Abstract:We study a Ginzburg–Landau equation of parabolic type in inhomogeneous superconductors. It is proved that the vortices are attracted by impurities so that they are pinned by inhomogeities in the superconducting materials. Abstract:This paper continues our study of vortices in Ginzburg-Landau theories with special attention to applications in superconductivity. In another paper, we derived asymptotic equations governing the dynamics of interacting vortices. Here, we study the hydrodynamic limit of these vortices. For vortices in the solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the hydrodynamic equation is the incompressible Euler's equation in fluid mechanics. For vortices in the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, the hydrodynamic equations can be thought of as being the complement of the Euler equations. Preliminary results on the numerical studies of the hydrodynamic equations are presented. As applications of the hydrodynamic formalism, we study the pinning of vortex liquids by periodic potentials, and the propagation of magnetic fields into type-II superconductors. The hydrodynamic formalism suggests that to leading order, the vortex liquids are pinned even at small but positive temperature.

Abstract:We, study the ground state of a two-dimensional vortex system with random pinnings by cooling the vortex system to zero temperature. The peak of structure factor S(k) of vortices increases with vortex density B but decreases with pin density B-phi, indicating that the vortex lattice becomes better and better ordered with increasing B. When B > B-phi, the triangular vortex lattice is observed away from the pins. Repulsive vortex interactions destroy the Mott insulator phase which is predicted to occur at B = B-phi. The crossover line between the strong Bose glass and the weak Bose glass is nearly independent of B-phi for small B-phi.

Abstract:The vortex dynamics of a d-wave superconductor with a regular array of pinning centers is studied numerically by solving the time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau equations. The vortex lattice configurations in systems with triangular and square arrays of pinning sites are presented for different magnetic fields. Peaks in the critical current are observed at matching fields for a triangular array of defects, while “kinks” are formed in the critical-field curves for a square array of defects. The behavior of magnetoresistivity can also be given by the information of commensurability.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of magnetic vortices in type II superconductors with normal state pinning sites using the Ginzburg-Landau equations. Simulation results demonstrate hopping of vortices between pinning sites, influenced by external magnetic fields and external currents. The system is highly nonlinear and the vortices show complex nonlinear dynamical behaviour.

Abstract:Using molecular dynamics simulations in a two-dimensional vortex lattice, we investigate the effects of pinning disorder on the vortex motion driven by a uniform current at finite temperatures, where both repulsive interactions among vortices and thermal fluctuations are taken into account. Unlike the usual random distribution of pinning sites, we introduce a nonoverlapping random distribution of the pinning traps. Furthermore, the intensity of pinning potentials is considered to be also random. It is shown that for small vortex density the intensity randomness of pinning potentials can enhance the pinning effect on vortices in the system. Stress is put on the discussion about the influence of the pinning inhomogeneity on depinning and dynamical hysteresis behavior.

Abstract:Cin the basis of self-consistent numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations on a finite-size lattice. we study the variation of the vortex bound state when an impurity potential is added to the core of an isolated vortex line in an s-wave superconductor. The local density of states is investigated at both the core and its neighbor sire. By analyzing the impurity-induced increase of the pair potential near the vortex core, we elucidate the mechanism of the vortex pinning in detail.

Abstract:We carry out a microscopic study of a vortex lattice in a strongly correlated, type-II, d-wave superconductor(SC) using Bogoliubov de Gennes (BDG) formalism. In weak-coupling theory, commonly accepted truism is that a vortex binds to impurity. We demonstrate that in unconventional SCs, the binding of vortex to an impurity depends on relevant parameters. In particular, we illustrate such dependency on the sign of impurity, i.e. attractive or repulsive, as well as doping. We emphasize that this seemingly unanticipated behavior arises from strong correlation effects and is absent in weak coupling descriptions.

Abstract:In superconducting films under an applied dc current, we analyze experimentally and theoretically the influence of engineered pinning on the vortex velocity at which the flux-flow dissipation undergoes an abrupt transition from low to high resistance. We argue, based on a nonuniform distribution of vortex velocity in the sample, that in strongly disordered systems the mean critical vortex velocity for flux-flow instability (i) has a nonmonotonic dependence on magnetic field and (ii) decreases as the pinning strength is increased. These findings challenge the generally accepted microscopic model of Larkin and Ovchinnikov (1979 J. Low. Temp. Phys. 34 409) and all subsequent refinements of this model which ignore the presence of pinning centers.

Abstract:The vortex dynamics of a d+is-wave superconductor is studied numerically by simulating the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations. The critical fields, the free flux flow, and the flux flow in the presence of twin-boundaries are discussed. The relaxation rate of the order parameter turns out to play an important role in the flux flow. We also address briefly the intrinsic Hall effect in d- and d+is-wave superconductors.

