Abstract:The spacer layer is a key component of fully printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells, but its precise characteristics are far from being understood in relation to the device design. In the present work, we perform a detailed systematic study on the effects of spacer parameters, such as size of building blocks, layer thickness, etc., on properties of the perovskite filler, insulating ability and performance of fully printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells by combining the techniques of time-resolved photoluminescence, high-resolution TEM, insulating resistance measurements, impedance spectroscopy and J-V characteristics. Drawing on the deep understanding from these studies, we formulate key principles, which are anticipated to guide the design of the advanced spacer layer for fully printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells.
Improving Hole‐Conductor‐Free Fully Printable Mesoscopic Perovskite Solar Cells’ Performance with Enhanced Open‐Circuit Voltage via the Octyltrimethylammonium Chloride Additive

Abstract:Hole‐conductor‐free fully printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (MPSCs) based on mp‐TiO 2 /mp‐ZrO 2 /carbon triple mesoscopic layers are competitive candidates among various rapidly developed PSCs for future photovoltaic applications due to the characteristics of low‐cost, easy upscaling, and superior stability. However, the open‐circuit voltage ( V OC ) loss in printable MPSCs is relatively large compared to that in conventional PSCs, deteriorating the power conversion efficiency (PCE). Herein, the V OC loss is reduced by the octyltrimethylammonium chloride (OTAC) additive. OTAC is found to upshift the Fermi level of TiO 2 and passivate trap states in bulk MAPbI 3 perovskite, thus optimizing the energy‐level alignment of the TiO 2 /perovskite heterojunction and suppressing nonradiative recombination in devices. As a result, MPSCs deliver the highest PCE of 16.53% with an improved V OC of 1007 mV. The work demonstrates a facile strategy to reduce the V OC loss in printable MPSCs by simultaneously optimizing the energy‐level alignment and suppressing nonradiative recombination.

Abstract:In this work, 4,4′‐ (Hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) is used as the additive in printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells. This fluorinated molecule improves the perovskite crystallinity, passivates perovskite defects, and enhances long‐term operation stability. Under these synergistic effects, the device has an average VOC increase over 50 mV and the champion device has a PCE of 20.15%. Benefiting from their simple and cost‐effective fabrication procedures, printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (p‐MPSCs) exhibit substantial potential for large‐scale production. In p‐MPSCs, the thickness of the perovskite filled in the TiO2 and ZrO2 mesoporous layers is ≈3 μm. Therefore, the perovskite crystallization process is more intricate and challenging in the mesoporous structure than the general planar thin film (0.3–0.5 μm). In this work, a multifunctional fluorinated molecule is applied to work as an additive to improve the perovskite crystallization, enhance the device efficiency, and elevate the operational stability. This additive forms robust coordination between its carbonyl groups and uncoordinated Pb2+, thereby effectively passivating defects. The hydrophobic properties of the fluorinated molecule contribute to the device's water‐resistant capability and long‐term operational stability. With these synergistic effects, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of small‐area cells (0.1 cm2) reaches 20.15% under 1 sun illumination. Large‐area modules (56.4 cm2) are fabricated and exhibit a PCE of 15.41%.

Abstract:Homogeneity and stability of flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are significant for the commercial feasibility in upscaling fabrication. Concretely, the mismatching between bottom interface and perovskite precursor ink can cause uncontrollable crystallization and undesired dangling bonds during the printing process. Herein, methylammonium acetate, serving as ink assistant (IAS) can effectively avoid the micron-scale defects of perovskite film. The in situ optical microscope is applied to prove the IAS can inhibit the colloidal aggregation and induce more adequate crystallization growth, thus avoiding the micron-scale defects of pinholes and intergranular cracking. Concurrently, 4-chlorobenzenesulfonic acid is introduced into the electrode surface as a passivation layer to restore the deep traps at perovskite interface in nano-scale. Finally, the target flexible devices (1.01 cm2) deliver a superior efficiency of 18.12% with improved air atmosphere stability. This multi-scale defect repair strategy provides an integrated design concept of homogeneity and stability for scalable and flexible PSCs.

