Abstract:Radziwill and Soundararajan unveiled a connection between low-lying zeros and central values of $L$-functions, which they instantiated in the case of quadratic twists of an elliptic curve. This paper addresses the case of the family of modular forms in the level aspect, and proves that the logarithms of central values of associated L-functions approximately distribute along a normal law with mean -(1/2)log log c(f) and variance log log c(f), where c(f) is the analytic conductor of f, as predicted by the Keating-Snaith conjecture.

Abstract:We evaluate asymptotically the smoothed first moment of central values of families of quadratic, cubic, quartic and sextic Hecke $L$-functions over various imaginary quadratic number fields of class number one, using the method of double Dirichlet series. In particular, we obtain asymptotic formulas for the quadratic families with error terms of size $O(X^{1/4+\varepsilon})$ under the generalized Riemann hypothesis.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the smooth cubic moments vanish for the Hecke--Maass cusp forms, which gives a new case of the random wave conjecture. In fact, we can prove a polynomial decay for the smooth cubic moments, while for the smooth second moment (i.e. QUE) no rate of decay is known unconditionally for general Hecke--Maass cusp forms. The proof bases on various estimates of moments of central $L$-values. We prove the Lindelöf on average bound for the first moment of $\rm GL(3)\times GL(2)$ $L$-functions in short intervals of the subconvexity strength length, and the convexity strength upper bound for the mixed moment of $\rm GL(2)$ and the triple product $L$-functions. In particular, we prove new subconvexity bounds of certain $\rm GL(3)\times GL(2)$ $L$-functions.

Abstract:Arising from the factorizations of the Dedekind zeta-functions of cubic fields, we obtain Artin L -functions of certain two-dimensional representations. In this paper, we study the value-distribution of such Artin L -functions for families of non-Galois cubic fields in conductor aspect. For this, we apply asymptotic formulas for the counting functions of cubic fields proved by Bhargava et al. (Invent Math 193 (2):439-499, 2013) or Taniguchi and Thorne (Duke Math J 162(13): 2451-2508, 2013). Then the Artin L -functions associated with cubic fields are connected with random variables called the random Euler products. We construct a density function for the random Euler product, whose Fourier–Laplace transform has an infinite product representation. Furthermore, we prove that various mean values of the Artin L -functions are represented by integrals involving this density function. By the class number formula, the result is applied to the study on the distribution of class numbers of cubic fields. We show a formula for the sum involving the class numbers which is regarded as a cubic analogue of Gauss' formula on quadratic class numbers.

Abstract:We give an asymptotic formula with power saving error term for the twisted first moment of symmetric square L-functions on GL(3) in the level aspect. As applications, we obtain non-vanishing results as well as lower bounds of the expected order of magnitude for all even moments, supporting the random matrix model for a unitary ensemble. Besides the GL(3) Kuznetsov formula, the ingredients include detailed local computations at ramified places, including root numbers and orthonormalization of oldforms and Eisenstein series.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a version of Deligne's conjecture for potentially automorphic motives, twisted by certain algebraic Hecke characters. The Hecke characters are chosen in such a way that we can use automorphic methods in the context of totally definite unitary groups.

Abstract:We establish an asymptotic formula for the first moment and derive an upper bound for the second moment of L-functions associated with the complete family of primitive cubic Dirichlet characters defined over the Eisenstein field. Our results are unconditional, and indicate that there are infinitely many characters within this family for which the L-function $L(s,\chi)$ does not vanish at the central point $s=1/2$.

Following ideas of Granville and Soundararajan for quadratic ‐functions, we model the distribution of by the distribution of random Euler products for certain family of random variables attached to each prime. We obtain a description of the proportion of that is larger or that is smaller than a given bound, and yield more light into the Littlewood bounds. Unlike the quadratic case, there is an asymmetry between lower and upper bounds for the cubic case, and small values are less probable than large values.

Abstract:We use the relative trace formula to obtain exact formulas for central values of certain twisted quadratic base change L-functions averaged over Hilbert modular forms of a fixed weight and level. We apply these formulas to the subconvexity problem for these L-functions. We also establish an equidistribution result for the Hecke eigenvalues weighted by these L-values.

Abstract:We establish a general principle that any lower bound on the non-vanishing of central $L$-values obtained through studying the one-level density of low-lying zeros can be refined to show that most such $L$-values have the typical size conjectured by Keating and Snaith. We illustrate this technique in the case of quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve, and similar results would hold for the many examples studied by Iwaniec, Luo, and Sarnak in their pioneering work on $1$-level densities.

Abstract:We make conjectures on the moments of the central values of the family of all elliptic curves and on the moments of the first derivative of the central values of a large family of positive rank curves. In both cases the order of magnitude is the same as that of the moments of the central values of an orthogonal family of L-functions. Notably, we predict that the critical values of all rank 1 elliptic curves is logarithmically larger than the rank 1 curves in the positive rank family. Furthermore, as arithmetical applications we make a conjecture on the distribution of a_p's amongst all rank 2 elliptic curves, and also show how the Riemann hypothesis can be deduced from sufficient knowledge of the first moment of the positive rank family (based on an idea of Iwaniec).

Abstract:We study the non-vanishing problem for the family of Hecke $L$-functions associated to primitive cubic characters defined over the Eisenstein quadratic number field $\mathbb{Q}(\omega)$. We prove unconditionally that a positive proportion of Hecke $L$-functions associated to the cubic residue symbols $\chi_q$ with $q \in \mathbb{Z}[\omega]$ squarefree and $q \equiv 1 \pmod{9}$ do not vanish at the central point. Our proof goes through the method of first and second mollified moments. The principal new contribution of this paper is the asymptotic evaluation of the mollified second moment with power saving error term. No asymptotic formula for the mollified second moment of a cubic family was previously known (even over function fields). Our new approach makes crucial use of Patterson's evaluation of the Fourier coefficients of the cubic metaplectic theta function, Heath-Brown's cubic large sieve, and a Lindelöf-on-average upper bound for the second moment of cubic Dirichlet series that we establish. The significance of our result is that the (unitary) family considered does not satisfy a perfectly orthogonal large sieve bound. This is quite unlike other families of Dirichlet $L$-functions in the literature for which unconditional results are known: the symplectic family of quadratic characters and the unitary family of all Dirichlet characters $\chi \pmod{q}$. Consequently, our proof has fundamentally different features from the corresponding works of Soundararajan and of Iwaniec and Sarnak.

Abstract:In 1970, Huxley obtained a sharp upper bound for the sixth moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions at the central point, averaged over primitive characters $\chi$ modulo $q$ and all moduli $q \leq Q$. In 2007, as an application of their ``asymptotic large sieve'', Conrey, Iwaniec and Soundararajan showed that when an additional short $t$-averaging is introduced into the problem, an asymptotic can be obtained. In this paper we show that this extraneous averaging can be removed, and we thus obtain an asymptotic for the original moment problem considered by Huxley. The main new difficulty in our work is the appearance of certain challenging ``unbalanced'' sums that arise as soon as the $t$-aspect averaging is removed.

Abstract:In this article, we study the density conjecture of Katz and Sarnak for $L$-functions of adélic Hilbert modular forms and their convolutions. In particular, under the generalised Riemann hypothesis, we establish several instances supporting the conjecture and extending the works of Iwaniec-Luo-Sarnak and many others. For applications, we obtain an upper bound for the average order of $L$-functions of Hilbert modular forms at $s=\frac{1}{2}$ as well as a positive proportion of non-vanishing of certain Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions.
