Abstract:Globalization has inevitably disrupted the sanctity of the local culture of countries in the world under the impact of dominant foreign culture. Ignoring the preservation of domestic culture will lead to cultural homogenization and loss of identity. Attributable to this, protecting local culture has become one of the most crucial agendas in many countries’ cultural development planning, including China. One of the most potent approaches to this is through design. The emergence of Neo-Chinese interior design in China has created a window to forward new interpretations and meanings while preserving the Chinese culture through contemporary interior design. The study attempts to formulate a new design model by interpreting and conveying meanings of Chinese traditional culture through the material form using semiotics. Meanings from Chinese traditional paintings will be decoded to help formulate the structures for the new proposed model of the Neo-Chinese interior design. They will serve as the research variable and the basis of the study. The outcome of this research can be helpful to Chinese interior designers while also acting as a reference for other countries to maintain and develop the nationality of their design.

Abstract:In recent years, the problems of environmental pollution and resource shortage have increased year by year, and the topic of sustainable development has aroused widespread concern. The simple sustainable ideas in Chinese traditional culture have made important contributions to the harmonious coexistence between people and nature in ancient China. By analyzing China’s simple sustainable ideas, the author discovered the holistic view in the idea of ‘Nature and Humanity’, the frugal view of the ‘Using wisely’ idea, the concept of benevolence in the thought of ‘love of all people and all things’, the ecological view in the thought of ‘things are not endless’ and the view of life in the thought of ‘Taoism follows nature’, these five perspectives provide systematic sustainable ideas for modern furniture. This article will analyze these five ideas, combined with the development of contemporary society and the development of modern sustainable ideas, looking back on the current status of modern furniture design, so as to explore the specific application of modern furniture design under the simple sustainable ideas and provide new ideas for the sustainable design of modern furniture.

Abstract:The traditional elements in Chinese classical furniture are constantly changing with the development of history and culture. It is not only quite artistic, but also has unique aesthetic value. Since the reform and opening up, Western culture has flocked into our country with the opening of the country, which has led to the blind pursuit of the aesthetic psychology of Europe and the United States, which is also more obvious in the furniture design. This kind of foreign-oriented mentality has caused my country's furniture design to stagnate or even regress in the display process of traditional cultural elements. The traditional elements contained in the furniture of people's homes turned out to be less, and some were even completely decorated in European and American styles. This tendency shows that the recognition of traditional elements in furniture design in our country is constantly decreasing, and we must pay more attention to it. In contemporary society, wireless communication and artificial intelligence decision-making have become an important reference for people to solve complex problems and have exerted more and more influence in all fields of social life. In the contemporary era when the global economy and culture are increasingly integrated, the daily life of people in various countries is inevitably affected. Furniture is a relatively important daily necessity in residents' homes. It has the closest contact with people's lives. It enhances the expression of traditional elements in furniture in China and wins the recognition of many people. It has a value that cannot be ignored for our work to promote traditional culture. In contemporary furniture style design, how to better integrate traditional cultural elements, so as to achieve the dual purpose of protecting cultural heritage and improving artistic quality and enriching the expression of traditional culture in contemporary furniture, has become a topic of concern to many people. The purpose of this research is to explore how to better integrate traditional elements into contemporary furniture under the background of contemporary technologies such as wireless communication and artificial intelligence decision-making. The study obtained the public's attitude towards the integration of traditional elements into furniture through questionnaires and judged how to innovate traditional elements through wireless communication and artificial intelligence decision-making, which would be more in line with the aesthetic concept of contemporary people.

Chinese furniture design accompanies Chinese history and is another interpretation of Chinese culture. How to deal with the reference and innovation of Chinese contemporary furniture design to Chinese traditional furniture is a problem that must be studied and solved in Chinese contemporary furniture design, which has important theoretical significance and practical value for the development of Chinese design. An innovative application of diagonal ridge elements of classical Suzhou-style buildings to furniture design based on Kansei engineering and shape grammar

Abstract:This paper proposes a furniture design method combining Kansei engineering (KE) and shape grammar (SG), to explore how the diagonal ridge elements of classical Suzhou-style buildings can be applied to furniture design and to explain how the styling elements match the cultural imagery in furniture products. Suzhou-style armchairs and cultural elements of diagonal ridges were collected, the most suitable armchairs were selected for incorporating such elements, and their shapes were deconstructed along with characteristic interpretations. A factor bank of diagonal ridge elements was constructed, first through Kansei word selection and evaluation experiments, and then through factor analysis which determined the main cultural elements of the design. The shape grammar theory was applied to design and innovate the selected armchair samples, achieving three design solutions. The solutions were then comprehensively evaluated, and the optimal one was used for the final physical product. The results of the study showed that users had clear subjective feelings about the design incorporating diagonal ridge elements, with their Kansei on three aspects: aesthetic style, decorative complexity, and structural balance. The approach used in this work blends furniture products with cultural imagery on diagonal ridges, providing a feasible methodological reference and an empirical case for cultural sustainability through furniture design.

