Abstract:We study a Ginzburg–Landau equation of parabolic type in inhomogeneous superconductors. It is proved that the vortices are attracted by impurities so that they are pinned by inhomogeities in the superconducting materials. This fact was predicted recently by Chapman and Richardson using a method of formal matched asymptotics.

Abstract:This paper continues our study of vortices in Ginzburg-Landau theories with special attention to applications in superconductivity. In another paper, we derived asymptotic equations governing the dynamics of interacting vortices. Here, we study the hydrodynamic limit of these vortices. For vortices in the solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the hydrodynamic equation is the incompressible Euler's equation in fluid mechanics. For vortices in the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, the hydrodynamic equations can be thought of as being the complement of the Euler equations. Preliminary results on the numerical studies of the hydrodynamic equations are presented. As applications of the hydrodynamic formalism, we study the pinning of vortex liquids by periodic potentials, and the propagation of magnetic fields into type-II superconductors. The hydrodynamic formalism suggests that to leading order, the vortex liquids are pinned even at small but positive temperature.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of the vortex dynamics of the Cauchy problem for a parabolic Ginzburg–Landau system which simulates inhomogeneous type II superconducting materials and three–dimensional superconducting thin films having variable thickness. We will prove that the vortex of the problem is moved by a codimension k mean curvature flow with external force field. Besides, we will show that the mean curvature flow depends strongly on the external force, having completely different phenomena from the usual mean curvature flow.

Abstract:The vortex dynamics of a d+is-wave superconductor is studied numerically by simulating the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations. The critical fields, the free flux flow, and the flux flow in the presence of twin-boundaries are discussed. The relaxation rate of the order parameter turns out to play an important role in the flux flow. We also address briefly the intrinsic Hall effect in d- and d+is-wave superconductors.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of magnetic vortices in type II superconductors with normal state pinning sites using the Ginzburg-Landau equations. Simulation results demonstrate hopping of vortices between pinning sites, influenced by external magnetic fields and external currents. The system is highly nonlinear and the vortices show complex nonlinear dynamical behaviour.

Abstract:The Ginzburg-Landau equations were proposed in the superconductivity theory to describe mathematically the intermediate state of superconductors in which the normal conductivity is mixed with the superconductivity. It was understood later on that these equations play an important role also in various problems of mathematical physics. We mention here the extension of these equations to compact Riemann surfaces and Riemannian 4-manifolds. A separate interesting topic is the scattering theory of vortices reducing to the study of hyperbolic Ginzburg-Landau equations. In this review we tried to touch these interesting topics with some unsolved problems.

Abstract:New vortex solutions to the Landau-Ginzburg equations are described. These configurations, which extend the well known Abrikosov and giant magnetic vortex ones, consist of a succession of ring-like supercurrent vortices organised in a concentric pattern, possibly bound to a giant magnetic vortex then lying at their center. The dynamical and thermodynamic stability of these annular vortices is an important open issue on which hinges the direct experimental observation of such configurations. Nevertheless, annular vortices should affect indirectly specific dynamic properties of mesoscopic superconducting devices amenable to physical observation.

Abstract:The time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations describing a d-wave superconductor are simulated by the finite-element method. The equilibrium vortex structure in bulk samples, the nature of vortices in bulk and finite-size samples subject to various types of pinnings, and the transport behaviors are addressed. The extended finite-element method proves to be flexible to deal with various types of boundary conditions, desirable to simulate relaxation processes with very long time scales as well as the dynamics of vortices, especially in high-kappa superconductors.

Abstract:Based on a two-component Ginzburg-Landau theory, we find a number of interesting behaviors of vortex dynamics in the time-reversal-symmetry-breaking (T-breaking) regime of the parameter space: (i) Only one of the two types of T-breaking vortices is stable against applied currents at intermediate and high fields; (ii) For these dynamically stable vortices, the equilibrium phase transitions at the lower and/or the upper critical fields may be of first order; (iii) The free vortex flow resistivity of the T-breaking vortices is generally nonlinear, and in the case of (iii) there an resistivity discontinuities at the first-order transitions. The phase diagram of the T-breaking vortices is presented.

Abstract:In this paper, vortex dynamics of superconducting thin films are numerically investigated by the generalized time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau (TDGL) theory. Interactions between vortex motion and the motion induced energy dissipation is considered by solving the coupled TDGL equation and the heat diffusion equation. It is found that thermal coupling has significant effects on the vortex dynamics of superconducting thin films. Branching in the vortex penetration path originates from the coupling between vortex motion and the motion induced energy dissipation. In addition, the environment temperature, the magnetic field ramp rate and the geometry of the superconducting film also greatly influence the vortex dynamic behaviors. Our results provide new insights into the dynamics of superconducting vortices, and give a mesoscopic understanding on the channeling and branching of vortex penetration paths during flux avalanches.

Abstract:Using time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory we demonstrate that the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect, resulting from a Berry phase shift of the (macroscopic) wavefunction, is revealed through the dynamics of topological phase defects present in that same wavefunction. We study vortices and antivortices on the surface of a hollow superconducting cylinder, moving on circular orbits as they are subjected to the force from the current flowing parallel to the cylinder axis. Due to the AB effect the orbit deflections, caused by a magnetic field component along the cylinder axis, become periodic as a function of field, leading to strong and robust resistance oscillations.

Abstract:We derive the exact equation of motion for a vortex in two- and three- dimensional non-relativistic systems governed by the Ginzburg-Landau equation with complex coefficients. The velocity is given in terms of local gradients of the magnitude and phase of the complex field and is exact also for arbitrarily small inter-vortex distances. The results for vortices in a superfluid or a superconductor are recovered.

Abstract:We develop a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory of the vortex spin Hall effect, i.e., a spin Hall effect that is driven by the motion of superconducting vortices. For the direct vortex spin Hall effect in which an input charge current drives the transverse spin current accompanying the vortex motion, we start from the well-known Schmid-Caroli-Maki solution for the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation under the applied electric field, and find out the expression of the induced spin current. For the inverse vortex spin Hall effect in which an input spin current drives the longitudinal vortex motion and produces the transverse charge current, we microscopically construct the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation under the applied spin accumulation gradient, and calculate the induced transverse charge current as well as the open circuit voltage. The time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation and its analytical solution developed here can be a basis for more quantitative numerical simulations of the vortex spin Hall effect.
