Abstract:The responsibilities and functions in project safety risk management for designers and contractors are discussed. Generally the process of risk management is divided into three stages: the risk identification, evaluation, and decision making. The former two are mainly the designer's responsibility, for which a model of sub-system risk management approach is put forward. The model is exemplified and analyzed with real cases. The feasibility in risk identification and evaluation period is proved. The evaluation criteria of occurrence probability of unexpected events and severity of outcomes are rationally set up in evaluation method, which provide the scientific basis in risk evaluation of the construction safety.

Abstract:Nowadays, the share and the influence of Chinese enterprise in the international project contracting market are increasing year by year, while the mounting risk of international projects cannot be overlooked. Recently, the Chinese overseas enterprises have suffered the risk from:(1) the overall economy; (2) overseas business fields; (3) geographical distribution; (4) new contract amounts; and (5) accomplished business revenue. At the same time, the overseas projects of Chinese enterprise are coping with a series of international engineering problems, such as tender discrimination, harsh terms of the contract and the kidnapped workers. Therefore, this paper aims to seek ways for China's foreign-related enterprises to avoid risk and losses. Moreover, preventive measures and suggestions of risk management can be taken from this essay.

Abstract:The most of risks in engineering projects are transferred from the owner to the general contractor under the EPC mode. The widespread use of this mode made the general contractor face higher risks. In order to reinforce the contractor's capacity of risk prevention and control in the process of project implementation,this paper summarizes major risks which project phases faced in whole life cycle. On the basis of literatures review,the paper proposes specific prevention measures in the perspective of bid,design, procurement and construction. Then concludes project risk management method in the overall perspective and provides a reference for the general contractor about the aspect of risk control and prevention.

Abstract:Foreign exchange risk management is the focus of overseas construction enterprise management. The quality of its management will affect the profitability of enterprises to a large extent. It is also an important index for comprehensive evaluation of its internal management. The foreign exchange management strategies of China’s overseas construction enterprises mainly include two ways: operational hedging and financial hedging. According to the data of overseas construction enterprises in China from 2011 to 2018, the empirical application shows that enterprises that use only financial hedging have a negative relationship with corporate profits. The better foreign exchange risk management strategy of enterprises should be a comprehensive foreign exchange risk prevention strategy, which mainly relies on operational hedging supplemented by financial hedging.

Abstract:As an opened developing country, China is attracting more and more foreign investment, and many large construction projects have been carried out with international funding. Meanwhile many overseas construction consultants have been retained to advice clients on the various aspects of the management of projects. This management advice is often given in the unfamiliar context of the Chinese construction industry, Chinese legal and administrative systems, and Chinese culture. There is a real potential for divergence between what the overseas consultants consider to be normal practice and traditional management concepts in China. Accordingly, many risks exist for the unwary consultant in these fields. The paper explores the main risks for consultants working on construction projects, and provides some countermeasures under the FIDIC form of contract and the Chinese version of the Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC), based on the research and experience for FIDIC and ECC.

Abstract:With China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Chinese construction market will be increasingly open and finally become part of the international market. Because of different social and economic systems, as well as different historical and cultural backgrounds, contractors are likely to encounter different risks in different markets. Based on questionnaires and case studies, this paper adopts an importance evaluation index and makes an importance evaluation of various risks encountered by Chinese contractors when contracting for projects in Chinese markets. This paper also makes comparisons between and analyses of the research findings and related available investigation results. The Cox-Stuart trend increase test method is applied in the current research, the results indicating that the variance corresponding to the importance index value tends to increase as the risk event importance decreases. This tendency shows that those investigated tend towards unanimity in terms of higher importance risk events. This paper also examines the reliability of the questionnaires by means of Cronbach's Alpha Coefficient. The research shows that the main risk currently encountered by Chinese contractors in domestic markets includes owner's irregular behavior and government departments' interference in construction markets. China's accession to the WTO has provided greater opportunities for international contractors to enter the Chinese construction market. Therefore the research results described in this paper can provide valuable data enabling international contractors to gain a better understanding of the potential risks in the environment of the Chinese construction market.

