Abstract:Microwave heating technology, as a new green metallurgical method, is the core technology used in metallurgical engineering. Based on a brief overview of the principle of microwave technology heating and its application in the metallurgical industry, this paper summarizes the latest research progress and development status of the current microwave heating technology in the hydrometallurgy leaching process and the trend of the application of microwave heating technology in metallurgy. A detailed classification and discussion on the leaching process of common metals were made. The purpose is to further improve the application level of the technology and provide technical support for the improvement of the market position of China’s metallurgical industry. Finally, the problems that need to be urgently solved in the hydrometallurgy of microwave-assisted leaching are further discussed and prospects and suggestions are also discussed.

Abstract:Microwave processes have been rapidly developed for the last two decades in many areas, but the application of microwave in metallurgical processes is just at the initial stage. This paper presents a review on the research and development results of microwave technology applied in mineral treatment, material preparing process and metal recovery operations such as heating, comminution, carbothermic reduction of oxide mineral, leaching and some of metallurgical waste treatments. Despite in this area a significant number of research studies have been carried out and many results obtained, which exhibits a lot of advantages in metallurgical processes. The mechanism of interaction of microwave with minerals and materials and understanding of some phenomena occurring in a microwave-assisted process are still not explained clearly, so that more investigation will be needed in the future. The conversion efficiency of microwave energy, high power microwave generator and designing efficient reactor are key problems to be overcome for improving industrial applications.
Microwave-enhanced Remediation of Cd, Pb and Zn Contaminated Soil Using EDDS as a Leaching Agent

Abstract:With the rapid industrialization and urbanization in the world, soil pollution is intensifying, especially heavy metal contamination. A new approach using microwave coupled to EDDS as a leaching agent for removal of Cd, Pb, and Zn from field soils was examined in the laboratory. Effects of time and power of microwave on removal efficiency and fractionation of heavy metals were investigated. The results showed that under microwave condition(900 W, 10 min), the removal efficiencies of Cd, Pb, and Zn were 29%, 89%, and 71%, respectively, increased by 8%, 26%, and 33%, respectively, compared with those without microwave treatment. In addition, the processing time was greatly reduced from 6 h to 10 min. Sequential extraction results showed that the exchangeable, carbonate bound and Fe-Mn oxide bound fractions of metal concentrations were obviously reduced after treatment, by 34%, 90%, and 83% for Cd, Pb, and Zn, respectively, whereas the residual fraction was increased, which reduces ecological risks of heavy metals. Microwave-assisted leaching can be a promising remediation method for heavy metal contaminated sites.

Abstract:Ultrasound and microwave were applied to enhance extraction of heavy metals in sewage sludge with oxalic acid and hydroxyethyl ethylenediamine triacetic acids (HEDTA), and the effects of radiation time, power and energy of ultrasound and microwave on the extraction of heavy metals from sewage sludge were investigated. Besides, species of heavy metals fractions in sewage sludge before and after extraction were analyzed by the application of Tessier's sequential extraction procedure. In general, the extracted fractions of Cu, Ni and Cr in sludge were improved with the increase of time, power and energy, the extracted fraction of Zn had not been obviously improved. After the ultrasonic-assisted and microwave chemical extraction, the contents of organic compounds and residue forms of Cu, Cr and Ni were decreased. However, the contents of exchangeable and carbonate compounds forms were slightly increased, the speciation of Zn in sludge was hardly changed.

Effect of Microwave Radiation on Immobilization of Heavy Metals in Sediment Sludge

Abstract:In order to evaluate the effect of microwave radiation on immobilization of heavy metals (CU2+, Ct(6+), Zn2+ and Pb2+) in sediment sludge, leaching tests were run under different test conditions to compare microwave radiation with conventional blast heating and drying process for their effectiveness in immobilizing heavy metals within sediment sludge. Experimental results indicate that microwave radiation can decrease the concentration of heavy metals in leachate by 63% similar to 70% more than conventional blast heating and drying process in an actinic shake leaching test. Under the same simulated natural water conditions, the concentration of heavy metals in the leachate using microwave radiation is well below the concentration of heavy metals in leachate using conventional blast heating and drying process. It is therefore concluded that microwave radiation is much more effective than conventional blast heating and drying process in immobilizing heavy metals in sediment sludge.

