Abstract:Aluminide coating is a promising candidate material to prevent the LBE corrosion on structural materials in Generation IV lead-based reactor. However, the corrosion resistance and its failure mechanism remain a long-standing challenge. Here, we synthesis an amorphous Al2O3 coating via radio frequency magnetron sputtering (RFMS). Corrosion pits are observed at the macro scale on the coated substrate after LBE corrosion at 550 °C for 2000 h, because of the consumption of ferritic/-martensitic (F/M) steel caused by oxidation. In particular, the volume expansion of corrosion nodules while covered by the Al2O3 coating is investigated. Furthermore, calculation results demonstrate that the concentration of Pri-stress in corrosion products induced coating failure. A model based on corrosion morphology and related properties is proposed to illustrate the stress distribution of corrosion nodules and the further failure mechanism of coatings. This work not only provides a deep understanding on the failure mechanism of brittle ceramic coating, but also paves the way for designing high-performance coatings in reactor.

Abstract:A high-temperature flow loop system was designed to study the effects of buffers agents, temperature and flow conditions on the release of aluminum corrosion products in post-LOCA scenarios. Inductively coupled plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques are used to characterize the aluminum release in solution and the oxide layers formed on the surface. Aluminum release in trisodium phosphate solution is significantly less than in sodium tetraborate solution under same operating conditions. Flow accelerated aluminum release is evident, and power law correlations between the aluminum release rate and mass transfer coefficient are developed, allowing transfer of data between different flow systems.

Abstract:In pressurized water reactors, LiOH may be concentrated in some areas, leading to the accelerated corrosion of fuel claddings. Injecting boric acid into primary coolants can mitigate the accelerated corrosion effect of LiOH on Zircaloys, but the effects of boron content on the corrosion behavior of the Zr-Sn-Nb alloy are still unknown. This work focused on the corrosion and hydrogen absorption behavior at 360 °C/18.6 MPa in 100 mg/kg LiOH solutions with 0 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg, and 200 mg/kg boron contents for up to 510 days, aiming to study the effect of boron content on corrosion resistance in LiOH solutions. Corrosion kinetics, microstructures of oxide films, hydrogen absorption concentrations and hydride morphology were obtained after the test. The results show that injecting boron in LiOH solutions can significantly reduce the corrosion weight gain, hydrogen concentration, and hydrogen length of Zr-Sn-Nb alloys, that is, improving corrosion resistance effectively. During the oxidation of the Zr-Sn-Nb alloy, B3+ and Li+ incorporate in oxide films. The incorporation of Li+ may lead to the generation of oxygen vacancies, which can carry oxygen from the solutions to O/M interface, accelerating corrosion. The incorporation of B3+ in oxide films will slow down the oxidation of Zr-Sn-Nb alloys by reducing the oxygen vacancies caused by Li+ aggregation.

Abstract:Experiments were conducted to investigate the aluminium corrosion in the simulated containment pool environment following a loss-of-coolant accident at a nuclear power plant. The results show an identical power law correlation between the corrosion rate and mass transfer coefficient for different flow systems. Aluminium corrosion is inhibited by the silicon leached from the insulation materials, and the inhibition efficiency increases with the silicon concentration due to the increase of Al2SiO5 or SiO2 content in the passivation layer. The concurrent corrosion of copper and iron has little influence on aluminium corrosion while the presence of zinc significantly retards the aluminium corrosion.

Abstract:The corrosion behaviors of nuclear grade commercial alloys 690 and 800 were studied by in situ electrochemical measurements using a self-built high temperature and high pressure water loop system, combining with SEM observation and XPS analysis. The results show that the corrosion potentials of alloys 690 and 800 decrease gradually with immersion time increasing, while the immersion time has no obvious impact on the result from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A large number of needle-like oxides have been found on the surface of alloy 690 after being exposed to high temperature and high pressure water for 408 h. For alloy 800, except needle-like oxides, many particle oxides are also observed. For alloy 690, Cr is rich at inner side of oxide film, while it is rich at outer side of oxide film for alloy 800. Alloy 690 shows better corrosion resistance than alloy 800 in high temperature and high pressure water. After immersion experiment, the contents of Ni2+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions in the test water solutions are 0.1x10(-6), 0.1x10(-6) and 0.3x10(-6), respectively.