Abstract:The solution processing of polycrystalline perovskite films introduces trap states that can adversely affect their optoelectronic properties. Motivated by the use of small-molecule surfactants to improve the optoelectronic performance of perovskites, we demonstrate the use of polymers with coordinating groups to improve the performance of solution-processed semiconductor films. The use of these polymer modifiers results in a marked change in the electronic properties of the films, as measured by both carrier dynamics and overall device performance. The devices grown with the polymer poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP) show significantly enhanced power conversion efficiency from 16.9 ± 0.7% to 18.8 ± 0.8% (champion efficiency, 20.2%) from a reverse scan and stabilized champion efficiency from 17.5 to 19.1% [under a bias of 0.94 V and AM (air mass) 1.5-G, 1-sun illumination over 30 min] compared to controls without any passivation. Treating the perovskite film with PVP enables a VOC of up to 1.16 V, which is among the best reported for a CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cell and one of the lowest voltage deficits reported for any perovskite to date. In addition, perovskite solar cells treated with PVP show a long shelf lifetime of up to 90 days (retaining 85% of the initial efficiency) and increased by a factor of more than 20 compared to those without any polymer (degrading to 85% after ~4 days). Our work opens up a new class of chemical additives for improving perovskite performance and should pave the way toward improving perovskite solar cells for high efficiency and stability.

Abstract:Surface defects, which mediate nonradiative recombination, are detrimental to both the photovoltaic performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Improving photovoltage and fill factor (FF) in screen‐printed mesoporous PSCs is a major challenge for approaching the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the planar configured devices. Herein, a novel bifacial passivation strategy which simultaneously suppresses deep trap states within TiO 2 and perovskite through interaction between functional groups and defects is demonstrated for fully printable mesoscopic PSCs. The application of monoethanolamine (MEA) treatment to TiO 2 surface not only reduces the energy barrier between TiO 2 and perovskite for accelerating the charge transfer but also passivates the uncoordinated Pb defects on the perovskite interface. Due to the synergistic effect of charge extraction promotion and trap passivation, the fabricated PSCs deliver a champion PCE of 15.5% with an enhanced V oc of 0.94 V and FF of 70.4% compared with PSCs without MEA passivation, and the device maintains 97% of its topmost PCE after 240 h under constant simulated solar illumination in air atmosphere. This investigation helps exploit new approaches for defect passivation to further improve both the efficiency and stability of printable mesoscopic PSCs.

Abstract:The multiple quantum wells (QWs) distribution in low-dimensional perovskite films hinders charge transport due to the fundamental difficulty of controlling crystal growth from precursor solutions, yielding poorly homogeneous low-dimensional perovskite solar cells (PSCs), especially in upscaling fabrication. Here, efficient low-dimensional PSCs are realized by modulating the colloidal assembly behavior in the precursor solution to induce intermediate structures. In combination with in situ liquid time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, the assembly behavior of organic cations involved lead iodide-dominated colloidal soft framework is visualized by investigating the precursor species differences under hydrogen bonding interactions. Subsequently, solid-state reactions emerge and the formamidine (FA)-based perovskite films exhibit significantly suppressed multiple QWs distribution. Encouragingly, the FA device (n=9, by meniscus-assisted coating) achieves a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.28 % for a size of 0.04 cm2 and a PCE of 15.35 % for a mini-module of 16.94 cm2 with superior stability.

Abstract:In this study, polysuccinimide is used as the additive in printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells. It improves the perovskite crystallinity and its carbonyl groups strongly coordinate with Pb2+, which can effectively passivate defects. As a result, the device has an average VOC increases over 40Â mV and the champion device has a PCE of 18.84% Due to the low cost and excellent potential for mass production, printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (pâ€�MPSCs) have drawn a lot of attention among other device structures. However, the low openâ€�circuit voltage (VOC) of such devices restricts their power conversion efficiency (PCE). This limitation is brought by the high defect density at perovskite grain boundaries in the mesoporous scaffold, which results in severe nonradiative recombination and is detrimental to the VOC. To improve the perovskite crystallization process, passivate the perovskite defects, and enhance the PCE, additive engineering is an effective way. Herein, a polymeric Lewis base polysuccinimide (PSI) is added to the perovskite precursor solution as an additive. It improves the perovskite crystallinity and its carbonyl groups strongly coordinate with Pb2+, which can effectively passivate defects. Additionally, compared with its monomer, succinimide (SI), PSI serves as a better defect passivator because the longâ€�chained macromolecule can be firmly anchored on those defect sites and form a stronger interaction with perovskite grains. As a result, the champion device has a PCE of 18.84%, and the VOC rises from 973 to 1030Â mV. This studyÂ offers a new strategy for fabricating efficient pâ€�MPSCs.

