Abstract:Binder-free electrodes provide great opportunities for the development of high-performance energy devices due to the absence of insulating and inactive binders. In this paper, NiCo2S4 arrays with attractive nanostructures were directly grown on activated carbon textile (ACT) by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method to develop a self-supported binder-free electrode. The nanostructures can be tuned from nanorods to nanosheets by simply controlling the concentration of the sulfur source. Both arrays exhibited battery-type behavior of the positive electrode, where the nanosheets arrays with relatively higher capacity of 183.2 mA h g(-1) at 2 mA cm(-2) and better cycling stability of 82.6 % capacitance retention after 1000 cycles was employed in an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) as positive electrode. The ASC exhibited excellent rate capability with the maximum specific energy of 56.2 Wh/kg and the specific power of 632.7 W/kg at the current density of 4 mA/cm(2). The presented results are believed to be helpful to the design and application of promising flexible binder-free electrode for high-performance hybrid supercapacitors.
Monocrystalline FeMnO3 on Carbon Cloth for Extremely High-Areal-Capacitance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors with extremely high areal capacitances are of great significance in wearable electronics. Here, we report fast fabrication of high mass loading monocrystalline FeMnO3 on highly conductive carbon cloth (CC) textiles within just 1 min through a molten salt route. The heavily loaded (10.7 mg cm(-2)), binder-free FeMnO3@CC electrode exhibits a preeminent highest areal capacitance of 11.02 F cm(-2) when working as a negative electrode at 2 mV s(-1), thanks to the monocrystalline characteristic and the activated carbon substrate. Because of the multivalence change, it is appropriately applied as electrodes in a symmetric supercapacitor, which operates at an extremely high potential (1.6 V) and achieves outstanding areal performance (capacitance of 3.6 F cm(-2) at 10 mA cm(-2), energy density of 1.28 mWh cm(-2) at 8.12 mW cm(-2)) as well as excellent gravimetric and volumetric properties. We also record an outstanding cycling stability at 10 mA cm(-2), which is 91% of the first areal capacitance maintained after 20 000 cycles. This study reveals an encouraging application prospect when considering the low-cost, fast-fabrication of supercapacitor electrodes exhibiting merits of high mass loading, hierarchical structure, boosted conductivity, and structural stability.
Control of Nano Grains and Wide Carbocyclic Layer Space of Forming Active Carbon with Extraordinary Capacitance Characteristics in Supercapacitors

Abstract:Improving the properties of activated carbon (AC) electrodes for enhancing the electrochemical performance of commercial supercapacitors is still a great challenge. In this work, a coconut shell carbonized raw material is used to successfully manufacture AC by the traditional steam activation method followed by further calcination in CO2. Results showed that a skeleton mesh wall was formed in AC, the thickness of the mesh wall was around 1.5 nm, and the crystalline phase of grain size of 1.13 nm was controlled to form independently in the wall of AC after calcination in CO2 for 4 h. The carbocyclic layer space of the grain phase ranges from 0.381 to 0.392 nm in AC, which is 17% wider than that of 0.335 nm of graphite. The AC shows a high specific surface area (1782 m(2)/g), and the supercapacitor prepared by AC shows a high specific capacitance (112.5 F.g(-1) at 0.1 A.g(-1)), a high capacitance retention rate (retains 89.06% after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles), a high rate performance (specific capacitance going down from 111.2 to 65.1 F.g(-1) under current density from 0.1 to 10 A.g(-1)), low internal resistance, and a power and energy capacity (energy density, 28.83 W h.kg(-1); power density, 9.89 kW.kg(-1)). It is worth comparing with the typical commercial YP-50 of Kuraray, Japan.
Facile Activation of Commercial Carbon Felt As a Low-Cost Free-Standing Electrode for Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:High cost, low capacitance, and complicated synthesis process are still the key limitations for carbon-negative materials to meet their industrial production and application in high-energy-density asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs). In this work, we demonstrate the facile preparation of ultrahigh-surface-area free-standing carbon material from low-cost industrial carbon felt (CF) and its application for flexible supercapacitor electrode with outstanding performance. Through a simple freeze-drying-assisted activation method, the as-prepared activated CF (ACF) was endowed with satisfactory flexibility, ultrahigh specific surface area of 2109 m(2) g(-1), good electric conductivity (311 S m(-1)), and excellent wettability to aqueous electrolyte. Owing to these merits, the ACF expressed an ultrahigh areal capacitance of 1441 mF cm(-2), a high specific capacitance (C-s) of 280 F g(-1) based on the mass of the whole electrode, and an impressive cycling stability (87% retention after 5000 cycles). When applied as a flexible freestanding electrode for MnO2//ACF ASCs, the ACF-based device provided satisfactory areal energy densities of 0.283 and 0.104 mWh cm(-2) in aqueous and quasi-solid electrolytes, respectively. The values outperform many previously reported carbon based electrochemical devices. The low cost of raw material and the facile fabrication process, together with the high electrochemical performance, make our ACF electrode highly applicable for the mass production of flexible energy-storage devices.
Boosting Supercapacitive Performance of Flexible Carbon Via Surface Engineering.

