Abstract:Superhydrophobic metallic materials have drawn broad research interest because of promising applications in various fields. The mechanical stability of superhydrophobic surfaces is currently a major concern limiting their practical applications. Herein, we developed a simple method to fabricate robust superhydrophobic surfaces on stainless steel via direct ultrafast laser microprocessing. Of note is that the fabricated superhydrophobic surfaces can withstand mechanical abrasion against an 800 grit SiC sandpaper for 2.3 m at an applied pressure of 5.5 kPa without losing superhydrophobicity. It is proposed that the robust superhydrophobicity may be attributable to the formation of unique hierarchical micro-/nanostructures and a nonpolar carbon layer on the surface. The hierarchical structures are composed of laser-created micropillars and ablation-induced nanoparticles. The fabricated surfaces exhibit good thermal stability and still show superhydrophobicity after thermal treatment at 100 °C for 120 min, which is related to the inorganic nature of metallic materials. An excellent anti-icing property is achieved on the fabricated surfaces with the water droplets on it retaining the liquid state for over 500 min at -8.5 ± 0.5 °C, which benefits from the obtained superhydrophobicity, based on classic nucleation theory and the heat transfer between the rough solid surface and water droplet. We envision that the presented method provides a facile and effective route to fabricate large-area superhydrophobic surfaces with robust mechanical stability and excellent anti-icing property.

Abstract:Fabrication superhydrophobic surface on 316L stainless steel to improve its wear resistance and corrosion resistance is crucial for its applications in marine and medical implant fields. In this paper, a novel method for preparing superhydrophobic surface by femtosecond laser-chemical method, which combined laser machining with chemically assisted thermal decomposition of stearic acid. Femtosecond laser irradiation induced LIPSS (Laser-induced periodic surface structures) on the bottom surface of the designed structure while obtaining the macro-structure, and finally form multiscale structures. The macrostructure protects the micro-nanostructures with lower surface energy while resisting wear, thereby improving the durability of the superhydrophobic surface. The research shows that the surface of the honeycomb structure (0.1 mm of depth, 0.4 mm of side length) processed at 4.5 W laser power, 800 kHz frequency and 750 mm/s scanning speed has the best hydrophobic properties, and the contact/sliding angle reaches 154.2°/8.9°. The analysis found that the LIPSS features on the surface is a strong hydrophobic area, and the unablated area is a weak hydrophobic area. The investigation of chemical stability, corrosion and wear resistance of superhydrophobic surface found that the samples prepared by femtosecond laser-chemical method has better properties than those of stearic acid coating.

Abstract:Fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces induced by femtosecond laser is a research hotspot of superhydrophobic surface studies nowadays. We present a simple and easily-controlled method for fabricating stainless steel-based superhydrophobic surfaces. The method consists of microstructuring stainless steel surfaces by irradiating samples with femtosecond laser pulses and silanizing the surfaces. By low laser fluence, we fabricated typical laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on the submicron level. The apparent contact angle (CA) on the surface is 150.3°. With laser fluence increasing, we fabricated periodic ripples and periodic cone-shaped spikes on the micron scale, both covered with LIPSS. The stainless steel-based surfaces with micro- and submicron double-scale structure have higher apparent CAs. On the surface of double-scale structure, the maximal apparent CA is 166.3° and at the same time, the sliding angle (SA) is 4.2°.

Abstract:This paper aims to utilize a nanosecond laser and a two-step laser etching method on a 304 stainless steel plate to construct a multi-scale hierarchical composite micro-nano superhydrophilic surface. This surface combines various characteristics such as micro-nano, multi-scale, layered, and multi-level features. By creating this unique surface microstructure, we can alter the surface morphology and roughness to further enhance the mechanical durability and wetting performance of the superhydrophilic stainless steel surface. Through this approach, the constructed surface exhibits strong hydrophilic properties and can withstand wear for distances up to and beyond 6 m.

Abstract:Preparing underwater superoleophobic surface is an effective method to solve the problems of oil adhesion on the underwater surfaces and oil spill in water. However, the underwater superoleophobic surfaces at present are not reliable in practical application due to their poor stability under corrosion and abrasion. Herein, we proposed a facile method to fabricate a robust superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic surface. The surface is combined with micro honeycomb frame structure and nanostructure, which was fabricated by laser ablation. The surface with the honeycomb pattern shows strong hydrophilicity with a water contact angle of 0° and stable underwater oil repellency with an underwater oil contact angle of 164.9°. Furthermore, it can maintain its excellent underwater superoleophobic performance after 120 cycles of abrasion and corrosion of 6 h at pH = 1–14.