Abstract:Sodium attack of both aluminium (99.999%, 99.8% and 99.5% purity) and Al12%Si alloy is investigated. Aluminium of 99.999% purity is immune, but alumililum of 99.8%or 99.5% purity and the Al-Si alloy are attacked by molten sodium at 350 - 500℃. The corrosion product formed on the surface of the materials is identified as the AlNaSi compound.This suggests that sodium attack of both aluminium and Al-12%Si alloy is the result of a reaction between sodium and the silicon contained in the aluminium.

Abstract:In this work, the effects of the tropical marine atmospheric environment on the corrosion behaviour of the 7B04-T74 aluminium alloy were systematically investigated by using accelerated testing, together with corrosion kinetic analysis, microstructure observation, product composition analysis, and potentiodynamic polarization curve tests. The weight loss method was used for the corrosion kinetics analysis. The surface morphology and corrosion products transformation law were investigated by OM, SEM, EDS, and XPS. The electrochemical characteristics were studied using potentiodynamic polarization curves. The research indicated that the 7B04-T74 aluminium alloy has eminent corrosion resistance in the tropical marine atmospheric environment. Localized pitting corrosion occurred rapidly in the tropical marine atmosphere. In the later stage of corrosion, the corrosion of aluminium alloy did not become serious. Specifically, no obvious intergranular corrosion was found, which is related to the thermal treatment method. Corrosion products included Al(OH)3, Al2O3, and AlCl3, of which Al(OH)3 is the most notable.

Abstract:The performance of structural materials in lead or lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) systems is evaluated. The materials evaluated included refractory metals (W, Mo, and Ta), several U.S. steels [austenitic steel (316L), carbon steels (F-22, Fe-Si), ferritic/martensitic steels (HT-9 and 410)], and several experimental Fe-Si-Cr alloys that were expected to demonstrate corrosion resistance. The materials were exposed in either an LBE rotating electrode or a dynamic corrosion cell for periods from 100 to 1000 h at temperatures of 400, 500, 600, and 700°C, depending on material and exposure location. Weight change and optical scanning electron microscopy or X-ray analysis of the specimen were used to characterize oxide film thickness, corrosion depth, microstructure, and composition changes. The results of corrosion tests validate the excellent resistance of refractory metals (W, Ta, and Mo) to LBE corrosion. The tests conducted with stainless steels (410, 316L, and HT-9) produced mass transfer of elements (e.g., Ni and Cr) into the LBE, resulting in degradation of the material. With Fe-Si alloys a Si-rich layer (as SiO2) is formed on the surface during exposure to LBE from the selective dissolution of Fe.

Abstract:To clarify the corrosion control effect of Zn injection into hydrothermal environments, the oxide films on Alloy 690 in the deaerated borated and lithiated water have been investigated using potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectra at 300°C and ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. With Zn injection in the solution, ZnCr2O4 and ZnFe2O4 were formed in the inner and outer layers of the oxide films on Alloy 690, respectively, through exchange reactions between Zn2+ and Fe2+/Ni2+. A simple model for oxide film structure change and the mechanism of corrosion inhibition by Zn injection is proposed and discussed.

Abstract:Aluminum alloys are extensively used to manufacture mechanical components. However, when exposed to alkaline environments, like lubricants, refrigerants, or detergents, they can be corroded, reducing their durability. For this reason, the aim of this study is to investigate the influence of aggressive alkaline solutions (i.e., pH and presence of chlorides) on the corrosion resistance of three aluminum alloys (AA 5083-H111, AA 6082-T6, and AA 7075-T6) with and without anodizing treatments. Open circuit potential (EOCP) and anodic polarization measurements were carried out and typical corrosion parameters such as corrosion current density (icor) and corrosion rate (CR) were determined. Morphology of the corrosion attack and samples microstructure were investigated by scanning electron microscope. Results show that corrosion behavior of the three investigated alloys is influenced by (i) the aggressiveness of the testing environments; (ii) the thickness of the anodizing treatment; (iii) the alloy chemical composition; (iv) the distribution of intermetallic phases in the aluminum matrix. Moreover, three galvanic series have been built also testing other metallic alloys commonly used in mechanical applications, i.e., carbon steel (C40), stainless-steel (AISI 304), and Cu-based alloys (Cu-Ni alloy and CW 617 N, respectively). Results clearly indicate that galvanic series play a fundamental role when it is necessary to select an alloy for a specific environment, highlighting the thermodynamic conditions for corrosion occurrence. On the other hand, kinetic measurements and microstructural studies carried out on the three aluminum alloys stress the importance of the surface treatments and relevant thickness as well as the effect of metal exposure. Future work will involve the study of other surface treatments on aluminum alloys and the evaluation of their corrosion behavior in acidic environments.

