Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations can produce many exotic optical phenomena and are the basis of many novel applications of modern optics, including optical communications systems, optical sensing, and materials research. In recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allows unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. With the spectacular experimental development of nonlinear optics, computational methods and techniques for nonlinear optics have obtained prominent progress. This chapter summarizes the computational methods of free-carrier nonlinearities via the hydrodynamic description in a nonperturbative regime and bound-state electron nonlinearities via the Maxwell-Bloch description in a simplified two-level quantum system. The full-wave consideration of nonlinear dynamics of plasmonics and bound-state electrons reveals key contributions to the emerging nonlinear optical applications and allows the design of high effective nonlinearities in a desired spectral range.

Abstract:It is a radical but pressing problem to measure the group refractive index of dispersive material both accurately and rapidly in optical engineering field. In this paper, a white-light spectral interferometric system employing a fiber-optic spectrometer is developed for solving this problem. The system takes advantage of the characteristic of fiber-optic spectrometer which can get all the interferometric information by a single shot image without any mechanical scanning. Compared with the traditional windowed Fourier transform, a wavelet transform algorithm is used to directly extract the group delay rather than the phase from the interferogram. Therefore, the new method can provide a simple and fast solution, while still maintaining high accuracy. Based on this white-light Michelson interferometric system, fused silica and BK7 glass samples are measured respectively and the results agree well with the theoretical values over a broad spectral range. At the end of this paper, different mirror positions are used to verify the repeatability of our method.

Abstract:We discuss theoretical analysis of optical fiber taper with its refractive index gradually changing alone its propagation axis caused by photosensitivity. The numeric results for two different taper shapes in step-index fiber show that the couplings of fundamental mode to the reflected mode and to high-order modes is relatively small provided the change is gradual. The fundamental mode has the capability of excellent transmission that can adjust itself adiabatically to the refractive index change. The experiment demonstrates its effectiveness for optical interconnection with different mode-fields

Abstract:Many experimental investigations on the temperature dependence of the refractive index of optical fibers have been reported previously, however a satisfying theoretical explanation for it is still absent. In this paper, a theoretical model about the temperature dependence of the refractive index of optical fibers is presented and it is in agreement with the previous experimental results. This work is a significant reference for the research and development of temperature sensors based on optical fiber delay lines.

Abstract:The refractive index for crystals or small disordered materials has been derived by using a semiclassical method. The influence of the electron-phonon interaction on the thermal effects of the refractive index has been studied. The temperature coefficient of the refractive index is a constant at high temperature and is proportional to ${T}^{3}$ at low temperature. The zero-dispersion wavelength increases with a temperature rise. The temperature coefficients of NaCl, ZnSe, and several other materials have been calculated. Theoretical results are compared with experimental data, and they are consistent with each other.

Abstract:The optical nonlinearity of microfibers and nanofibers is of great importance due to a variety of applications like supercontinuum generation, harmonic generation and optical switching. We carefully examine the Lorentz optical force in silica OMNFs and show that optomechanical effect contributes significantly to the value of the nonlinear index.

Abstract:Spatial and temporal changes of temperature in a novel polymer are investigated by using the Z-scan technique under ns laser pulse excitation. According to the open aperture Z-scan experimental results, the nonlinear absorption coefficient of the polymer is determined. By solving the diffusion equation of heat conduction induced by optical absorption, the spatial and temporal changes in temperature are obtained. This change in temperature drives the photo-acoustic and electromagnetic wave propagating in the polymer and induces the change in refractive index, which serves as a negative lens, and the closed aperture Z-scan shows a peak and valley profile. Based on the numerical calculation, we achieve a good fit to the closed-aperture Z-scan curve with an optimized nonlinear refractive index. This consistency attests the existence of temperature change in the solution, and the Z-scan technique is suitable to investigate this change in temperature.

Abstract:There are prominent nonlinear characteristics that we hope for the semiconductor nano-clusters doped fiber. Refractive index of fiber core can be effectively changed by adulteration. This technology can provide a new method for developing photons components. Because the semiconductor nano-cluster has quantum characteristics, Based on first-order perturbation theory and classical theory of fiber, we deduced refractive index expressions of fiber core, which was semiconductor nano-cluster doped fiber. Finally, third-order nonlinear coefficient equation was gained. Using this equation, we calculated SMF-28 fiber nonlinear coefficient. The equation shows that new third-order coefficient was greater.

Abstract:Self-focusing is observed in nonlinear materials owing to the interaction between laser and matter when laser beam propagates. Some of numerical simulation strategies such as the beam propagation method (BPM) based on nonlinear Schrodinger equation and ray tracing method based on Fermat's principle have applied to simulate the self-focusing process. In this paper we present an iteration nonlinear ray tracing method in that the nonlinear material is also cut into massive slices just like the existing approaches, but instead of paraxial approximation and split-step Fourier transform, a large quantity of sampled real rays are traced step by step through the system with changing refractive index and laser intensity by iteration. In this process a smooth treatment is employed to generate a laser density distribution at each slice to decrease the error caused by the under-sampling. The characteristics of this method is that the nonlinear refractive indices of the points on current slice are calculated by iteration so as to solve the problem of unknown parameters in the material caused by the causal relationship between laser intensity and nonlinear refractive index. Compared with the beam propagation method, this algorithm is more suitable for engineering application with lower time complexity, and has the calculation capacity for numerical simulation of self-focusing process in the systems including both of linear and nonlinear optical media. If the sampled rays are traced with their complex amplitudes and light paths or phases, it will be possible to simulate the superposition effects of different beam. At the end of the paper, the advantages and disadvantages of this algorithm are discussed.

