Abstract:An approach of design semiotics based icon design was proposed for exploring application of icon recognition in design practice.The icon was divided into four dimensions including semantic dimension,syntactic dimension,context dimension and pragmatics dimension,in which the innovative cognition and integration of icon design process and user study were discussed,a closed icon design theory was developed.After the analysis of design semiotics based icon design process and icon algebra theory,a design semiotics based icon design expression model was presented;the importance of semantic and syntactic dimensions was put forward.With.NET technology,a design semiotics based icon design computer system IDAS1.0 was set up on Windows 7 platform,including rapid icon design component,design semiotics evaluation component and knowledge base component.Based on the IDAS1.0,icon design can be accomplished rapidly,the knowledge base can be built,and the expert design semiotics evaluation can be achieved.Thus the design semiotics based icon design theory was tested.

Abstract:Why are the product design of the Apple Inc. are so successful in the dog-eat-dog market? One of the most important reasons is that the mental imageries of product user experience design of Apple Inc. are close to the user's expectant material mental imageries.In this study, we want to gain the main mental imageries of information product materials user experience design of the target users(18-28 years old university students or the recent graduates in the east of China) in the near future of the next 1-2 years. We used Culture Scan, Contextual Inquiry, Semantic Differential Method, and the Coordinate of Mental Imagery to study. We discovered that the main mental imageries of information product materials user experience design of the target users in the near future of the next 1-2 years are high-technological and fashionable. We built a bridge from the the material mental imagery of the user to the material mental imagery of the designer. The actual demand of the consumers could be more easily understood by the company.

Abstract:Product semantics is a tool in product design to generate newer, better and more meaningful forms. Consumer preference and perception of products strongly influence a product's acceptability. Both are expressed by words that may be studied using product semantics. As product semantics spreads rapidly in product design, it faces more interrogative challenges from the lack of empirical evidence to substantiate the claims of some product semanticists. Based on the study of product semantics design methods, this paper presents several principles which should be followed for expressing semantics in product design. Then, it explains the meanings of these principles by some examples. These principles should be helpful in product design. © 2009 IEEE.

Abstract:The code of product morphologic semantics was studied,and the process of people's comprehension and operation to the product was analyzed from people's thinking habit and cognition behavior.By analyzing the human factors,the product morphologic was coded accurately,so that product morphologic semantics meets human sensory understanding of the meaning of the shape and character of the psychological needs.So as to make product easily to understand and use,and having the aesthetic and psychological comfort,good sense when the consumers operating,to let consumers have a high degree of awareness and sense of identity for the product.

Abstract:Design is a preconceived plan to achieve a certain effect by intentionally changing an object. Through design, humans inject intentionality into natural objects, transforming them into artifacts and improving these artifacts into better objects that better serve human needs.Nature does not design; there is no design in the struggle for survival. Rather than saying that nature is suited for survival, it is more accurate to say that humans are striving to adapt to the natural world. Humans exist in a world that has been “designed by humans, ” with social and cultural designs that enable “artificial humans” to live in an artificial world.To survive in the world, humans must find ways to “design” nature. This is an extension of human subjectivity, which constantly seeks meaning in the world, including optimizing the environment to produce meaningful characteristics for the benefit of humanity.The practical activities of animals are determined by innate behavioral patterns passed down through genetics. In contrast, human design plans, as well as the tools or products produced from this design, reflect the social and cultural style of the community. The “scale” of design varies greatly and is entirely dependent on the intentions of the designer.Once nature is transformed according to the design plan, it takes on the meaning that humans have given it. Symbols are the perceptible means of interpreting meaning, which is most evident in design activities. Since the intention behind design is to change the meaning of an object, this design meaning will inevitably be expressed in a perceptible way. Without symbol activity, design would not be possible.Design may not always achieve its intended purpose, and there is always the possibility of miscalculation. In searching for the principles of design, we must begin with the special nature of design codes, since design itself is also “designed”. Before modern times, “humanization” evolved from the divine as the general principle of design, shaping the meaningful world that humans need. Today, it has been replaced by the universal realm of science. Overemphasizing the power of science to shape the world through scientific universalism may actually impoverish the human spiritual world.Artistry is the “anti-effect” part of design, with “artistic design” as the design effect that emphasizes artistry rather than utility. An item designed in this way not only provides utility to the user but also conveys value and appreciation that transcends the mundane. This “triple nature” is based on a fundamental paradox of symbolic aesthetics: art relies on purposelessness, but most designed objects must strive for utility.The overall plan for design is called “meta-design, ” or “design for design.” Each nation often insists on its own meta-design plan, which ultimately forms a comprehensive meta-design system that combines technology and aesthetics. All meta-designs ultimately seek a “grand unifying spirit, ” and attempt to intuitively demonstrate the ultimate reason for all things.Design semiotics is not just a technical problem, nor is it simply based on the changes in the shape of physical objects. It is the evolution of the “way” of meta-design, and is a profound imprint of historical progress.

Abstract:A new theory and method of creative product evolutionary design based on semantics feature is presented in this paper. The new theory and method is based on the study of evolving principle of design conception and process, which focuses on the innovation and reuse properties, and integrates key technologies for motion evolutionary design, assembly evolutionary design, structure evolutionary design and reuse evolutionary design. Furthermore, the new method was applied successfully on the modeling for some projects, and results showed the utility, flexibility and robust of the new technology.

Abstract:With the development of technology, the improvement of living standards, personalized designs that emphasize diversity and self-fulfillment are becoming more and more popular. As a result, designers must focus more on user needs. Traditionally, most of designers only focus on satisfying users’ functional needs and often ignore users’ emotional and psychological needs. This paper presents a design method that combines interaction design with axiomatic design. The proposed method first employs interaction design to acquire user needs with respect to three aspects: “people”, “products” and “environment” and then adopts axiomatic design to complete the conceptual design. The methodology is demonstrated and validated with a case study of children bicycle. The results show that the proposed method significantly enhances users’ experience of the product and meets more comprehensive user needs, especially in terms of users’ psychological and spiritual needs.

Abstract:Cultural and creative products are the business choice and important trend of the current economic transformation, tourism and cultural derivatives is one of the types of cultural and creative products, this paper analyzes the characteristics of the existing cultural and tourism products as well as the future direction of tourism peripheral product design, combines the design semiotics with the analysis of product symbols in the context of consumption, and arrives at the way of selecting, interpreting and conveying symbols in the design of cultural and tourism products. It discusses how to convey cultural connotation, stimulate tourists’ emotional resonance, and enhance the attractiveness and competitiveness of cultural tourism products through symbol design, and proposes relevant design principles and strategies. This study aims to improve the quality of cultural transformation into “cultural tourism products” and provide theoretical support for the development of tourism cultural and creative products.

Abstract:The data production for the CDF experiment is conducted on a large Linux PC farm designed to meet the needs of data collection at a maximum rate of 40 MByte/sec. We present two data production models that exploits advances in computing and communication technology. The first production farm is a centralized system that has achieved a stable data processing rate of approximately 2 TByte per day. The recently upgraded farm is migrated to the SAM (Sequential Access to data via Metadata) data handling system. The software and hardware of the CDF production farms has been successful in providing large computing and data throughput capacity to the experiment.
