Abstract:Here we study the asymptotic behaviour of an ODE system which describes the vortex dynamics of the complex Ginzburt-Landau equations. We prove that all the vortices are pinned together to the critical points of the pinning function.

Abstract:On the basis of resistively-shunted junction dynamics, we study vortex dynamics in two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays with asymmetrically single and bimodulated periodic pinning potential for the full range of vortex density f. The ratchet effect occurring at a certain range of temperature, current, and f, is observed in our simulation. We explain the microscopic behavior behind this effect by analyzing the vortex distribution and interaction. The reversal of the ratchet effect can be observed at several f values for a small driven current. This effect is stronger when the asymmetric potential is simultaneously introduced in two directions.

Abstract:We obtain theH 1-compactness for a system of Ginzburg-Landau equations with pinning functions and prove that the vortices of its classical solutions are attracted to the minimum points of the pinning functions. As a corollary, we construct a self-similar solution in the evolution of harmonic maps.

Abstract:This paper continues our study of vortices in Ginzburg-Landau theories with special attention to applications in superconductivity. In another paper, we derived asymptotic equations governing the dynamics of interacting vortices. Here, we study the hydrodynamic limit of these vortices. For vortices in the solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the hydrodynamic equation is the incompressible Euler's equation in fluid mechanics. For vortices in the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, the hydrodynamic equations can be thought of as being the complement of the Euler equations. Preliminary results on the numerical studies of the hydrodynamic equations are presented. As applications of the hydrodynamic formalism, we study the pinning of vortex liquids by periodic potentials, and the propagation of magnetic fields into type-II superconductors. The hydrodynamic formalism suggests that to leading order, the vortex liquids are pinned even at small but positive temperature.

Abstract:We, study the ground state of a two-dimensional vortex system with random pinnings by cooling the vortex system to zero temperature. The peak of structure factor S(k) of vortices increases with vortex density B but decreases with pin density B-phi, indicating that the vortex lattice becomes better and better ordered with increasing B. When B > B-phi, the triangular vortex lattice is observed away from the pins. Repulsive vortex interactions destroy the Mott insulator phase which is predicted to occur at B = B-phi. The crossover line between the strong Bose glass and the weak Bose glass is nearly independent of B-phi for small B-phi.

Abstract:We study a Ginzburg–Landau equation of parabolic type in inhomogeneous superconductors. It is proved that the vortices are attracted by impurities so that they are pinned by inhomogeities in the superconducting materials. This fact was predicted recently by Chapman and Richardson using a method of formal matched asymptotics.

Abstract:We derive rigorously the reduced dynamical laws for quantized vortex dynamics of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation on torus when the core size of vortex $\varepsilon\to 0$. The reduced dynamical laws of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation are governed by a mixed flow of gradient flow and Hamiltonian flow which are both driven by a renormalized energy on torus. Finally, some first integrals and analytic solutions of the reduced dynamical laws are discussed.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of magnetic vortices in type II superconductors with normal state pinning sites using the Ginzburg-Landau equations. Simulation results demonstrate hopping of vortices between pinning sites, influenced by external magnetic fields and external currents. The system is highly nonlinear and the vortices show complex nonlinear dynamical behaviour.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the gradient flow of the following Ginzburg-Landau type energy \[ F_\varepsilon(u) := \frac{1}{2}\int_{M}\vert D u\vert_g^2 +\frac{1}{2\varepsilon^2}\left(\vert u\vert_g^2-1\right)^2\mathrm{vol}_g. \] This energy is defined on tangent vector fields on a $2$-dimensional closed and oriented Riemannian manifold $M$ (here $D$ stands for the covariant derivative) and depends on a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$. If the energy satisfies proper bounds, when $\varepsilon\to 0$ the second term forces the vector fields to have unit length. However, due to the incompatibility for vector fields on $M$ between the Sobolev regularity and the unit norm constraint, critical points of $F_\varepsilon$ tend to generate a finite number of singular points (called vortices) having non-zero index (when the Euler characteristic is non-zero). These types of problems have been extensively analyzed in a recent paper by R. Ignat and R. Jerrard. As in Euclidean case, the position of the vortices is ruled by the so-called renormalized energy. In this paper we are interested in the dynamics of vortices. We rigorously prove that the vortices move according to the gradient flow of the renormalized energy, which is the limit behavior when $\varepsilon\to 0$ of the gradient flow of the Ginzburg-Landau energy.