Abstract:Tessier five-step extraction method was used to analyze the heavy metal speciation distributed in urban sewage sludge, which was divided into exchangeable state, carbonate state, Fe-Mn oxidation state, organic state, and residual state. The traditional method was modified in the first four stages, and the operation time was reduced by using microwave heating in each step. The result of microwave extraction shows that no significant differences were found for Zn, Pb, Ba, and Ni in the first three states as compared with the traditional method, except that Ni is slightly lower in Fe-Mn oxidation state (recovery rate 81.24%), Pb is higher in carbonate state (recovery rate 192.19%), Ba is lower in exchangeable state (recovery rate (80.94)%), Zn is higher in exchangeable state. Cu and Mn are lower in all states. Unlike the first three states, the organic state is much different from the traditional method in extraction efficiency. By giving overall considerations to all elements distribution in sample and overall content of heavy metal, it is known that Ni, Ba, and Cu are less active, and Mn, Pb, and Zn are more active in ambient condition.

Abstract:Irradiated roast treatment and the ammonia leaching processing were conducted to deal with the low-grade oxide zinc ores. The ZnCO3 phase was hard to be attended, which was the reason for the low leaching rate of the complicated zinc ores. The mineral phase transformation of the ZnCO3 phase was generated after the ores irradiated in the microwave at the temperature of 673 K. The irradiated ores generated more small particles, it was the reason that the leaching rate of the complicated zinc ores was increased. When the leaching processing of the irradiated roasted ores was conducted under the conditions of the total ammonia concentration of 6 mol/L, the liquid to solid phase ratio of 11:1, the leaching temperature of 298 K, the leaching time of 150 min and the stirring speed of 400 rpm, 88.3 % of zinc could be achieved, which was the maximum leaching rate of the irradiated ores.

Abstract:Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) is a hazardous by-product of steel production. As global steel output increases, substantial amounts of EAFD are produced, which causes significant environmental issues. EAFD contains quantities of Fe and Zn, which could be reused as raw materials in the steelmaking process. However, zinc oxides can be reduced and vaporized during this process, forming zinc vapor that contaminates equipment surfaces and causes damage. Consequently, various pyrometallurgical methods have been proposed for zinc removal from EAFD. Due to the extensive usage of carbonaceous materials, these methods contribute to significant CO2, raising concerns about greenhouse gas emissions. Microwave heating offers an efficient, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly alternative to pyrometallurgical approaches. EAFD can generate heat under microwave irradiation without carbon addition, which means the CO2 emissions can be reduced by replacing the reductant in the microwave heating process. Furthermore, microwaves enhance zinc removal reactions to a certain extent, resulting in higher efficiency. Thus, employing microwave heating for EAFD processing has significant potential for future development. This paper reviews recent research on using microwave heating for zinc removal from EAFD, focusing on the heating behavior of EAFD in microwaves and the mechanisms of zinc removal. This review will be crucial for researchers working on processing EAFD using microwave heating and could help guide the development of more sustainable and efficient methods.

Abstract:Heating plays a vital role in various manufacturing processes of metallic products. Microwave heating has many advantages over conventional conductive heating methods while it is currently limited to heating dielectric materials and powdered metals. This paper reports a new microwave heating method using electromagnetic resonators, which was, for the first time, proved effective for heating solid metals. This is a quite promising discovery, because as known, solid metals are essentially reflective of microwaves, and thus metallic objects are often prohibited in microwave ovens. In this paper, our experiment results showed almost complete microwave absorption and excellent heating performance for a range of metal plates including both magnetic (e.g., iron, nickel, and invar) and non-magnetic (e.g., tin and zinc). A patterned microwave heating process was also presented by adjusting electromagnetic resonators and microwave radiations. On this basis, a new multi-zone microwave processing paradigm was developed and demonstrated for welding metal plates. The research work may not only provide potential solutions for efficient heating and processing of complex-shaped metal parts, but also enable a plethora of applications like localized heating and thermal display.

