Abstract:According to dynamic numerical analysis of Jin-Li-Wen expressway K81 high-slope by means of large deformation of contact FEM, it is stated the main reason that reviviscence of ancient slide was caused by decrease of normal stress on slide-plane and descending of skid resistance resulting from cutting-slope excavation. The result revealed that contact FEM analysis of large deformation is an effective method by which sliding mechanism of landslide was researched; meanwhile mechanical action of potential slip surface was analyzed better by this way.
Two-dimensional Back-analysis and Prediction of Settlement of Soft Clay Ground of Highway's Embankment

Abstract:In this paper, the two-dimensional formulas of viscous-elastic Biot's consolidation FEM based on Merchant's model are presented to calculate settlement of saturated soft clay ground in highway's embankment project. Parameters in formulas may reasonably be determined by direct optimal method (such as Simplex) so that it minimizes the sum of squares of differences between calculated and measured quantities (objective function). The future settlement can be more accurately predicted by using the back-analytical parameters.

Abstract:Based on the FEM,the performance characteristics of pavement with different layers are analyzed under static load.The plane stress?plane strain and axisymmetric models are adopted during the course of the analysis for pavements with single?double and four layers.It is obtained that the axisymmetric models can be used for quantitative analysis and the other models for qualitative analysis.The effect on the highway located on the soft clay ground is discussed under the static overload using the axisymmetric model when the thickness of the composite foundation is changing.It is given how the plastic zone develops in the composite foundation.Some conclusions may be taken as references to the design of pavement engineering on the soft clay ground.

Abstract:For a low embankment road, the reasonable prediction of vehicular load-induced plastic deformation plays an important role in the road design. According to the mechanism of vehicular load-induced plastic strain, the plastic strain comprises two parts:plastic volumetric strain and plastic shear strain. In the calculation of plastic volumetric strain, the dissipation equation with a source term, which couples Terzaghi’s consolidation theory with the experimentally-achieved cumulative pore pressure model under undrained condition is adopted. While in the calculation of plastic shear strain, the hardening factor of plastic volumetric strain is taken into consideration. The validity of the model is verified by the dynamic triaxial test results of saturated clay under undrained and drained condition. For practical problems, the vehicular load-induced stress is calculated by the numerical method firstly;then the plastic strain can be calculated by the proposed model. Finally, the plastic deformation is obtained by the layer summation method. The calculation example of the point NO.1 on Saga Airport access road is analyzed to illustrate the validitity of the model in a pratical boundary value problem.

Abstract:Settlement after construction is one primary problem of high-filled embankment. In this paper a method of prediction for settlement after construction was developed. A general Kelvin model was adopted to depict constitutive relationship of filling material. The bottleneck of the problem is how to obtain reliable material parameters for numerical calculations. Based on field monitoring data,back analysis approach using a 3D FEM method,an orthogonal numerical experiment,and a regression and optimization analysis was conducted to calculate the visco-elastic parameters. With these calibrated parameters,the settlement after construction of a 37 m high-filled highway embankment was predicted. The results show higher accuracy and good agreement with monitoring data. The method can be used to predict settlement after construction of high-filled embankment.

Abstract:To investigate the influence of open-cut undercrossing of national highway 235 on the main bridge piers of Liuxiang Road west extension interchange,this work employed a combination of field monitoring and finite element simulation.Based on the supporting project,the three-dimensional computational model for both stratum and structure established using Plaxis 3D numerical analysis software,incorporated the HSS constitutive model to simulate the soil behavior.The entire process of open-cut tunnel construction in the undercrossing section was simulated.This analysis delved into the influence of the open-cut tunnel section of national highway 235 on the deformation and stress of piers on both sides of the main bridge of Liuxiang Road west extension interchange.Throughout the excavation of the foundation pit in the tunnel section,the finite calculation results for the horizontal displacement of the bracing structure closely aligned with the measured results,validating the calculation model.This affirmed the efficacy of the HSS constitutive model in simulating the open-cut construction of the undercrossing section.Finite element calculations revealed that,over the entire construction process of the open-cut construction and tunnel construction of the national highway 235 tunnel section,the viaduct piers on both sides experienced a certain degree of impact.The maximum horizontal and vertical displacements of the main bridge pier conformed to the deformation control requirements,ensuring the structural integrity and safety.

Abstract:Composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles under strip foundation is analyzed by means of finite element method on the basis of field test. The influential factors including cushion, cap, rigid pile and flexible pile on deformation characteristics of composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles are studied systematically. The results indicate composite foundation settlement reduction along with cushion thickness reduction and module increment, cap thickness increment is advantageous to differential settlement reduction, rigid pile is main component to control settlement; flexible pile increment can reduce differential settlement. These conclusions are helpful for optimum design.

