Abstract:The impact of Zn on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of Al-Mg-Si alloys with high Cu contents was studied through microstructure analysis and accelerated corrosion testing. The age-hardening response of the alloy improved with the addition of trace Zn, and the poor corrosion resistance caused by high Cu content was overcome. Intergranular corrosion susceptibility (IGC) decreased and then increased with increasing Zn content. Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloys that contain 0.5 wt.% Zn possessed the best corrosion resistance. Zn decreased the potential difference between the matrix and the Al(Mn, Fe)Si phases according to scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) tests, which reduced the driving force of corrosion in the alloy. Additionally, the addition of Zn promoted discontinuous precipitation at the grain boundaries, which was conducive to enhancing the IGC resistance. However, excessive Zn (1.0 wt.%) promoted the diffusion of more solute atoms near the grain boundaries to the grain boundaries, which coarsened the precipitated phase at the grain boundaries and shortened the interphase distance. Moreover, as the width of the PFZ increased, the concentration of solute atoms decreased, and the potential difference between the precipitated phase and the PFZ increased, leading to more severe IGC behavior. Therefore, an appropriate Zn content was beneficial for improving the corrosion properties and age-hardening response of Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloys.