Abstract:An easy-to-implement method by which to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces inspired taro leaf was successfully applied on 316L stainless steel via combining nanosecond laser (NL) processing and spin-coating techniques. The laser-textured surface composed of microscale frameworks and central bumps was fabricated by NL processing based on properly designed biomimetic patterns, and a layer of nanoscale carbon black/polydimethylsiloxane (CB/PDMS) particles was covered on it by spin-coating. The effect of pattern parameters (i.e., the inscribed circle radius of framework and the radius of central bump) on wettability of biomimetic surface was investigated. All as-prepared biomimetic surfaces with micro-nano hierarchical structures showed excellent superhydrophobicity with the water contact angle of ∼155° and contact angle hysteresis of ∼2°. By comparing the untreated surface, the wetting behavior and evaporation mode of the biomimetic surface occurred an obvious transformation. Meanwhile, experiments indicated that the biomimetic surface not only had liquid-repelling and self-cleaning functions, but also maintained remarkable mechanical robustness and superhydrophobic durability. The method is efficient for fabricating biomimetic superhydrophobic surfaces applied to liquid-repelling, evaporation-transforming and self-cleaning fields.

Abstract:Creation of hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces has attracted broad attention as a promising solution for protection of metal surfaces from corrosive environments. This work investigates the capability of nanosecond fiber laser surface texturing followed by a low energy coating in the fabrication of hydrophobic 17-4 PH stainless steel surfaces as an alternative to the ultrashort lasers previously utilized for hydrophobic surfaces production. Laser texturing of the surface followed by applying the hydrophobic coating resulted in steady-state contact angles of up to 145°, while the non-textured coated base metal exhibited the contact angle of 121°. The microstructure and compositional analysis results confirmed that the laser texturing process neither affects the microstructure of the base metal nor causes elemental loss from the melted regions during the ultrafast melting process. However, the electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the water-repelling property of the surface did not contribute to the anticorrosion capability of the substrate. The resultant higher corrosion current density, lower corrosion potential, and higher corrosion rate of the laser textured surfaces were ascribed to the size of fabricated surface micro-grooves, which cannot retain the entrapped air inside the hierarchical structure when fully immersed in a corrosive medium, thus degrading the material’s corrosion performance.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted extensive attention over the past decade, primarily due to their self-cleaning, corrosion resistance and anti-bacterial abilities. However, it is still a challenge to prepare superhydrophobic surfaces with good chemical stability, low cost, environmental friendliness, and suitable for large-scale production applications. In this paper, a hybrid laser-chemical method to prepare superhydrophobic micro-patterns on 316L stainless steel were put forward, which combined laser ablation and laser assisted chemical decomposition of stearic acid (C17H35COOH). Experiments show that under the laser power of 10 W, the frequency of 150 kHz, the speed of 20 mm/s, and the mesh spacing of 75 μm, the best superhydrophobicity with a static contact angle of 153.9° can be obtained. The fundamental mechanism of laser-chemical method is the increase of the non-polar CC(H) bond of specimen by laser assisted hydrodeoxygenation reaction of stearic acid. Moreover, unlike laser ablation-stearic acid coated specimen, the specimen prepared by laser-chemical method can maintain superhydrophobicity after 10 min of ultrasonic cleaning. The electrochemical corrosion experiments shows that the hybrid laser-chemical method can manufacture superhydrophobic specimens with better chemical durability and corrosion resistance.

Abstract:A two-step method was used to fabricate a superhydrophobic surface on steel sheet, nickel foam (NF), and stainless steel mesh (SS). The micro-nano structure of Layer Double Hydroxide (LDH) is obtained by hydrothermal method. The synergistic effect of triethoxy(octyl)silane (TTOS) and FeNi-LDH produces a superhydrophobic surface. Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used for structural characterization, which confirmed the synthesis and hydrophobic modification of FeNi-LDH. The time of the hydrothermal reaction was discussed, and the results showed that the water contact angle (WCA) of the superhydrophobic surface fabricated by setting the reaction time to 12 hours can reach 169±2°. Electrochemical tests also show that the prepared superhydrophobic surface can achieve a corrosion inhibition rate of 96.3%. In addition, the superhydrophobic NF and superhydrophobic SS prepared by the same method were tested for antifouling and oil-water separation performance. The results show that, due to the excellent non-wettability of the surface, the preparation method of this superhydrophobic surface has great potential value in the fields of anti-corrosion, anti-fouling and oil-water separation.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surface is an effective strategy to prevent corrosion and pollution of stainless steel. Nevertheless, toxic modifying agents are often used to fabricate superhydrophobic surface on stainless steel, which is a great threat to the environment. Here, an environmental- friendly strategy was used for fabricating water-repellent stainless steel mesh with dendritic hierarchical structures through vacuum vapor deposition technology and replacement reaction. The fabricated superhydrophobic surface exhibited water bounce performance and repellency for liquids. Moreover, the good self-cleaning and anti-stain properties against contaminates and impurities were also displayed. In addition, the electrochemical experiments indicated the superhydrophobic surface obtained better anti-corrosive property compared with pristine stainless steel mesh. The whole preparation process is eco-friendly and easy to control. It is found that the superhydrophobicity can be acquired through heat treatment, without the need of fluorine-containing modified materials, which can prevent environmental pollution. It is expected that the superhydrophobic surface obtained by this method will have a potential application in anti-corrosion and anti-stain fields.