Abstract:The relatively low specific capacitance of flexible carbons hinders their practical application for fabricating high-performance flexible supercapacitors. In this work, a surface engineering method is proposed to boost the supercapacitive performance of the flexible carbon. In this method, a flexible carbon was fabricated from carbon felt via co-activation with potassium argininate and potassium hydroxide (KOH) as activators, and the resulting material is abbreviated as AKCF. Unlike traditional KOH activation processes, the addition of potassium argininate can produce a micro-graphitized carbon layer to be the outer layer of AKCF fibers for achieving better electronic transfer. Due to the improved conductivity and lower charge transfer resistance endowed by a thin micro-graphitized carbon layer, the capacitance of the AKCF-0.1 (0.1 M arginine was used) electrode obtained by the co-activation process is elevated to a 1.8-fold higher value of 403 C.g(-1) (2583 mC.cmz) relative to the AKCF-0 (0 M arginine was used) electrode prepared by KOH activation alone (222 C.g(-1) or 1369 mC.cmz). Moreover, this AKCF-0.1 electrode also displays satisfactory rate capability (66% capacitance retention after a 20-fold current increase) and highly stable cycling performance (no capacitance decline after 20,000 cycles). In addition, the asymmetric supercapacitors constructed with this AKCF-0.1 electrode as the flexible negative electrode expresses high energy densities of 68.4 Wh.kg(-1) and 0.139 mWh.cm(-2) in aqueous and gel electrolytes, respectively. Abstract:Commercial carbon fiber (T300) cloth as the original material is surface-treated by a two-step approach, lastly becoming a high-performance electrode. This kind of electrode has a high specific capacitance (42.2 F g−1), which is nearly a hundred times that of the original carbon cloth. After fabricating these electrodes into a symmetric supercapacitor device, it provides a high specific energy of 4.64 W h kg−1 at a specific power of 10 W kg−1. Furthermore, the device showed long cycling stability (it keeps 92% capacitance retention after 1000 cycles), good rate capability, and low internal resistance. This work is expected to provide guidance for the research of structural supercapacitors based on commercial carbon cloth.

Abstract:Carbon cloth (CC), a promising current collector with low weight and excellent robust mechanical property, has attracted increasing attention as the anode for supercapacitors recently. In this study, we show a novel two-prong strategy to remarkably enhance its capacitance via electrochemical activation and polypyrrole (PPy) deposition. The facile activation process created more active sites and induced oxygen-containing groups while the PPy layer provided extra capacitance contribution. Such strategy significantly boosted the capacitive property: The obtained PPy/ACC exhibited a high specific capacitance of ∼3.184 F cm−2 which is about 2.75 times the original CC within the potential window of −1.0–0 V in 1 M KOH electrolyte. A symmetric supercapacitor with the PPy/ACC as both the cathode and anode showed a high stable working voltage up to 1.8 V and a maximum energy density of 3.62 mWh cm−3 at 1.4 V. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor employing it and Ni–Bi–S/Ni delivered an even higher energy density of 5.81 mWh cm−3.

