Abstract:The main principle, developing history and present status of multi-parameter and multi-functional fiber grating sensing techniques are introduced. And the technology of multi-parameters measurement at the same time with one fiber-grating sensor is explained. The discrimination techniques for cross-sensitivity of temperature and strain have been discussed in detail. The multi-parameter sensing head configurations involving fiber-grating devices have been overviewed and sorted. Novel multi-functional fiber grating sensing systems have been proposed and analyzed.

Abstract:The methods of sensor and demodulation with matched fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) used as direct light intensity elements in vibration sensor are introduced. The expressions of reflection and transmission spectra of FBG are deduced, which provides a qualitative explanation of sensor mechanism. Then mathematical models are established in order to make simulation. The method can perform single point demodulation with matched FBG and can turn the sensor signals into intensity variation of the output of FBG. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theory, which proves the feasibility of this method.

Abstract:On the basis of analyzing and researching the principle of demodulation technique for FBG,a scheme of demodulation technique for FBG,which was based on cantilever tuning and the demodulation technique on a pair of matched FBG was designed.The relation between the wavelength shifts of sensing FBG and the wavelength shifts of reference FBG were studied,and each part of the system was designed.Stepping motor transformed the electricity pulse signal into angle-displacement or line-displacement's open-loop control part,in the non-overload situation,the electrical machinery rotational speed and the stopping position was only decided by the pulse signal's frequency and the pulse number,and was not influenced by the variation of load.This system has the characteristic of simply structure,high precision and low cost.
A Fiber Bragg Grating Sensing-Based Micro-Vibration Sensor and Its Application

Abstract:This paper proposes a fiber Bragg grating sensing-based micro-vibration sensor. The optical fiber has been directly treated as an elastomer to design the micro-vibration sensor, which possesses two FBGs. The mass is fixed on the middle of the fiber, and the vertical vibration of the mass has been converted into the axial tension/compression of the fiber. The principle of the sensor has been introduced, and the experiment conclusions show that the sensor sensitivity is 2362 pm/g within the range of 200-1200 mm/s², which is consistent with theoretical analysis sensitivity of 2532.6 pm/g, and it shows an excellent linearity of 1.376%, while the resonant frequency of the sensor is 34 Hz, and the flat frequency range resides in the 0-22 Hz range. When used to measure micro-vibrations, its measured frequency relative error is less than 1.69% compared with the values acquired with a MEMS accelerometer, and the amplitude values of its measured vibration signal are consistent with the MEMS accelerometer under different excitation conditions too, so it can effectively realize the micro-vibration measurements.

Abstract:The cross sensitivity problem is always existed in application of optic fiber grating sensor and various measures must be adopted for remedying and distinguishing. The cross sensitivity problem is overcome by a modified dual-grating matrix operation method, i.e., sticking optic fiber grating on both upper and lower surfaces of cantilever beam and measuring the wavelength displacement of these gratings, respectively. The method only needs a set of light source and detection system. The unit has the advantages of simple structure, lower cost and a practical application prospect.

Abstract:A sensor solution for weak vibration based on Fiber Bragg Grating Fabry-Perot(F-P) cavity is designed and experimentally demonstrated,in which a laser with single-frequency is used as the light source.The F-P cavity is affixed to the cantilever structure of even distribution of strain along the axis and the pair of fiber Bragg gratings as the cavity reflectors is placed freely.The vibration spreading to fiber grating F-P cavity through the cantilever beam vibration,causes changes in cavity length,thus changing the reflective light intensity of fiber grating F-P cavity.Theoretical analysis indicates that,the amplitudes and frequencies of vibration can be measured by demodulating the peaks and frequencies of the signal.The experimental results of measuring artificial vibration simulated with PZT agree with the theory well.This sensor has high measuring accuracy and can be used for detecting weak vibration.

Abstract:Abstract The fiber Bragg grating vibration sensor has received a lot of attention due to its unique performance. However, the natural frequency of the sensor limits its development and application. This paper presents an acceleration sensor with an isosceles triangular cantilever and mass block structure, which has high natural frequency and high sensitivity. The optical fiber sensing system consists of two fiber gratings. One section of the fiber grating is pasted on the cantilever and serves as an accelerometer; the other is used as a reference grating. The first-order natural frequency of the accelerometer is 8356 Hz, and its sensitivity is 0.46 pm g −1 . A vibration test confirms the reliability of the sensor, and the resonant frequency of the sensor is 8193 Hz. The principle of light intensity demodulation is adopted in the sensor system and its sensitivity is 45.82 mV g −1 with a linearity of 0.997. The sensor has the advantages of high frequency and sensitivity, and thus can be applied to the rail transit bearing systems