Abstract:Asphalt pavement with semi-rigid base is the major structure adopted in the new built highway and municipal roads in China. So as to reduce the unfavorable impact on the rehabilitation of municipal roads which require quick resumption of traffic, better base materials should be adopted. If a pavement base fails, the flexible base, i.e. large stone asphalt mixture (LSAM), should be employed in the pavement rehabilitation practice. Focusing on the practice pavement sections using LSAM as base in Hangzhou municipal roads, the effect factors of subgrade modulus, base modulus and base thickness on surface deflection and bending strain in base bottom is analyzed. That work is done through finite element method of software BISAR3.0. The results provide a practice reference for municipal roads rehabilitation needing to open traffic early.

Abstract:To widen the expressway built on soft soil is an important subject in expressway construction engineering. Taking the widening project of Hang-Yong Expressway as background, the influence of additional stress in the foundation generated by the new embankment is analyzed. Based on Mohr-Coulomb model, regularity of settlement and deformation of old and new embankments are analyzed and compared with the measured data. Tension occurs in pavement due to the non-uniform settlement of the new and old embankments. Time for pavement can be determined by post construction differential settlement.

Abstract:Some problems such as lack of stability and uneven settlement existing in road widening engineering on soft ground.Based on the widening and rebuilding project of Hubin road,according to the characteristics of unilateral widening and high fill,the stability and deformation is systematically studied.First,the rock mechanical parameters of soil are determined through laboratory test on samples of undisturbed soil.Then,the effect of reinforcement measure is appraised by numerical simulation with design information.The numerical analysis shows that the reinforcement of soft ground on the slope toe through cement mixing pile can increase the stability of road foundation and reduce settlement of reinforcement area.Besides,in order to reinforce the combination of old and new embankments,the measures of excavating old embankment and geogrid layout are necessary.The field monitoring in construction period indicates that the deformations on the new fill part and toe of slope are obvious.Under the condition of construction quality assurance and proper scheduling control,the deformation of road widening is under control,and the road is in good working order after completion.

Abstract:The geological condition in the Jining-Fengzhen section of the Freeway 208 is described in the paper.And the purpose of layout of observational apparatus and significance of observation is presented through the long-term settlement observation in the high-fill embankment.Based on the hyperbolic method,the Matlab program is applied to analyze the long——term stability of all the high-fill observed embankment sections in the project.In light of China Freeway Code,the total and residual settlement is within the project requirement.
Method of Stress-Deformation Compatibility Analysis Considering Variable Mass for Roadbed Settlement

Abstract:The traditional layerwise summation method has such drawbacks as the assumption of small strain and the ignorance of variable mass due to drainage. In order to overcome the drawbacks, with the concept of different configurations, a new method of stress-deformation compatibility analysis considering variable mass due to drainage is developed, which re-explains the measurements of strain and modulus of compression, and which is associated with fundamental ideas of layerwise summation method and finite strain theory. Through the study of the subject of roadbed settlement under drained and undrained condition, the differences among compatibility solutions and two kinds of traditional ones for the ultimate deformation are presented as well as the corresponding regularity of relative errors, and the application of the new method to consolidation settlement of roadbed is also discussed. The results show that solutions of stress-deformation compatibility method and two traditional ones for the ultimate settlement increase approximately in hyperbolic curve with the increase of compression thickness, and increase nearly linearly as load level enhances;the generally-used traditional solution for the ultimate settlement regardless of strain history correction tends to yield a lower value;the new method can improve the accuracy of prediction for the consolidation settlement of roadbed, etc. The new presented method can help for evaluating both the ultimate settlement and the consolidation settlement of roadbed more precisely.

Abstract:An elasto-viscoplastic model is used to analyze stress-strain characteristics of both road base and soft clay ground in this paper. Dynamic finite element equations are constructed. Finite element analysis is conducted for interaction on pavements and soft clay ground subjected to aircraft loads. Deformation characteristics of pavements and soft clay ground interaction under cyclic loads are obtained.
Analysis of the Deep-Seated Concrete Slab for Settlement Control at Bridge Approach Embankment

Abstract:The deep-seated reinforced concrete slab, which is different from the traditional reinforced concrete slab for settlement control at bridge approach embankment, can avoid the complaints about the reinforced concrete slab cracking with the long-term impact action of vehicle. A simplified two-dimensional plane strain finite element model for bridge-approach, in which soil parameters are selected from the geological prospecting data, is proposed. The comparison between field experiment and theoretical results shows the characteristics of subsidence of bridge-approach overlaying the deep-seated concrete slab. Parametric analysis is also performed to investigate the influence factors of disposal effect of the deep-seated reinforced concrete slab. The results indicate that the deep-seated concrete slab has more advantages on the settlement control and alleviating vehicle bouncing at the bridge approach.