Linearized dynamic stability for vortices of Ginzburg-Landau evolutions

Abstract:We consider the problem of dynamical stability for the $n$-vortex of the Ginzburg-Landau model. Vortices are one of the main examples of topological solitons, and their dynamic stability is the basic assumption of the asymptotic ``particle plus field'' description of interacting vortices. In this paper we focus on co-rotational perturbations of vortices and establish decay estimates for their linearized evolution in the relativistic case. One of the main ingredients is a construction of the distorted Fourier basis associated to the linearized operator at the vortex. The general approach follows that of Krieger-Schlag-Tataru and Krieger-Miao-Schlag and relies on the spectral analysis of Schrödinger operators with strongly singular potentials. Since one of the operators appearing in the linearization has zero energy solutions that oscillate at infinity, additional work is needed for our construction and to control the spectral measure. The decay estimates that we obtain are of both wave and Klein-Gordon type, and are consistent with the general theory for $2$d Schrödinger operators, including those that have an $s$-wave resonance, as in the present case, but faster decaying potentials. Finally, we give a new proof of the absence of unstable spectrum and provide an estimate on the location of embedded eigenvalues by using a suitable Lieb-Thirring inequality due to Ekholm and Frank. In particular, we show that eigenvalues must lie in the interval $(1.332,2)$, where $2$ represents the effective mass of one of the two scalar operators appearing in the linearization.

Abstract:We employ the Gross--Pitaevskii theory to model a quantized vortex depinning from a small obstacle in a two-dimensional superfluid due to an imposed background superfluid flow. We find that, when the flow's velocity exceeds a critical value, the vortex drifts orthogonally to the flow before subsequently moving parallel to it away from the pinning site. The motion of the vortex around the pinning site is also accompanied by an emission of a spiral-shaped sound pulse. Through simulations, we present a phase diagram of the critical flow velocity for vortex depinning together with an empirical formula that illustrates how the critical velocity increases with the height and width of the pinning site. By employing a variety of choices of initial and boundary conditions, we are able to obtain lower and upper bounds on the critical velocity and demonstrate the robustness of these results.

Twisted vortices in two-component Ginzburg-Landau theory

Abstract:In this note, a brief introduction to the physical and mathematical background of the two-component Ginzburg-Landau theory is given. From this theory we derive a boundary value problem whose solution can be obtained in part by solving a minimization problem using the technique of variational method, except that two of the eight boundary conditions cannot be satisfied. To overcome the difficulty of recovering the full set of boundary conditions, we employ a variety of methods, including the uniform estimation method and the bounded monotonic theorem, which may be applied to other complicated vortex problems in gauge field theories. The twisted vortex solutions are obtained as energy-minimizing cylindrically symmetric field configurations. We also give the sharp asymptotic estimates for the twisted vortex solutions at the origin and infinity.

Abstract:The dynamical phase diagrams for vortices in clean films, driven by an uniform force, and interacting with periodic pinning resulting from a columnar-defect lattice are investigated by numerical simulations of a London model, and other considerations. Dynamical phases are identified according to the spatial symmetry, and dynamical phase diagrams are studied as a function of the driving force magnitude and direction, and on the temperature, for typical vortex densities.

Abstract:We have numerically served the overdamped equation of vortex motion in a two-dimensional driven vol tex lattice with disordered pinning, in which the driving Lorentz force, the pinning force due to point defects, the intervortex interacting force, and the thermal fluctuation force are taken into account. It is found that the vortex density and pinning strength are two important factors of affecting the melting transition of a vortex lattice. At low magnetic fields, there exist hysteresis loops of the average vortex velocity and the average pinning force vs, the driving force, from which the feature of a first-order melting transition of the vortex motion can be clearly seen. As the magnetic field is increased beyond a critical value, the hysteresis loops disappear and the melting transition is replaced by a second-order glass transition. We have also studied the influence of intervortex interactions on the vortex melting transition by comparing several forms of repulsive fortes between the vortices. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract:Dynamical formulation and annihilation of vortices play a key role in the celebrated Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) theory, a universal topological mechanism describing exotic states of matter in low dimensions. Here we study the annihilation dynamics of a large number of vortices and anti-vortices generated by thermally quenching a Fermionic superfluid of $^6$Li atoms in an oblate optical geometry. Universal algebraic scaling laws in both time and space are experimentally revealed over a wide interaction range, from the attractive to the repulsive side across the Feshbach resonance, and further found to agree with a Glauber dynamics in Monte Carlo simulation of the classical XY model and with field-theoretical calculations. Our work provides a direct demonstration of the universal vortex dynamics underlying the BKT theory.

Abstract:Using the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, we simulate the inductive responses of a variety of thin-film systems containing patterned antidots with different sizes and shapes. The results for all shapes show that the kinetic inductance diverges as the applied current approaches a critical current that is below the BCS depairing current. Exploiting the similarity of the observed current-voltage behavior to that of Josephson junctions, we obtain an empirical equation that well fits the inductivity curve as a function of the applied current. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.21.054018 © 2024 American Physical Society

Disorder Pinning Effects on the Vortex Dynamics in High-T-C Superconductors

Abstract:Using molecular dynamics simulations in a two-dimensional vortex lattice, we investigate the effects of pinning disorder on the vortex motion driven by a uniform current at finite temperatures, where both repulsive interactions among vortices and thermal fluctuations are taken into account. Unlike the usual random distribution of pinning sites, we introduce a nonoverlapping random distribution of the pinning traps. Furthermore, the intensity of pinning potentials is considered to be also random. It is shown that for small vortex density the intensity randomness of pinning potentials can enhance the pinning effect on vortices in the system. Stress is put on the discussion about the influence of the pinning inhomogeneity on depinning and dynamical hysteresis behavior.