Abstract:Shanghai style furniture (SSF) was the classic case of Chinese furniture culture, we have researched on the teaching content of SSF design for the furniture design course in Chinese art design speciality, and carried out the teaching practice of SSF design for some students. According to this teaching practice, the students' design attitude towards SSF was summarized, which will provide a basis for inheriting SSF design and developing SSF design teaching. In our teaching practice, 132 students had learned the design experiences of SSF, carried on the design practice of SSF, and summarized their SSF design. In the process of students' redesign of SSF, generally speaking, the SSF style was characterized by the combination of China and the European and modern simplicity. Modern elements were added to the SSF design, and fine works were refined in the traditional Chinese modeling, so as to make SSF more in line with the trend of modern design and better carry forward the concept of design service life. After studying this course, these students had basically mastered the design method of SSF. Excavating the practical value of SSF culture and designing new SSF, which are not to copy traditional art style, but the recreation and redesign basing on modern cultures.

Abstract:It is a paper focused on an analysis based on the Western idea of Semeiology. And it is specially based on two concepts of 'significant' and 'signifie'. With a comparison of some essential concepts of classical Western and traditional Chinese architecture ideas, a conclusion could be reach that the classical Western architecture have had paid much more attentions on the category of 'form' based on the ideas of 'beauty' or 'delight'. As a contrast, traditional Chinese architecture would have paid some more attentions on the category of 'meaning' base on the idea of 'rule' (Du) which could differentiate the social ranks. The analysis shows us some essential differences between Western and Chinese traditional architecture.

Abstract:Homogeneity of products is a serious problem in China’s solid wood furniture market, especially reflected in the fact that the furniture form cannot meet the individualized demand of consumers. To explore the differences of consumers’ affective response for different styles of solid wood furniture, this study used Kansei engineering to perform perceptual semantic experiments on Ming-style, Qing-style, and modern Chinese-style furniture. The perceptual images of three styles of solid wood chairs were compared by single factor variance. Additionally, it deconstructed the morphological elements of solid wood seats using morphological analysis and established a mapping model between morphological elements and affective response by quantification theory type-I and multivariable linear regression model. The results show that there are differences in affective response between Ming-style, Qing-style, and modern Chinese style solid wood furniture. Qing-style solid wood furniture tends to be “ornate” and “personalized”. Modern Chinese-style solid wood furniture tends to be “modern” and “streamlined”, Ming-style solid wood furniture is in between the two styles. This study can provide furniture designers with a way to compare the differences in affective responses of different products, and the resulting relationship between affective responses and morphological elements can assist in designing products.

Abstract:Empirical Studies of the Arts, Ahead of Print. Ming-style furniture patterns hold significant cultural importance within traditional Chinese heritage. Despite being frequently integrated into modern Chinese product design, a comprehensive scientific investigation into the psychological framework governing people's appreciation of these patterns has been lacking. Therefore, this article employs structural equation modeling analysis to delve into the aesthetic structure of Ming-style furniture patterns. The results found that: (1) Emotion, as the dependent variable, is influenced by perceptual and cognitive factors, with familiarity being the most crucial influencing indicator. (2) The model proposed in this article exhibited no variations across age and gender groups, but did demonstrate differences based on individual expertise. These research findings not only bridge the void in empirical studies on the aesthetics of Chinese traditional patterns but also establish a theoretical foundation for enhancing the decorative impact of traditional patterns in product design.

Abstract:Based on the styling elements of Chinese imperial costume,the characteristics and cultural connotation of blue and white porcelain in the dynasty of Yuan, Ming and Qing and auspicious patterns among the people as well as the traditional paper-cutting art. The paper analyzes the traditional colors and graphic elements by the decomposed and reconstructed of modern graphic designing method, expounds and demonstrates the innovative application of traditional colors and graphic elements in modern home textile design, and then further realizes the Chinese artistic style of home textile design.

Abstract:Summary: In the article, the authors analyse the primary problems which arose during the design product development in the field of industrial furniture production during the period from the beginning of the 20th century, including during the opening of China, to the present. The vector of the furniture industry development is studied through the industrial design evolution. The reasons for the emergence of a new style in furniture design in China, analysed in detail in connection with changes in economic and cultural realities, are studied. The question of the influence of the Song dynasty aesthetics on the formation and development of a "new language" in furniture design is touched upon. This dynasty’s cultural heritage formed the basis of the new style in design not only in terms of appearance, shape and structure but also in a deeper understanding of the principles of constructing form and meaning inherent in traditional Chinese culture. As an important part of the ancient culture of China, the Song Dynasty aesthetics is an invaluable spiritual national heritage of the entire nation, which is fully reflected in the revival of mass interest in national culture in the field of technical aesthetics and industrial production. Compared to Russia, the modern model of design development is completely different. Design in Russia largely follows the development vector laid down within the framework of the Soviet Union's “technical aesthetics” and still largely meets the needs of the industry (of course, with the necessary adjustment for time). In Russian history, the formation of the profession of a designer coincided with two revolutions: a political revolution that led to a change in social attitudes, and an artistic revolution that began before the first and continued after it, while Chinese modern design did not seem to have experienced such significant perturbations. However, it seems that the concept of the New style of design in China and the concept of Russian modern design, based on the experience of the Soviet period, rely on traditions, actively incorporate innovations and strive to find a unique path that best suits the development vector of each of the countries.
