples of HCC in which HBxAg was positive and negative, respectively. Statistical analysis suggested that the positive rate of C2 protein was significantly higher in pericancerous tissue and LC than that in HCC ( P 0.01). The positive rate of C2 protein was significantly lower in HBxAg(+) tissue than that in HBxAg(-) tissue ( P 0.05). Result of Western blot method was consistent with that of immunohistochemical method. CONCLUSION Low expression of C2 protein and the suppression of C2 by HBxAg may play an important role in the development of HCC.