Abstract:In practice, since the measurement environments are usually complex, the electromagnetic interference problem has been an important issue for sensor applications, and the fiber sensor can overcome it effectively. this paper proposes a new type of vibration sensor based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The vibration sensor with double equal strength cantilever beams structure can further improve the measurement stability. The physical model of FBG vibration sensor was established, and the structural parameters of the double equa-strength cantilever beams were designed and optimized by finite element analysis. Both simulation and experimental tests are included in this paper to illustrate the low-frequency vibration performance of the designed vibration sensor. Among, the sensitivity of the sensor was 0.024 0 pm/(m·s−2), the natural frequency was 185 Hz, and the linearity was obtained, which further verify the stability and reliability of the sensor vibration frequency measurement.

Abstract:A new type technology of dynamic PZT modulation with fiber grating is proposed. It can change measure of wvelength shift with optical spectrum analyzes to count of optical power pulse detecting by oscilloscope. The technology is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The PZT is modulated by periodicity voltage and the fiber grating fixing on the it is also modulated by PZT. The measured resolutions in experiment are good agreement with ones in theory.

Abstract:Being used as sensors of vibration is one the most important uses of fiber Bragg grating (FBG).Firstly,the normal principle of the sensors with FBG is introduced.Then we summarize five kinds of demodulation of vibration with FBG that are commonly used.The principle and scheme of the experiment are given respectively,and their character and function (especially the measurement accuracy) are analyzed.This paper provides foundation for the design of the demodulation of vibration with FBG.

Abstract:An exploratory study on the temperature and strain sensor based on weak long period grating(LPG) and fiber ring is presented.This fiber ring-down(FRD) device consists of two matched fiber Bragg gratings,a section of single mode fiber,a weak long period grating,a pulsed laser source and a photodiode.The weak long period grating inserted in fiber ring cavity is used as sensing element which will cause additional loss is cavity.By measuring the fiber ring-down time in time domain,the temperature(0～100 ℃) and strain(0～1 000 μe) sensing characteristics on weak long period grating are achieved.The demodulation wavelnegth range is 10 nm.

Abstract:This paper presents a triaxial vibration sensor that can be used for vibration acceleration detection. The main body of the elastic structure of the sensor is a variable section beam. The fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) are applied to the surface of the crossed variable section beam. The theoretical equation for the sensitivity of this sensor is given by the theoretical analysis of material mechanics. The simulation of modal analysis was carried out by means of the finite element method. The resonant frequencies of the proposed fiber Bragg grating triaxial sensor in the Z, X, and Y directions are 363.01 Hz, 466.34 Hz, and 466.82 Hz, respectively. Finally, the sensor was calibrated and tested in each direction of vibration, and the results showed that the sensitivity of Z, X, and Y directions were 6.66 pm/g, 4.61 pm/g, and 4.61 pm/g respectively, which proved that the FBG sensor has good sensing response for vibration in three directions.

Abstract:A new-type vibration sensor based on a fiber Bragg grating combined with a special structure-packaged design is proposed for monitoring the mechanical vibration signals. Three different sensing structures, including the film squeeze type, new film squeeze type, and elastic tape squeeze type are proposed for measuring the vibration signals with the frequency range from tens to thousands of Hz. In the comparison to experimental results, the new film squeeze structure has a nice sensing performance in the range from 100 to 1000 Hz with a sensitivity of 0.302 mV/g. For the elastic tape squeeze structure, the elastic tape is designed to encapsulate the optical fiber with a good frequency response from 1100 to 3100 Hz. In addition, by using the new film squeeze structure to measure the steady-state and non-steady-state vibration signals, the spectral components of sensing signals are analyzed by using the wavelet transformation for confirming the testing signals. These vibration fiber sensors can be applied in the measurement of high-end manufacture-facility vibration or earthquake vibrations etc.

Abstract:The invention discloses a composite fiber grating vibration/stress sensor. The composite fiber grating vibration/stress sensor comprises a substrate thin board and a fiber, wherein the fiber is attached to an axis of an upper surface of the substrate thin board, a first fiber grating is correspondingly pasted at the middle portion of a two-end fixing and supporting beam, the axial direction and acentral axis of the two-end fixing and supporting beam are superposed, a second fiber grating is correspondingly pasted at the center position of a shielding device, and the axial direction and a central axis of the shielding device are superposed. The composite fiber grating vibration/stress sensor is advantaged in that interference caused by environment temperature change can be avoided, and vibration and stress signals are further measured.