Abstract:With the continuous introduction of documents by the State Council to implement general contraction for construction projects, more and more domestic projects use the general contracting model. One of the advantages of this approach is that it can reduce the risk of owners. However, unreasonable risk transfer will result in high risk cost and reduce project benefit, even lead to project failure. It can be seen that reasonable risk sharing is the core content of risk management in general contraction for construction projects. Based on the contract model, this article will initially share the risks of the general contraction for construction project as share the risk unilaterally and share the risk together. For sharing the risk together, this paper will aim at maximizing the risk sharing benefits of both sides of the general contraction for construction project, and build a risk sharing proportion model, in order to provide a basis for calculating the optimal risk sharing ratio of both parties.

Abstract:External risk management encompasses many areas such as finance, politics and national cultures. Although external risk management is a critical success factor for many construction firms which have ventured out of their home countries, factors like project risks are often neglected by construction firms. This study in particular adopts the proposition that the practice and knowledge of risk management in Chinese construction firms is low in their home market, and that holistic risk management is not a priority in their management strategies. This also appears to be the case when they venture into the international arena. The objective of this study is to examine how construction firms attempt to manage external risks during the period that they venture into other countries. To achieve this objective, a case study approach is adopted to understand the external risk management practices of a Chinese construction firm venturing into Singapore. The results of the case study support the proposition that the practice of holistic risk management in Chinese firms is indeed low, and that formal risk management is not in place. The empirical findings also suggest that the difficulties in managing external risks lie in the decision that the Chinese construction firm makes on exactly how management wishes to manage such risks. There are myriad solutions to handle each type of external risk but Chinese construction firms need to be cautious and selective in choosing a suitable response that is beneficial for the company.

Abstract:As a typical type of general contracting model, EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) refers to the full process general contracting carried out by the contractor on behalf of the owner, in accordance with the agreement, for the design, procurement, construction and other stages of the engineering project. Compared to other modes, the EPC general contracting mode also faces more risk, with risk factors in each link. This article conducts research on the risk of engineering projects under the EPC mode, mainly analyzing the characteristics of the EPC mode and the risk problems existing in the EPC general contracting mode. It proposes relevant countermeasures to strengthen the risk management of EPC general contracting projects from four aspects: contract, design, procurement, and construction, providing a certain reference for the risk management of EPC projects in construction enterprises.

Abstract:Risk identification is the chief step of risk management in enterprises' international operation, and also the premise and base of risk avoidance and countermeasure. This research takes Chinese enterprises' international operation as the research background. Based on theoretical deduction of the international risk classification and identification, through empirical research about measure of risk content, this research identifies all kinds of risks that enterprises have to face when they exploit international market. It gets an evaluation index system which contains evaluative targets, first sub-layer, second sub-layer and concrete index for international risk measure. Furthermore, it probes into the construction of international risk identification mechanism which contains risk analysis subsystem and risk assessment subsystem.

Abstract:During the past three decades, partial or global financial and political crisis around the world have significantly affected the international construction market. As the unprecedented revolutionary waves of demonstrations and protests took place in the Middle East and North Africa in early 2011, contractors in the international marketplace are experiencing more severe political risks than ever before. They have also in response endeavored to mitigate the high degree of political risk exposure in order to survive. Failure to fully understand the risk exposure can seriously affect their internationaliza tion goals. Relatively few studies of political risks, particularly in the context of international projects, have been carried out.The objective of this paper is to examine how construction firms attempt to manage the political risks when they ventured out of their home countries. This paper analyzes the political risks encountered by international contractors when undertaking projects overseas. By distilling theories and previous findings from international business in general, the political risk is defined and the risk factors are identified. A framework of alternative risk management strategies is outlined.This research will assist international contractors to manage the political risk factors when expanding overseas.