Abstract:Recent advancements in printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (p‐MPSCs) face challenges in improving perovskite precursor solution diffusion during assembly. The research achieves effective gap‐driven diffusion, forming well‐filled perovskite through TiO2 nanorod arrays. The bilayer electron transport layer with dual crystal phase and cascaded energy levels demonstrates superior electron collection and directional transport. Suppression of nonradiative recombination and efficient charge transfer lead to notable enhancements in open‐circuit voltage and short‐circuit current density. Consequently, p‐MPSCs' power conversion efficiency increases from 14.32% to 16.07%, close to literature's highest reported value of 16.21%. These results highlight a novel interface engineering approach for high‐performance p‐MPSCs fabrication. Recently, enhancing the photovoltaic performance of printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (p‐MPSCs) poses a significant challenge, particularly in improving the diffusion of perovskite precursor solutions during device assembly. In this research, effective gap‐driven diffusion of the precursor solution perovskite is successfully achieved, leading to the formation of well‐filled and crystallized perovskite through TiO2 nanorod arrays. By incorporating upper‐layer TiO2 nanoparticles, a bilayer electron transport layer with dual crystal phase is developed, establishing a cascaded energy level structure that exhibits superior capabilities in electron collection and directional transport. The effective suppression of nonradiative recombination and efficient charge transfer result in notable enhancements in both open‐circuit voltage and short‐circuit current density. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency of p‐MPSCs devices based on MAPbI3 γ‐butyrolactone solution increases from 14.32% to 16.07% (highest reported value in the literature is 16.21%). These findings highlight a novel interface engineering approach for the fabrication of high‐performance p‐MPSCs devices.

Abstract:The hole‐conductor‐free printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells based on the inorganic scaffolds of mesoporous titania, mesoporous zirconia, and porous carbon have attracted much attention due to their excellent stability and low manufacturing cost. However, in such hole‐conductor‐free devices, the transport of the photogenerated holes is dominated by the diffusion‐assisted charge carrier movement, while the driving force is insufficient. Reinforcing the built‐in electric field (BEF) is an effective strategy to promote oriented carrier transport. Herein, by using an optimized two‐step deposition method, the BEF is reinforced by creating a work function difference of perovskite (Δµ) in different layers via a gradient self‐doping. The enhanced BEF improves the hole transport and extraction, and significantly reduces the carrier recombination losses in the device. As a result, an average open‐circuit voltage improvement over 60 mV and a power conversion efficiency of 17.68% are achieved without any additives or complex processes. This strategy provides a new approach toward fabricating highly efficient printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells with reduced carrier recombination losses. Gradient self‐doping within the micron scale is established based on an optimized two‐step method in printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells. The difference in the work function of the perovskite enhances the built‐in electric field, thus promoting the transport and extraction of photogenerated holes. Reduced carrier recombination losses deliver an average VOC improvement over 60 mV and a power conversion efficiency of 17.68%.

Abstract:The unbalanced diffusion lengths of photogenerated electrons and holes in formamidine (FA)‐based perovskite materials facilitate the charge recombination. Here, ordered SnO2 micro‐nanoarrays are constructed by a bubble‐assisted printing method and serve as "speedway" for electron transport in perovskite photovoltaics. Perovskite layers embedded with SnO2 arrays result in reduced charge recombination and improved power conversion efficiency in perovskite solar cells. Organic–inorganic halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted significant attention in photovoltaic research, owing to their superior optoelectronic properties and cost‐effective manufacturing techniques. However, the unbalanced charge carrier diffusion length in perovskite materials leads to the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. The inefficient charge carrier collecting process severely affects the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the PSCs. Herein, a solution‐processed SnO2 array electron transport layer with precisely tunable micro‐nanostructures is fabricated via a bubble‐template‐assisted approach, serving as both electron transport layers and scaffolds for the perovskite layer. Due to the optimized electron transporting pathway and enlarged perovskite grain size, the PSCs achieve a PCE of 25.35% (25.07% certificated PCE).