Abstract:The settlement caused by embankment widening on the soft soil condition of road widening project is analyzed by using numerical simulation;and the strength reduction method is used to study the global stability.The numerical analysis indicates that after road widening the stability of embankment is not enough;and the differential settlement of embankment is obvious;thus reinforcement measures are used to increase its safety.Through studying two improvement measures,i.e.geogrid and cement mixing piles,some useful conclusion is obtained.The cement mixing piles can reduce the differential settlement and improve the stability of road embankment significantly.The case study can provide reference and illustration for similar projects.

Abstract:In order to obtain a deeper understanding of the deformation characteristics of the retaining structure and the adjacent buildings of deep foundation pit of metro station caused by deep excavation in soft soil, systematic monitoring and result analysis of deep foundation pit engineering of a metro station in deep soft clay area were carried out. It was found that grooving of diaphragm wall will cause lateral displacement of adjacent soil. The maximum lateral displacement of soil accounts for about 20% of the lateral displacement of soil during excavation of foundation pit. The average values of maximum lateral displacement of the retaining wall on the south side (namely the side of the pile foundation buildings) and the north side (namely the side of the shallow foundation buildings) during soil excavation were 0.091% H-e and 0.120% H-e, respectively. When the value of y/H-e (y is the distance between vertical continuous wall direction and diaphragm wall, and H-e is the excavation depth) is less than 0.92, the magnitude of the settlement and differential settlement induced by excavation was relatively larger. The settlement of the ground surface was close to that of the shallow foundation settlement, while the settlement of the pile foundation was obviously less than that of the shallow foundation building among which the rock-socketed pile foundation building had the smallest deformation value. Both the shallow foundation buildings and pile foundation buildings were affected by spatial effect which was more obvious when the value of xffie (x, the distance from the corner in the longitudinal direction) was less than 1.5. When the value of x/H-e was greater than 2.0, the soil deformation near the adjacent buildings and retaining structures approached to a plane strain state.

Abstract:With ANSYS finite element analysis software, finite element method was used to analyze the flexible Ferris wheel in this paper. By obtaining stress and deformation of the structure strength and stiffness was calculated and assessed. Improvements were made on this basis to meet the design requirements. With stability and dynamic analysis structure has good global stability and the frequency spectrum of structure is dense and even distribution. The analysis procedure and results indicated in this paper can be used as a reference for the analysis and design of similar projects.

Abstract:Part of soil under the hard shoulder should be improved to reach the design standards of subbase in Hangzhou-Ningbo freeway widening project.Injection method is firstly put forward to improve the soil,and experimental study on injection process and effect is introduced in this paper.Researches about location of injecting hole,injection material and method selecting,injection controlling parameters and construction techniques are studied.In the end,two groups of testing are done to validate the reinforced effect.It is shown that as the deflection value decreases,modules of resilience and shear wave speed increase remarkably after injection.The resilient modulus of injected soil reaches the design standards.The advantage of this method is that it causes little influence on traffic and 28 percents of total engineering cost can be saved.

Abstract:Based on the widening project of Ri-Lan highway in China, the finite element model is established by PLAXIS. By applying differential settlement at the bottom of the pavement, the mechanical response of the pavement structure is analysed. Finally, the differential settlement control standard indicated by crack strength is proposed. The results show that, under the effect of differential settlement, within about 4 cm of old pavement surface and upper base bear tensile stress, the base first reaches the failure strength. Under 4 cm of the old pavement surface, the subbase first reaches the failure strength. The differential settlement control standard of the pavement structure is determined by the splitting strength of the material, and we, respectively, control the differential settlement of less than 23.4 mm, where the corresponding cross-slope rate is 0.33%, and below 75.2 mm, where the corresponding cross-slope rate is 0.54%. It could support practical engineering applications.

Analytical Method for the Deformation-Based Design of Retaining Walls in Asymmetric Excavation

Abstract:Conventional methods for designing retaining structures are not applicable to asymmetric excavation or deformation-based designs. This study proposes a quadruple-line displacement-dependent earth pressure coefficient model. Based on the proposed model, an analytical solution was developed to facilitate the deformation-based design of the asymmetric length of retaining walls propped at the crest. Furthermore, the effects of the soil internal friction angle, strut stiffness, excavation asymmetry level, and deformation control value on the embedment ratio (Re) of retaining walls were investigated. The results showed that Re determined by the classical equivalent-beam method is unsafe due to its basis on the ultimate-state earth pressure theory. The Re value of the shallower side exhibited greater sensitivity to asymmetric excavation than that of the deeper side. The retaining structure’s required Re decreased with an increase in the excavation asymmetry level. The required Re on either side of the retaining structure decreased as the deformation control values increased. The controlled deformation had a more obvious effect on the Re value of the retaining structure on the deeper side. The proposed method can be used for the deformation-based design of asymmetric wall lengths of retaining structures propped at the crest, considering the different excavation depths on both sides.