Abstract:Discovery of the capacity of microwave energy to heat materials was a major milestone in the history of technology and scientific research. This discovery led to the development of many devices and processes that have replaced conventional heating methods, thereby reducing reliance on fossil fuels and reducing atmospheric CO 2 emissions. Over the past two decades the use of microwave heating for processing of non-dielectric metals, metal powders alloys have increased markedly and includes sintering, melting, joining, cladding, drilling, and 3D printing. These developments have used a wide range of experimental procedures, and the use of microwave power has resulted in significant benefits over conventional heating methods. These benefits include a many-fold decreases in processing times and energy consumption, as well as improved microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of the processed material. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art of microwave processing of metals, metal powders and their alloys and focuses on important process parameters such as heating mechanisms, electromagnetic properties of metals, the factors affecting these parameters and applications to metal processing. Requirements for efficient metal processing using microwave power are presented including metal properties, microwave susceptors, insulators, ceramic containment structures and temperature measurement methods that all play roles in the development of microwave processing of metals and metal alloy materials. Current challenges and issues in equipment design parameters and various processing methods to facilitate commercial implementation of metal processing at larger scales are investigated.

Abstract:In this work, extraction of lead from Electrolytic Manganese Anode Mud (EMAM) by microwave coupled ultrasound was studied. The results showed that microwave roasting promoted the conversion of MnO2 to Mn2O3 and Mn3O4, which greatly facilitated the subsequent leaching process of lead and the introduction of ultrasound effectively enhanced the leaching process. The leaching rate for lead from EMAM was arrived to 86.98% under the optimum conditions with the ammonium acetate concentration of 2 mol/L at 343 K and the stirring speed of 300 rpm for 60 min. With the introduction of specific power ultrasound, the leaching of lead was increased by about 10%. The microwave roasting combined with ultrasonic enhanced leaching can effectively for the reuse and reduction of EMAM which provides ideas for further investigation of lead pollution control and resource utilization in EMAM.

Abstract:The microwave-assisted leaching was a new approach to intensify the copper recovery from chalcopyrite by hydrometallurgy. In this work, the effect of microwave-assisted heating on chalcopyrite leaching of kinetics, interfacial reaction temperature and surface energy were investigated. The activation energy of chalcopyrite leaching was affected indistinctively by the microwave-assisted heating (39.1kJ/mol) compared with the conventional heating (43.9kJ/mol). However, the boiling point of the leaching system increased through microwave-assisted heating. Because of the improved boiling point and the selective heating of microwave, the interfacial reaction temperature increased significantly, which gave rise to the increase of the leaching recovery of copper. Moreover, the surface energy of the chalcopyrite through microwave-assisted heating was also enhanced, which was beneficial to strengthen the leaching of chalcopyrite.

Abstract:Soil contamination with heavy metals (HMs) is still a global issue. The maintenance of long-term stability of HMs in soil during immobilization remediation is a challenge. Microwave (MW) technology can promote the immobilization of HMs in the form of crystals and minerals, thus enhancing their resistance of corrosion. This review provides a comprehensive introduction to the basics of MW irradiation through 177 papers, and reviews the research progress of MW involvement in the immobilization of soil HMs in 10 years. The effects of MW parameter settings, absorber/fixative types and soil physicochemical properties on immobilized HMs are investigated. The immobilization mechanisms of HMs are discussed, high-temperature physical encapsulation and chemical stabilization are the two basic mechanisms in the immobilization process. MW has a unique heating method to achieve efficient remediation by shortening remediation time, reducing the activation energy of reactions and promoting the transformation of stabilization products. Finally, the current limitations of MW in the remediation of HMs contaminated soils are systematically discussed and the corresponding proposed solutions are presented which may provide directions for further laboratory studies. There are still serious problems in taking the results obtained in the laboratory to the full scale. Thus, process optimization, scale-up, design and demonstration are strongly desired. In summary, this review may help new researchers to seize the research frontier in MW and can serve as a reference for future development of MW technology in soil remediation.
Dissolution of Copper and Nickel Mine Tailings in Sulfuric Acid Heated with Microwave