Abstract:Polyacrylonitrile improves perovskite crystalline quality and passivates defects by establishing hydrogen and coordination bonds with halide perovskite via its C≡N group. As a result of the addition of polyacrylonitrile, the power conversion efficiency of the printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells increased from 16.80% to 18.33%. The low cost and scalability advantages of printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (p‐MPSCs) are impaired by the issue of limited power conversion efficiency (PCE). Herein, the PCE of p‐MPSCs is improved by introducing the polymer additive polyacrylonitrile (PAN) into the formamidinium (FA)‐based perovskite for crystallization and defect modulation. PAN forms hydrogen bond and coordination bond with halide perovskite through its C≡N group. Such interactions improve the crystallization and filling of FA‐based perovskite in the mesoscopic scaffold and bring a long carrier lifetime by passivating defects. The synergy improves the PCE of p‐MPSCs from 16.80% to 18.33%. Meanwhile, the hydrophobic nature of PAN enhances the device's resistance against moisture. This work demonstrates that the polymer additive is a promising choice for breaking the PCE limit of p‐MPSCs.

Abstract:The boosting efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has evoked the interest in applying them in tandem structures, especially perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells. However, the tandem solar cells still face concerns about stability, upscaling, and cost‐effectiveness on the path to commercialization. Herein, an innovative tandem architecture based on the printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells is proposed. By investigating the effects of indium tin oxide (ITO) particle size, annealing temperature, and dispersant on the performance of ITO mesoporous films, screen‐printable mesoscopic ITO electrode with an electron mobility of 7.5 cm2 V−1 s−1 and an average visible transmittance of over 80% is successfully obtained. The screen‐printed mesoporous titania, zirconia, and ITO are used as a scaffold and a semitransparent PSC with a champion power conversion efficiency of 9.38% is fabricated infiltrated with perovskites. Further, a perovskite/silicon tandem device which can remain stable for >720 h is demonstrated, highlighting the potential of screen‐printed inorganic scaffold structure in tandem photovoltaic technique.

Abstract:Printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (p-MPSCs) have received extensive attention from researchers and entrepreneurs worldwide because of their low cost, simple manufacturing process, and feasible fabricate in air. However, the wide application of p-MPSCs is limited by their relatively low power conversion efficiency (PCE). Herein, we propose a performance enhancement strategy for p-MPSCs by introducing 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BZMIMCl) ionic liquid into a perovskite precursor. The BZMIMCl ionic liquid optimized the crystallization of perovskite films, modulated the energy band alignment of the perovskite, and improved carrier transport, thereby enhancing the overall photovoltaic parameters and stability of p-MPSCs. The champion PCE of the BZMIMCl-optimized device was 16.06%. Moreover, the unencapsulated p-MPSCs containing BZMIMCl maintained ∼89.6% of its maximum value after being stored for 60 days in an atmospheric environment (25 ± 5 °C @ 50 ± 5% RH, in the dark). This work further promotes the application of ionic liquids in the development of efficient p-MPSCs.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted extensive attention due to their higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) and simple fabrication process. However, the open-circuit voltage (VOC) loss remains a significant impediment to enhance device performance. Here, a facile strategy to boost the VOC to 95.5% of the Shockley-Queisser (S-Q) limit through the introduction of a universal multifunctional polymer additive is demonstrated. This additive effectively passivates the cation and anion defects simultaneously, thereby leading to the transformation from the strong n-type to weak n-type of perovskite films. Benefitting from the energy level alignment and the suppression of bulk non-radiative recombination, the quasi-Fermi level splitting (QFLS) is enhanced. Consequently, the champion devices with 1.59 eV-based perovskite reach the highest VOC value of 1.24 V and a PCE of 23.86%. Furthermore, this strategy boosts the VOC by at least 0.07 V across five different perovskite systems, a PCE of 25.04% is achieved for 1.57 eV-based PSCs, and the corresponding module (14 cm2) also obtained a high PCE of 21.95%. This work provides an effective and universal strategy to promote the VOC approach to the detailed balance theoretical limit.
Printable CsPbI3 Perovskite Solar Cells with PCE of 19% via an Additive Strategy

Abstract:All‐inorganic CsPbI3 holds promise for efficient tandem solar cells, but reported fabrication techniques are not transferrable to scalable manufacturing methods. Herein, printable CsPbI3 solar cells are reported, in which the charge transporting layers and photoactive layer are deposited by fast blade‐coating at a low temperature (≤100 °C) in ambient conditions. High‐quality CsPbI3 films are grown via introducing a low concentration of the multifunctional molecular additive Zn(C6F5)2, which reconciles the conflict between air‐flow‐assisted fast drying and low‐quality film including energy misalignment and trap formation. Material analysis reveals a preferential accumulation of the additive close to the perovskite/SnO2 interface and strong chemisorption on the perovskite surface, which leads to the formation of energy gradients and suppressed trap formation within the perovskite film, as well as a 150 meV improvement of the energetic alignment at the perovskite/SnO2 interface. The combined benefits translate into significant enhancement of the power conversion efficiency to 19% for printable solar cells. The devices without encapsulation degrade only by ≈2% after 700 h in air conditions.