Abstract:Activated commercial carbon cloth (ACC) was prepared by a facile hydrothermal process using a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide as the solvent. Microcracks, mesopores, and oxygen-containing functional groups were formed on the surface of ACC, which significantly enhanced the electrochemical properties for ACC. The ACC showed the high areal-specific capacitance, good rate capability, and excellent cycling stability in the three-electrode system. And the ACC exhibited satisfactory charging–discharging. Furthermore, the symmetric supercapacitor based on the ACC exhibited an areal-specific capacitance of 549.3 mF/cm2 and achieved an energy density of 1.29 mWh/cm3 at a power density of 533.02 mW/cm3 and a high power density of 618.16 mW/cm3 at an energy density of 0.61 mWh/cm3, respectively. Moreover, the outstanding capacitive performance reveals that ACC could be considered as a competitive potential candidate as an electrode for supercapacitor.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors with aqueous electrolytes are attractive safe power sources; yet low specific capacitance and narrow operating voltage hinder their practical applications. Herein, we deposit arrays of TiO2 nanowires (TiO2@CC) and MnO2 nanosheets (MnO2@CC) on carbon cloth via a solution-based technique at 80 degrees C and in an open atmosphere. The TiO2 nanowires possess intrinsic low hydrogen evolution reaction activities and in turn a wide working window (-1.6-0 V vs. Hg/HgO). The high specific surface area and favorable pore texture endow the TiO2@CC and the MnO2@CC with high areal specific capacitances of 1204.8 mF cm(-2) and 1427.2 mF cm(-2), respectively. A 2.6 V wide potential window aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor is then constructed, which exhibits an exceptional high specific capacitance of 1010.8 mF cm(-2), high volumetric energy density of 4.75 mW h cm(-3) and volumetric power density of 325 mW cm(-3). The areal energy density and areal power density are 0.949 mW h cm(-2) and 65 mW cm(-2), respectively. The excellent cyclic stability of 100% capacity retention after 50,000 cycles at a high current density of 5 mA cm(-2) is recorded and the supercapacitor also exhibits good flexibility.

Abstract:Most advances towards flexible supercapacitors (SCs) have been focused on porous carbon materials. However, the poor flexibility and low areal capacitance impede their industrial application. While carbon cloth is generally regarded as improper electrode material due to its poor electrochemical performance, here, we demonstrate the capacitance of carbon cloth can be boosted to three orders of magnitude higher (2900mFcm-2) with a simple high-temperature annealing process. The improvement stems from ultramicropores effects in the range of 0.46–0.64nm besides superhydrophilicity and high specific surface area. Remarkably, direct implementation for flexible solid-state SCs (SSCs) provides areal capacitance and energy density for the stack of 920mFcm-2 and 128μWhcm-2, respectively. In addition, these devices are bendable, durable and easy to be any dimensions, hence, holding great promise for large-scale production of flexible electronics.
Flexible carbon cloth supercapacitors with high power and energy densities