Abstract:An optic-fiber vibration sensor based on the reflected 81° tilted fiber grating (81° TFG) integrated with a symmetrical flexible hinge is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this paper. The vibration sensor is composed of a symmetrical flexible hinge and a reflected 81° TFG, the ends of which are simply fixed on the upper surface of the mass. The theoretical model of the proposed vibration sensor is analyzed, by which the important parameters related to the resonant frequency of the sensor are simulated and discussed; then, the vibration sensing experiments are conducted. Experiment results show that TE/TM mode of the 81° TFG can provide the maximal acceleration sensitivity of 338.28 and 299.94 mV/g at 400 Hz in the flat area of the amplitude-frequency response (50-400 Hz), which is increased by 9.95 and 11.5 times as compared with the optical fiber cantilever beam structure, respectively. Further, the signal-to-noise ratio in the flat area (50-400 Hz) is about ∼66.275dB under the acceleration of 2 g, which is increased by ∼20dB. Furthermore, it can be used for detecting mechanical vibration of medium-high frequency ranging from 50 to 3500 Hz. The proposed 81° TFG vibration sensor has the characteristics of small volume, simple package, high acceleration sensitivity, and wide vibration signal response range, which will ensure it has broad application prospects in the field of mechanical vibration.

Abstract:An equal strength cantilever beam vibration sensor based on an excessively tilted fiber grating (Ex-TFG) with light intensity demodulation is proposed. The basic principles and sensing characteristics of vibration sensing of an equal strength cantilever beam and Ex-TFG, the combination of which is applied into vibration sensing, are analyzed. An Ex-TFG is attached to the middle axis of an equal strength cantilever beam. As the vibration of a piezoelectric ceramic causes the equal strength cantilever beam to deform, the same and uniform deformation also occurs on the Ex-TFG. Experimental results show that when the thickness of the equal strength cantilever beam is 0.3 mm and the Ex-TFG is at transverse electric (TE) polarization state, the sensing performance is the best, with the maximum acceleration sensitivity reaching 81.065 mv·m-1·s2, and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) main frequency components of the sensing signal accounting for more than 80%. In addition, this sensor is stable in sensing performance, easy in demodulation, simple in structure, high in sensitivity, and easy in manufacture, applicable for the sensing and on-line monitoring of low-frequency vibration signals.

Abstract:A 2-D vector vibration sensor is designed and fabricated by using an optical fiber double-clamped beam with four-core fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and a mass block that is glued in the middle of the fiber. Vectorial acceleration perpendicular to the fiber can be measured using two mutually orthogonal FBG-pairs in the four-core fiber to obtain the 2-D vibrating information. The experimental results show that the sensor possesses a 2-D vectorial acceleration sensitivity of 345 pm/g in the flat response region of 5–30 Hz, and it is temperature insensitive, compact, and cascadable. Both resonance frequency and sensitivity can be improved by optimizing the length and weight of the free fiber. The proposed sensor has potential applications for dynamic monitoring in oil exploration, seismic exploration, and heart rate monitoring.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-fiber strain sensor based on dual side V-grooved long-period fiber grating (DSV-LPFG). This fiber structure is achieved by polishing a series of asymmetrical V-shaped grooves on a single mode fiber (SMF), which is fabricated by a high-frequency CO2 laser. The asymmetrically periodic structure enhances the sensitivity of strain and shortens the total length of fiber grating. Experimental results show that the strain sensitivity of the structure reaches 44.6 pm/mu epsilon in the dynamic range of 0-1000 mu epsilon. Meanwhile, the strain sensitivity of the sensor with the different periodic numbers and the offset distance are investigated. Temperature sensitivity of 53 pm/degrees C is obtained, which exhibits a small temperature cross-sensitivity of 1.18 mu epsilon/degrees C. Furthermore, the proposed strain sensor exhibits the advantages of simple structure, convenient fabrication and low cost.

Abstract:A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing based triaxial vibration sensor has been presented in this paper. The optical fiber is directly employed as elastomer, and the triaxial vibration of a measured body can be obtained by two pairs of FBGs. A model of a triaxial vibration sensor as well as decoupling principles of triaxial vibration and experimental analyses are proposed. Experimental results show that: sensitivities of 86.9 pm/g, 971.8 pm/g and 154.7 pm/g for each orthogonal sensitive direction with linearity are separately 3.64%, 1.50% and 3.01%. The flat frequency ranges reside in 20-200 Hz, 3-20 Hz and 4-50 Hz, respectively; in addition, the resonant frequencies are separately 700 Hz, 40 Hz and 110 Hz in the x/y/z direction. When the sensor is excited in a single direction vibration, the outputs of sensor in the other two directions are consistent with the outputs in the non-working state. Therefore, it is effectively demonstrated that it can be used for three-dimensional vibration measurement.