Abstract:Redundant deposits formation on steel through interaction with liquids is an integral problem that results the reduction in function and durability. Here, we report a new method to form a modifier-free durable superhydrophobic and highly anti-corrosive surface by one-step electrodeposition method. Surface morphologies, chemical composition and wettability characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and optical contact angle measurements, respectively. The highest average water contact angle (CA) 167.7° ± 2.4° on fabricated surface achieved numerically and experimentally. The phase-field simulation for transient evolution of water droplet performed for superhydrophobic surface revealed that the rate of contact angle increase is greater at beginning and smaller as the equilibrium state. Superwetting surfaces exhibit enhancement of corrosion resistance based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Tafel polarization curves and shear abrasion tests with excellent mechanical durability. Furthermore, the characteristics of as-fabricated mechanically durable and the stabilization of chemicals on the surface were observed. This work gives a new pathway to attain chemically and mechanically stable, eco-friendly, and corrosive-resistant superhydrophobic coating with low surface energy (βs = −0.937) on steel 316L and should have a reassuring future in increasing range of industrial applications.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted considerable interest due to their various functions and wide applications. Most of the existing methods for preparing superhydrophobic surfaces are only applicable to one or several specific substrate materials, which have the disadvantage of substrate-dependent. Here, an approach for the fabrication of substrate-independent superhydrophobic surfaces based on femtosecond laser-chemical hybrid processing is proposed. Micro/nanostructures are constructed on substrates via femtosecond laser direct writing technology, followed by modification with stearic acid. The laser-treated samples coated with stearic acid (LT x -SA, x presents different samples) surfaces have excellent superhydrophobic and self-cleaning properties. Moreover, it is worth noting that the LT x -SA surfaces remain stable superhydrophobicity after heating substrate from 20 °C to 100 °C, washing substrate 10 times, and exposing substrate to air for 60 days. This work provides an efficient and facile strategy for achieving substrate-independent superhydrophobic surfaces.

Abstract:Metal surfaces play a crucial role in numerous applications, from self-cleaning and anti-icing to anti-fogging and oil-water separation. The regulation of their wettability is essential to enhance their performance in these areas. This paper proposes a multi-state regulation method for metal surface wettability, leveraging nanosecond laser ablation. By creating non-uniform microstructures on a metal surface, the contact area between the solid and liquid phases can be increased, resulting in the attainment of superhydrophilic properties (contact angle (CA), ranging from 4.6° to 8.5°). Conversely, the construction of uniform microstructures leads to a decreased solid-liquid contact area, thereby rendering the metal surface hydrophilic (CA = 12.2°–53°). Furthermore, through heat treatment on a surface with uniform microstructures, organic matter adsorption can be promoted while simultaneously reducing surface energy. This process results in the metal surface acquiring hydrophobic properties (CA = 92.1°–133.5°), facilitated by the "air cushion effect." Building on the hydrophobic surface, stearic acid modification can further reduce surface energy, ultimately bestowing the metal surface with superhydrophobic properties (CA = 150.1°–152.7°, and sliding angle = 3.8°). Performance testing has validated the durability and self-cleaning effectiveness of the fabricated superhydrophobic surface while also highlighting the excellent anti-fog performance of the superhydrophilic surface. These findings strongly indicate the immense potential of these surfaces in various engineering applications.

Abstract:Mixed SiO2 nanoparticles with different ratios and contents were dispersed in hydrophobic fluorinated/silanized polymers. The mixture was bonded to the A3 steel substrate with an adhesive to obtain a superhydrophobic surface with excellent performance. The appearance, hardness, adhesion, and surface wettability of the obtained coatings with different ratios of mixed nanoparticles were characterized. Then, a series of superhydrophobic coatings with good hardness, adhesion, and crack-free surfaces were selected for further systematic investigation. The results showed that the coatings with contact angle around 151 degrees similar to x223C 157 degrees can be obtained when the hydrophobic polymer is combined with different proportions of mixed nanoparticles. The surface chemical composition of these coatings changed little while the surface structure changed significantly. The mixing ratios of nanoparticles had a significant effect on the surface morphology and sliding angle. Smaller nanoparticles had a greater impact on superhydrophobic coating performance than larger nanoparticles. Moreover, the mechanical robustness and corrosion resistance of the superhydrophobic coatings regularly changed with the proportions of smaller nanoparticles. Water droplets are easy to roll on the surface of the superhydrophobic coating with hierarchical rough structure, which makes it possesses an excellent self-cleaning performance.
