Abstract:We evaluate asymptotically the smoothed first moment of central values of families of quadratic, cubic, quartic and sextic Hecke $L$-functions over various imaginary quadratic number fields of class number one, using the method of double Dirichlet series. In particular, we obtain asymptotic formulas for the quadratic families with error terms of size $O(X^{1/4+\varepsilon})$ under the generalized Riemann hypothesis.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the smooth cubic moments vanish for the Hecke--Maass cusp forms, which gives a new case of the random wave conjecture. In fact, we can prove a polynomial decay for the smooth cubic moments, while for the smooth second moment (i.e. QUE) no rate of decay is known unconditionally for general Hecke--Maass cusp forms. The proof bases on various estimates of moments of central $L$-values. We prove the Lindelöf on average bound for the first moment of $\rm GL(3)\times GL(2)$ $L$-functions in short intervals of the subconvexity strength length, and the convexity strength upper bound for the mixed moment of $\rm GL(2)$ and the triple product $L$-functions. In particular, we prove new subconvexity bounds of certain $\rm GL(3)\times GL(2)$ $L$-functions.

Non-vanishing for cubic Hecke $L$-functions

Abstract:We study the non-vanishing problem for the family of Hecke $L$-functions associated to primitive cubic characters defined over the Eisenstein quadratic number field $\mathbb{Q}(\omega)$. We prove unconditionally that a positive proportion of Hecke $L$-functions associated to the cubic residue symbols $\chi_q$ with $q \in \mathbb{Z}[\omega]$ squarefree and $q \equiv 1 \pmod{9}$ do not vanish at the central point. Our proof goes through the method of first and second mollified moments. The principal new contribution of this paper is the asymptotic evaluation of the mollified second moment with power saving error term. No asymptotic formula for the mollified second moment of a cubic family was previously known (even over function fields). Our new approach makes crucial use of Patterson's evaluation of the Fourier coefficients of the cubic metaplectic theta function, Heath-Brown's cubic large sieve, and a Lindelöf-on-average upper bound for the second moment of cubic Dirichlet series that we establish. The significance of our result is that the (unitary) family considered does not satisfy a perfectly orthogonal large sieve bound. This is quite unlike other families of Dirichlet $L$-functions in the literature for which unconditional results are known: the symplectic family of quadratic characters and the unitary family of all Dirichlet characters $\chi \pmod{q}$. Consequently, our proof has fundamentally different features from the corresponding works of Soundararajan and of Iwaniec and Sarnak.

Abstract:Let p and q be two distinct odd primes. Let K be an imaginary quadratic field over which p and q are both split. Let Ψ be a Hecke character over K of infinity type ( k , j ) with 0 ≤ − j < k . Under certain technical hypotheses, we show that for a Zariski dense set of finite-order characters κ over K which factor through the -extension of K , the p -adic valuation of the algebraic part of the L -value is a constant independent of κ . In addition, when j = 0 and certain technical hypothesis holds, this constant is zero.

Abstract:The paper uses Iwasawa theory at the prime p=2 to prove non‐vanishing theorems for the value at s=1 of the complex L ‐series of certain quadratic twists of the Gross family of elliptic curves with complex multiplication by the field K=Q(−q) , where q is any prime ≡7mod8 . Our results establish some broad generalizations of the non‐vanishing theorem first proven by Rohrlich using complex analytic methods. Such non‐vanishing theorems are important because it is known that they imply the finiteness of the Mordell–Weil group and the Tate–Shafarevich group of the corresponding elliptic curves over the Hilbert class field of K . It is essential for the proofs to study the Iwasawa theory of the higher dimensional abelian variety with complex multiplication which is obtained by taking the restriction of scalars to K of the particular elliptic curve with complex multiplication introduced by Gross.