Abstract:The corrosion behaviour of the Al-1 % Mg, Al-3 % Mg, Al-5 % Mg and Al-3 % Mg-0.15 % Zr alloys in molten sodium was investigated. The morphology of the corrosion products and the alloying element distribution of the specimens were analyzed by using OM, SEM and EDS. The results showed that the effects of the magnesium content and the immersion temperature on the corrosion of the specimens are related to beta phase (Mg5Al8).

Abstract:The key material issue for the commercialization of advanced lead cooled fast reactors and accelerator driven subcritical systems is the compatibility between structural materials and lead based coolants. Structural steel materials need to have excellent corrosion resistance in high-temperature liquid lead bismuth eutectic (LBE) alloy. Aluminum forming austenitic steel (AFA steel) has excellent corrosion resistance in extreme environments due to its ability to form an Al2O3 film on its surface. However, excessively high Ni elements are more easily dissolved or oxidized in LBE compared to Fe and Cr elements. Therefore, this article investigates the effect of reducing Ni element composition (25-Ni steel and 18-Ni steel) on the corrosion resistance of steel in LBE. Surface treatment can to some extent protect the substrate from corrosion, so this article explores whether it has a protective effect on AFA steel in LBE by generating Al 2 O 3 through high-temperature pre oxidation. The morphology and structure of the oxide layer of AFA steel corroded for 600 h in LBE with saturated dissolved oxygen at 550 °C were characterized by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and other technologies. The results indicate that the oxide film formed after corrosion of 18-Ni steel is thinner than that of 25-Ni steel. Performing high-temperature pre oxidation is beneficial for forming a protective Al 2 O 3 oxide film on the surface of the sample, thereby reducing the thickness of the oxide layer and improving the material's LBE corrosion resistance. The reduction in thickness of the oxide layer generated after pre oxidation of 18-Ni steel is greater than that of 25-Ni steel, so the anti-corrosion effect of 18-Ni steel after pre oxidation is better than that of 25-Ni steel.

Abstract:Anti-corrosion coatings on Zircaloy cladding have been extensively explored to guarantee the safe operation and scale up industrialization of nuclear reactors. In this work, Mo and Al2O3 powders were successfully coated on Zircaloy-4 by air plasma spraying. Their morphologies, phases of corrosion products and hardness were analyzed. After exposure to lithiated water at 360 degrees C and 18.5 MPa for 500 h, Mo coating fell off and complex phases were formed on the residual bonding layer. The corrosion products were NiO(OH), MoO3, Mo sub-oxides, ZrO2, Zr suboxides, Al2O3, intermetallic Ni-Al compound, Li2Ni2(MoO4)3, NiCr2O4 and NiFe2O4. Corrosion mechanism of Al2O3 coating was discussed in details. Cracks and pores evolved on the coating, and the surface phases were dominantly Al2O3 and AlO(OH). ZrO2, SnO, intermetallic Zr-Al, Ni-Al-O, Li-Al-O, NiFe2O4 and NiCr2O4 were also detected in the presence of LiOH.
CORROSION BEHAVIOR OF ALLOY 690TT IN HIGH TEMPERATURE LEAD-CONTAINING CAUSTIC SOLUTION

Abstract:A small amount of PbO could induce the passive film of alloy 690TT unstable in the caustic solutions at room temperature.The immersion tests were carried out in high temperature lead-containing caustic solutions in a static autoclave.The results showed that alloy 690TT immersed in 10%NaOH+10 g/L PbO solution suffered from intergranular attack(IGA) at 330℃,and the specimens lost weight.The coarser the original surface of the samples,the more serious the samples suffered from corrosion.IGA was observed and developed as intergranular stress corrosion(IGSCC) with respect of residual stress.While no IGA was found for the samples immersed in 10%NaOH solution at 330℃.

