The investigation and analysis on the sources of nursing stress in the geriatric ward

Abstract:Objective To investigate the sources of nursing stress in the geriatric ward.Method 156 nurses who work more than one year in the geriatric ward were selected by convenient sampling from a general hospital in Beijing.Nursing Stress Scale (NSS) was used to test the level and the sources of the stress.Results The scores of 5 subscales were showed from high to low degressively:①time assignment and workload;②the issues of nursing specialty and the problems in working;③the problems for patient care;④the issues for supervision and internal relationship and communication;⑤problems in working environment,instruments and equipments.Paired t-test showed that there was significant difference among the five subscales scores(P<0.01). Conclusions Enough attention should be paid to the sources of stress in nursing personnel of geriatric wards,and effective stress management strategies should be implemented in order to keep nurses physically and psychologically healthy and improve nursing quality.
