Abstract:In this paper, we prove some properties and characterizations of stratifiable spaces and the following theorem:Theorem. The following are equivalent:1 (Y, tau) is a stratifiable space.2 There is a zero-dimension submetric stratifiable space (X, mu) with M-3- structures and an irreducible perfect map f : (X, mu) -> (Y, tau).A stratifiable space (X, mu) is said to have an M-3-structure if (X, mu) satisfies the following conditions A and B:A. Abstract:A stratified space is a topological space equipped with a \emph{stratification}, which is a decomposition or partition of the topological space satisfying certain extra conditions. More recently, the notion of poset-stratified space, i.e., topological space endowed with a continuous map to a poset with its Alexandrov topology, has been popularized. Both notions of stratified spaces are ubiquitous in mathematics, ranging from investigations of singular structures in algebraic geometry to extensions of the homotopy hypothesis in higher category theory. In this article we study the precise mathematical relation between these different approaches to stratified spaces.

Abstract:We prove that the extremal stratification of an Alexandrov space by Perelman-Petrunin is a CS stratification in the sense of Siebenmann. We also show that every space of directions of an Alexandrov space without proper extremal subsets is homeomorphic to a sphere. In the appendix we give an example of a primitive extremal subset of codimension 2 that is not an Alexandrov space with respect to the induced intrinsic metric.

Abstract:We introduce a natural stratification of the space of projective classes of measured laminations on a complete hyperbolic surface of finite area. We prove a rigidity result, namely, the group of self-homeomorphisms of the space of projective measured laminations that preserve such a stratification is in general identified with the extended mapping class group of the corresponding surface. We use this approach to fill a gap in the proof of the rigidity of the action of the extended mapping class group on the unmeasured laminations space.

Abstract:We construct a locally hyperbolic 3-manifold $M_\infty$ such that $\pi_ 1(M_\infty)$ has no divisible subgroup. We then show that $M_\infty$ is not homeomorphic to any complete hyperbolic manifold. This answers a question of Agol [DHM06,Mar07].

Abstract:We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for when an algebraic stack admits a good moduli space and prove a semistable reduction theorem for points of algebraic stacks equipped with a $\Theta$-stratification. These results provide a generalization of the Keel--Mori theorem to moduli problems whose objects have positive dimensional automorphism groups and give criteria on the moduli problem to have a separated or proper good moduli space. To illustrate our method, we apply these results to construct proper moduli spaces parameterizing semistable $\mathcal{G}$-bundles on curves and moduli spaces for objects in abelian categories.

Abstract:An arrangement of hyperplanes is a finite collection of C-linear subspaces of codimension one in a complex vector space C-l. For such an arrangement A, there is a natural projective arrangement A* of hyperplanes in CPl-1 associated to it. Let M(A) = C-l-boolean OR(H is an element of A) H and M(A*) = CPl-1 - boolean OR H-H is an element of A**.One of central topics in the theory of arrangements is to find connections between the topology or differentiable structure of M(A) (or M(A*)) and the combinatorial geometry of A. A partial solution to this problem was given by Jiang and Yau [6]. Specially, they showed that for a class of nice arrangement in CP2, the diffeomorphic types of the complements are combinatorial in nature. In this paper, we introduce a Dew class of simple arrangements in CP2. This class of simple arrangements is much larger than the class of nice arrangements. We prove that for this new class of simple arrangements, the diffeomorphic types of the complements are still combinatorial in nature. In fact, the moduli space of simple arrangements with fixed combinatorial data is connected.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a duality for constructible sheaves on conically smooth stratified spaces. Here we consider sheaves with values in a stable and bicomplete $\infty$-category equipped with a closed symmetric monoidal structure, and in this setting constructible means locally constant along strata and with dualizable stalks. The crucial point where we need to employ the geometry of conically smooth structures is in showing that Lurie's version of Verdier duality restricts to an equivalence between constructible sheaves and cosheaves: this requires a computation of the exit path $\infty$-category of a compact stratified space, that we obtain via resolution of singularities.

Topological Bordism of Singular Spaces and an Application to Stratified L-Classes

Abstract:A generalized-homology bordism-theory is constructed, such that for certain manifold homotopy stratified sets (MHSS; Quinn-spaces) homeomorphism-invariant geometric fundamental-classes exist. The construction combines three ideas: Firstly, instead of restricting geometric cycles by conditions on links only, a more flexible framework is built directly via geometric properties, secondly, controlled topology methods are used to give an accessible link-based criterion to detect suitable cycles and thirdly, a geometric argument is used to show, that these classes of cycles are suitable to study the transition to intrinsic stratifications. As an application, we give a construction of topologically (homeomorphism) invariant (homological) L-classes on MHSS Witt-spaces satisfying conditions on Whitehead-groups of links and the dimensional spacing of meeting strata. These L-classes agree, whenever those spaces are additionally pl-pseudomanifolds, with the Goresky-MacPherson L-classes.

Abstract:Recently Ott, Tomforde and Willis proposed a new approach for one sided shift spaces over infinite alphabets. In this new approach the conjugacy classes of shifts of finite type, edge shifts, and M-step shifts are distinct and the authors conjecture that for each non-negative integer M there exist an (M+1)-step shift space that is not conjugate to any M-step shift. In this short paper we build a class of (M+1)-step shifts that are not conjugate to any M-step shift and hence show that their conjecture is correct.

Abstract:It is a major problem in analysis on metric spaces to understand when a metric space is quasisymmetric to a space with strong analytic structure, a so-called Loewner space. A conjecture of Kleiner, recently disproven by Anttila and the second author, proposes a combinatorial sufficient condition. The counterexamples constructed are all topologically one dimensional, and the sufficiency of Kleiner's condition remains open for most other examples. A separate question of Kleiner and Schioppa, apparently unrelated to the problem above, asks about the existence of "analytically $1$-dimensional planes": metric measure spaces quasisymmetric to the Euclidean plane but supporting a $1$-dimensional analytic structure in the sense of Cheeger. In this paper, we construct an example for which the conclusion of Kleiner's conjecture is not known to hold. We show that either this conclusion fails in our example or there exists an "analytically $1$-dimensional plane". Thus, our construction either yields a new counterexample to Kleiner's conjecture, different in kind from those of Anttila and the second author, or a resolution to the problem of Kleiner--Schioppa.

Abstract:We define a new combinatorial class of triangulations of closed 3-manifolds, satisfying a weak version of 0-efficiency combined with a weak version of minimality, and study them using twisted squares. As an application, we obtain strong restrictions on the topology of a 3-manifold from the existence of non-smooth maxima of the volume function on the space of circle-valued angle structures.