Abstract:The uniform corrosion behavior of model FeCrAl alloys as well as commercial Zircaloy-4 as reference material were investigated in 360 degrees C borated and lithiated water. The results reveal that FeCrAl alloys exhibited better corrosion resistance than Zircaloy-4. It is found that the oxide films formed on the FeCrAl alloys are composed of outer Fe3O4 layer, inner layer consisting of compact spinel layer and porous spinel layer, and transition layer containing Al-Cr-rich oxides and matrix enriched with Fe degrees. The spinel oxides in the inner layer are FeFe2-x-y-zCrxAlyMozO4. The corrosion mechanism of FeCrAl alloys in high temperature water is discussed. Abstract:The effects of Cl~- concentration(0.5—2 mol/L) and temperature(25—80℃) on the corrosion behavior of alloy 690 in borate buffer solution were investigated using potentiodynamic polarization (PD),electrochemical impedence spectroscopy(EIS) and semiconductor capacitance method (Mott-Scottky relation).Atomic force microscope(AFM).X ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and potential-pH diagrams were employed to analyze the corrosion products.All of the polarization curves exhibited two passive regions and intcrgranular corrosion was observed on all samples.With the increase in both Cl~- concentration and temperature,the corrosion potential decreased and the corrosion current density became larger.Furthermore,increasing the temperature also resulted in lower pitting potentials and narrower passive regions.After anodic polarization for 45 min,the film formed in the first passive region with lower potential was composed of Cr_2O_3,Fe_2O_3 and Ni(OH)_2,and behaved like a mixed-type semiconductor.while a thicker but less compact Ni_2O_3 film was formed in the second passive range with higher potential and behaved like a n-type semiconductor.The influences of Cl~- and temperature on the corrosion behavior were discussed.

Abstract:Pb 83 Mg 17 is expected to be a potential coolant for lead cooled fast reactors because of its less toxic radioactive products and possible acceptable corrosion rate without additional oxygen control in comparison with LBE. In order to evaluate the compatibility of structural steels and Pb-Mg, two F/M steels (SIMP, T91) and two austenitic steels (316L, 15-15Ti) were tested in Pb-Mg at 350, 450 and 550 °C with exposure time ranging from 100 h to 2000 h in this work. Compared with the slight corrosion or no obvious corrosion of F/M steels, austenitic steels have suffered very serious dissolution corrosion which is significantly influenced by temperature and exposure time. The corrosion rate of austenitic steels is controlled by dissolution or diffusion mechanism at different temperatures.

Abstract:Moist-heat corrosion simulation experiments were conducted on commercial pure aluminum and aluminum casting alloy, ZL102 and ZL109 respectively. SEM, EDS and XRD were used to investigate the microscopic morphology and chemical compositions of intermediate phases and corrosion products in aluminum casting alloys. Effects of surface flaw and intermediate phases on the atmospheric corrosion were also investigated. The results show that (1) the electrochemical reaction proceeds at the local galvanic cells constituted of Al 6Cu 3Si-phase particles and Al matrix around the micro-pore adsorbing water and aggressive Cl -, hence Al dissolves to produce local spotted corrosion. (2) the corrosion products are mainly composed of insoluble aluminum hydroxides, besides a few eutectic Si and aluminum oxide. The results of electrochemical measurements in 0.5 mol/L NaCl solution also show that due to the existence of intermediate phase, Al 6Cu 3Si-phase, the ZL102 and ZL109 alloy are easier to be corroded than Al in Cl - ion containing solution.

Abstract:Abstract Aluminum alloys play an important role in circular metallurgy due to their good recyclability and 95% energy gain when made from scrap. Their low density and high strength translate linearly to lower greenhouse gas emissions in transportation, and their excellent corrosion resistance enhances product longevity. The durability of Al alloys stems from the dense barrier oxide film strongly bonded to the surface, preventing further degradation. However, despite decades of research, the individual elemental reactions and their influence on the nanoscale characteristics of the oxide film during corrosion in multicomponent Al alloys remain unresolved questions. Here, we build up a direct correlation between the near-atomistic picture of the corrosion oxide film and the solute reactivity in the aqueous corrosion of a high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy. We reveal the formation of nanocrystalline Al oxide and highlight the solute partitioning between the oxide and the matrix and segregation to the internal interface. The sharp decrease in partitioning content of Mg in the peak-aged alloy emphasizes the impact of heat treatment on the oxide stability and corrosion kinetics. Through H isotopic labelling with deuterium, we provide direct evidence that the oxide acts as a trap for this element, pointing at the essential role of the Al oxide might act as a kinetic barrier in preventing H embrittlement. Our findings advance the mechanistic understanding of further improving the stability of Al oxide, guiding the design of corrosion-resistant alloys for potential applications.