Abstract:We study the effect of different sizes and shapes of pinning centers on the vortex motion in superconducting strip in the presence of external current and magnetic field using the time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau theory. The size of pinning centers obviously affects the threshold current corresponding to the appearance of phase-slip line. The larger size results in a considerable decrease of the threshold current and a larger output voltage. For the same size, the different shapes of pinning centers lead to different behaviors of vortices. The dynamic behavior of vortices is dependent on the minimum distance dm between pinning center and the sample surface and the maximum length lm of the pinning center paralleling with the sample edge. However, the obvious changes are observed in the dynamic of vortex motion in superconductor with different pinning centers.

Abstract:We obtain theH 1-compactness for a system of Ginzburg-Landau equations with pinning functions and prove that the vortices of its classical solutions are attracted to the minimum points of the pinning functions. As a corollary, we construct a self-similar solution in the evolution of harmonic maps.

Abstract:The pinning of vortex lines by an array of nanoparticles embedded inside superconductors has become the most efficient practical way to achieve high critical currents. In this scenario, pinning occurs via trapping of the vortex-line segments, and the critical current is determined by the typical length of the trapped segments. To verify analytical estimates and develop a quantitative description of strong pinning, we numerically simulated isolated vortex lines driven through an array of nanoparticles. We found that the critical force grows roughly as the square root of the pin density and that it is strongly suppressed by thermal noise. The configurations of pinned lines are strongly anisotropic; displacements in the drive directions are much larger than those in the transverse direction. Moreover, we found that the roughening index for the longitudinal displacements exceeds 1. This indicates that the local stresses in the critical region increase with the total line length and that the elastic description breaks down in the thermodynamic limit. Thermal noise reduces the anisotropy of displacements in the critical regions and straightens the lines.

Unlike the high temperature expansion which is asymptotic, the optimized expansion is convergent. Radius of convergence on the lowest Landau level is a(T)= -3 in two dimensions (2D) and a(r)= -5 in three dimensions (3D). It allows a systematic calculation of magnetization and specific heat contributions due to thermal fluctuations of vortices in strongly type-II superconductors to a very high precision. The results are in good agreement with existing Monte Carlo simulations and experiments. Limitations of various nonperturbative and phenomenological approaches are noted. In particular we show that there is no exact intersection point of the magnetization curves both in 2D and 3D.

Abstract:The spontaneous magneto-elastic (ME) interaction dictates the coupling between vortex arrays and crystal lattice, triggered by the spontaneous vortex nucleation in mixed state. In Ginzburg–Landau theory, the pinning interaction is ascribed to the interaction energy of first-order defect strain field and spontaneous elastic field. The pinning force is therefore estimated as the force on a dislocation imposed by the spontaneous stress field. Subsequently, the first-order pinning is compared with the weak collective pinning quantitively. The magnetization contribution by the first-order pinning is a parabolic dependence with field H , while the magnetization of the collective pinning shows a severe suppression at high fields as H −3 . The difference in magnetization is attributed to the energy characterization in pinning mechanisms. As for the critical current density, the combination of first-order and collective pinning generally reproduces the experimental data of Ba 0.75 K 0.25 Fe 2 As 2 sample where the second magnetization peak (SMP) disappears. In this view, the elasticity effect in mixed state is sufficient to cause the vanishment of SMP, especially in samples with high pressure dependence of T c . Graphical abstract

Abstract:In this paper, we study the single-vortex solutions of a two-dimensional high-kappa high-field Ginzburg-Landau model of superconductivity with a constant applied current. Under a nondegeneracy condition and for appropriate ranges of the applied magnetic field and applied current, we construct some special solutions which, up to a constant shift of phase in time, are the stationary solutions of the model equation. Our result provides partial justification for the existence of a critical applied current which is the one important step towards a rigorous mathematical characterization of the interactions between the quantized vortices and applied electric current.

Abstract:The interaction between vortex and crystal lattice (periodic arrays of flux quantum and atoms) in type-II superconductors is evaluated through Ginzburg-Landau theory. It is found that, in an isotropic crystal, the magneto-elastic coupling energy counteracts the elasticity-driven intervortex interaction energy. Thus, the elastic response is induced entirely by individual vortices taken separately. Furthermore, the strain in a vortex-lattice cell decays quadratically with the distance from the vortex core, which allows a cutoff at the cell boundary. Finally, it could be concluded that if the jump in the elastic constant at Hc2 is comparable to unity, the elasticity energy dominates the competition between the vortex lattice and crystal elasticity. This effect likely results in the second magnetization peak in the reversible magnetization.