Abstract:One potential advantage of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is the ability to solution process the precursors and deposit films from solution 1,2 . At present, spin coating, blade coating, spray coating, inkjet printing and slot-die printing have been investigated to deposit hybrid perovskite thin films 3,4,5,6 . Here we expand the range of deposition methods to include screen-printing, enabled by a stable and viscosity-adjustable (40–44,000 cP) perovskite ink made from a methylammonium acetate ionic liquid solvent. We demonstrate control over perovskite thin-film thickness (from about 120 nm to about 1,200 nm), area (from 0.5 × 0.5 cm 2 to 5 × 5 cm 2 ) and patterning on different substrates. Printing rates in excess of 20 cm s −1 and close to 100% ink use were achieved. Using this deposition method in ambient air and regardless of humidity, we obtained the best efficiencies of 20.52% (0.05 cm 2 ) and 18.12% (1 cm 2 ) compared with 20.13% and 12.52%, respectively, for the spin-coated thin films in normal devices with thermally evaporated metal electrodes. Most notably, fully screen-printing devices with a single machine in ambient air have been successfully explored. The corresponding photovoltaic cells exhibit high efficiencies of 14.98%, 13.53% and 11.80% on 0.05-cm 2 , 1.00-cm 2 and 16.37-cm 2 (small-module) areas, respectively, along with 96.75% of the initial efficiency retained over 300 h of operation at maximum power point.

Abstract:Simultaneously improving device efficiency and stability is the most important issue in perovskite solar cell (PSC) research. Here, we strategically introduce a multi-functional interface layer (MFIL) with integrated roles of: (1) electron transport, (2) moisture barrier, (3) near-infrared photocurrent enhancement, (4) trap passivation, and (5) ion migration suppression to enhance the device performance. The narrow-band-gap non-fullerene acceptor, Y6, was screened out to replace the most commonly used PCBM in the inverted PSCs. A significantly improved power conversion efficiency of 21.0% was achieved, along with a remarkable stability (up to 1,700 h) without encapsulation under various external stimuli (light, heat, and moisture). Furthermore, systematic studies of the molecular orientation or passivation and the charge carrier dynamics at the interface between perovskite and MFIL were presented. These results offer deep insights for designing advanced interlayers and establish the correlations between molecular orientation, interface molecular bonding, trap state density, non-radiation recombination, and the device performance.

Abstract:In‐plane directional crystallization of perovskite is realized by inducing a horizonal solvent vapor pressure gradient atop the wet film with the built tiny chamber. Perovskite of high crystallinity with obvious growth orientation is thus well filled in the non‐ordered mesoporous scaffold, and boosts the PCE of the printable hole‐conductor‐free carbon‐based perovskite solar cell and module to 19.35% and 16.53%. Popular solution‐processed approaches for producing the active layer of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) generally have to make compromise between crystallinity and compactness by inducing a rapid crystallization process with explosive nucleation and limited growth via removing solvent quickly. Here, a practical growth‐dominated in‐plane directional crystallization technique (IPDC) with a deeply retarded crystallization process for the scalable preparation of PSCs are reported. During the low‐temperature annealing, a tiny chamber with a small height is built atop the wet perovskite precursor film to restrain the vertical diffusion and removal of solvent vapor. The chamber eliminates the vertical solvent vapor gradient and induce a horizonal in‐plane gradient of solvent vapor pressure (SVP) toward the preset exhaust port which allows the slow escape of solvent vapor to outer space. In this way, nucleation is induced preferentially near the port and the as‐formed heterogeneous nuclei then grow continuously and directionally. With IPDC, sufficient filling of perovskite with high crystallinity and obvious growth orientation is realized in non‐ordered mesoporous scaffolds. An encouraging power conversion efficiency of 19.35% and 16.53% is achieved respectively for the 0.1 and 52.3‐cm2 printable mesoscopic hole‐conductor‐free PSCs with carbon electrodes.