Abstract:Commercially available carbon cloths (CCs) are promising candidates to construct flexible and wearable electronics. In this work, post‐treated CCs are employed to construct flexible supercapacitors (SCs). CCs are firstly activated in KOH solution and subsequent thermally annealed, resulting in their unique porous microstructure and a wide potential window up to 2.2 V. Using these binder‐ and current‐collector‐ free CCs as the capacitor electrodes, a high‐performance and flexible electrical double layer capacitor is constructed. In 1 M KOH aqueous solution, its specific capacitance of as high as 1967.0 mF cm‐2 is obtained at a current density of 30 mA cm‐2. Moreover, it exhibits excellent capacitance retention and delivers both high energy density (e.g., 93.38 W h kg‐1 at a power density of 3 890 W kg‐1) and high power density (e.g., 12 850 W kg‐1 at an energy density of 12 W h kg‐1). Abstract:The 3D interconnected architecture nanowires of Co3O4 partially substituted by Cu(I)/Cu(II) coated on the carbon cloth (CCO@CC) with high specific surface area were fabricated by a facile and low-cost hydrothermal approach and consequent thermal annealing. The prepared binder-free CCO@CC electrode exhibits high specific capacitance (1947.2 F g(-1) or 973.6 C g(-1) at 1 A g(-1)) and superior cyclic stability (93.76% retention of initial value up to 10,000 cycles). In addition, the CCO@CC and synthesized Fe2O3@CC are used as positive and negative electrodes in the presence of PVA-KOH as a gel electrolyte to assemble a flexible solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor. The as-assembled flexible device shows a high specific capacitance of 182.7 F g(-1), high energy density of 57.1 W h kg(-1) at the power density of 749.75 W kg(-1), remarkable cyclic stability with 93.25% retention after 10,000 cycles and almost no capacity loss under different bending angles. Therefore, this material has potential application for wearable electronics with the excellent mechanical flexibility.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors are promising energy storage devices in wearable smart electronics. Exploring cost-efficient electrodes with high capacitance would promote the wide-scale application of such capacitors. Herein, in order to explore a methodology for preparing low cost, flexible, tough, and up-scalable supercapacitor electrodes, silk textile is directly carbonized to make a conductive free-standing textile substrate. Through mildly baking the surfactant-free Ti3C2Tx flakes suspension loaded on the carbonized silk cloth, a uniform and adhesive coating consisting of nanometer-thick Ti3C2Tx flakes is well established on the conductive fabric support, forming a MXene-coated flexible textile electrode. The fabricated electrode exhibits a high areal capacitance of 362 mF/cm2 with excellent cyclability and flexibility. Moreover, capacitance changes neglegibly under the bending deformation mode. This study elucidates the feasibility of using silk-derived carbon cloth from biomss for MXene-based flexible supercapacitor.
Activated‐carbon‐based supercapacitors with high gravimetric‐ and volumetric capacitance at commercial‐level mass loading

Abstract:Activated carbons (ACs) are derived from cornhusk via a simple technique route consisting of a hydrothermal carbonization and a following KOH activation, with porous structures and morphology of the ACs controlled by adjusting the amount of KOH for the activation. As the main active materials of the electrode for supercapacitors (SCs), both the porosity and morphology exhibit significant influence in the compaction density of the electrode. The ACs activated with a KOH/biochar ratio of 3:1 not only provide high surface area of 3024 m2/g but also guarantee high compaction density of 11.6 mg/cm2 for a 200 μm‐thick electrode, leading to high‐performances for both gravimetric and volumetric capacitance. Moreover, the morphology of thin‐sheet‐like interconnected network benefits the densely‐compact of the ACs in electrode. In the concern of practical application, the effect of electrode thickness on the electrochemical performances are examined to optimize the electrode with commercial‐level mass loading with organic electrolyte, which is of ∽344 F/g in gravimetric capacitance and 210 F/cm3 in volumetric capacitance as well as excellent capacitance retention over 90% after 5000 galvanostatic charge‐discharge cycles. In addition, good electrochemical performances of the optimized electrode with commercial‐level mass loading maintains over a broad range of work temperature. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Activated carbon cloth, due to its excellent flexibility, good conductivity, and high surface area, is featured as a kind of promising material for energy storage devices. However, the non-optimized pore structures limit its application as electrode material in supercapacitors with organic electrolytes, which can provide both high energy density and power density due to the high applied cell voltage. In this paper, nitrogen-doped activated carbon cloth with hollow tubular fiber units, high surface area, controllable hierarchical porous structure, and beneficial surface functional groups, is synthesized via a simple ammonia treatment of commercial cotton fabrics. The resulting organic-electrolyte supercapacitors based on this hierarchical porous hollow carbon cloth exhibit a high specific capacitance (up to 215.9 F g−1 at 1 A g−1), extremely high rate capability (89% from 1 A g−1 to 200 A g−1), small IR drop (0.23 V at 100 A g−1), outstanding cycling stability (98% capacitance retention over 20 000 cycles), as well as good flexibility. This N-doped activated carbon cloth thus overcomes the drawbacks of presently available carbon cloths and opens up a new horizon toward energy storage devices with high energy density at high power density.