Abstract:A reflective fiber temperature sensor system based on the ZnO thin film is proposed. The transmittance spectra and temperature dependent optical property of the sensing head with ZnO thin film is investigated theoretically and experimentally, and the temperature resolution of similar to 1 degrees C is obtained in the temperature region of 300-773 K. The temperature sensing system is only related to the wavelength shift of transmittance spectra, and has a high stability without depending on the incident light intensity. This research results also indicate a fiber optical sensor with a broad temperature measurement range (10-1800 K) can be gained as a promising temperature sensing device, and can be applied into some extremely environments, such as aircraft, nuclear power station and power transmission system, and so on. Abstract:The study of the linear and nonlinear optical properties of ZnGeP2 based on density functional theory has been carried out. In order to get a more physical picture in the infrared region, terms which are considered as the phonon effect were added to the calculated refractive dispersion curves. The phonon-corrected calculation curves show excellent agreement with experimental refractive indexes, which gives a better comprehension of the linear optical proprieties in the transparent region. The static nonlinear optical susceptibility was investigated using approaches based on the "sum over states" and the 2n + 1 theorem methods. Both of the results of these two methods reasonably coincided with the experimental results.
Theoretical and experimental investigation on temperature coefficient of optical fiber delay at cryogenic ranges

Abstract:The temperature coefficient of optical fiber delay is theoretically and experimentally investigated under the condition of cryogenic temperature. The effects of temperature variation on the refractive index of the fiber core and the strain of the fiber coating are studied in the theoretical analysis. Based on the analysis, an equation that linearly relates the optical fiber delay and the temperature, which induces the changes of the fiber-core refractive index and physical length, is derived. It is found that the temperature coefficient of optical fiber delay is constant at the cryogenic temperature condition. In the experiment, the temperature coefficient of optical fiber delay is measured to be a constant of 50.9ps•km−‍1•K−1 at the temperature range from 110K to 220K. Good agreement is found between the theoretical analysis and the experimental verification.

Abstract:The nonlinear decoupling approximation is used to calculate numerically the effective linear dielectric function and third order nonlinear effect of metal particle composite media as function of random volume fraction, especially the high volume fraction, which show the nonlinear optimum volume ratio. The optical nonlinearity of composite media as functions of the frequency of the incident light under different volume fraction have been studied. It is found that near the surface plasmon resonance, optical nonlinearity increases when volume fraction inereases to certain value and then decrease due to the influence of the particle-particle interaction to the local field.

Abstract:Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials, characterized by their near-zero permittivity, ease of fabrication, enhanced nonlinearity, and compatibility for nano-fabrication, have positioned themselves as alluring solutions for large-scale integrated systems-on-chips. However, systems operating within confined spaces inherently generate heat, presenting significant challenges for the functionality of ENZ materials, including CMOS-compatible transparent conductive oxides. Although the temperature sensitivity of their optical properties is well recognized, a systematic analysis of this critical dependence has been lacking, so far. This experimental study aims to clarify the linear and nonlinear thermo-optic ENZ effects within indium tin oxide (ITO). The investigation encompasses a comprehensive analysis of the temperature-dependent optical properties of ITO samples, spanning ENZ frequencies within the telecommunication O-band, C-band, and 2-µm-band. Notably, our findings reveal that ITO exhibits an unprecedented enhancement of thermo-optic effects within the ENZ region, ranging from 660% to 955%, vastly surpassing the conventional thermo-optic effect. This enhancement is achieved over a wide bandwidth of 70 to 93 THz. In addition to linear phenomena, we delve into thermo-optic nonlinearity, found to exhibit an exceptionally substantial enhancement, ranging from 1113% to 2866%, comparable to the reported enhancement of its Kerr nonlinearity. The outcomes of our investigation provide essential parameters and practical insights that are relevant for both optical and thermal engineering design considerations. This is especially pertinent for applications involving packaged photonic integrated circuits. Additionally, our findings suggest the potential of ITO as a novel platform for slow light applications and photonic emulation.

Abstract:By physical and chemical dehydration technique to remove OH group from raw materials and via built-in casting method to make glass fiber preform, mid-infrared fluorotellurite glass fibers with low loss of 3.61dB/m at 1550nm were fabricated recently. With the addition of fluoride components, fluorotellurite glass fiber cane presents a ‘water-free’ state with a broadband transparency in the range of 0.38–4.2µm. By the continuous-wave self-phase modulation method, the nonlinear refractive index n2 and the effective nonlinear parameter γ of the made fluorotellurite glass fiber were estimated to be 1.4×10−18m2/W and 20.9/W/km at 1550nm, respectively. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The dependence of nonlinear optical response on temperature is investigated theoretically for a metal-dielectric composite with interfacial layers in a dilute limit. We show that the effect of interfacial layers on the nonlinear optical response of such composites is more prominent at low temperatures than at high temperatures, that the interfacial factor depends on the volume fraction of metallic particles and the frequency of the incident wave, and that an optimal interfacial layer is found for which the nonlinear optical response is able to be enhanced to a maximal. It is shown that weak nonlinearity can be greatly enhanced if the interfacial factor, frequency and volume fraction are chosen appropriately. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We study the thermal-induced variance of effective refractive indices (ERIs) and birefringence in several kinds of polarization maintaining fibers (PMF) and carry out numerical simulations by utilizing the finite element method (FEM). Responses under varying temperatures in these fibers are analyzed thoroughly. According to our computational results, hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCFs) exhibit much more stable temperature-dependent ERIs and birefringence among these PMFs.

Abstract:A theoretical study of optical properties of subwavelength‐diameter silica fibers is presented, with an emphasis on the interplay between dispersion and nonlinearity. The normalized dispersion and effective nonlinearity are used to analyze the diameter‐dependent relative strength at all wavelengths.