Abstract:The sulfuric acid leaching process of tailings by using microwave was studied in this paper.The effects of sulfuric acid concentration,liquid to solid ratio and reaction time on the leaching ratio were also investigated.Without agitation,the optimum microwave heating conditions of sulfuric acid concentration 5.0 mol/L and liquid/solid ratio 5.0 mL/g are superior to those of water bathing heating.In addition,microwave heating for 15 min can yield the same effect as that of water bathing heating for 2～3 h.In addition,microwave heating for 1/6 reaction time of water bathing time can produce the same acid-leaching rate,with much lower sulfuric acid and liquid to solid ratio.The microwave heating of tailings for some time followed by addition of sulfuric acid for leaching can be helpful to the dissolution of tailings and enhance the acid-leaching rate.Under the conditions of microwave heating of 1 h,sulfuric acid concentration 8.0 mol/L and liquid/solid ratio 5.0 mL/g,most of the minerals in tailings can be dissolved except tremolite.The results indicate that,compared with the traditional heating methods,microwave heating could greatly improve the acid-leaching rate of tailings.
STUDY ON MICROWAVE VITRIFICATION TECHNOLOGY OF HEAVY METAL CONTAMINATED SOIL

Abstract:The vitrification of the heavy metal(Cd) in soil by microwave heating technology was studied,and the factors influencing vitrification effect were investigated in this article.The results showed that as microwave irradiation time and power increased,the soil gradually aggregated,crystallized and appeared vitrification phenomenon,and therefore Cd immobilization efficiency increased significantly.Exposure to the microwave power of 539 W,Cd immobilization efficiency reached 95% in 5 min.Adding some borax into the soil could decrease the fusion temperature significantly,which sequentially shortened microwave irradiation time and saved energy consumption.Positive effect of the addition quantity of active carbon was remarkable while its size had little impact.In addition,structure of the vitrification formed from microwave irradiation was very firm and dense and the Cd leaching concentration in the vitrification met the limit of national standard,so it is feasible to realize the contaminated soil resource.
Immobilization of Heavy Metals and Organic Substances in Drying Sludge by Means of Microwave Radiation

Abstract:The objective of present study was to investigate the heavy metals(Cu2+,Cr6+,Zn2+ and Pb2+) and organic substances behavior during leaching procedure of sludge which was dried by microwave radiation and blast heating respectively.And the immobilization mechanism of contaminations in microwave drying sludge was discussed further.It was found that the wet sludge could be dried quickly in the 900W microwave and the energy consumption was much lower than the blast heating.The efficiency of stabilization of drying sludge was evaluated from the results of leaching tests.The results showed that the concentration of organic substances in the supernatant liquid from the microwave drying sludge in the aclinic shake leaching test was declined by 28% compared with the sludge dried by blast heating.And also the heavy metals concentrations of microwave drying sludge in the leaching test of simulated natural waters conditions were much less than the blast heating one.The immobilizing effect of heavy metals in microwave drying sludge was determined in descending order as Pb2+,Zn2+,Cr6+,Cu2+.The chemical composition,crystal condition and pore structure were explored by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction.And it was revealed that organic substances and heavy metals could be fixed into the 0.075 um ～0.75 um pores of stabilized matrices by five important immobilization procedures,crack the cell wall in the wet sludge,pile up the fragments of cell wall,package up the organic substances and metals in the fragments,fixing the organic substances and metals, and fusing to form pores.

Abstract:Microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) is a versatile bioelectrochemical wastewater treatment system. Metal, hydrogen, methane, acetate, ethanol, and other resources could be recovered from wastewater via MEC. It has been applied in integrating production capacity and pollution control for its significant superiority and potential in heavy metal-containing wastewater (HMW) treatment. The main points of this review are as follows: (1) An introduction to MECs, including their operating principles and voltage losses. (2) An overview of heavy metal ions removal: theoretical foundations and effects of various MEC configurations. (3) Research progress on heavy metal ions removal mechanisms, including cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd), among others. (4) Current challenges and prospects in heavy metal ions removal via MEC. Furthermore, this review expounds problems inherent in MEC as well as those strategies; it also discusses several future opportunities and needs for the utilization of MEC in practical.