Abstract:An effective method has been explored to improve the capacitive property of carbon-based materials by carbonizing the polypyrrole electrodeposited on the porous carbon cloth (PCC). The porous carbon cloth coated with N-doped mesoporous carbon (PCC@NMC) demonstrated a high specific capacitance of 33.45 F cm(-3) at 4 mA cm(-2) in 1 M Na2SO4 solution and showed excellent cycling stability by running 40,000 charge/discharge cycles without degradation at 16 mA cm(-2). We also assemble PCC@NMC//MnO2/N-doped mesoporous carbon on porous carbon cloth (PCC@MNMC) as a flexible asymmetrical supercapacitor (ASC), which exhibits a high energy density of 4.51 mWh cm(-3) at 333.3 mW cm(-3) in a voltage range of 0-2 V and can power 32 light-emitting diodes for 10 min. This type of supercapacitors based on commercial carbon cloth may open the way for applications in wearable electronic storage.

Abstract:In this work, the surface of carbon cloth is treated by plasma jet to improve its hydrophilicity. The symmetrical carbon cloth-based supercapacitor is assembled with the carbon cloth treated by plasma as the active electrodes and sodium chloride solution as the electrolyte. With the discharge time (1 min, 2 min, 3 min) and working gas types (argon, air, helium) of plasma as variables, the effects of different plasma on the hydrophilicity of carbon cloth are observed, and the changes of the electrochemical properties of the supercapacitors with single or double carbon cloth electrodes treated by different plasma are studied. The contact angle test results show that the plasma of different working gases can weaken the hydrophobicity of carbon cloth, and the helium plasma can make the carbon cloth change from hydrophobicity to hydrophilicity. The electric capacity calculated by cyclic voltammetry shows that plasma can increase the electric capacity of carbon cloth-based supercapacitors. The electric capacity of carbon cloth-based supercapacitors with two carbon cloth electrodes treated by plasma is larger than that of single carbon cloth electrode treated by plasma. The argon and helium plasma with longer discharge time can significantly improve the electric capacity of carbon cloth-based supercapacitors. The galvanostatic charge-discharge curve shows that different working gases of plasma can make carbon cloth-based supercapacitors obtain pseudocapacitance, increase the charge-discharge time and electric capacity. From the AC impedance spectrum, it can be concluded that the plasma of any kind of working gas can reduce the impedance and charge transfer resistance of the carbon cloth-based supercapacitor. The longer plasma discharge time lead to the smaller impedance, and the impedance of the supercapacitor with both carbon cloth electrodes treated by plasma is smaller.

Abstract:All‐solid‐state flexible supercapacitors (FSCs) are promising energy‐storage devices in wearable smart electronics. Carbon cloth (CC) has emerged as an ideal candidate as it can fulfill all the required properties for conductive, corrosion‐resistant, and lightweight FSC substrates. However, commercial CC is difficult to adhere to without crosslinkers and binders owing to the hydrophobic surface. Herein, oxygen plasma and chemistry methods are selected for hydrophilic modification of commercial CC. Then, Ti3C2Tx flakes are coated on the surface of modified CC as active materials. These modified morphologies were characterized by scanning electron microscope and mechanical properties were investigated by a fabric tensile tester. The electrochemical properties of the MXene‐based electrodes by two modification methods were compared. Chemistry modification CC/Ti3C2Tx electrode exhibits an areal capacitance of 513 mF cm−2, which is 88% higher than that of oxygen plasma‐modified CC/MXene electrode, and capacitance retention remains above 92% after 10 000 cycles. This work proposes a feasible strategy, offering a platform for rational designs of flexible electronics based on textiles, as well as employing a large family of MXenes and their heterostructures.

Abstract:All High-performance flexible electrochemical energy storage devices such as supercapacitors (SCs) and lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are highly desirable as a result of the ever-increasing demands for stretchable electronics. In this work, an effective two-step strategy contain surface and structural modulation and hydrothermal method is developed to grow cooper sulfides onto a highly active surface with pores and numerous functional oxygenic groups. Arising from rough surface and increased active sites, the as-prepared activated loosen cooper sulfides coated electrochemical modified carbon cloths (CuS@ECC) electrode not only achieves a large capacitance (410 F cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2) and fast kinetics but also shows excellent cycling durability (maintain 95% initial capacitance after 3000 cycles). This dual modification strategy may throw light on the rational design of new generation advanced composited electrodes for high-performance flexible supercapacitors.
